Apologies folks - the HJC C10 is ECE 2206 approved in most of the world but NOT North America. I should have made this abundantly clear. There are actual material differences in the helmets beyond the DOT sticker. ~RF9

Thanks for confirming that there are material differences between helmets sold in different regions. I noticed discrepancies between spec sheets, but couldn't entirely discount alternative explanations. Nothing for it but to email my inquiries to the manufacturers.

Unfortunately, the North American and European HJC C10 are not the same helmet. The one we get in North America is inferior. I emailed HJC and asked if their DOT approved and ECE approved C10s are the same. They said, "The two safety certifications are tested differently so the helmet will be different as how they are tested. When it comes to structure and performance of the helmets they are exactly the same." This sounded like it was the same helmet with two different certifications (DOT vs ECE) depending on the market. So, I asked directly if the DOT helmet would pass ECE testing, and they said: "No, it will not pass the ECE testing as in North America the helmet only is able to pass the DOT certification. The two safety certifications are tested differently."
@@ianbrowns3427 to be honest, the desk jockey answering that email could just be bad at understanding English, your question or communicating. But I also wouldn't be surprised for a company to sell the same "model" of product in a market with an inferior safety standard that only meets the required standard, because that would be typical

the biggest difference ive noticed between cheap helmets and expensive ones is the expensive ones are usually lighter, quieter, and have better ventilation. Imagine how much different the market would be if they also did noise reduction on helmets for safety ratings.
Yeah and they have a much wider size range, up until last year I had a Scorpion ADX-1 which was great in every way except that it gave me headaches because even XXL was too small. After about a half a year of going to shops and looking for affordable modular helmets that fit me I tried a Schuberth C5 and it even surprisingly had a larger size than mine.
It seems like cheap helmets are something only for people blessed with average to small head sizes…
Nope they have better tech, MIPS and EPS quality. You wear earplugs for noise reduction
@@Simoxs7 i started with HJC helmets years ago and finally had enough money to buy a Shoei RF1400. After riding it for a year I understand why they charge what they do for it. Quietest helmet I've ever owned.
I also recently got an ADV bike and picked up a Sedici Duale, but that helmet rings my ears like nothing else. If anyone has a good ear pro recommendation I'm "all ears"
@@marxula555 Hey man, i strongly recommend Alpine Motosafe earplugs, just buy packet with both pairs, not much difference in price but i sometimes run normal plugs, but mostly on highways i'm running racing ones.
Get a case of 3M orange disposable foam earplugs, never worry about wind noise damaging your hearing ever again. About 11 cents per earplug.
As a previous AGV K1 owner, I can say with confidence that it saved my life when I got T-boned by an inattentive road user 6 months ago. The rest of my body was mangled-ish (shattered scapula and compound wrist fracture both requiring surgery) but the only injury to my head was a slight fracture to my left eye socket (which I attribute to having my head slam on tarmac). Would another helmet have done a similar job? probably but since I've actually gone and "tested" its capabilities for myself, I 100% plan to stick with AGV when I get back into riding in the future.
(Jus in case anyone might have wondered, I was fully discharged from my hospital a couple of days ago and have pretty much fully recovered save for a few range of movement issues that will sort itself out with some physio. Ride safe people

That HJC C10 is not ECE rated at all in the North American market. I called HJC and they confirmed that the USDM version of the helmet uses a completely different EPS liner in it than the Euro version. As such the helmet is only DOT rated, and therefore not nearly as safe as this video suggests. Buyer beware
Looked into this a little further and can confirm the information here is accurate. Furthermore looking on HJCs official website only the claim of DOT is approved not ECE. Can’t imagine this was intentional from F9 as they are short, sweet, to the point and unbridled…however this was a HUGE oversite in this video one that needs rectified.
I saw another comment on here about the HJC i10 which is snell 2020 approved. Snell has different degrees of ratings and I couldn’t find which rating it was other than it was snell approved but for $150 I doubt you can find better safer for the price

Had a big highside while wearing my AGV K1S and had no head injury at all after falling from 9ft in the air. Got another one as soon as I was able to ride again

@@Angel-wo8gv personally, i feel like the wind noise cancelation is outstanding! You dont really hear a lot of wind noise, but you can still hear car horns, engine noises and stuff really clearly, which is excellent for situational awareness. Overall, worth it for the price!

