    Omg! My gecko was kinda reluctant to interact (he wasn't like super stressed out because he didn't wag menacingly his tail or anything, but he was annoyed) and today I tried to lift his humid hide and scoop him. It worked! He didn't run away, stayed calm, walked in my hands. He seemed less avoidant afterwards and I could finally feed him! It was the first time after a week since his arrival (he wouldn't eat by himself)! Thank you so much!

    leo is one of those reps that can really be tamed in my opinion. I acquired leos both from stores (back when i first got them) and rescues.
    a lot of them r really scared and suspicious at first, but they r small (i think they know lol) and they got the instincts to get away from u so its understandable , so id say please have patient with them. Another thing is don't get discouraged, and just because your gecko might be mean and bitty don't give up on them yet lol. (you can always wear a glove if your scared of bite). Lastly, when you r trying to handle them, just do it slow, you can use one hand to distract them then use the other hand to scope them up from below. Id say once they r on your hands they behave a lot better and don't let them walk all over your shirt or whatever because you might not be able to reach them let say they r on your back. So the best way is just to let them walk on you arms or hands but just place one after another so you can control them really well. And if their tail start wagling just leave them be for a quick min or 2 so once they have calm down you can continue. So just repeat the process for some time and they will most definitively get used to you. I also agree when handling geckos try not to be too quiet cuz that freak them out even more. So play some low volume song next to you or that sort.

    I got my gecko about 2 months ago and I was getting worried that he was never going to get better because he would run so fast anytime I got any where near him. Now he’s so much better
    First thing I started off with was putting my hand in the tank for it at least 10 minutes a day
    As he got more comfortable he would walk on my hand and then walk off
    Then he soon started to climb on my hand every time I put my hand in the tank
    Soon after he let me pick him up
    Once he was comfortable with me picking him warm up in my sleeves
    He still gets spooked by sudden sounds or sudden movements but he trust me.
    I was able to get him like this within a 1 to 3 week period
    Some geckos scream some geckos hiss some bite it all depends on your gecko and you have to take time because it’s not something you can rush into. I recommend leaving your hand in the tank for a couple minutes a day, and padding their head or chin, but the best thing I recommend is just picking them up and letting them sit in your hand so they realize that they’re not gonna get hurt if they’re around you

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  5 лет назад +11

      Leopard Gecko yea, also I’ve been meaning to ask you about eco-earth. All the pet stores recommended sand and Calcium-sand, but I know that sand causes impaction but at the same time I want a loose substrate. I know in the UK you guys have earth mix arid but in the US it’s hard to find a safe loose substrate. I’ve been keeping my Leo on paper towel. Today I put in eco-earth. Do you think it will be OK to transition to eco-earth or should I stick with paper towels? I want to be safe but at the same time I want it to look nice. And also I feel like loose substrate is such a good enrichment item I noticed my Leo likes to dig in his humid hide a lot.

    This came at the perfect time! I've had me new girl for almost 3 weeks. This past week and a half I've simply had my hand in the tank to get he acquainted with my presence and this evening i held her for the first time since coming home! All went so smoothly and surprisingly, she didn't rush off my hand when i allowed her to step back onto the floor of her tank. She actually hung out a little longer before stepping off. This video was the perfect reassurance to move on to the next step, and feel confident with how I was going about things. Thank you for your fabulous and informative videos. I have a leopard gecko named Sam, and with him I have a small technique that I like to call the "Trust Boop." It's a way to see if you've had the gecko out for too long.
    Basically, you gently tap the gecko on the nose. You do it slowly and calmly, and make sure it's a soft boop and not anything that can hurt them.
    If you boop it and it doesn't move away or get spooked, it means your gecko trusts you and isn't afraid of the environment it's in.
    If it flinches and moves away, you may want to put the gecko back in the tank as it is beginning to get skittish and freaked out.
    It is recommended that you boop the gecko before even taking it out so that you know if it's alright with being handled at that moment.
    It's a really simple technique that I've been using on Sam ever since I got him. He's still under a year old, but he responds to it well and it helps me know when he's calm enough to be picked up or when he needs some time to himself.
    I hope this was helpful :>

      wow never heard of this before, I'll definitely be using it! I imagine getting all up in their face might stress them out, but if I do it carefully it should be fine? It would at least avoid extra stress if he's not up for it. Anyways, thanks a lot for the tip!

