- Today we take in a sick leopard gecko that needs some serious TLC. After a vet visit, multiple vitamin injections, tube feeding, and weeks of antibiotics, she is now a totally new gecko!!

Shout-out to the previous owners who noticed something was wrong with the lizard and decided to give it to someone who could care for it rather than throwing it away like trash, and kudos to Emily and Ed for accepting the offer; you both not only help/rescue the animal (mostly reptiles), but you also teach us how to care for one. Too bad the previous owners didn't bother to do some research on basic care prior to getting it so the poor gecko wouldn't have ended up needing to be rescued in the first place. =+=
@@zyephenz8466 no that's true... But also there are so many people who get reptiles as a present or just from their parents as a this shouldn't be too hard.... I was in a reptile store a bit ago and there was this kid with this mom who impulse bought a snake.... The kid wanted to carry the snake home but the store owner was like let's put the little guy in a traveling bin and a travel bag... The mom was also terrified of snakes so she isn't going to take care of the little guy.... The owner did add a how to care for a snake book to their order but they asked the owner any thing what kind food and just basic questions.... Some people just don't care about what they buy... so I do hope that the little boy or gives it a good home once he realizes that he doesn't know any thing about snakes. Or actually does some research... Some parents just give bad examples and don't care about pets.

I agree I think it shows a good owner who can give there pet up to give give a better life.i really believe the first owner wanted to give her the best care but they did not know what they was doing and did there best with the information they had..

The Mediterranean house geckos around my porch light share three braincells across the entire species.
My gecko is a savage. He /she ( we dont know its gender yet ) bites off meal worms heads and leaves theyre body and they sometimes kills crickets then save them and they make the crickets feel pain before dying

Classroom pets have a very long history of mistreatment, leading most schools in my area to ban them all together. Which is sad because they make such a great educational tool, but irresponsibility can be find even in our educators. That's why I appreciate what you do. Picking up where others fall behind.
I think classroom pets would be just fine as long as they actually belong to somebody and go home nightly.
I had a teacher that would bring in her hamster sometimes. It was neat. At the time I thought that's how classroom pets are treated.
@@seofra8252 yeah surely someone has to be judged as legally responsible for an animal, leaving an animal for 9 months should have had someone in court on a charge of neglect
I think only low maintenance pets should be allowed as classroom pets, for example stick insects, giant african snails and pacman frogs that wont get handled by the children but are there to learn about and observe
I've noticed the lack of classroom pets but attributed it to the fact that I work in a high school. They seem more prevalent at the lower grades. However, I think that if a teacher does bring an animal into their class, they should take steps to ensure it has proper care. One coworker has strong rules against things like students tapping on the glass of his hissing cockroach enclosure. However, another brought in a betta fish and (to my horror) continued that misguided idea of sticking a porthos ivy in the small enclosure thinking it would get both food and oxygen that way. I talked her into getting some fish food for it, but I'd see students sticking pencils and fingers inside to get it to move. Poor fish didn't last long.
In my high school all the science teachers had at least one bearded dragon.
Basically one science teacher had a pair, didn't know how to sex them properly, and over the years they had enough babies that all the science teachers had at least one.
A lot of them would hand out on teacher or student shoulders during classes.
One day after school waiting for Envirothon practice to start (think mathlete or quiz bowl but about North American environmental science) I just walked around with half a dozen beardies on me.
In 9 months, not a single person who took care of that snake thought to go back and feed it/take care of it? That's kind of messed up.
Thank god it was something that had a chance of making it that long. Im glad shes in a better place now wiht people who will give her proper care and love.

My common boa went for a year without eating, even though she was offered food every week. A trip to the vet and a vitamin B shot solved the issue. She ate normally for the rest of her life. ie: 25 more years.
They might not have been able to go back.
I know my kid’s school was shut down suddenly in early March and the doors were chained shut. No one was allowed in, not even the administrators.
My kid’s school was on Spring Break when things got shut down, so kids still had belongings and school supplies left in the school. No one was permitted to go in and retrieve them until mid-summer. Then they finally allowed a few teachers to go package up the student’s belongings and we had to pick them up in our cars.
It was only then that teachers would have been able to check on class pets that they left behind during Spring Break.
I know a lot of school districts are now making it so that class pets are no longer allowed because of pets that got left behind when the schools shut down. They just decided that it’s easier to avoid the issue altogether and disallowed all animals.
It’s really sad.
@@Annie_Annie__ That sounds likely, but they should have been able to make an exception for a live animal. If I had know of it and been close I would have probably broken in to save the snake.