My AGV K1S is my track helment and occassional touring helmet. Fantastic lid.
I started with a AGV K1 then went to K6. K6 cost more and I think it is worth the price difference. Only down side for me is ventilation is lacking, always enjoy a one of these video's.

@@jordan9339 A bit. I had an Arai years ago that was worse, plus the buffeting from the windshield doesn't help. If I'm going for longer than, like 15 minutes, I'll put in earplugs, but I've been doing that for years.
@@jordan9339 My c10 isn't very noisy below 70 mph on my crf250 rally which blocks say 50% of wind but does not cause buffering either.

Excellent video. Worth remembering that a £100 helmet that fits will usually be safer than a £1k one that doesn't, so head/shell shape is important too.
God I wish there were gear reviews this good for any sport I actually participate in. Never owned a bike but also never miss a f9 video just for the production value.

Eventhough the BrIC is introduced to the ECE 22.06, it is only relevant for the rotational testing of the helmets. For this test only BrIC and the rotational acceleration peak are limited. For all other impacts of the helmets still the HIC and the linear acceleration peak are the only relevant limits.

just a heads up for those considering: the AGV helmet listed in description is currently $180, NOT $300. and the HJC is going for $130. a lot closer pricing that warrants comparison unless you're going for the ultra budget approach

The link in the description takes you to the non s version which is not 06 rated. But RevZilla doesn't have the s version so it's worth Fortnine to bait and switch, undermining the whole safety message of this video to get more of that sweet sweet $$
be careful, there are technically a few variants involving the numbers k-1 and k-1s... I would double-check which is which to be safe.
I was on the Scorpion website and they had their old 22.05 helmets labelled as 22.06 compliant... I pointed this out to them only after having bought an exo-gt930... and then I went on a mild rampage emailing various suppliers of helmets stating the language on their pages was false and incorrect and should be changed... I am sure I am beloved by customer service reps everywhere now.
Edit: the 22.06 was only on the Scorpion website... there were a bunch of other incorrect info about the gt930 on the various things that either did not exist on the helmet (emergency pull-tabs, inflation system ect...), I was mad.

Got my first motorcycle a few months ago, and the first helmet I got (mainly for looks apparently) was the Scorpion EXO Covert X. After ordering it, I found this video and learned about the ECE ratings. Returned thay helmet, and saved 100 bucks getting an Icon Airform Helmet with ECE 22.06. Thanks F9 for the constant flow of knowledge, it has helped a ton.
I got the at950 and love it, but have had my eye on a snowmobile helmet as it comes with a dual pane visor stock, even a heated option. I live in San Francisco and ride in rain all the time and the 950 pumps water onto the visor. I’m looking at the 509 R4, about $200
I think we need a deeper dive of ECE 22.06. I'm in the process of buying my starter helmet and it's baffling how few options I have that are certified ECE 22.06 here in the US with the deadline only a half year away.
ECE is a euro regulation, so it makes sense there aren't a bunch in US market

I've been wearing Shoei GT-Air helmets for the last 14 years. I've also been using Cardo communicators for a decade. With Shoei's Sena partnership now making it difficult to impossible to use the Cardo systems on the GT-Air II, I decided it was time to switch helmet brands. By the way, Shoei is not the only helmet maker that has partnered with Sena and made their helmets less attractive to Cardo users (or Sena users as well since your old Sena unit won't fit the new proprietary mountings). A couple of years ago, I bought an HJC CS-15 for use around town when I needed to do a quick run. It has performed very well. Its 2 biggest drawbacks were no dropdown sunshield and ear pockets what were so shallow that the JBL speakers on my comm unit pressed into my ears. After your review, I checked out the C10. Still no dropdown sunshield (there is an easy workaround) but the speaker pockets are just enough deeper to handle the JBL speakers. I wear an XXL and the C10 is a great fit just as the CS-15 was. HJC seems to do consistent sizing across its models.

