Its scary how many reptile owners don't know about this scary disease
Thank you! Bought your care guide! We had a baby leopard gecko lose a tail and had no idea that it could trigger MBD. We’ve since corrected diet, but he’s still stunted from the whole ordeal. He’s been doing well for the past six months because of a video of yours I came across when trying to help him. Thanks for your videos/advice!
aww thanks so much :) Glad he's doing better :)
I bought a baby gecko almost two years ago who had MBD when I got her from the breeder.
Your first video helped calm me down about it not being a death sentence, got her to a vet and started giving her the right supplements and she's doing great.
Aww im glad to hear shes doing better :)
When I got my gecko I noticed that his back legs were swollen and he wasn't holding himself up properly. It turned out that he had MBD, but it was in the early stages. I got a UVB light and his condition started to improve after a couple weeks. It's been over 6 months since then and he's doing great now and doesn't show any symptoms.
I’m new to reptiles and thinking about getting either a crested or leopard gecko and your videos are a fantastic resource that are really helping me learn more, so much better than any other sources I’ve found! Thanks for taking the time to educate people on these amazing animals.
Aww thanks so much!
Hey Leopard Gecko lady! You did a good job explaining why Leo's (and us) need vitamin D, I was surprised how simple you did it.
Also if your reading this, I only got a leopard gecko because of your videos, now I love my Bernie!
Great video, so important to know! I have a question- I want to upgrade my Leo’s tank to a more naturalistic tank and I was wondering, aside from spot cleaning, disinfecting bowls, and changing the substrate/deep clean every 6 months, how often would a naturalistic tank need to be cleaned?
Thanks! :) So spot cleaning, disinfecting bowls and stuff is all the same. The substrate, as Malik above said, if you have clean up crew, and live plants, you shouldn't need to change it very often. If anything I just need to add more dirt to mine lol
@@leopardgeckotalk Thanks for replying, Rebecca and Malik! I was considering going full bioactive with the live plants, cleanup crew, etc but I eventually decided not to because I already have problems with high humidity. I plan to just go naturalistic, with a dry dirt substrate, fake plants, more hides and make it look really nice
Amazing info to have as always! You've been a huge help to me in my efforts to give my gecko the best life possible
aww thank you :) Happy to help!
great video its shocking how many reptiles get metabolic bone disease from improper husbandry
thanks :) yeah its such a shame because with the right info it can be completely avoided.
Thank you! I only had a calcium and d3 mix before, but now I’ve got all that I need for my leo!
cool topic! thank 4 sharing
Thanks for watching!
@@leopardgeckotalk course your great!
Seriously love your videos. They're always so helpful and informitive. Thanks to your advice, my girl Circe is thriving, quite happy being handled, and overall seems healthy. Although, a slight brumation period seems to have left her quite lazy lol
Thank you, I really appreciate that :)
This is an excellent summing up of this wholly avoidable series of conditions. Well done!
thank you :)
I have watched every video and they are all so good and full of helpful information
Thank you :D
This person is amazing!
aw thank you!
Great content!
I suppliment my PacMan frogs by alternating calcium/d3 with vitamins. also, I use Repashy vitamin A plus which is in retinol form for better absorbing and only use that once a month. Hope that helps the potential frog keepers!🐸
OMG THIS HELPED SO MUCH
Thanks :D
Its beautiful to rescue one and help cure this
Hi I am getting my leopard gecko this weekend or next weekend so thanks for posting💖❤😚
Congrats! No problem :)
Great video! I hope this helps some leo's out there :)
I hope so too!
Hi there first of all what an amazing page you have. Myself and my 13 year old have learnt sooo much and today he bought his first gecko. Question we don't know how old it is. Is there any way of having a rough idea.? We also don't no what type he is as the reptile shop said they get mixed batches in. Many thanks. Keep up the amazing work.
You don’t know what species the gecko is? And the shop didn’t either? If not, that doesn’t sound like a reputable source.
@@nightinggale6470 no we know its a leopard gecko just not sure of the morph. Ie wild type. Mac snow etc.
EPIC another sterling video, featuring my "Bones" girl
Can you use your old fishtank light?
The reptile vitamin mix i bought actually has like 25-29% calcium which is the same as the calcium supplement next to it when i saw it in store. I thought i might as well buy the one that has the same calcium plus the vitamins.
Should I stop feeding my gecko everyday? Not sure what day exactly he hatched but, was told he was 2 months around the mid of July when I got him. Should I stop feeding everyday and how many insects would be the proper amount after feeding slows down.
