    Just adding my personal experience to anyone about Ridgelines and snow- never once had a problem with it. This winter was very tough ( I live in Northeast PA) and driving through ice and snow storms was normal to me. I have driven in them with and without snow tires, and without them its still good. One time I slid a little but I was doing 45 so I understand. I have used my snow tires this whole winter and never slid once. I love my Ridgeline, and its a great vehicle for snowy weather.

    I've had a Ridgeline RTX since brand new. It's an 07 and will be 8 years old soon. I have 138,000 miles on it and it's been superbly reliable. While a number of my friends have gone thru recalls with their Tacomas, or get horrible fuel economy with their Frontiers or burn out their transmissions at 70K with the F-150's, my Ridgeline continues to run.
    I regularly tow our camper, my boy scout trailer and load up the truck bed and haul 4 scouts, it keeps on running. It's super comfy for 4 large adults as my friends always want me to drive.
    By rock solid reliability, all I've done is oil changes, 3rd set of brakes, 3rd set of tires and 3rd battery. Changed the timing belt and water pump. Not a single thing other than that.
    Sure, it's not a "off roader" but on road it's awesome and the first vehicle I've ever wanted to keep beyond 5 years. At 8 years old, I still enjoy every drive with it. It's worth every penny and is paid for. I am looking forward to what Honda Replaces it with in 2016. And will give it to my college son for his use then.

    I just got a 2012 Sport this month. We've been getting hammered with snow, and driving the Ridgeline is like being in God Mode. This thing will NOT get stuck!
    Yes, I know that 50 weeks out of the year this will be too much, and I could accomplish the same with a set of snow tires and 200# of sand in the bed. But I don't have a garage, and I don't feel like ever having to wait for a tow truck in the winter.
    Honda really hit this one out of the park so far.

  • @TheFirstObserver
    @TheFirstObserver 10 лет назад +5

    Personal experience with the 2006 model: All around a great medium truck. It works well as an effective urban workhorse (not quite as strong as the age-old heavies like ford and Chevy, or as durable as the Tacoma or Hilux), but as an intermediary between cargo-transporting and day-to-day life, it suites its purpose well. Now it can slide. I tested it the first winter I had it, and in an unshoveled/unsalted parking lot with a good coating of snow and ice, it managed pretty well. Sharp turns at high speed (never recommended) could cause it to slide perpendicular, but sane driving solves that. Maneuvering in the snow was less of a problem, and lane switches and slaloming were handled nicely by the vsa. Important thing to note about the vsa is that, if you are climbing large slopes, mudding, or just getting your car stuck, you want often want to disable it. The vsa brakes slipping wheels, and in those situations, you occasionally need the wheels delivering all their power to the ground. The VTM-lock (Rear diff) is also good. One complaint is that its body is not very strong. Don't get me wrong. Great frame, durable, but its body doesn't always hold that well under light impact. It gives it those amazing crash test ratings, but popping a side-panel back on after taking down a fence is not the most comforting experience. And its stock skid plate is, well, a plastic stock skid plate. If you bottom out, it’s nice to have the protection, but maintenance is a bitch (like all cars with the things) and if you push too hard it can come clean off. Its nose makes sharp angles harder. I personally was matching my friend in his 1985 landcruiser on a mudding course until we came to one little ditch. In all honesty, he had to back up re-position too, but when I bottomed out, I pushed my way up. The skid plate hated me that day. Hmm. Last thoughts...very comfortable inside. Backseat room isn't the most spacious. Oh! The embedded snorkel is a godsend. During the flooding in Boulder, CO this year, the snorkel (and truck height) were just enough to get out of many sticky situations. It’s just under the engine's fuse-boxes, but about as high as you want to take most non-dedicated-off-road vehicles. A wrong turn left me in a flooded parking lot without an exit, where the water was up to another car’s windshield. Plowed right through it and up the steep hill beside the lot to get to a nearby road. Absolutely Beautiful. Anyway. TL:DR It is a great generalist’s truck. If you need your vehicle for specific tasks like work or transportation, you might find better specialists. However, if you need something capable of filling a wide variety of tasks, it is fantastic.

    Good AWD system, and good tires on this (Michelin LTX). I get the its not a real truck thing all the time...its unique, there is no doubt about it, but it does what others can't with the AWD. Before I bought I looked at Tacoma's and Frontiers and Colorado's. I'm happy I went with the ridgeline. Much more cab room, more family friendly and I still get work done with it.

