Great video! I've never truly understood suspension and this is very helpful.

To what extent can fat bike tyres or plus size tyres replace the function of a suspension fork?

+Srini Pithani Thanks for watching. One could argue that "pneumatic suspension" was the precursor to true suspension on modern mountain bikes. In addition to providing a larger contact patch and allowing the rider to tackle terrain like sand and snow, fat bike and plus bike tires do confer some degree of "suspension" and improved comfort. That said, they do not replace the function of a suspension fork. The amount of "travel" a tire provides is a fraction of that of even a short-travel cross country fork, and thus does not allow the tire to stay in contact with the trail when things get more aggressive. In addition, tires do not provide the same sort of damping (unless you count hysteresis, which I don't) as a fork or shock, which is critical to predictable, tunable performance.
