I realized after seeing your video that there is a thin line between boredom and meditation. Everytime I tried to meditate, I was caught up getting bored the moment I left my mind idle. If one manages to convert boredom to meditation or mindfulness, thats where the creativity blossoms. Cheers!
Yes... I was doing this earlier today... After some time (not sure how long) my head started falling forward, then I'd lift it back up... Then it slowly falls back down lol... Stay awake during meditation 😳
The Unbelievable Benefits of Being Bored 0504am 5.2.23 and yerv never met a more bunch of stressed and irate idiots than those who "meditate" or insist you need to be as happy as they are - which is the new negativity for the meditative and highly strung amongst you. we were never happier until you pointed out we need to aspire to your amiable and joyous purview.
Guys, I cannot thank you enough! There I was, tired from work, my son just went for his daily nap and I got time for myself on which point I usually end up chilling and watching youtube. This video was in my home feed, clicked it and it blew my mind. I remembered when I was most creative in life and what were my rituals at the time. The best ideas I had in music, the career choice I made and ended up loving all stemmed from my boredom. At the time, I was 16-17 and my computer did not have internet access (so no distractions). I used to spend hours playing minesweeper and listening for the same album. During those times, I started my projects and never got to be bored again, just tired and recently I was in a place where I drained up most of my creative energy. I will be bored again!
Neat topic! I've been thinking about this recently, and have actually considered some 'boredom time' to try and put my mind in a more creative state. Then I realised that surely this can't be too far away from meditation? Would be great to see a video covering meditation, possibly with a focus on how it affects creativity and brain activity?
Good watch. Thanks. I find that my mind wanders the most when I take hikes into the forest to go target shooting. I always bring a sketchbook or notepad to write down blurbs or ideas for my books.
Finally, I found a thing schools are actually good for! Making people bored! Edit: I forgot schools in most countries, unlike mine, allow phones... But it can be difficult to use phones during class while the teacher's there, however it's not as difficult to not pay attention to the teacher and let your mind wander off, is what I believe most students do other than talking during classes
When bored you find something to do to not be bored. Doesn't help when when this initiates indecision. 'So many things I could no but none are sparking enough interest/motivation to actually go do them'. Then I'm stuck bored and not bothered to do anything.
I don't think it's really boredom, but rather giving the brain time to wander Our brain just happen to wander when we're bored, but I think there are better activities to both stimulate the brain and let it "breath". For example, many people aren't bored while taking a shower but that is when they get their best ideas. No matter how you slice it, boredom sucks and there are always better alternatives.
It seems to me that the issue is more about instant gratification than it is about escaping boredom, which in itself is a good thing. Estape boredom through hard tasks and you'll be rewarded. If you let your mind wander whithout any restraint or direction you're more likely to get depressed
This maybe doesn't directly answer the question but... I have tried to reduce my screen time by deleting most of the games on my smart phone. (3 I have not yet deleted, but I do try to play them minimally.) While I do still often keep myself from 'complete boredom' by listening to podcasts, I now try to not play games while listening, and instead simply focus on what the people on the podcast are saying. Though, at first, just doing this was hard because my hands 'felt bored' by not doing something physically while listening. It's a small step. But, it's a step :)
On a nice day, I like to just sit in the grass and meditate for a bit. Not sure if that's counted as boredom but I sure as hell am thinking a lot when doing that.
Do a weekly "power off" period for a few hours at a time, when only the essentials are on - refrigerator, AC, lights - you can figure out which household circuits are non-essential and flip those breakers off and don't neglect to power off your mobile devices or go "airplane mode" and put them in a drawer. Get away regularly to a place without your mobile devices or with no cellular signal for at least part of a day if not a weekend or a few days - either by yourself or with someone you are close with. If you have to occasionally occupy yourself during these times, take a boring book that will let your mind wander as you read. That often works for me...
Wow I can related... at school I always had a million ideas to build stuff and create stuff, that I came up with during class instead of listening to the "boring" lecture.... Now that I'm no longer bored anymore... ideas are gone and I'm dying to even just have 10% of it back.
Grab a blanket, lay it on the grass outside and yourself onto it and watch the sky. Not only relaxing, but also very boring and great opportunity to let your mind wander around.