Good stuff. A C10 fitting tip for those who might need to order sight unseen as I did: I got the HJC C10 ECE 2022.06 from the UK for $140 shipping included. My head is a true 57cm, intermediate oval, with no hair. The Medium 57-58 is *very* snug. Maybe it'll loosen with wear. The 12mm thick helmet liner in there could be swapped for the 9mm they make, but that is not something widely available. The US version will likely fit even tighter, as it has 30mm checkpads, not the 25mm that come with the EU version. I have a skeletor face and those 25s are nice and tight. My glasses fog easily when not moving even with face shield up. Removing chin curtain fixes that. The helmet fits glasses well and keeps out a *lot* of exterior noise.

I own a somewhat cheap HJC (SNELL actually) and a very expensive Arai and having never crashed in either i can say i do enjoy wearing my HJC more. It's just nicer in every area. But maybe not safer. Thanks for the video!

I really can't get behind this video. Sure the C10 is a good bargin buy. But your agv recommendation is "it looks more expensive" but its still a basic plastic entry level helmet. And your point against the N1 was that FIM isn't as stringent as you would have liked. No word on tested aerodynamics, upgraded materials, better ventilation or comfort or noise. Theres a lot of difference between the two that I feel was glossed over. Don't want someone to walk away with the C10 thinking there's no reason to spend more money on your head.
That's true, but the most important part of a helmet is *keeping your dome safe*. That's why people think they *have* to spend that kinda money. Someone looking to get into motorcycles might find a cheap used bike, but if he or she thinks you've got to spend *as much as the bike* to ride? Might think twice. That $100 lid would be perfectly fine for me.
@@DFX2KX But a lot of the time price goes into making a helmet safer. Better to get yourself into a fiberglass/composite helmet then polycarbonate. Better to have MIPS or similar then not. Both of those things add cost. The C10 is fine for the price point. But if you are safety minded there is certainly better, and worth paying the difference for once you understand what you're investing in.
I'd go for the AGV out of the choices here ( if it actually fit me) - always had and trusted AGV lids. The HJC c-10 makes loads of sense !!

I used to wear/still have an AGV K1 before I upgraded to a Shoei RF-1400. In that price bracket, the AGV K1 is REALLY tough to beat. I tried others and the features, comfort, quality, etc are almost unbeatable. The bobblehead look is real though as I'm a small.. great entry level helmet and would recommend

As a hardcore Arai guy ( 3 XD-4, 3 Corsair X and 1 VX-4 Pro) one XD-4 saved my skull, what Ryan didn’t talk about is what’s inside the helmet. Safety rating is important but so is the quality of materials that make up the padding, how well the vents work, how well the visor works, noise level. I find that these are the things that separate premium helmets.
Your points are persuasive as far as I am concerned.
My understanding is that in this video he is focusing on helmets where low price is a main criterion for purchase. Believe last year (or 2 yrs ago?) he focused on max safety.
Had an original xd....till I met some gravel with it and had to look for another lid.
Ventilation....at950 seems as good.
Quality of material....seems as good.
Noise....xd better but I wear ear plugs so somewhat errelevant for me.
Features....at950 by a mile.
The newer xd's....really look just like my original,not sure much has changed except even more money.
In the end a drop down visor,modular helmet that is pretty comfy for half the price of a new xd won out.
And I'm very happy with it.
As a fellow XD-4 user... man. I have a tough time considering it premium these days. The visor and shield removal process in particular is archaic, easily the worst I've experienced.
He talked about it in previous helmet videos. What makes premium helmet premium. Noise level is especially the most worthless criterion, sometimes to the detriment of riding safety and comfort (trapping too much CO)
I wear a HJC modular that I’ve had for 5 years now. Decent comfort, but loud. I tried on a new schuberth c5 today and omfg, I think I’m in love. So light and it felt like my head was being perfectly caressed. Now if only I could justify the $800 price tag…. This is going to be difficult not to buy.
I've had a few cheaper, heavier HJC modulars over the years and loved them, wore the hell out of them. Then I upgraded to an lighter-weight HJC RPHA90, and also got a Schuberth C4 Pro which is nice but I'm not fond of the chin latching mechanism. Both of those lighter helmets are OK but my fave modular is the Bell SRT. So before you buy the C5, check out the Bell too. Funny, in 35 years of daily MC riding I've never checked the safety rating of a helmet- I have always taken it for granted that they would do the job!
@@paulh6591 As long as they're ECE-rated they'll likely be fine. DOT ratings are entirely meaningless, however.