I’ve had my leopard gecko for over 12 years, it makes me really sad to see animals in this condition but the snake discovery team is phenomenal, thank you guys so much for being so generous and kind to reptiles of all species and ages! Y’all are amazing, keep up the great work!

She might be stunted and adorable, but deserves the respect of not being dressed up and stressed for our amusement.
You can't expect a rescue/zoo to care for their animals and then dress them up just for our entertainment, it's a little inhumane.
@@EverythingAnimations I get where you’re coming from but I’m not saying by any means Rex should be wearing the costume for an extended period of time. It’s a simple enough costume of a hat they could just place on her head or put on like a party hat, something that shouldn’t stress her by any means. I did not blindly type this without thinking of Rex’s health and safety in mind. I would have never written this if there were a jacket or something more strenuous involved.

Toys should be dressed up not animals, watching the painting with rex was bad enough, I hope they don't do that with their animals again, it was quiet hard to watch.
I think this is an adorable idea and I would love to see it realized 🥺 also for the other person in the replies Rex would let them know if she was actually genuinely uncomfortable in these situations and they would take her out. During the painting she was uninterested in the process, not distressed. She didn't care about what was going on because animals, while often very intelligent and emotional beings, are not the same as people. When these animals are upset they will show it with certain behaviors and I'd trust the people that have been keeping Rex for *years* to know her tells better than some stranger on the internet. Seriously. It's not a roadside zoo, these are responsible keepers that provide fantastic care doing the occasional fun or silly thing with their animal. Anyway yeah lmao I want them to put a little hat on her sooooo bad now!!

I love that you guys never rip on people who surrender their animals because they cant care for them. You never know what people are going through and perfectly decent people sometimes fall behind on pet upkeep and that shame/guilt can make things worse. Kudos to the previous owner for realizing they couldn't give her what she needed and props to you guys for being understanding and restoring her health. Now she can have a new home with people who have the energy/ability to take care of her. :) ♥

I think that these class pets could be a great way to learn about snakes, but unfortunately people never seem to take good care of them
It really depends.
I had several high school and elementary teachers who were Ed and Emily caregivers for all of their animals, snakes,tortoises, chinchillas,Guinea pigs,chipmunks,cats,dogs, fish,and bugs included. My favorite biology teacher in High School even bred her own isopods and feeder insects for the captive (but special needs) wild animals that would not have survived in the wild if she didn't take care of them. (She was also very clear about NOT doing what she did recreationally. She was an educator and biologist who previously worked as a safari ranger,vet technician, and researcher. Generally, if an animal is that ill or injured, sad as it is, letting nature take its course was her policy.)
She had enrichment activities and bioactive set ups way before I even knew what that was and well before anything like the internet reptile community of educators and professionals came up.
In general, I agree. If you aren't able or willing to learn everything you can about caring for an animal, it's best not to have one because you are responsible for that animals outcome, especially if veterinary care is something you can't or don't plan on accessing. (Although I exclude unexpected financial or physical/illness related hardships. Sometimes these things come up and life happens.)
I don't think that's necessary. Instead, there should be better resources like animal abuse hotlines for reptiles. It always bothered me that those services exist for mammals, but not for reptiles
Poor Rio how can anyone forget that they had this beauty still in the school ? If they forgot about her for 9 Months i don't wanna know how she was actually treated on a daily basis before covid hit. Anyone who would have atleast a bit of knowledge would have thought about bringing her somewhere else why the school is closed or atleast come by to feed her.

I hate classroom pets…. It’s better to hire professional animal educators then let regular teachers teach bad care and lack of empathy. I was going to give this teacher the benefit of the doubt and say maybe administration locked the school and wouldn’t allow them back to retrieve it but then they said euthanize and I realized no one there really cared for the snake…. Unless something happened to the particular teacher who owned it but I feel like they would have said if that were the case

@@phantomsrage6523 I just want to point out it seemsd they were doing the best they knew how considering they gave her calcium supplements and maybe we shouldn't judge people too harshly. Yes it's their responsibility to know how to take care of an animal but they could've gotten bad information and people don't know what they don't know and that's what videos like these are here for.