Yeah, since it sounds like they’re around six months old, I’d start feeding every other day (then 1-2 times a week once he hits 12 months). About 5-8 is a good amount.
@@nightinggale6470 would you recommend four day's per week or three?
@@albeme5211 when feeding every other day it’s either three days a week or four days, depending on the week. It could be Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday one week and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday the next. One day with feeding, the next day without.
@@nightinggale6470 thank you! I appreciate it a lot . Keep up the great work 👍
I’m thinking of making a mat for the bottom of my Leo’s enclosure out of DAP aquarium safe 100% silicone and some 3-6cm river stones I used to use in an aquarium. I know stones are dangerous because they can swallow them so I thought encasing them all in silicone like a rocky mat would be a nice looking and easy to clean option for a substrate. Silicone can withstand very high temperatures for long periods of time and it doesn’t melt when heated it just gets harder. I’d be using an under tank heat mat, If I made the rock layer thin enough I think it would be able to pass through. What do you think about this?
They should have a suitable loose substrate for digging enrichment (such as a soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix) and overhead heating. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
Can mbd happend to a old lizard or just young lizard
I have the same shadedweller 7 percent. Is it bad that I have it on a twelve height inch enclosure? I'm waiting for my tall enclosure so I'm wondering if I should turn it off.
No that's fine :)
HEYYY! your leo looks exactly like mine!!
Ah yeah Maui is quite a common morph :)
@@leopardgeckotalk super cute though!
I gut load my feeders a diet that can effectively alter the calcium to phosphorus ratio near 1:1 for 48 hours. Then, I dust them with a calcium supplement, further increasing their calcium to phosphorus ratio to 2:1 hopefully. I recommend Mazuri Better Bug or Repashy Superload as these are some diets that I know of that are proven in studies to alter the calcium to phosphorus ratio in crickets.
@@urfavvmal00 Mazuri Better for crickets and superworms, Repashy Superload for mealworms. The amount of insects I’ll feed to my gecko are put into a container separate from their colony. No fresh produce is served during this time because gut loading diets apparently taste bad and the feeders will prefer the produce over the supplemented diet, reducing the effectiveness of the gut load. I use a wet paper towel instead. I only give these diets 48 hours before I feed them to my gecko because gut loading diets proven to alter calcium to phosphorus ratios will kill feeders within 96 hours from calcium overdose. Also, 48 hours is the typical time where nutrients are at their peak levels from the gut load and then they begin to drop the next day. Scientists claim that this might be due to the low palatability of the diet that causes the sudden decrease.
An even better gut load would be Zukudla as it’s proven to alter the calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D3, and vitamin E levels over the recommended minimum for insectivorous reptiles. Even after 48 hours the calcium to phosphorus ratio in crickets were still over 1:1.
My gecko is biting her slate stones is it fine and how do you stop her
That’s odd… are they her entire substrate? What’s her diet and supplement schedule? It’s possible she could be lacking something in her diet.
Hi my baby geko has a pic of stuck shed on the tail what do I do?
just soak it a little in lukewarm shallow water until its easier to come off !!
Where do they gain calcium in wild from?
Maui and my younger boy cheddar look IDENTICAL
aww sweet :)
Hey I have had a leopard gecko since march and just this last shed my lizard seemed to peel it off a bit early and it’s stuck in her eyelid and eye I have waited days and it’s completely white I don’t want to pull cause I am super scared to hurt her
If you can try to use a qtip or try to gently remove it. If its gone to far, get to a vet ASAP or the gecko could end up becoming blind
don't have much to comment, just boosting the interactions :)
Once a leo gets mbd can it go away?
I have a very young hatchling crested gecko, only weighing 1 or 2 grams, who I believe is in the beginning stages of MBD, I just got it two weeks ago and I am thinking it already had this going on before I got it, the breeder just didn't catch it before selling it to me. Its jaw is very soft and spongy, and it is unable to eat live insects yet because of this. I am adding a little extra calcium and vitamins to its pangea (I feed pangea with insects and occasionally growth and breeding diet) for the time being in the hopes its jaw will harden up before anything breaks or has too much deformation. Aside from the extra supplements, is there anything else I can do? I have experience caring for crested and leopard geckos with mbd but not any experience stopping the progression of it.