I'm the kind of person who after breaking my ankle last year just wrapped a frozen bean burrito and hot dog sausages around my ankle in towel with my belt to hold it, and never went to the hospital (also I'm still missing some range of movement on that ankle), and I've never went to the hospital for a wreck even when I could see my kneecaps (I also didn't take pain medicine either, and I had went into shock but still drove back home).
Head injuries though are not something to mess around with, its not like losing an arm, you have 2 arms, but only 1 head. Take care of that head, its the most important part of your body.
Interesting to see cost-efficient helmets, but I'd also like to see what the RPHA 1 brings as a serious racing helmet. It would mostly be the quality of materials, noise, ventilation, and aerodynamics, but I'd still love to see the logical and detailed review from him about it.
I'd be interested in a shootout with the N1, race star, Corsair, x15, ats 1R, Pista gp re, and something basic like the C10 or qualifier.
For a serious racing helmet you want good safety and aerodynamics.
Noise reduction is unnecessary weight, wear earplugs.
Ventilation systems? The same, they don't go hand in hand with least weight and best aerodynamics, a 'regular' helmet will therefore have better ventilation than a race helmet.
@@Liphzzy yeah, but one could have better noise, weight, and ventilation than another serious racing helmet. For example, Pista GP RR has really nice aerodynamics but that's about what it gets, and everything else is on the level of 'this sucks' for a $1.4K helmet. In the other hand, X-15 and RPHA 1 are already famous for being comfy enough in terms of noise, and ventilation, while maintaining great safety and aerodynamics for serious racing helmets. Less than 1% of buyers of these helmets buy them solely for serious racing anyways, so why not look for the comfort on road too? That's the things I wanna see from his detailed reviews. While I already know briefly how each of these FIM helmets do against each other, a lot of reviews use very subjective terms. His review would show much more details and technical specs to support his opinions, like how does X-15, RPHA 1, Pista GP, RX-7X compare to each other in terms of many things.
I wear a HJC fg-st helmet and chose it because it was the only one in the store at the time that actually fitted my head. I tried on all other brands and they either squeezed my head to the point of being painful or they just didn't fit me right. I thankfully haven't had any crashes but I am happy that I chose a helmet with the correct fit rather than something more expensive that was ill fitting.
ever since i start watchin fortnine i picked up 2 dirt bikes. 1981 xt250 & 2013 klx140L. picked up new chains, sprockets, and many many more things along the journey. both reliable bikes that get me From Point A too B and Light Trail Riding.
Informative enough, sticks to the core and necessary things that the video is titled for in the first place. Yet what I'm curious about is the choice of outro songs, a majority of F9's past videos have had pretty good choice of music, can it be listed in the video description in the future please?

