I was out at the park the other day on one of the first properly sunny days of the year and there was a boy there with his bearded dragon, both enjoying the sun ☺️ it was great to see.
The zoo I used to volunteer at in Denver has a lioness with MBD, she was kept as a private pet when she was a cub and not fed properly. She's doing great now though! Her growth is stunted but she is more athletic than anyone predicted.
Her previous owner would agree with you! The story goes that she and her two brothers were given as a birthday gift to the prince of, uh, I forget where exactly (a small country) and he promptly went "wait, I don't know how to take care of LIONS" and started contacting zoos.
One thing I've found with the 6 month bulbs is that the actual light itself lasts for roughly another 6 months. So I have 2 fixtures. One is a UVB bulb that gives off UVB, the other is the pervious bulb just for lighting.
Just to clarify, you're recommending to keep the lights after the 6 month mark just to use for ambient light or heat? Wanted to ask because at first i thought you were saying that they're fine to keep using because "the light still turns on", but given the context of the video that seems like probably not what you meant!

@@finthefishsep20toma You have the right idea with the first part. I keep them for light/heat since they still work for that, but I make sure the bulb that's actually gonna give the UVB is new.
Another tip, especially if you get a dragon + enclosure from someone else, and something I do no matter what: change the UVB bulb as soon as you get it!
As an exotic animal vet, I approve this message. Another helpful hint. If you purchase a UV meter you can measure your bulbs to try to sneak out a few more months. But you have to measure, otherwise you may miss when the uv part of the bulb fails.

I got a “ubv” light at a pet shop and the person was reassuring me that it was the right one for a bearded dragon. But it turns out it was literally just a normal light. Luckily we found out pretty soon. Never going to that pet shop again
That happens a lot. There's also the problem of the uv coil bulbs, which don't produce nearly enough uv yet are constantly sold in enclosure kits marketed for bearded dragons. They can even be damaging to dragons as well

got over my fear of snakes especially after what iv experienced when I was 6 years old , it was a nice day playing in the river and a snake jumps out from between few rocks and attempted to strike at me , been scared of snaked fir a few years tho slowly learned that most of them are just cute noodles xD tho still wouldn't mess with a wild one nah 😅

Yes, both oxalates and phosphates react instantly with calcium to form highly insoluble compounds. That effectively makes the calcium biologically unavailable, if they're eaten together. Calcium phosphate is apatite, the mineral that forms the basis of teeth. They're pretty obviously highly resistant to dissolving except under extreme conditions. Calcium oxalate crystals are one of the most common forms of kidney stones -- again, highly insoluble. If one consumes a diet rich in oxalates, the oxalates can circulate in the body, and essentially absorb calcium from the tissues.
Just a note of caution regarding bringing your small-medium reptiles outside for UVB, please be extra careful if you live somewhere with birds of prey. I've heard a lot of horror stories about reptiles and even small dogs being carried off by hawks.
Yes. Agree. I hold my lizards the entire time they sunbathe which means I get burned so I need to wear tons of sunscreen, hats, etc. I have 16 lizards so it's important every member of my pets gets time outside. But scary how birds have flown overhead when they see me holding my lizards. I see any big bird overhead I scream loud, stomp my feet and make myself look huge. Everytime they fly away thinking the sweet morsel of my lizard is not that tasty with this crazed bigger animal holding them.
My little guy (panther chameleon) passed away recently due to old age, but every late spring and during summer time I used a flexarium in our garden. It’s a mesh cage basically that can be closed, but no predator can reach in. I just moved it around during the day so it’s always partially covered by shade, so the chameleon was able to avoid too much sun exposure. It worked wonders, kept my baby healthy, and I was able to leave him and do my work. :)
Absolutely true. I used to be a veterinary assistant for 10 years, and I had a red-tail hawk swoop down and fly next to me at eye height to check out the small yokie I was walking…it was cool and creepy at the same time. Twas a bold bird!
Goober head is MASSIVE, I hope that wonderful chonky boy is able to get the surgery he needs. Dragons are such loving pets, my sister had hers for around 12 years before he had to be put down. He was such a lovely and tolerant boy, and loved laying on the pavement on our porch when it was sunny :)

