What do you think? Are bib shorts worth it? Let us know in the comments!
No
Yes, off course.
Sound great, but prices are a ripoff, like most things in the cycling world !
Having just bought my first pair last week and done 2 rides in them, I'm a convert
And I look amazing in them 😂😂😂
Hmm... Never tried them. (Mostly due to cost) but i they are on my new kit list.
I started cycling in high school, I was broke then so I started riding with regular work out shorts. When I bought my first pair of cycling shorts I felt like I went to butt heaven
As with all hobby investments, just buy a cheaper version first and when you actually use it a lot or it has worn out then buy a good version, knowing what you want/need
but defo not too cheap as that's worse than nothing.
I'll happily ride 80k in my mtb shorts than a crap chamois that keeps sliding down my waist...
I have to at least sort of disagree. Going cheap can often result in so much discomfort that the wearer doesn't want to get on the bike ever again. Not good. It's like this with any hobby. Don't be so spendy that you can't pay your life bills, but don't go so cheap that the results are awful. There is usually a happy middle ground.
This advice is very helpful, I also think like this
Going with something that's not right for your body and saddle can lead you to hate biking when you otherwise wouldn't.
@Ranger Smith going cheap doesn't mean uncomfortable. I have some cheap chamois I love. And I hate that I don't like the chamois in any of my +$350 skinsuits.
I usually ride naked to avoid the embarrassment of wearing Lycra
Lol. Silly! You will be seen, protected on the road, that's for sure!
I actually passed someone who did exactly that just yesterday, with a branch sticking out of his helmet. I'm still waiting for him to show up in the local news.
This solves the underwear yes or no debate
If women drive naked on the street - they would be life threatening
Can I ride with you??
Bib shorts changed my life. Didn’t know about them when I first started. Was going to change the seat and a friend told me get bibs instead. Worth every single penny.
Bib shorts under my baggy shorts transformed my mtb experience never sore now.
Use bib shorts and nothing else and you'll transfom your MTB experience once again! ;)
Using bib shorts without baggies on top while riding MTB can be an quite expansive habit.
Same thing here I started doing that thinking it wasnt going to matter at all and its actually super comfortable.
MTBers wear the baggy shorts for more than just a fashion statement. Taking a fall on trail in lycra could destroy a very expensive pair of bib shorts, the baggy MTB shorts over them protects the bib shorts and by extension your skin.
I am a mountain biker and bibs under my baggy shorts is the best. However, the bibs are still too expensive, so sometimes I just do the shorts!

Yes definitely! I prefer bib shorts rather than non bib shorts, especially for a long ride 🚴🏻
A lot of good affordable mtb shorts now come included with really well padded cycling bibs that clips on to the short or can just be worn on their own.
Am new to the channel and was just watching GCN's story about Selle Italia Flite story ( bought a new bike, thinking of getting a better saddle ) noticed it's also Manon in the vid.
So so pretty and tops for the informative news/advice.

They’re really running with that joke I see. 😂
In the 80's I rode in those wool shorts with leather chamois, on a Brooks leather saddle, on a 50's era fixed-wheel with no brakes. I do prefer modern materials in clothing. Wish I still had that bike though...
I finally settled on Top Shelf bibs from Aero Tech Designs and never looked back. Great fit, comfortable chamois (with modesty shield for us shy guys, variety of designs, at an affordable price. Made in the USA also!
A full-length bib for yours truly !!! - I cycle in the early morning and winter ... when it can be cold ... Bibs are something you learn about as you get more experienced, and don't look back.
Bib shorts may have been the best investments I've ever made for cycling
Yeah, same
What is your advice for short range like 10/20 miles ?? Do we need them or they’re necessary for longer riders??
I once had a bike with leather sadle and remember it wss the most comforable sadle I ever had!

Great video Manon, so good to see you building confidence with each video. I am now waiting on my first pair of Bib Shorts.
Bib shorts all the way! Been wearing them for over 30 years. Definitely recommend the over the shoulder style, though they can be inconvenient for comfort breaks, they are way more comfortable on longer rides. Also, if your jersey rides up a little, you won't get a ridiculous tan line at your waist.
No, but you do still get the famous/infamous cyclist tan lines in other places. As a person who needs to get sunlight on my skin for Vitamin D production, I sometimes wear non-bibs and no jersey. Everybody knows you can't wear bibs with no jersey.