My first helmet was a TMX Firebird for a motor store in the UK called Halfords, it was fibreglass, £49.99 in 1986 and was produced by a company who at the time also made builder's buckets. It saved my life when I t-boned a car whilst travelling at speed (I don't know the actual speed because I was knocked out)
The next one, I bought the following day after leaving hospital, was similar but £5 cheaper.
After a while, deciding to upgrade I bought a Nolan (polycarb) which I found had a split in the chin guard within a couple of days so I returned it and bought an Arai F1 Kevin Shwantz replica.
This was about 35 years ago I still have it but Im wondering should I replace it?
Yes, you should. The shell material becomes brittle over time (UV-rays and so on), from what I heard a helmet should be replaced after 5-7 years of using.
Yeah if it's 35 years old it needs to be replaced, absolutely. Not only do they wear out over time (the shells become brittle and the padding stops padding as well) but a) in 35 years it will have definitely accumulated small knocks and it's entirely possible it's already cracked internally, making it potentially useless, and b) helmet technology has improved since the '90s so you should end up with a much better helmet over all. You'll just have to be prepared to suffer the pain of change after 35 years of having the same helmet.
Hey Ryan! I appreciate this video but I can't really use the info on particular helmets very much as I live in India, where most of these are not sold or heavily overpriced. So, when I needed to buy a helmet for my new bike, I was able to use the information in your beginner gear and how to spot good gear video to figure out what helmet best suited me from my available options. I chose the MT thunder 4sv, if for nothing else then just for the fact it's one of the couple 22.06 rated helmets available in India, and I wouldn't settle for anything less. I am a size M, which gives me a fitted shell and it is PC with quite a few bells and whistles. Effectively, what I am saying is before watching this video and feeling bad that I couldn't be sure whether my options were good compared to those you have like with other channels gear reviews, I rather felt confident that I got the best safety available to me at a decent price and did not feel cock-blocked because of my country. Thanks for that. Something about fishing or something idk ....

I tried on the sizes several times, the XL is my size (useless info sorry). May I ask about wind noise?
I get up to speeds of 140 to 150 on average (well not ALL the time but a lot of times on the highway) and get to slightly over 170km/h (duke 390 2016 model).
I read somewhere that because of our Indian Jawline not being too strong, there Will be wind noise no matter what helmet 😅😂 huh? Who knows.

@@johnybrokeit I may not be the best Candidate to answer this, as I am currently in college and don't go on many long trips. Within college I wear my Pagri only. Due to this I don't have much of a reference for other helmets either. But I have completed a few trips about 400km each at 100-120kmph on my Hunter. At those speeds, the wind noise was noticeable but I was able to tune it out. Also to note is I have removed the Chin deflector for CO2 buildup.
Just watched all of the helmet videos last week, this is really useful right now!
I've pretty much stuck to AGV's for years now, my only gripe is that the interior parts tend to wear out quickly, otherwise they've been comfortable.
Everything is right in my universe with Ryan back in front of the camera lol
I really appreciate this information, it's good to know that the price of expensive helmets isn't really about better safety, but rather better comfort, noise reduction, quality, QC, etc.
That isn't really true just because some of the horrifyingly bad cheap helmets are quiet due to they thermoformed plastic shells as opposed to carbon that rings like a bell. Also, excessive padding can cause fitment issues, so those who just stuff it until it is quiet are not building better helmets. Overall, building a safe helmet is a surprisingly difficult task.
I'd be really careful with that. Spending more on a helmet can absolutely get you a safer lid. Fiberglass/composite is going to be better than a cheap polycarbonate. MIPS is better than no MIPS. And all that adds cost to a helmet. You also usually get those quality of life improvements too. The C10 is fine if that's all you can afford. But there's helmets that'll work harder to keep you safe in the event you need it.

So I gotta ask if the C10 isn't stamped with a ECE sticker where is the certification info coming from, and how can you be sure it's ECE compliant in the USA. I have my rider class next month and I'd love to save money and yet still have maximum safety.

@@Mathimilou i contacted HJC and they said each factory has separate lines one for DOT the other ECE they couldn't tell me if there was any manufacturing difference between the two. To make it even more confusing I emailed Fortnine and they said the HJC C10 is DOT only? however they have two listed helmets below the video one ECE the other DOT. I actually ended up getting a Scorpion EXO-960 for around 280$ I was more than willing to deal with the visor issue to have that ECE sticker. I reckon I should be able to keep the visor in place using a thread Locker of some sort.
Got to admit I've been swapping between Shoei and Arai for the last 30 years. At present I use a Shoei Ryd . One of my all time favourites is my Shoei RF-900 Chimera.
Important note for the C10 in the states: it is NOT to the ECE 22.06 standard.
So why is it that FortNine is claiming the C10 is 22.06 approved while the HJC North American website itself refuses to say as much? Can anyone get an Euro lid and an American lid and compare the two please? I actually refuse to trust a company that can say two opposite things and still be technically correct.
So wait, is MIPS better for rotational impact or is ece 22-06 better?

