Back in the day we followed Jonathan from Austin's Liberty Lunch to Dallas' Poor David's Pub on consecutive nights. Such an awesome vibe. It was the best of times. The Modern Lovers will remain in rotation for eternity.
One of the best performers i never had the pleasure to watch live, brilliant, funny, talented. Jonathan Richman, one of the last great ones for sure. Music at its best. 10\10
Love this tune. It made me go buy the "Live from 6A" CD. Which also has the wonderful Edwyn Collins' song, A Girl Like You. Sadly, both of these song remind me of an ex-love of mine. Too bad she was bound and determined to go into the darkness.
i think he's doing the singing, rhythm and lead live, as well as the drummer live, with a backing track to follow along with (with the backup vocals and such... so no he's not lip syncing, the mics just keep dropping out leaving only the little chorus in the background...
no, that's just how Johnathan Richman is in real life. One of his biggest complaints is people saying things like that about him and his music. I just think he's severely misunderstood by the norm.
i saw him a few weeks ago in philly at a church. the only thing bad about it was the audience. it was packed with artsy kids. all the men had beards and horn-rimmed glasses. all the girls had short hair and plaid shirts. they were all swaying, not dancing, and i couldn't see him a bit. but his commentaries in every song were really great, and it's best to record it when you're there, cause you'll never get the same recording twice.
I actually know who this song was written for. My friend Jerry told me a while back, and I was blown away cause I kinda felt this song was written for ME in a way. Not literally, but it perfectly addresses what I was going through years ago regarding a good friend of mine that I was very worried about. Would always think about her when I heard this. Shame about the dropouts in this video.
@extremelybusy123 Thank you for taking the time to help me in life, being extremely busy and all. I don't get the impression that artfuldodgeress has the views that you rather hastily endowed her with. I think she was commenting more on the fact that she found herself, somewhat unfortunately, in a roomful of fashion clones. This can be a bit painful at times, as can any measure of "swaying". Besides, she was only lightly mocking. I believe everybody should be made fun of equally! Chillax.
I really like to know what kind of man did she leave JoJo for? Ik mean, why? Are there any cuter guys than him around? An where are they hiding, for Gods sake.
@extremelybusy123 I agree with you--both music elitists and haters are so very tiring. If haters have a purpose it is hopefully that, through their mindless vitriolic attacks, they make others strive to be their polar opposites! And yet in the spirit of sociology (apposed to boring political correctness), it's fun to delve into the finer points of group behaviour in a relatively non-malicious way, as I believe artfuldogeress did. Incidently, I,too, like to 'spread the love' whenever I can! Peace.
is he lip syncing? it looks like there was a technical issue at 0:44, where you stop hearing the lyrics but his lips still move. although, i guess the mic could have just cut out.
He is the best live show around. His silliness is what makes his live shows so great.
Sincerest, least-cynical "living legend" there is.
the tone on his solo sounds like a heartbroken drunk, such passion, such ruthless honesty there.
The ultimate “she belongs to the streets” song.
From git?

Ive just listened to this 10 times in a row! I cant stop hitting "replay"!!!
He’s one of those artists that sounds amazing live, even better live than studio.
Just had to stop and listen to a great version of one of my favorite songs by an incredible American songwriter and authentic rock'n'roll figure.
This guy charisma is so addictive to me😍
Nope, this is not a joke. Jonathan Richman is awesome
When that guitar kicks in my skin reacts!!! The best song Ive rediscovered for years!!
I saw him do this live on my birthday in 97, Sydney Metro. Just Jonathan & drums.

Who was it written for?
his band, the modern lovers had one of the first punk singles ever, john cale recorded their demos.Go read a book or something.
This is killer =p
He's more a comedian than a musician.
The bizzare combination along with a unique talent for folly weird me out with JOY!
Laundromat, Laundromat.........
think there is a backing track going on with bass, backing guitar and keys.

I am not sure if his mic cuts out or someone has dubbed a CD over the video. I do not think he is lip-syncing though.