adding a low wattage uv light might help
@@apss5736 definitely looking into it, I have a fixture just need a bulb now
@@neonbug1615 also if its not too gruesome try getting calci worms and crushing them into a mushy paste so that the gecko can eat it as they are full of calcium too
@@apss5736 I will try to get some when I order bugs next, should be soon, for now I can crush up some dubia roaches for it
Nice just make sure that if these methods are combined that you don't overdose
I just lost my aft to stick tail he was 9ish years old I got him because the breeder couldn't use him for breeding (idk why) he didn't respond to the treatments and it was really difficult to watch so helplessly so many complications come with having to feed live food 😕
awww i'm so sorry to hear that :( If the gecko had stick tail then the breeder shouldn't have had him anywhere near any other gecko. Sounds like a bit of a dodgy breeder. At least you looked after him at the end, and gave him a nice home :)
@@leopardgeckotalk he was a little strange but he knew a person I'm friends with and just gave me the gecko (who I named azreal) because he wasn't interested in being bred I guess
I've had a few dream about maui 😅😅😅
gecko dreams are the best dreams
Yea
haha not if the gecko has escaped. I've had way too many of those.
I set up a bio active Leo tank a monthish ahi but didn’t put in a background l, and now I really want a background. Anyone got any tips or knowledge as to what to do.
Thank you so much for this but i had a question because i can’t really find a reliable answer so i thought maybe you would know something about this! Recently i took in a female gecko that was being re-homed and is said to be a little over a year old. When we went to pick her up i saw that she was extremely skinny. I asked the girl if she knows if the gecko eats normally or what it might be and she said that she feeds her but then the next day the gecko just won’t eat. I’m not sure is she was telling the truth because the gecko has been eating perfectly fine everyday a good balanced gecko meal. But she’s still very skinny. i already have a gecko named Gizmo and he’s younger then her but already very big and healthy! I’m not sure what to do. She’s very skiddish and has stuck shed on her back leg toes but i’m scared that she will maybe drop her tail if i try to help her. Any advise? please and thank you!
She’s pretty unlikely to drop her tail as long as you don’t grab it. Regarding her being skinny, it’d be a good idea to get her checked out at an exotic vet ASAP to make sure she doesn’t have parasites. Send in a fresh poop sample. Otherwise just give her a healthy, varied diet and she’ll gain weight.
@@nightinggale6470 last night i put her in a bin with shallow warm water and most of it came off. i also realized that i’m going to change the “eco” carpet she has because i think her nails have been getting stuck to i and hurting her. I’m going to go ahead and change it to eco earth
@@gigi-ux3yg ahh ok, it’s good that you’re removing the carpet. Eco earth isn’t the best option either, though, it tends to be dusty and hard on their joints. A soil/playsand (or soil/sand/clay) mix would be best. Or you could use a premade substrate like Arcadia earth mix arid or Terra Sahara from the bio dude

How is your gecko so big mine is a year old and he is still small.I feed him enough so it isn’t that i have another Leo and she was so much bigger at his age
Hello, my male leopard gecko passed away today, He was 9 years old. He was my first pet.
Im sorry😥😥
I have a question, can I use an exo terra medium low tank for 1 adult leopard gecko?
It’s the bare minimum. The Exo Terra large (40 gallons) or larger would be ideal.
Thank you for making this video. I have a Bearded Dragon and know how to prevent it in him, but LG are completely different with their care and had no idea what to do, especially when it came to lighting. So like my Gecko RARELY comes out in the lights are on. Especially during the winter he never does. So would a UVB light benefit him at all? I have a T5, 24 inch hood UVB light. It comes with a 5.0 light in it but I also have 10.0 bulbs. Should I use either one of these with Odin(my Gecko). He is on the very big side for a Gecko too. He is bigger then my 4 month old Dragon. I was using Rapashy till they both started having issues that I was able to trace back to all the junk that's in Rapashy Calcium plus and recently learned for both having a separate calcium and Vitamin D3 supplement is important. So I'm doing that now but I'm still concerned for Odin as I'm not finding good reliable info on Gecko care. So your channel has been a blessing.
Yes, UVB would still benefit him. They often cryptic bask (only exposing part of their body at a time). Make sure he has plenty of plant coverage for shade. Use a 5.0 bulb. And it’s strange that you noticed issues with Repashy calcium plus, I’ve never had any problems with it, and also know many others with good experiences
Hi! I hope you would reply. Lately I started to observe my gecko and I noticed that whenever she walks very slowly, her legs shakes. Is this normal? But when she walks at a normal pace or fast pace, she doesnt shake her legs. Please help, should I get worried?