Been riding the same pair of JL rowing trou since 2005. Got some bib tights last winter and realized how much easier life can be.
I bought a load from Aldi and they are absolutely great. Very comfortable and because they were on sale they were under a tenner a pair!
My first long ride in bib shorts was a revelation. I will never go back.
I actually bought Castelli shorts earlier this week in preparation for a multi day ride with 9h in the saddle each day. My ass is thankful for this choice. I used to wear 'top range' of decathlon shorts so far but the chamois is incomparable betwwen them. Easily the best cycling purchase I've made

What a great video. I absolutely love the information provided and it felt that you were genuinely trying to help people. Plus your voice and dialogue delivery is very pleasant.
I started “cycling” 15 years ago. Took a break and only recently got back into it. I can tell you I did not do cycling shorts years ago. This time around I got several pair. I can tell you my opinion is they are worth it. Even cheap ones. Get a cheap pair if your wondering and feel the difference they make. My cheap ones are mostly worn out and I can say that I will invest in the higher quality shorts from now on. They made the biggest differences in enjoying the ride. Hope this helped! Keep riding!!!
I’ve only worn cycling shorts but occasionally cars behind me get a good buttcrack flash so I’m thinking I should save some folks from that tragedy and invest in some bibs
Yes, yes you should.

This video is extremely timely. I just bought my first road bike a couple of days ago (I've been riding random bikes casually for about 2 decades though) and all this time, I've only been riding with casual shorts and jeans. I didn't even know there was a solution to chaffing and sore bums - always blamed it on the saddle and brute-forced through them. I had heard of cycling shorts but they looked too embarrassing and uncomfortable for me to try them. Just an hour ago, I decided to try and bought a pair of Specialized RBX shorts. I rode 20mi in khakhi shorts to the LBS to buy them and as I type this very comment, I'm wincing in pain with chaffed bits. Fingers crossed for future rides and thanks for the video!
If you do more than an hour I’d recommend a cream to rub on before to help as well.
For me personally less padding is more comfort. I recently purchased Ekoi bibshorts (they make padding for given rider's weight) and being it only 4 mm it is super comfortable up to 5 hours (maybe more but that was my longest ride in them so far).
Never mind the bib-shorts (although very instructive), I like the countryside where these are filmed. It's the Cotswold's I guess. More cycling around these parts please.
It's such a shame not to see the "Is now time for Cycling Shorts" clip at the beginning of the video.
I agree with most of what Manon said except the cost .... if you do a little research you will find pretty good bib shorts for way smaller money .... my last pair were 20 pounds and I've had many expensive ones and I can't tell difference.
I've had fairly major abdominal surgey, have an ileostomy and have also had related hernias. Bib shorts are an essential for comfort!
Dear Manon,
Here it is a couple of months after you posted this video and I am here to thank you.
I am 69 years young in Oregon USA and thought that all these padded things were for road bikes. Well, I found out that more people than I knew road them mountain biking. And I was so glad to have them on our sea level to 3,200 ft/975 meters (McCullock Peak) 6 hour trip up and down our local Coast Mountain Range. I bought a set of Castrelli, as well as a couple of Zoic underwear that I need to wear shorts or bibs over.
Thank you Manon for your very helpful recommendation!
P.S. My Sweet Wife/Best Friend and I refer to them as "diapers". LOL :)
P. P.S. By the way Manon, where are you? Haven't seen you lately on this channel.