    I have had two crvs that drive through whatever an f 150 can hats impressive alone so I just bought a 2014 ridgeline touring totally confident that it will perform above my expectations. My dad made fun of me one time when I said I want one he said its just a real big car but yet he has owned three or four chevy trucks that all had some sort of recall on them for numerous things if honda has recalls its usually for small things like lights or starters but any one of my honda cars always made me happy and did things you would not expect them to do, my civic climbed huge hills 1.8 litre motor front wheel drive I rolled it one time right over I got a friend to pull it back onto its wheels I started it right up and drove it home it had one tiny dent a fifty point inspection came up clean the next day I have been sold ever since I pick up my ridgeline next week Can't wait.

    Dave, when you got stuck, I would have loved to see if pushing the VTM-4 Lock button would have gotten you unstuck from that drainage ditch vise rocking the Ridgeline back and forth. By any chance, did you try the VTM-4 Lock function and just edited it out of your final video? If so, how did the vehicle respond with the VTM-4 locked?

    Did you ever engage the VTM-4 Lock, or did you do that all in drive with the traction control? I've got a 2006 RTL, and just after I bought it, I climbed a small bentonite, dirt, and grass slurry mound at work (directional drill tailings) in the rain, and I did need to use the lock, as it was slippery as, well, grass covered wet clay, but the Ridgeline zipped right up it.

  • @miguelonatef.817
    @miguelonatef.817 8 лет назад

    I own a 2013 RTL model. It's an amazing truck, i'm so happy with the performance, driving and fuel. Two things to consider... if you have to drive on hard stony roads it is a little noisy because the 18" ring wheels (low tires). The other issue is when you drive throw dusty roads. take care and close very well your windows, sunroof and turn on the A/A or dust could be a passenger too!. The "in bed trunk" is fantastic and the space in rear seats too.

  • @dfielding635
    @dfielding635 8 лет назад +3

    I read comments from people saying why would they want a front wheel drive truck (Ridgeline is front wheel drive when all wheel drive is not activated). I'll tell you why- Way more storage space and room in the cab and below the box. There is no hump for a drive line tunnel going to the rear axle, thus making the floor inside the cab flat. Why do other pickup trucks not have the trunk in the pickup bed like Honda does, it's because they have solid axles running across where the trunk would be. I own a 2006 Ridgeline and have hauled refrigerators, lumber etc, etc, and that truck handles it like there is no load at all. Fabulous truck with a fabulous engine and superb reliability.

    • @dfielding635
      @dfielding635 8 лет назад

      The great features I listed above are in the way of a solid rear axle and a drive line from the engine running that solid rear axle. I suppose rear wheel drive could be designed with independent rear suspension (like the Ridgeline has), but it wouldn't be a solid rear axle like other pick up trucks.

    • @skirmich
      @skirmich 7 лет назад

      All "Part Time AWD" Cars are FWD when Not Active mainly in the Highway... This does not make them FWD Cars, This car still is AWD every time you come out of a stop sign and it does have a rear Propeller Shaft, Honda just raised the cabin in order to make the floor flat which can be done in any pick up (And they do).. VTM4 also does not need to be "Activated" it will kick in at ANY SPEED when it senses wheel spin in the front tires, The only thing you can trigger is VTM4 Lock which does an entirely different thing.
      Now the new Ridgeline can come in full FWD and that is why the comments and me ask WHY???? Towing Capacity is already low at 5000lbs for this segment in AWD and the FWD caps it at 3000lbs which is ridiculous. Unless you will use it as a very light duty truck for business there is no point in getting a FWD Ridgeline, You get better options with the FWD Pilot (Like 7 Seats) and same towing capacity as the FWD Ridgeline.

    • @skirmich
      @skirmich 7 лет назад

      BigBlackNerd What? There is no inaccuracies on my post.. You are clearly confused on what PART TIME and FULL TIME AWD is... Search it online then come back again.
      Just to teach you a little further.. There are NO CENTER DIFFS in ANY AWD System from Honda or Acura... They use a very clever system to simulate a Center Diff and distribute power to the rear but there are No Mechanical Center Diffs in ANY HONDA OR ACURA.

    Great perspective of off road capability. I’m seriously considering this truck. The F150’s, Rams and Chevys all have their positives but I don’t have the space to park one of those giants plus I’m not hauling a motor home or construction material. Just camera/ camping equipment, groceries and occasional towing of my motorbikes. Ridgeline is perfect for my purposes.

