I started playing guitar back in January and TODAY, I can proudly say that I cracked the dreadful fxxxing "F" chord. I cannot express in words this joyful feeling. Thanks for the tips.
try to concentrate on just barring the high e, b, and low e strings, so strings 6,2, and 1. the other three are being played by your other fingers with the e shape so it’s not necessary to barr ALL strings.
The guitar could very well suck. I was having a lot of trouble until I finally noticed that the action was way too high on my guitar. In other words, the strings were far too high over the frets, making it too much of an effort to hold them down. After watching some videos on how to do it right, I took out the bridge and sanded it down to where it should be. So much easier to play after that! Most new guitars have the action higher than it should be and it has to be taken down, by you or somebody who knows how to do it.
Buy a guitar with low strings, that would help a lot to most beginners. The high strings will double the pain in your fingers and it really gives struggles in pressing the strings.
I was dreading this chord but honestly after about 20 minutes I've nearly got it consistent! It's easier then I thought it would be I think the D chord was the hardest for me I still struggle occasionally with D
This video was so comforting. From hearing you say exactly what I've been thinking and worrying about and the comments by all the other beginner guitarists about how they're struggling.
I played exclusively power chords and a few other easy chords for a year, and that helped prime my finger strength and flexibility for the F bar chord, which I am picking up with relative ease now. Patience is key!
Great video. F chord can be tough for beginners. For finger strength, Planet Waves makes an exercise tool to work out your fingers to make them stronger. You can put light gauge strings on your guitar to make it easier to play. You can also get your guitar set-up by a guitar tech, or watch some guitar set up videos that I have posted since I am a guitar tech. Have a great day.
I always thought the heaviest gauges of strings were sold to beginners because almost no one else were buying them . I've been playing 35 years and 11's are the heaviest I've ever bought and that was one time only .
Thank you! After a whole 20 minutes of learning this chord, I now consider myself as master guitar player. so I'll be going on tour next week. Stay tuned!
1 month in Justin - 15 mins a day - will be trying this tonight for the first time - I wondered why the F wasn't in any of my 'beginner' books at the start - mr. plod but loving the routine!
Hey justin im 25 years old. I have been wanting to play the guitar for years. i never found videos to explain it right. Now i have found you and the way you explain everything makes it so simple. i have been practising with your videos 2 weeks now and im loving it. than you very much for the videos. my progress is fast thanks to you.
I was struggling to get this chord correct really fast for sooooo long. Just watched your video for 2 min and now it works perfectly every single time xD Thanks a lot mate!! Appreciate it
I am a beginner Justin on the guitar. just 6 months in now. and finally found a easier way to play the F chord that works for me. Someone told me to practice my A , E , and A minor changes with the middle, ring and pinkie fingers for a week or so and it is a lot easier for me now. thanks for the video
After two years of playing the f chord while not playing the high e string at all, and wrapping my thumb around to play the low e string, yesterday I had an epiphany and covered the high e, the b and the g strings with a small barre chord with my index finger. Much easier! This is not the recommended way, but it works for me. So, I'm basically unteachable.
@Megos Hong IME open F more than barre F is the challenge for endomorphic builds with shorter arms, small hands and shorter fingers which concidentally tend to be both less bony or flexible. The problem here is getting sufficient pressure on both the B & E strings with the first section of the forefinger with inadvertantly muting either or the G or E string. I've mastered all forms of the chord, but I find open C impossible with a front finger on presentation. The key for me was to rotate the wrist and fingers so the forefinger presents inclined and angled to its side which mini barres the E & B strings, with the other supporting fingers splaying naturally at the angle to form the chord cleanly. Whilst this works, the downside is it slows common progression transitioning from, but particularly to that open chord because of the angular wrist change. e.g. D to F, Am to F to Am & G to F to G. That said. Ultimately, though harder for the non-ectomorphic of smaller stature, time and persistance in application in conjunction with adaptation to one's individual physiology will see competency with it achievhable for most.
I found that the reason i had trouble with the F chord was because i muted the B string with my middlefinger and after i discovered that it was alot easier. Always thought it was the bar i had trouble with, maybe this can help others too.