I had gotten her from a large chain pet store, bc I didn't know any better at that time, & the vet i had taken her to said it wasn't anything i had done wrong. It broke my heart losing her. It's so important that they have proper care from day one. Now I have an adult who is happy & healthy. She's my baby. 🥰
I saw these babies when I visited on Friday! Poor things :( I wanted to adopt them both immediately but my landlord would hate me. If they're still available by the time that I buy a house I'm 100% coming for them
a great way to tell is to watch for yellowing on the bulb base. they tend to turn yellow over time so once you see that yellowing start, it’s definitely time to change! a great product to see if you need to change your UVB bulbs is to use a UV test/sensor card or UV emitter sensor. the cards turn purple if UV is still being emitted. the sensor emitter will cost a little more but can give you a an exact UV rating. checking once a month is a good idea, most cards can be used 500 times and are less than $10USD. using both these methods together is almost a fool proof way to make sure your animal always has proper UVB lighting.
This was honestly difficult to watch. When I first got my Beardie, this was my biggest fear especially after she laid her first clutch of eggs. Luckily, I did my research and she didn't get sick at all. I'm glad you made this vid, tho. It helped me relieve some of my worries and that I was doing everything I can for her to keep her healthy.
I eventually want to get one but they seem a lot more difficult than I can work with right now, leopard geckos and a corn snake are way easier all together than just the baseline care for berdies, if I had the money I would get a blue tongue skink though, they sound a lot easier and cooler, definitely once I have the money a must have reptile for me, I'll only get a bearded dragon if I have the perfect setup and can get a cool morph I just really like learning about all reptiles, it keeps my knowledge up to date for the ones I have and the ones I want in the future and it's just interesting
Honestly, Beardies and BTS aren't too different, the main thing being some localities of BTS need higher humidity. They're also a little bigger so ofc they'll need a little more space. Really easy to care for, though! I feed my BTS grain free dog food and assorted greens/veggies and he's been doing really well.
Bearded dragon care seems overwhelming and it did take me a full year to save up for the proper enclosure and fixtures but I now know that going to expos and shopping second hand I could get a second or third bearded dragon enclosure for a lot less than I originally invested. I'm honestly looking to upgrade my girl in a custom built cabinet now.
Started with a curiousity with reptiles, in particular snakes sparked by your channel. A little over a year later I have a jungle carpet Python and am considering a career with reptiles ☺️ keep up the good work!

When we bought our beardie, he only ate 2 types of lettuce and mealworms. We had to teach him to eat other insects like crickets, other vegetables, and calcium powder. He came from a store with a good reputation, the poor guy. He still looked good, but I think that's because he was so young

I couldn't imagine my life without my beardie now. She stays in my purse during the summer and is such a cuddle bug. I have other animals cats, snakes, leopard geckos and crested geckos but it's usually my beardie that I can chill with with out of all my reptiles.
A couple years ago I rescued a bearded dragon for about 2-3 years from a friend and he was low with calcium, after a year of giving him baths, proper lighting, and being spoiled with insects, he was all good as new, and good to be given to the previous owner! ❤🦎
This video is perfect timing! I just got a bearded dragon, and her past owners did not take good care of her. She is malnourished and had never had a fresh salad before we took her in. They also did not handle her or give her enough enrichment, so she has sores on her lips from rubbing against the glass to try and get out. I had been looking for signs of MBD in her, so this video is so helpful! Thank you so much!
I got a bearded dragon on my birthday in March, she was a rescue and she had tail rot, and some of her scales were damaged and she was 3 years old. There's so much information out there on how to take care of beardies and other animals. There's no excuse for straight up neglect like this. I really hate people sometimes.
Listening to what causes it I’m thinking, this is basically Rickets. While other deficiencies play into Rickets, calcium deficiency is a major one. I say this as someone with Rickets and without supplements and treatment, it cause bone softening and in severe cases, complete lose of usage of legs