    The standard Michelins LTX are very good truck/suv tires that offer a excellent balance of on road and off road. They also provide a pretty decent ride, as well as having decent longevity. I've seen vehicles with the Michelin LTX get from 60,000-90,000 miles depending on application. They are slightly pricey, but considering that you get a lot of miles out of them, they aren't actually more expensive because you'll get more miles out of them. More than say the Wrangler SR-A (which are awful), BFG Long Trail, or GDY Fortera's.
    I sold plenty of LTX's in my time and a vast majority of my customers loved them. Some options to replace for those who don't need as aggressive and want a better ON road ride characteristics and quietness while sacrificing some off road/snow since they don't go off road, would be the Michelin Latitude.
    Some aggressive tires for more off road, and harsh conditions, while sacrificing some on road characteristics, many seem to like the Pirelli Scorpion ATR.
    If you're not sure, you can't really go wrong with the Michelin LTX. And for the love of god, don't let the vendor sipe them. They'll squirm and ride like crap if you do.

    I read just one of the articles there and the truck at that time went from $27,000 to $37,000 now the price of the same truck is $47,000 so that means it went up by 10,000 since 2006

    For all you that don't know this truck is awd up to 18mph. If the system does not detect slippage anywhere it will go to 2wd. Any slippage in the system and it gets traction to those wheels. You can lock all 4's with the button inside. No other truck is awd too. U get all wheel drive and 4x4 with ridgeline.

    Why didn't you use VTM-4 Lock to back out of that hole? I see the 4WD is capable enough without using the locking rear axle though, Great vid.

    Pretty impressive for all-season tires on this vehicle. Dave, how does the Ridgeline handle compared to a full-size Silverado or F-150? Also, is Honda supposed to overhaul the Ridgeline soon and give it a more fuel-efficient engine?

    This is a great video!! Honda doing what it does best: impress! I "grew up Honda" and had a few other brands along the way. 1987 Honda CRX, 1991 Civic Si, 1993 Accord EX, 1996 Accord EX, 2003 Element EX, 2007 Element EX....... I want my first brand-new Honda! : 2014 Honda Ridgeline. (Also owned Chevy 1500, Z71, K5 & Suburban for offroad and towing) I think the Ridgeline is PERFECT. My 1/2 ton chevy's with 350 V8's could only tow the same 5,000lbs. except with Honda, best resale and a dealership culture you can trust.

    Hi. Did you use vtm-4 going up those hills??

    • @acephantom903
      @acephantom903 5 лет назад +2

      Usually the AWD system is smart enough to figure it out without needing the vtm-4. I've heard it can take even longer to get out with it engaged depending on the situation. The newer generation has it removed.

    What is new? My 2007 does that too. I am asked all the time for a look around and a short ride. Had mine since early April 2007. Since Chevy cut the Avalanche, those owners are looking at the Ridgeline. They are looking at more towing capacity and maybe the ability to lock up AWD at speeds higher than 18mph. When I show them the secret compartment under the bed and the dual swing tailgate the deal is almost sealed sealed, then I show them the flip up rear seats and flat floor. I do tell them the turning radius is NOT so good, It needs a tighter turn.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid 9 лет назад +2

      The AWD can go above 18mph, it is all time 4wd. You are talking about the VTM-4 lock that can't go above 18mph. Which in most trucks is called a locking differential, which shouldn't be used above 18mph antway.

    • @RKHarm24
      @RKHarm24 9 лет назад

      crazyjdkid You are correct, the VTM-4.

    I like how he is "off roading" then is worried about that last part of possibly bottoming out. I want to see what gets it stuck. Cause you have never really off roaded until you need to get pulled out. I not saying trying to get stuck or goofing around I meant seeing how far cautiously you can go. So they should give this guy a beater truck and test each one to their full ability.

    I think it's odd that the Honda Accord V6 has more hp than this Honda Ridgeline. lol
    I really think Honda builds some pretty good autos. They all seem to pass all the safety test these days with excellent crash scores too!

    Owning a 2010 Ridgeline RTL not surprised by the capabilities. I been in far tougher off road scenarios without incident. In the real world, the stated mpg of full sizers like the new Silverado and current F150 will not REALLY beat the rated 15/21 mpg of the Ridgeline. A lot of the full size pickup mileage rating is extra careful mpg cycles by the mfrs (remember, the mfrs test their own vehicles for mpg within government guidelines).

    look lemme just say I've been driving my dad's 02 Tundra since 16 and in august my 04 Tundra. I've driven a lot of silverados, F150s and a handful of Colorados and Tacomas meanwhile working at a shop and fyi I do landscaping too. my parents have a 2011 Pilot and recently before I got my truck had to use the pilot to tow my landscape trailer meanwhile my dad's truck was getting fixed after I got rear ended one day. that pilot is terrible when it comes to towing but I know that's not it's purpose but I technically can "tow" and recently I drove a Ridgeline and that thing does not feel like a truck at all! has characteristics of a sedan. yeah it can tow too and haul but for a real man's job (landscaping in my case) it does not stand a chance too soft. I'll take a legit body on frame solid axle V8 or diesel truck all day everyday before I ever consider one of these.