Loved this video being a newbie to road cycling. Would have loved if Manon explained the difference in padding for men's and women's shorts.
I'm in the doesn't wear bib shorts camp at the moment. Not because I don't want to, but because all the cycling clothing manufactures seem to have a very specific body type in mind and I've still got a ways to go before I'm even close to those sizes.
I bought my first bib pants from a bike shop last weekend. I started biking again after 25 years off the saddle.
I have shorts from 1995 with actual shami in it. I prefer them over the newer ones I bought on line.
I liked the bib pants so far. Will probably try bib shorts next spring when it warms up.
Hi to Manon from Vancouver Canada.
And yes love the accent.
Chamois thickness varies so much that every time I switch shorts it feels like a different saddle position.
Regardless of the topic, if I see Manon, I click and watch. She's the best.
Yeah me too.
Came here to say this as well, Manon is just a delight. Wish the ladies tour was as well covered as the mens.
Castelli all the way! I've replaced all of my shorts and bibs with new Castelli competizone bib shorts, and got two of their new summer entrata tops, a base layer, and I got their gilet last year. All brilliant.
Clearly a wealthy man!...
@@piersgooderham8674 they're not that expensive, not as much as their top range, and tbh, you can't put a price on comfort
I’ve bought a morelifecycling bib, this brand surprise me, it’s insane! Great bib and jerseys too. A really huge surprise.
I really nailed my saddle position without bib shorts that left little to none pain or discomfort during my own "at least 10 km every day in may" challenge (including some quite long rides and one Gran Fondo). In June I got myself a pair, and with bib shorts I started to feel discomfort after 30 minutes. I know that I probably need a new setup and all but still, for my riding it held up fine without them. It almost feels like a little bit of wasted money to be fair. (BUT I will continue to experiment with them, at least for a while).
I think that shorts with straps are also warmer and lead to more seating - I much prefer the strapless version and never was afraid that I may lose them due to the missing straps.
Comfort breaks. Brilliant new term I'm going to adopt from now on when I go for a piss.
I really need them. I have an old short with leather inside, but now, I have 4 pairs with gel. I paid US$22 each for two of them and US$37 each for the other two. I love them. I would not go out without them. I am trying to convince my wife to get one, but she keeps saying she does not need them.
I'll happily ride my bike with or without bib shorts although what I wear is often dependant on the distances I'm going to cover. While if I raced I'd wear bib shorts more often.
1:41 "I don't know many people who've sat on a saddle without bib shorts and thought. 'Oh yeah, that's comfy'"
It depends how you define comfort. A saddle is never going to be as comfortable as a sofa, for example. Although it should feel supportive, while you shouldn't underestimate the importance of the other contact points (hands, feet) when it comes to 'comfort' as they all effect each other. In summary, if you have a terrible fit expensive bib shorts might help to a degree although it's possible what's covering your undercarriage wasn't the underlining issue.
Geth Plays Uke so true. And investing in a good saddle that fits your build. If you’re riding
I started with a pair of shorts - they didn't tell me - and Manon didn't mention - the fact that they roll down over a fat belly and end up very uncomfortably underneath it. If you are a bit overweight definitely go for bib-shorts.
They are kind of a Spanx for men : )
I came to road from mountain biking, so Lycra and Bib shorts were weird (still are a bit). But once I grew a small belly, they made made much more sense - avoiding the unseemly midriff seams.
Just discovered these videos...I am am amateur cyclist and have been wearing shorts with padding for a long time, but I wear other loose shorts overtop, and sorry but I have a comfy saddle! ha ha. Oh, and Manon is so cute and I love her accent!
Bib shorts changed my life haha....when I got back into cycling a couple of years ago I got a pair of non-bib shorts because that’s all there was back in the day and I would have some issues breathing because of the waist elastic - no more!
1:08 you've got to give some quality leather saddles a try, manon! at least long enough to break them in 😂
Do you break leather saddles in tho? or do they break you in. I imagine in addition to a bib, needing to add a strong cup if I was going to ride a leather saddle

I wear a leather or wool chamois but I’ve discovered a significant savings just wearing my shorts and suspenders. No butt crack and I can afford more shorts to keep laundry day further away. Plus it makes using the loo so so much easier. If you only ride once or twice a week the bibs may be for you.
You had me at "chammy" 😉😂😂😆

Never really liked bib shorts. I was always a cycling shorts type of guy.
Yeah and wear trunks/boxers inside instead of briefs to reduce chafing
@@ashisha8649 To reduce chafing people don't wear *anything* under cycling shorts!
I just bought my first pair after 3 months of serious cycling....I think they make things a lot easier. I did spend money on what I consider to be a decent pair.
One thing I've experienced is chafing just outside the saddle where the lycra is stretching against the skin. Especially on the Assos BIB's where they have made the fabric narrower in the center part (business area) and also towards the rear causing chafing against the saddle. Therefore one thing to look at when choosing a new BIB for me, is how much the shammy extends over the padded part. I just compare the shammy with the most expensive ASSOS BIB you can get (and can't use due to chafing).
Could you explain is some more!? What’s a shammy? I’ve only been cycling for a week and I need help.