Thank you for bringing awareness to this! When I worked at PetSmart we would have so many various reptiles brought in with MBD in just heartbreaking condition to be surrendered.the worst part is that this is preventable with adequate care! please do you research before buying a new pet!
I’m doing a project on diseases that cause problems for animals I love watching your videos for biology class because of you I have been able to do amazing work on the project my teacher brang his pets to study and I’ve been using resources from science class but when I’m not in school I’m learning from you

As a shelter worker we do get alot of clap back from people for our "way to high" adoption standards. sadly some things can be prevented with proper care and are if occoured not reversable as diseases as MBD. Breaks my heart knowing a perfectly fit animal has now to permantly suffer or gets put down because people dont wanna put in the effort in their pet care
Such a tough subject. I'd love to see, in the future, a video on the actual requirements for keeping a bearded dragon because I know almost no casual pet owner gets told what they actually need. My brother had one when we were kids and had good UV light but it ate only gut loaded crickets. Maybe some commercial pellets. That's it. And it lived in a tank I know is too small.
My beardie, Mako, is a really fortunate case of MBD. His prior owner to,d me that she gave him no lights and kept him from 8 months. He was 7 1/2 inches when I got him. His brother, Goblin, passed, but Mako is about 11-12 inches now, and can walk fine. He walks funny (Holds up his hind legs real high), and his hands are both bent wrong. Nonetheless, he is doing really well and loves to run around and jump, and I love his so much.

Thank you for giving the bearded dragons a chance. This is so sad and it just is very important to do research and know how to care for reptiles. Also important to know they require vet visits regularly and blood work and fecal tests. It gets expensive but to keep pet healthy. I wish pet shops explain this. I am much more experienced than well I first got my bearded dragon.
Thank you for covering this common and serious topic! Getting the right set-up and diet for a dragon requires WORK, gotta do the research and also keep up with maintenance of the bulbs and such. Reptiles have different requirements than mammals (like dogs or cats or hamsters) after all.
I love your videos, I watch every one of them. I don't have any reptiles yet! but that key word is yet. Today I learned that UVB bulbs could run out of UVB. I had thought that there was something about the bulb that just made UVB so it would last as long as the bulb did. I'm so grateful you put these things out for people to learn. =)