I'm really happy that gecko got a good home! It's sad to me that this whole situation was due to lack of knowledge when it comes to reptile care, but I admire her previous owner for recognizing she couldn't provide her with what she needed and surrendering her.
Your compassion for animals in all forms (the ones you care for, the ones you rescue, the ones that need homes, and even the feeders) always makes me feel a little bit better about the world. I am so happy for Cat and Rio being rescued by you guys, and for the people who brought them to you so they can have another chance at a happy life.

Thank you for not ragging on her owner during this video. So many factors can go into not giving an animal adequate care, and there is so much shame around surrendering a pet. Many rescue channels just spend half the video villianizing the previous owner, adding to that shame
Ragging on the previous owner is not helpful in a video at all... But to be fair to anyone that's upset, and to the animals; anyone responsible enough to own a pet needs to do their damn research and it is entirely the owners fault if their animal ends up in this condition. 🤷♀️

@@allieh8349 true, for sure pet owners should educate themselves before getting an animal! And also, we don't know if the previous owner tried to take it to a small animal vet who wasn't familiar with the species or helpful. I've had that experience with a vet who doesn't know the species and gives wrong advice or can't help with a reptile. We don't know the full story. Furthermore, being respectful of the people who surrendered the animal in the video makes it more likely that other people whose pet really needs to be re-homed will feel comfortable coming forward.
I have had my leopard gecko since I was 5 years old and I’m ashamed to say that he has quite a few toe tips missing because we didn’t know to give him a wet hide. Thankfully, we always gave him a good diet and didn’t keep him in sand. He’s very healthy now and his sheds are all great.
Most people have made mistakes in the beginning even with research. The important bit is that we learn from those mistakes, research constantly and provide up-to-date care. Sounds like you have done this. Well done!
I'm glad you were able to realize something was wrong and deal with the problem instead of letting the animal just get worse, like most people unfortunately do.
My cat's name is Mochi and her father actually has a cataract! When going to the end and finding that Cat found a perfect forever home, my heart soared. It was wonderful seeing the transformation and amazing bounce back for her! These videos are amazing because it really hits home how important it is to help animals in need instead of giving up. I'm so happy everyone was able to help Cat out, and now she can thrive!
For the condition she came in, her colors ARE SO PRETTY! So happy to see her go to a loving home! (Wish I could've taken her home though ❤)

I agree it really is sad to see how they are looked after.. I think it comes down to the care people think they need . But the truth is they need more care and they are not a ' easy ' to care for lizard like people think they are

This happens all the time with fish as well, it breaks my heart to see Betta fish in 0.5 gallon aquarium. It’s such a beautiful animal being mistreated and abused.

They might not have been able to get back into the school. Apparently it happened all over the country - schools were rapidly shut down and classroom pets left behind as “just temporary.” Some schools were good about opening campuses back up to rescue those pets… but others were not. 😢

@@iimuffinsaur Likely exactly what you think. Let that be a lesson that administration/ government/ people in charge often don't have the best interests at heart. They're more interested in looking good on paper (locking up everything, no exceptions even for live, beloved animals) than actually doing good or allowing those under their responsibility to do good.
It's a universal, and why many adults are grumpy. We risk our jobs for the chance to do the right thing every day, but every so often the "big wigs" will be completely unbending. Then it's on us: do we break in and go to jail after hopefully getting the pet to someone or call the cops and say we tried, knowing we're being evil to a critter in our care? It's disgusting and we as society need to change.
This case reminds me of my rescue beardie. He was fed ONLY super worms for the first year or so of his life. So when we got him he was super picky and didnt want greens. Thankfully now he is better. But he was Super obese and is now a little on the under weight side but we are working to get that back up and make sure he is very healthy.
It is absolutely incredible to me that you are using your voice (as a popular RUclipsr) to rescue these animals and find them homes. Animal rescue is not easy. On behalf of these reptiles, from the geckos, to the dragons, to the snakes, and everything else; Thank You!
I just lost my leopard gecko in Jan at 26 years old. It was rough but he had many wonderful years.

@camillajoc thank you. I tried to do my best and believe I did give him a good life. I have come to peace with it. Painted him a box and buried him in the back yard once it had warmed up. After a few months we ended up getting 3 new baby geckos because looking at the empty cage got to be to much but I didn't want to sell the stuff either. I found so much healing in being able to give all that love I had for Chris to these 3 new geckos (Nova, Chomper and Shade).
Always surprises me how people can really love their pets but then completely mess up the care. Good on the owner for doing the responsible thing but always frustrates me a little seeing animals suffer from something very easily preventable.
if think about how many people struggle with basic self-care, like just cooking, and then apply that to another life, then you start to see why

@@stellarlight5626 with most schools in the state the main way they solve problems is just removing the whole thing entirely or cutting out funding. killing the snake is cheaper than trying to rehome it. Even with popular stuff like my old high school where they completely cut out all funding and planning for football up until my senior year after the teams had rather unimpressive win-loss ratios for a few years in a row.
you should have a rescue wall. where you write down the names of all the animals that are rescued because of your store.