    • @JUKEBOXX1990
      @JUKEBOXX1990 8 лет назад

      So did you landscaping in the Ridgeline or just didn't like how it drove?

    • @02to06TUNDRAFAN
      @02to06TUNDRAFAN 8 лет назад

      I drove it meanwhile working at that shop. Drove a total of about 3 miles after doing an alignment. But not that I didn't like it. It is just too car like to be taken seriously in any truck segment in my honest opinion

      +JUKEBOXX1990 yeah I understand where you coming from and totally not coming off like a dick. but trust me that by the way it handled much like my parents pilot I guarantee you that it wouldn't feel good with a load on it but maybe better than the pilot since these are awd. if I could get my hands on one and load it down with my trailer I'd make a review on it. but Idk of anyone that owns one.

    Hello Dave, I would just like to point out that several times in your video you refereed the drive system in the Ridgeline as being AWD, this is actually incorrect. Ridgeline has a 4WD drive system with a locking rear differential.

    Interesting review. I have driven around that ORV park and those slopes are no easy climb in the snow and ice, especially with OEM All Season tires. I do think you risked rolling the Ridgeline - if you started to slide back down and got sideways..... OTH the ground was frozen, so you didm't have to deal with the very loose sand.

    Interesting review, Dave. I look forward to the detailed review of the vehicle. Frankly, I don't really get the point of the Ridgeline. Not meant as a snide remark, I just don't understand the point of a four door sedan masquerading as a pickup with a tiny bed. I may be wrong, of course, but if I want a crew cab truck, I'd think I'd buy one. Other than transporting the occasional washer and dryer home from the big box score, I don't get it.

      I feel the urge to weigh in on this due to the incredible amount of flack that the Ridgeline recieves. It is not fair to ever compare the Ridgeline to the likes of the
      F-150 or Silverado. Honda is not trying to fill that gap. The market that the Ridgeline fills perfectly is people that are looking for the cargo carrying capacity of a truck as well as the off road capability, but don't plan on doing much towing, if any very light stuff. I drive a 2006 Ridgeline SE myself and as far as off road performance the Ridgeline is head and shoulders above the rest. I live in Medicine Hat Alberta and the Ridgeline by far outperforms all of my friends trucks. The traction and control, fully independent suspension, as well as power that the Ridgeline has add up to a great off road machine. When the situation calls for it, the VTM-4lock gives "quad-like" traction, absolutely zero wheelspin and it has gotten me through some situations that my friends would not even dare. Driving ability may have something to do with it as i am a semi-professional cross country dirt bike racer, as well as a 2" lift and i am running 32" Firestone Destination MT's however the potential is still there. I feel calling the Ridgeline almost an SUV is a bit of a putdown to the vehicle due to the great potential that it really does have. Overall this is an absolutely beautiful vehicle and i would absolutely recommend it to anyone thinking about one but hesitating due to the rumours and flack directed towards the Ridgeline. If you are worried about ruggedness the Rigdeline unibody system has more rigid strength and integrity than any frame on body setup from a full size pick up. The interior is wonderful in my opinion, the quality of the ride you wont find in any other pickup, neither will you find the sportiness on road in any other pickup. An absolutely wonderful vehicle that fits my needs of hunting, dirt bike racing, as well as off roading perfectly. Highly recommend this truck to anyone.

      One of the greatest assets the Ridgeline has is that it doesn't ride like a truck! Over miles and miles it's extremely comfortable. And that just can not be said for many other trucks. Especially the Tacoma and Frontier which it directly competes.

      You do know that Honda/Acura Typically uses the same unibody for most cars right?
      The CR-V is practically a Honda Civic
      Pilot = Odyssey = Ridgeline = MDX
      Accord = Crosstour = TL/X = TSX = RL/X = ILX = RDX = ZDX < By far the most shared Chassis.
      The Ridgeline is still as of 2015 the best Handling Truck ever made.. The New Ridgeline can only improve the amazing formula.