Can I put a baby leopard gecko in a 40 gallon tank
Absolutely! As long as it’s full of clutter and plant coverage, and doesn’t have too much open space, they’ll do great.
Mine loves Waxworms and shes on the skinny side so what would you recommend for feeding wise i have crickets in her tank and she just eats when shes hungry they are dusted too and i feed her 2-3 wax worms twice a week. how can I get her weight up a bit?
Make sure the crickets are gutloaded, also try locusts if you can. Wax worms are great treats, but she'll gain healthier weight if she eats healthier food - if that makes sense 😂
@@leopardgeckotalk yes ty sm
I have an African fat tail gecko who has not been eating very well. It’s like he just doesn’t want the food. If I can get the food in his mouth he’ll happily eat it but won’t eat anything on his own. I’ve tried all the suggestions in your videos and offer him mealworms, Dubia roaches, solider fly larvae, and wax worms but he just ignores them. He will lick them if I cut of the heads but that’s about as far as he gets. I am also getting a deep heat projector and cannot find a dimming thermostat in the us. I would greatly appreciate suggestions!
What’s the hot spot temperature and how is it being measured (analog thermometer, digital, or temperature gun)? Switching to a better heat source will likely increase his appetite.
I strongly recommend getting a halogen flood bulb instead, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength). Herpstat is the best dimming thermostat but pricey. You could use a dimmer instead but dimming stars are ideal.
I just got a deep heat projecter and my leapord gecko won't even use it? He'll just stay in his hide
Give him time to adjust to the change, he’ll most likely start using it sooner or later. Make sure he has enough plant coverage. Although a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat would be more natural and beneficial, the levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength). Assuming he isn’t albino.
@@nightinggale6470 thank you
I only gave my geckos calcium with mealworms and then have a reptile light because that’s all the leopard gecko grave told me I needed that came with my leopard gecko kit
yeah never trust starter kits, most are rubbish or seriously lacking items that you really need. As I said in the video, you'll need a calcium powder and a vit & min powder. Also if the reptile light is UV, check that it's a safe % of UVB, and remember lamps like that usually need replacing yearly.
Could you help me figure out why my leopard gecko died. In February his eyes started getting covered in shed and then in may he started not eating at all. I tried force feeding him and he just wouldn't eat. Then, :'( he died on august 27th 2021. I'm so sad :(
im so so sorry for your loss. What may have happened was he was scared or traumatized from being unable to see so he refused food. Ofc there may be a deeper reason
@@rubythorstenson4269 thx
You should’ve taken him to a reptile vet. And no one can really help now as most people aren’t vets. The only way you would’ve found out was having a necropsy done after he passed. Also please never try force feeding a gecko, that would’ve put him in immense stress. I don’t mean any of this rudely, just for future reference. I’m sorry he passed
@@Elena-jj6eb thank you also we did take him to the vet and they wouldn't help at all.
@@Elena-jj6eb btw im just a kid this is my moms account
Hi
Can I leave mealworms to run loose in my geckos tank so that my LG can eat them as he pleases?
No. Mealworms aren’t healthy for their main diet, and giving them access to food all the time will make them overweight.
Hi I’m Alex and I sent you a email because I do have some questions because I’m getting a gecko in January thank you
I can answer your questions :)
@@nightinggale6470 could I put a leopard gecko in a tank where there is a heat mat and uvb and a deep heat projecter and when do I start feeding it stuff like Dubai roaches
@@Noname-lv6ck a tube UVB bulb would be great, but there’s no need for a heat mat, and a PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat would be best for heating. You can start feeding them dubias right away.
@@nightinggale6470 so the heat will get into there warm hide
@@Noname-lv6ck yes, though it can depend on the hide. They can also come out and bask. Just make sure they have plenty of plant coverage so they don’t feel exposed
👍❤🦎😁
Am sad because my parents say that if we get a gecko I’ll be done with it for 2 weeks that means that I don’t care about it anymore
Why will my baby geko not go in the most hide?
Is the hide see-through? What substrate are you using inside?
helo
Your info is almost correct! They need supplements and correct lighting. They need the uvb lighting to truly get the proper d3. You know how it works but not how to fix it completely. You should research some leading scientists. Leo care has advanced greatly! This is so terrible! The grow light does nothing for digestion by the way...
Did you even watch the video properly?
Why is my leopard gecko all white
Either it’s just their morph or your gecko is in shed.
My geckos spine is visible
Is it a baby gecko, or is it unwell? Best to see a vet if you're concerned.
Algorithm(:
thanks haha