I've learned pretty much everything I know about reptiles from watching this channel (with more in depth research on the reptiles I want specifically, of course) and am super grateful for all the amazing work you do for these rescues as well as just the reptile community as a whole.
Omg I can't believe no one came back for the snake. At my school a teacher (well now retired teacher) owns and cares for the animals outside of school, and then 'loans' them to the classrooms, and he is really careful about making sure they're all taken care of.
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it... Would you guys ever do something like that? Have a classroom pet system? You could go into the classrooms and do educational programs every once in a while so the kids could learn about the animals.
@@starvingscientist I feel like this is a bad idea given that schools do not respect animals at all most of the time. Loaning out pets that is. They do sometimes go to classrooms and educate people but loaning out pets is a super bad idea as I said. So many class pets end up neglected and not having adequate care it's not really safe to just loan out your animals even if you have strict guidelines there is no guarantee anyone will follow said guidelines
@@stellarlight5626 and that's why you go interact with the classroom. Start a relationship with the school. I feel like it'd be better to know that if something happens they have a safe place and people who will care from them seperate from the school. If something goes wrong or seems wrong, the animal is removed from the classroom and is back in an environment they know is good, end of story. That's what my teacher does.
Plus this is more of an option, if you want an animal for a year, rather than a we are commiting to having a school animal for it's entire life and someone has to take care of it every year.
Owning a leopard gecko myself, I get so scared and sad when I see one in this condition. Please do your research before getting an animal people. Glad you guys were able to step in

My coworker and I recently rescued an abandoned corn snake. Left in a house at 30°c for three months, in a ten gallon tank. He’s about 4 feet long. Very skinny. But he’s doing so much better, and absolutely CRUSHES rats. He loves his new tank, and we have to fill the aspen up nice and high because he LOVES to bury himself in it. I hate how some people treat animals, but I’m glad there’s people like you out there who care and give them the treatment they truly deserve
Poor Boa. I was in a internship at a kindergarten when covid lockdown hit here. They had 2 congo snails (can't remember the exact species), that was fed predominantly cucumber, because they claimed they wouldn't eat anything else. But no one wanted to take them home, so i volunteered to do it. Got them on a way better diet and cleaned their cage and really made a better environment for them. When lockdown first was lifted i didn't bring them back, because we didn't know for sure if we would lockdown again. But a few months later i talked with them and no one really seemed interested in caring for them when i would leave the internship, and they weren't really letting the kids play or hold them either, so i convinced them to let me find a better home for them, through a Facebook group for snail lover's, and they found a great home 😊
As someone who has had a recent spontaneous interest in leopard geckos, *and* someone who has experienced toe issues; I’m so happy mochii made a full recovery and got a new home! Leos truly deserve it all :D

I was thinking the same thing about the teacher. She had to be in a regular classroom that belonged to someone, and that teacher should have known the snake was there. I secretly hope the rest of the staff knows what happened and that teacher that left her there is known as an animal abuser.
right, the school or anyone else for that matter would not have let this happen to a dog or something. but they had absolutely no heart for the snake.

I just lost my leopard gecko today, her name was also mochi and she was almost 7. She was very sick and there was not much we could do, one trip to the vet and she was asleep for good. I loved her so much and spent alot to try and help her. rest in piece my mochi and i wish this gecko a long, healthy, and happy life!
16:40 the one time I went to the snake discovery store I saw Rio and she was just curled up and as energetic as a statue lol. One of the employees said they often doubted she was real.