I recently noticed my beardy started having shaking in his back legs. He had a cyst on his hip so I thought it had left an impression when it got removed but it's got worst and he is reluctant to move. Glad to have seen this video.
I always learn so much about reptile care, and this is just scratching the surface! Let's me know I have lots of research to do before I get my first reptile. It's kind of exciting!
Do frogs need UVB? I got my tomato frog UVB because I’ve heard it was helpful, but I still want to know if I needed to get that. (I won’t get rid of the UVB, though.)
another youtuber (animal1 guy) had some success doing what was essentially physiotherapy with a beardie that had MDB. she wasnt cured, of course, but the bearded dragon regained a lot of mobility. might be something to look into
For ongoing conditions, a good term is "manage". how to "manage" the disease to maintain good quality of life. From the way they act in the video, those two still have plenty of love to give
I’m getting my brothers beardie soon he has totally neglected her but she’s such a sweet soul. I honestly shudder to think that my own brother would do such thing shes luckily not in to terrible of shape because every time my mom visits him she tries her hardest to give her proper care while she is scared of reptiles I really appreciate that she’s trying her hardest. Why……why do people buy expensive(or any) animals and then blatantly ignore their care? Why when good advice is freely available? Why would they let it get this bad(and worse)? Just why?? Why are people so damn stupid? I have a leopard gecko that has this or seems to have this. Her legs in the front are a bit different and she kinda looks like a bulldog but she can move around very well. She is my first gecko and I love her very much and she’s such a sweetheart and is such a strong baby! Thank you for letting me know more about the topic! My neighbor used to have a bearded dragon named Dundee. He was so fabulous, and I loved going out there as a kid/teen with my coffee and sitting on my neighbor’s porch or in the yard as Dundee enjoyed the light and eating the dandelions. One of my favorite memories is when my dog Brutus, the absolute most gentle Bull mastiff in the world, got to meet Dundee, and they took a 4-ish hour nap in the yard with Dundee sunning himself on Brutus’s side. For any potential Karens, my neighbor was an experienced reptile handler/rehabilitator as well as an experienced dog parent, and he and I were never more than about a foot away from the boys during their nap time.
Hey so I've unfortunately had to turn a few cases of mdb around with Leo's and it is a lot of work I love repti boost by fluke's as well especially for the Leo's however for dragons or beardies I make a slurry I now do it just in general as part of there regular diet and try to give it to them atleast once a week. What I do is when I go shopping for my greens for the week I buy a bit extra I cut it off the stems if there are big ones and I always get about 4 diff types of greens some yellow and green squash and regular acorn or butternut squash usually butternut since that is more readily available I skin/peel anything with skin and and put it all in the pot I boil it down for a while I do this so all the nutrients is not only in the veggies but in the water and of course so it's nice and soft then I save atleast a cup of 2 of the liquid to use as my liquid for the slurry I then put it into like a nutri bullet or any blender and mix it all up I keep about a week's worth out and freeze the rest u can also use an ice tray which works well to not waste and portion control .!!! U can also add bugs if u say have a big with good nutrients that ur animal doesn't like or is to big to feed said animal once u take out what ur going to feed u can add some bugs and reblend it I don't recommend doing it when u make it Bec it won't last as. Long my baby's absolutely love it even the ones that didn't like greens wud slop it up I use a like baby syringe and just put a drop on the tip of there nose and they go to town
I adopted an mbd beardie and one of my treatments for him was hydrotherapy. He had his own kiddie pool outside with a bathing rock which he used to get in and out on his own. The swimming helped my little boy to regain some muscle mass in his legs. Beardies are actually surprisingly good swimmers and some can hold their breath up to 15 minutes! Of course I would never recommend letting a beardie swim unsupervised because there is always some risk of drowning especially in the beginning when they're not yet used to the water.

Aw that's cute! Supervised sun time is really great for many reptiles (very cautiously with albinos) it gives them lots of natural uvb
When I was in university there was a girl who would walk around with her dragon riding on her backpack. Always brightened my day to see.

i wonder, is that the same principle why people (or cats) with chronicle kidney disease can have a calcium-based binder for the phosphate?

I had gotten her from a large chain pet store, bc I didn't know any better at that time, & the vet i had taken her to said it wasn't anything i had done wrong. It broke my heart losing her. It's so important that they have proper care from day one. Now I have an adult who is happy & healthy. She's my baby. 🥰

a great way to tell is to watch for yellowing on the bulb base. they tend to turn yellow over time so once you see that yellowing start, it’s definitely time to change!
a great product to see if you need to change your UVB bulbs is to use a UV test/sensor card or UV emitter sensor. the cards turn purple if UV is still being emitted. the sensor emitter will cost a little more but can give you a an exact UV rating.
checking once a month is a good idea, most cards can be used 500 times and are less than $10USD.
using both these methods together is almost a fool proof way to make sure your animal always has proper UVB lighting.
This was honestly difficult to watch. When I first got my Beardie, this was my biggest fear especially after she laid her first clutch of eggs. Luckily, I did my research and she didn't get sick at all. I'm glad you made this vid, tho. It helped me relieve some of my worries and that I was doing everything I can for her to keep her healthy.
I eventually want to get one but they seem a lot more difficult than I can work with right now, leopard geckos and a corn snake are way easier all together than just the baseline care for berdies, if I had the money I would get a blue tongue skink though, they sound a lot easier and cooler, definitely once I have the money a must have reptile for me, I'll only get a bearded dragon if I have the perfect setup and can get a cool morph
I just really like learning about all reptiles, it keeps my knowledge up to date for the ones I have and the ones I want in the future and it's just interesting
Honestly, Beardies and BTS aren't too different, the main thing being some localities of BTS need higher humidity. They're also a little bigger so ofc they'll need a little more space. Really easy to care for, though! I feed my BTS grain free dog food and assorted greens/veggies and he's been doing really well.
Bearded dragon care seems overwhelming and it did take me a full year to save up for the proper enclosure and fixtures but I now know that going to expos and shopping second hand I could get a second or third bearded dragon enclosure for a lot less than I originally invested.
I'm honestly looking to upgrade my girl in a custom built cabinet now.
Started with a curiousity with reptiles, in particular snakes sparked by your channel. A little over a year later I have a jungle carpet Python and am considering a career with reptiles ☺️ keep up the good work!