Woollen shorts onto a leather saddle...
Sounds GREAT because good quality leather saddles (eg. Brooks) are still the most comfortable thing you can sit on while riding a bike. Foam glued on top of plastic is inherently flawed. Sure, it might be lighter, (sometimes) cheaper, and weather proof, it's never going to offer the long term comfort some cyclists need.
I've crossed continents on a leather saddle like the one 1 minute in (Brooks B17) with no lycra/padding at all, and my backside is the only part of me that hasn't hurt. It all went wrong when manufacturers made rigid plastic shelled saddles with padding, extra padding giving you chafing. A hammock like leather seat moulds to your arse.
You can also wear a pair of good quality clip on braces with non bib shorts - actually if I remember correctly the original lycra shorts didn't come with a bib.
I ride to the store down the street occasionally without bike shorts and gloves. Feels like I'm naked.
After watching this, I bought 50,000 shorts from NASDAQ. Now I live in side the cardboard house I made from the shorts' packages.
I don't know about you but having a gel in your shorts and saddle is so so comfortable
For those starting off and not wanting to spend a ton, consider decathlon RC 500 bib shorts ... they are good quality, good value and work.
Then you can go from there.
She is right though, they do work well not just in arse padding but in holding that in place and the bib bit wicks sweat up and away from waistband collection you end up with without the bib
in short, I started sceptical but ended up going off it and being happy I did
OR...you could ride a recumbent bike and have a seat so comfortable that you'll choose to sit on it after the ride, too!
"Come over to the Dark Side...it's always cooler in the Shade!" -Darth Low Rider
@Lizard King No, but the aluminum foil helmet liner is optionall!
No, nerd.
Tark McCoy I three bikes right now. All three still have their stock saddles. Only one of them has a seat so hard and uncomfortable that it causes a bit of pain. It's a old road bike, which makes me wonder if manufacturers deliberately make the saddles uncomfortable because they know riders will just buy padded shorts.
@Lizard King You're the clown who's interested in recumbent bikes. Have fun getting zero ass, clown.
At what distance do you think you need them? I've cycled a max of 120km in plain lycra shorts and not felt any discomfort
I guess that you could just save yourself the money and n ot get any if its ok for 120km!
Congratulations you have a golden bum! Riding long over cobbles and the sort would be the ultimate test for your golden buns.
If cobbles or long rides do hurt at some point and you do go for bibs, don't go for the thick padding as you'll probably have more issues with that than a thinner one. A thicker shammy doesn't equal a more comfortable one.
They aren't needed for any distance. I rode across the USA in "regular" cycling shorts.
purchased wife a pair of your gcn bib shorts, she loves them and wears them in preference to her older (worn our) basic shorts.
Manon is the g.o.a.t. especially after the watching her indoor trials, pure strength and precision.

That was I think the most brutal "Lloydy's lost his game" type comment I've seen yet! I had a great belly laugh to that, thanks Manon!
One thing to note about bibs v shorts for men, besides the comfort of no waistband, is bibs keep things where they need to be, there is much more structure and support. Another plus, no worries about a jersey that might ride up and expose your back side. But investing in good bibs is money well spent.