Me so sad having 5 Leopard geckos myself. Two of mine are special needs I hope she goes to an amazing loving home when she recovers (I just finished the video I’m so happy she went to a loving home!!)
Recently we had a lizard we owned called yoshi, he is leopard gecko and his tail went very skinny (means he is unhealthy) but recently we began giving him a wide range of foods. Hes getting way better now. This video reminded me that im not doing tooo bad but still.. anyways im glad I could share this.
Update if you wanted it: Yoshi passed away of old age sadly. We fought very hard along this way but it was his time to go
I’d recommend starting away from meal worms as they can be quite hard to digest in large quantities

Just a reminder that wax worms arent very healthy!! Sure they may make the tail look fatter and fuller, but if your gecko's diet consists of a steady amount of wax worms this plumpness could very well be just fat. Please move the geck off of waxworms as a steady diet and move more towards calciworms, crickets and possibly hornworms or Dubia roaches if available. Wax worms are great as treats but they are definitely unhealthy and bad as a staple diet! I know this is probably a lot to take in and I promise I'm not scolding you but I care about your geckos health as much as you do and I wanted to share as much helpful info as i can.

@@Gingerblossom6969ily yup! We normally use meal worms, but sometimes he needs some fat for the tail. I have tried calciworms but he just wouldnt budge, maybe i could mix them in, somewhat like Emily did. Thank you so much for videos like these! You're doing a great job educating people with the comprehensive video here. It's also SUPER nice that these end on a happy note - I know it's part of the process to decide which animals' stories to tell and which (the not so happy ones) to deal with yourself and leave off camera. The good news after a bad start makes for a great story - it's important to celebrate the positive and all that! :)

It's amazing how many more animals you can help now that you have adoption island and people know to go to you for help! Mochi is a perfect example with how she came in to be fixed up before finding such a good home!
:0 I rescued an abandoned kitten and named her Mochi a few years ago! This is incredible that my new love of reptiles brought me to this amazing video with a gecko named Mochi that ended up being called ‘Cat’!!

It’s a shame she got to such a shape, it’s always really heartbreaking to see any animal suffer. But can we take a moment to appreciate that the previous owners realized that they couldn’t take care of her and found professionals with the knowledge and experience to give Mochi the best opportunity to get better. Admitting that you are wrong and that somebody could do better than you is not easy, so kudos to them for finding better.

One time when I was really young,
My cat squeaker, had one of her insides almost rapture, and her paws were bleeding, she had to go to the vet ASAP, and after she was done from the vet, She had to stay in a 6-7 foot tall, and 8-9 foot long cage, she had a cat tree 🌳and food and water and had her fave bed at the time and now she is very happy sleeping at the end of my bed and getting cuddles and pets and just puring away
Good grief. Poor girl. I hope she's feeling better soon. My big boy Charlie is about the same age and roughly weighs about 100 grams. He has the super gene. People need to really research before getting reptiles. Thanks for helping her out.

If it was a new class, they wouldn’t have known him. Last years class would assume that the teacher had it covered. This is 100% on the adult in that situation.

I just want to know why the teacher of the classroom didn't even try and go "hey, there's an animal in my classroom. Since there's no telling when we're returning, can I at least remove the animal from the classroom and potentially rehome it?"

Oh! That sweet baby! I'm glad she found a great home. She looks a lot like my boy gecko so this really hit home for me. I have a boy and a girl, both about 7-7.5 years old.

Absolutely love the work you do to help these animals. That school abandoning Rio for 9 months is inexcusable! I really hope she finds a good home with a person who gives her all the love and fusses she deserves. If there wasn't a great big fat ocean between me and the US I would have adopted her myself. Keep up the good work!!!

That story of Rio is unreal. Like what did they tell the kids? 'This is how we handle our problems kids! Leave you pet then when you do that too long just euthanize them.' What the heck!?!? Thank goodness she was rescued! She is beautiful!

I’ve only seen 3 leopard geckos so far in real life. The one I saw the most was a real sweetheart, surprisingly calm. I’m glad this baby can get help and the owner knew when to give her to someone qualified.

Oh man. If I had the room, I’d take her in a heart beat. I’ve got a massive soft spot for geckos and she’s soooooo pretty. They always hate being in water. It’s a bath for me too.
Hi! You probably won’t remember, but my sister, Emily, (yes, y’all have the same name) and her boyfriend went up to Minnesota to see his family and went to your shop to be able to send me pictures. I really wanted to go but unfortunately I couldn’t. They saw you (Emily) and got a picture together. They also gave an employee a painting I did and a letter and were told that it was going in a pile of other fan mail to be opened on camera. I wanted to comment on this video to be able to tell everyone that reads this that doubts that y’all are actually friendly in person, that Emily (Emily from Snake Discovery, not my sister) is the sweetest person ever. She made sure to stop and talk to my sister, and take a picture, and was very very nice. So, thank you Emily for being so sweet both in person and on camera. You truly have made a huge difference in my life, and many others too. ❤️