When we bought our beardie, he only ate 2 types of lettuce and mealworms. We had to teach him to eat other insects like crickets, other vegetables, and calcium powder. He came from a store with a good reputation, the poor guy. He still looked good, but I think that's because he was so young

I couldn't imagine my life without my beardie now. She stays in my purse during the summer and is such a cuddle bug. I have other animals cats, snakes, leopard geckos and crested geckos but it's usually my beardie that I can chill with with out of all my reptiles.
A couple years ago I rescued a bearded dragon for about 2-3 years from a friend and he was low with calcium, after a year of giving him baths, proper lighting, and being spoiled with insects, he was all good as new, and good to be given to the previous owner! ❤🦎
This video is perfect timing! I just got a bearded dragon, and her past owners did not take good care of her. She is malnourished and had never had a fresh salad before we took her in. They also did not handle her or give her enough enrichment, so she has sores on her lips from rubbing against the glass to try and get out. I got a bearded dragon on my birthday in March, she was a rescue and she had tail rot, and some of her scales were damaged and she was 3 years old. There's so much information out there on how to take care of beardies and other animals. There's no excuse for straight up neglect like this. I really hate people sometimes.
Listening to what causes it I’m thinking, this is basically Rickets. While other deficiencies play into Rickets, calcium deficiency is a major one. I say this as someone with Rickets and without supplements and treatment, it cause bone softening and in severe cases, complete lose of usage of legs

thank you on the emphasize on the treating it and prevent it from making it worse. As a shelter worker we do get alot of clap back from people for our "way to high" adoption standards. sadly some things can be prevented with proper care and are if occoured not reversable as diseases as MBD. Breaks my heart knowing a perfectly fit animal has now to permantly suffer or gets put down because people dont wanna put in the effort in their pet care
Such a tough subject. I'd love to see, in the future, a video on the actual requirements for keeping a bearded dragon because I know almost no casual pet owner gets told what they actually need. My brother had one when we were kids and had good UV light but it ate only gut loaded crickets. Maybe some commercial pellets. That's it. And it lived in a tank I know is too small.

My beardie, Mako, is a really fortunate case of MBD. His prior owner to,d me that she gave him no lights and kept him from 8 months. He was 7 1/2 inches when I got him. His brother, Goblin, passed, but Mako is about 11-12 inches now, and can walk fine. He walks funny (Holds up his hind legs real high), and his hands are both bent wrong. Nonetheless, he is doing really well and loves to run around and jump, and I love his so much.

Thank you for giving the bearded dragons a chance. This is so sad and it just is very important to do research and know how to care for reptiles. Also important to know they require vet visits regularly and blood work and fecal tests. It gets expensive but to keep pet healthy. I wish pet shops explain this. I am much more experienced than well I first got my bearded dragon.
Thank you for covering this common and serious topic! Getting the right set-up and diet for a dragon requires WORK, gotta do the research and also keep up with maintenance of the bulbs and such. Reptiles have different requirements than mammals (like dogs or cats or hamsters) after all.
The way she held the lizards on the chest was great. They behaved so well and we got to get a good look at the patterns on their backs.
I love your videos, I watch every one of them. I don't have any reptiles yet! but that key word is yet. Today I learned that UVB bulbs could run out of UVB. I had thought that there was something about the bulb that just made UVB so it would last as long as the bulb did. I'm so grateful you put these things out for people to learn. =)