Apples and oranges! MIPS is a piece of slip plane technology that manufacturers can put in a helmet (if they pay the license fee) to reduce rotational acceleration. This would help a helmet pass ECE 22-06's rotational tests BUT... not every helmet with MIPS passes ECE, and not every ECE helmet has MIPS. Personally, I would look for the ECE 22-06 badge as your best guarantee. ~RF9

3 years ago I got tboned while wearing my at950. The guy hit be doing about 50mph and I landed (not slid or rolled) about 250ft away. My shoulder grenaded and my hips and back got pretty messed up but I didn't have so much as a headache from slamming into the ground. I ordered a new at950 before I even went into surgery because it saved my life.

What about MIPS ?
MIPS saved me from a from a brain injury when I was t boned at 35mph, high sided and was sent tumbling down the road rolled on shoulder and head. Zero brain injury, the doctor literally called in a colleague for a second opinion because he had never seen an accident like mine not have have at least a concussion at the end of it. That's MIPS for ya.

Dammit! I bought an HJC RPHA 70 22-05 because I didn't know about 22-06. :-( Here's something though that NEVER gets mentioned. In the rain, ventilation feels great, BUT fogging up is horrible because the air is poorly directed AND with the visor cracked open, water runs inside the visor, making your personal fog swamp even worse.
A helmet is only as safe as your ability to not have accidents.

glad to see buget ECE2206 options out now. I bought Shoei's NXR2 more than a year ago due to the limited choice of 2206 helemts. my old K1 was great, I'd get the K1S if I were buying a helmet now

Getting my first bike helmet after getting my M1 last week. Training course is on Friday. This video couldn't have possibly dropped at a better time.
One point which affects those of us with neck injuries (esp thinning neck discs snd spinal osteoarthritis) and that’s weight. 1500g is way too heavy. There are some great helmets now including those with built in sun visors that weigh in close to or under 1300g which are FIM approved. LS 2 carbon, Shark Spartan Carbon being a couple worth mentioning. Weight or lack of it matters.
I really wanted an AGV but just couldn’t get the shape of the helmet to fit my round head. So I ended up going with a Sedici Strada II and I’m pretty happy with it!

Well, am I lucky? I picked up a Scorpion AT950 for $100 USD from a prominent local retailer on their close-out shelf. Really appreciate the flexible use of a modular, particularly as a DS and ADV helmet. Ryan condenses complicated info down to the essential nuggets for those of us who are mathematically challenged.

Back when I had $150 HJC helmets I loved how comfortable and aerodynamic they were. Now I have helmets 4 times the price I didn't like riding with lol. So I went with an ADV helmet for my commutes and liked the airy feel and the detachable chin bar. I also mounted a LED spotlight on the peak just for those dark nights.
I'm surprised motorcycle helmets don't come with their own 'headlights' (pun intended) for added visibility considering how light, efficient and effective LEDs have become.
@@nephicus339 Shark helmets have LEDs in the front for visibility, Nolan and some others sell brake light modules. But yeah, movie "spacesuit" style LED head lights are really small and easy to implement.

I bought a Scorpion EXO R420 as a first time budget helmet and no regrets with it. First one saved my head in an 80mph crash into the dirt that ragdolled me and banged my head what felt like 20 times getting hit by a sledgehammer.
I've been using the Scorpion ADX-1 for 4 years now. The peak isn't really usable above 100kph as the noise from wind vibrations drive you crazy. And yes, it does vibrate the screws loose, so Loctite is a must.

I saw that budget HJC in the store when I went in to give my Arai Quantic/Contour-X in for Pinlock issues. It looked really good for the money and did make me somewhat question spending 5x the price for the helmet I brought back in........

I've read-ended a flatbet at 80 Km/h with my LS2 Arrow R, got a broken nose from the slight tilt that the helmet did, but nothing else. Couldn't recommend this helmet enough, would definitely buy another one.