Setting aside time to be bored can be as simple as turning off the radio or other media devices during mundane tasks like driving, mowing the lawn, or folding laundry. For many people, meditation can be an excuse to escape stimulation and access that default mode network you mentioned in the video. I believe this is also an objective value to going to church, or similar services. Although it may be sacrilegious to view church as a source of boredom, there is objective value in setting aside time away from stimuli to let the mind reflect on philosophy.
It would be interesting to hear about what happens when you spend a lot of the day bored for extensive lengths of time like a summer break. Is it it still positive?
Cyanide For long periods of time? I doubt it. Being bored too often is linked to depression. It's why people with ADHD who get bored far more easily than those without have a higher chance of depression. This is for primarily inattentive ADHD like I have. This is because it effects the transportation of norepinephrine in your brain which results in too little of it being transported. Norepinephrine is what helps you focus and stay aroused and alert and low amounts of it is also related to depression.
Even when i am not in front of a computer i'm still not bored, I also don't feel bored when i daydream and i find enjoyment in most things, so this might be why
Brilliant video, I started smiling as the video started because I knew what you were getting at... BORED YET!! lol. I don't have any social media, no TV, so now gaming, no drinking no smoking... "so what do you do with yourSelf... Well I get it know it! 👁️ 😉
Great video-- but there's a great deal of contention surrounding the claim of increased isolationism. The claim usually roots itself in Robert Putnam's book "Bowling Alone" which talks about how things like TV has decreased social capital and participatory civic activity. But that contention has come under fire by sociologists arguing that a number of social activities have moved to a digital space and/or has provided new opportunities to discuss things. And while there is a threat of an echo chamber, the popular conception is a bit overblown. Surveys of web users show that very limited numbers are actually in information bubbles, totally insulated from contradictory ideas. Most people actually experience a great deal of ideological heterogeneity in their networks. That all being said, I think there's a great argument for spending some time in boredom so that we can assimilate all of these experiences and come up with creative stuff!
My tips for experiencing more boredom: Sheer power of will in avoiding stimuli and lots of text books that you're allowed to "indulge" in. At least your winning in some sense if you do.
There are a thousand of videos saying this but these videos do not say how to enter the state of boredom so that we build up a habit of getting into the state of boredom regularly for our mind to get the time it needs in order to reset itself and sower our brain with loads of creative ideas. Can you make a video regarding the method of getting into the state of boredom through a repetitive task? Which repetitive task is the most effective one?
it's not exactly helpful to do nothing when you have depression/anxiety + self-esteem issues and your mind fills up with negative thoughts and loneliness. Maybe something stimulating enough (like the phone book exercise) can help bring out the creative side.
I would say practice healthy habits, start small first then move your way up. If your having mental issues its best to work on them, the more you avoid it the more it grows. Hope this helps
In boredom we regurgitate the information taken in so as to get the best information possible like a ruminant with 4 stomachs does when it chews on 'curd' to get the best possible quality of food.
3:35 Worth remembering that correlation does not entail causation here and that an unexpected causal chain may exist. More intelligent people have more working memory. Being more intelligent may be what leads to more DMN activity, not necessarily as an effect. Being disposed to DMN activity might be part of intelligence. More DMN activity may be a byproduct of intelligence too since the upbringing more intelligent people have is different.

Thinking back to when I had a mundane and repeitive factory job, I can say that I came up with some much better ideas letting my mind wander than I do now. I came up with builds for things in terraria and the overall look and design of a large space station in kerbal space program doing that job. I think this might also be why meditation has been becoming more popular

I think the human is constantly bored. Tecnology gave us the opportunity to insolate our selves and at the same time to learn about the world, studying everything, as we think we do nothing.
Also "we're only exposed with ideas we are familiar with, what is popular online, we meet less people" How? Past used to be like this, information was so little our boredom used to desesperate us, cause it's very hard to find a human who wants to spend time listening to it self. We didn't know what happened outside our cities, the only information we had was dictated by news and authority figures. To me people in the internet talk what we don't talk at the table. Being able to be bored as we never were before, learning to look at the universe as it is. I really like the message of this video, but I have to note that you don't have to be bored to let your mind wonder.