I love my bib shorts, but it wasn't always so. I used to cover my bib shorts with board shorts to escape the ridicule from my colleagues. Eventually I stopped doing that. Now, I'm rocking my bib shorts proudly with my neon orange socks, violet lens Sutros, and rainbow metallic accented Synthe.
I've worn cheap shorts that were very comfortable (higher end PIs) and then expensive shorts that had a rough seam right down the middle of the crotch or a jersey zipper that rubs (both Castelli - go figure!) Yes, I choose to invest now (For my -many- dollars, I can't go wrong on Assos) but it's overly simplistic to say comfort is bought. Even with a $300 pair of bibs or jersey you still have to make sure the garment is made properly and fits.
Assos. They're worth it.
at 3:20 it looks like a GCN Romance!! lol
Hello GCN hi Manon nice job I like the topic... Did you knew some riders are in fact not on board with the use of a pad in their bibs... I know some and hear about their comments and for sure I meet and actually discuss this she said to me 'Just cut the padding and use the Lycra as it comes', and she is a world famous woman cyclist who holds huge records for ultradistance. Dig into it and get amazed on how many cyclist are going on riding without any padding.
I have two pairs for long back to back to back days as I have to clean one pair eventually and my rump gets raw even with the thousands of miles i have pedaled on the bike over the years ... once a saddle sore starts you are SOL and quickly become miserable .. same if a pair gets wet ... a change is ALWAYS welcome just like changing to sandals after your day is over makes your feet feel much better!
I must have either the perfect butt or the perfect saddle. Last year I did two 300km rides in a pair of swimming shorts and I was just fine. No chafing, no sores.
Your nuts must resemble a chamois pad
If you have finished a Tour, you are a proper pro
The only real pros are us bike couriers. Tour riders are simply bike courier washouts.
I wear the gcn bib shorts which i got as a christmas present , they are brilliant ,and do exactly as Manon says .
When I started, I didn't have any shorts. In the beginning I got a sore behind after 30 minutes, but after a few weeks I could go for more than an hour without shorts! I am blessed with a royal behind :P. I did buy a cheapish pair of shorts with shoulder straps though, and they do make it more comfortable, especially on rougher terrain they absorb shocks. Am am glad I got a pair, but my next shorts will be without straps, since I have a small bladder :D
I am more keen to indulge in a pricey bib shorts rather than a pricey saddle.
Yep, pricier bib shorts do fit better and move around a lot less. I once bought a nicer pair of bib shorts and then went back to an old favorite that wasn't so fitted, and finally noticed the difference. Old Favorite was relegated to the back of the cycling clothes drawer after that! I have a mid-range saddle (Astute women's saddle) but I can see why an expensive (and reliable) saddle is coveted. Hank can attest to the need for a reliable saddle, I believe.
Important to mention one point from the last 5 seconds, at the start of the video - don't wear underwear with cycling shorts.
Why not?
I think they mean 1 of 5 contact points.
1. Saddle
2. Left hand
3. Right hand
4. Left foot
5. Right foot.
How's about a video on choosing shorts? How do you get a good fit? How to make sure the pad is the right size and placed correctly? How tight should the grippers be to avoid rucking? Does anyone do a bespoke fitting service? etc., etc.
I see manon, i click. damn

I bet you do.
fundamental question- smb can explain me why they have much padding in bib shorts and other type of bycicle underwear, and why they not do seats with same comfortable padding?
1- a very paddled saddle isn't more comfortable than a chamois because your underside moves around it, so it doesn't ever mold to your sit bones form; 2- it doesn't eliminate chafing in your underside.
The padding in the shorts is allways exactly in the right place, while on the saddle that depends on your seating position. Also, on the saddle you would need much more of padding on the saddle. Also, it helps to have tight fit shorts to avoid any kind of chafing.
All in all that concept (padding in the shorts, not on the saddle) does work very well. But I guess you can also use a padded saddle instead. It will propably hard to find one fit for a road bike (where you usually sit in a rather bent position), though. And you would still have to think about what to wear as many layers or loose fitting shorts may cause chafing. I am sure it is possible, it would just be a little bit harder to get right I guess.
Love em... but I have two modes of operandi ... cheap Chinese alibaba ones until I ditch the necessary lbs until I get in the race bibs. Once you spent loads of money on 'em. Look after them. Don't fall off your bike. Wash them in cold water and don't dry them in direct sunlight. You might want to experience a skin suit with a thinner pad as it might be more comfortable , especially when temperatures go above 40c.
I also have both bib and regular cycling shorts, depending on the ride.