    Got my gecko at Petco and he was a very angry boy from day one. We were able to eventually tame him and we got to hold him and stuff. Then we got a cat and dog, so we couldn't bond with him as much since the furry pets begged for attention much more. He eventually was no longer tame. He began to bite again so I was worried that we wouldn't be able to bond again, and I saw this. I am happy and am going to try and re-tame him.
    Edit: this is 2 days later and he let me hold him :D

      I totally understand how ya feel but that's the way allot of reptiles and amphibians are , they are not going to even come close to being like our furry friends and of course that's what makes them different 😊. I think they honestly have a very small memory ( short term) after all we know that it's not very big ☹️ but we can just love and accept them for the way they are and try not to get discouraged or heart broke if they don't show to much affection. They are just so cute and we want to handle them often , I have 5 and a bearded dragon and the beardie is a better one when it comes to them showing that they like you lol but just remember all your animals like you ( if you're nice to them ) they just have different ways of showing it . 😋 Have a good day ☺️

    Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this! My son's leo Trix (Bellatrix) is very easy going and was our first gecko. Our second gecko is mine, Puff(Hufflepuff) and has been very skittish. I've mostly let her (him? Too young to tell) be, to let her get used to its new home. But I will be trying all of these tips 🥰

      Hi, i recently got my baby snow leopad gecko around 2 weeks ago and i have some questions. Whenever i use uvb he never basks in it like the behaviour shown by your geckos. Also he rarely comes out of his hide and when he does its either really late at night or whenever it thinks im not there. His temperatures are perfect, he is eating, pooping, sleeping properly its just that he never comes out.

    I’ve had my juvenile leopard gecko for a little over a week now, I haven’t handled him at all for a week so that he gets used to his new enclosure, and I make sure he is eating properly. And he’s been eating perfectly! No trouble eating his mealworms and crickets, I was scared since this was my first reptile, but he’s been doing great. Yesterday I handled him for the first time and he was very calm, didn’t attempt to run away or bite once! I’m so excited to him grow up!

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 4 года назад

      Nice! Just some tips: Make sure the mealworms make up no more than 25% of their diet. Try to offer as much variety in their diet as possible. Roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Superworms and hornworms can be fed occasionally :)

    I have a baby branded gecko Id rescued that I’ve been wanting to begin handling for a bit now. She’s never threatened by the tweezers I use for her food, so after this video I thought I’d try handling her for the first time.
    Took about 5 minutes, making the little noise I chose, she crawled onto my hand, stayed for about two minutes, crawled up my arm a bit, then crawled off! She was so peaceful, not stanced up at all!! Thank you so much for your tips!!! This was so freaking exciting and helpful!! ❤️

    I've had my girl for a little over a year now I think she's a year and a half, and the past few months have been fantastic with her! She always is pretty moody to be handled but if she notices I'm near her tank she'll come out and I'll talk to her for a bit and maybe pop her a cricket or a worm to reenforce good things. She likes just chilling on my shoulder and doesn't like being held. Just a personality quirk I think!

    Got my leopard gecko today. He was a little wary at first but he got quite comfy real fast. He decided the most interesting place to be was my back where i could barely reach him XD. (Also after seeing a lot of leopard geckos tails i now realize that my gecko must have dropped its tail in the past because it doesn't have any grooves down the majority of the tail)

    Omg!!! Your geckos are soooo pretty. I recently cages my 2 leopards together in a 40 gallon. It’s going amazing they never fight. I was a bit worried as one of thems a bit bigger but she’s super chill and they no joke sleep next to each other

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 года назад +1

      Please separate them ASAP! 40 gallons is the recommended size for one gecko, and absolutely not big enough to safely house two together. They will compete for resources. Sleeping next to each other may be a sign of dominance. I have seen countless cases of geckos seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other.

    I have a three year old leopard gecko and for the past two years I stopped handling her regularly, recently I have been trying to get her used to me handling her about every evening I’d try to do a session of handling time. I’d try to look up ways on how to get your leopard gecko used to handling, but all I found was information for new owners. Trying to do a handling session each evening became very difficult, one because of my schedule and because she began to do this thing I call the ‘gecko roll’ were when I’d try to pick her up she’d roll over. Because I could tell how stress I was putting her through every time I’d try to handle her I stopped doing the handling sessions. But if there is a way I can some day get her used to being handling regularly it’d be very nice, but because it seems there is no hope I guess regular evening handling (were I am actually successfully handling her) will be something that will never happen with her.