I recently noticed my beardy started having shaking in his back legs. He had a cyst on his hip so I thought it had left an impression when it got removed but it's got worst and he is reluctant to move. Glad to have seen this video.
I always learn so much about reptile care, and this is just scratching the surface! Let's me know I have lots of research to do before I get my first reptile. It's kind of exciting!
Do frogs need UVB? I got my tomato frog UVB because I’ve heard it was helpful, but I still want to know if I needed to get that. (I won’t get rid of the UVB, though.)
From what I understand, even if UVB isn't needed for an animal its presence typically leads to healthier animals.

another youtuber (animal1 guy) had some success doing what was essentially physiotherapy with a beardie that had MDB. she wasnt cured, of course, but the bearded dragon regained a lot of mobility. might be something to look into

Why……why do people buy expensive(or any) animals and then blatantly ignore their care? Why when good advice is freely available? Why would they let it get this bad(and worse)? Just why?? Why are people so damn stupid? And don’t say”oh they probably didn’t know better” with the amount of information available that is not an excuse, and in any case, your animal LOSING the use of their limbs is a pretty damn obvious sign that something is wrong!! Arrggghhhh humans drive me crazy!
Instead of covering there salad in calcium, I cover the crickets in it and then feed them to my beardi.
I have a leopard gecko that has this or seems to have this. Her legs in the front are a bit different and she kinda looks like a bulldog but she can move around very well. She is my first gecko and I love her very much and she’s such a sweetheart and is such a strong baby!

My neighbor used to have a bearded dragon named Dundee. He was so fabulous, and I loved going out there as a kid/teen with my coffee and sitting on my neighbor’s porch or in the yard as Dundee enjoyed the light and eating the dandelions. One of my favorite memories is when my dog Brutus, the absolute most gentle Bull mastiff in the world, got to meet Dundee, and they took a 4-ish hour nap in the yard with Dundee sunning himself on Brutus’s side. For any potential Karens, my neighbor was an experienced reptile handler/rehabilitator as well as an experienced dog parent, and he and I were never more than about a foot away from the boys during their nap time.
Hey so I've unfortunately had to turn a few cases of mdb around with Leo's and it is a lot of work I love repti boost by fluke's as well especially for the Leo's however for dragons or beardies I make a slurry I now do it just in general as part of there regular diet and try to give it to them atleast once a week. What I do is when I go shopping for my greens for the week I buy a bit extra I cut it off the stems if there are big ones and I always get about 4 diff types of greens some yellow and green squash and regular acorn or butternut squash usually butternut since that is more readily available I skin/peel anything with skin and and put it all in the pot I boil it down for a while I do this so all the nutrients is not only in the veggies but in the water and of course so it's nice and soft then I save atleast a cup of 2 of the liquid to use as my liquid for the slurry I then put it into like a nutri bullet or any blender and mix it all up I keep about a week's worth out and freeze the rest u can also use an ice tray which works well to not waste and portion control .!!! U can also add bugs if u say have a big with good nutrients that ur animal doesn't like or is to big to feed said animal once u take out what ur going to feed u can add some bugs and reblend it I don't recommend doing it when u make it Bec it won't last as. Long my baby's absolutely love it even the ones that didn't like greens wud slop it up I use a like baby syringe and just put a drop on the tip of there nose and they go to town

I adopted an mbd beardie and one of my treatments for him was hydrotherapy. He had his own kiddie pool outside with a bathing rock which he used to get in and out on his own. The swimming helped my little boy to regain some muscle mass in his legs. Beardies are actually surprisingly good swimmers and some can hold their breath up to 15 minutes! Of course I would never recommend letting a beardie swim unsupervised because there is always some risk of drowning especially in the beginning when they're not yet used to the water.