I love the sound of this chord and I'll try giving it a while practicing. This was helpful; neat that there's three ways to practice. Thank you God bless
Merzie Marie Joy Gemoya I understand, I found it incredibly annoying at first, but the more you keep forcing yourself to play it, you'll eventually just get it
i have small girly hands and i managed to do it. if toni lommi who chopped of the top of his fingers and django reinhard who had 3 crippled fingers on his fretting hand can manage to play the guitar and even become very prolific players then you can manage to play barre chords and play the guitar too. and if you dont feel like playing barre chords right now there are a lot of songs that dont require learning them. but you can still do it. try lighter strings and lower your string action. i will also quote this comment from a different video: "I work in a guitar shop and one day a guy was in the acoustic guitar room doing a great rendition of Foo Fighters Everlong. He was facing the other way. I said " hey man , thats sounds ace, do you need a hand?" , Regular stuff i say to everyone. Dude turns around and has his index finger as a nub , his middle at the lowest knuckle and his ring finger off at the tip and pinky full. WHOA!!! I said "dude ! That is AMAZING! You're a champion!! He kept playing and he was making it work , lots of barring and whatnot. THEN! Another guy comes in to the shop, has ONE ARM! I didn't know what to think. He asked to try a guitar and i said ," no problem man , i'll grab a strat , plug you in." He asks , " Can i get a strap?" . I go grab a strap , and dude is AMAZING! He uses his arm nub to bar chords and mute strings and only a slight tuning variation. Moral... IF YOU WANT IT , YOU CAN DO IT! People are awesome!" P.M.A positive mental attitude. guitarist with smaller hands and shorter fingers are not rare at all. so just keep at it. there are even lists with small handed players on the net if you are curious.
5:50. I spent years struggling with the simple 4 string F chord. I had no trouble with fretting strings 3 and 4 but always struggled with the mini-barre on strings 1 and 2. If I got one string fretted the other buzzed or was muted. I tried the roll-the-index-finger-sideways trick but that didn't work either. Then through trial and error, I discovered what you demonstrate at 5:50. Getting the palm of my hand on top of the neck lines the pad of my index finger up perfectly with both the e and A strings and I can just press down and mini-barre both with no buzzing or muting. I use my thumb to mute the 5 and 6 strings (not trying to play the low E string). It works and with a little practice it's no more difficult to grab than an open C or G chord. F chord solved!
That trick when you set the bar REALLY inspired me. I swear. After I learned that, I started doing crazy stuff. It was like figuring out algebra for me it was crazy! You helped me figure it out with ease in like just the first 2 minutes of the video. But I'm watching the rest. Thanks again!
I'm sticking to the 3rd baby one for now, but I'm really struggling to get the F on the high E string with my pinkie. It just won't bend to hit it... :(
I'm confused your pinky should never hit the F on the E string for this cord. for an F your index finger/ first finger should be on the E/B/E strings on the first fret, middle/2nd finger on the G string 2nd fret, ring finger on the A string 3rd fret, pinky/4th finger D string 3rd fret.
Struggled for ages with this one, practicing and practicing, figured I'd just have to avoid songs with the F chord (the expletives write themselves, hey?) until one day I found a song I liked (Pirate's Life of all things of course) and it required a capo on 5. For whatever reason, something in my fingers and head clicked and I was able to do it. Keep practicing everyone! And thank you, Justin. You were my first teacher and I've learned a lot from you. Still have a ways to go on my journey and many many other rite of passages to clear.
I can't even play the easiest way of playing the F chord when I'm actually playing it in a song. Like I have such a difficult time holding both the first two strings with my index finger. It's so frustrating.
Thank you Justin, I have switched from flat picking to Finger style picking ,or the claw method , For the Blues, Hill country country style, Delta , and so on.. and You have been my go to guy for the chords I forget (it Happens) , The 3rd way you show for the F chord is the one that works best for me ,The thumb wrap is a bit hard, but with Practice it gets easier, same with the d minor ,I thank you for the awsome way you teach ..
pretty tough, but not impossible at all, actually pretty easy i got it in 5 minutes, the trick is that the finger has to be over all of the strings, ( bad english sorry ) what i mean is it has to cover all the strings and be even FURTHER, and not end on the same line as the thickest string, actually pretty easy when u know that, but damn its hard to switch chords with that :D
Nimity Tei thank you so much this was the single most helpful piece of advice anyone has given me on this damned F chord. I can finally play it clearly!!!
Rolling the index finger slightly sideways to use the "harder" parts of the finger to barre was a excellent tip. You really actually made me able playing it cleanly. Now i just have to practise a bit to not take three hours to get my fingers placed right.
What! Here I am, almost a year later from my last comment. I can play it fine, but not in an actual song. My procrastination has gotten the best of me. Begin working on this chord early on ladies and gents. F = Frustration. That's all I can describe this journey as.
For folks having trouble with the F-bar, if you push your elbow in a little towards your body and the guitar, it'll help naturally position the hard bone in your index finger with the frets and can make it much easier to pull this off. With your hand positioned this way you can also slightly "pull" your hand into the strings while pressing down to not need as much pressure as trying to just press the strings down with hand strength. It's still going to chew up your index finger for awhile, but I learned this trick and it made it much easier to get the notes to ring consistently.
I finally got it. As recommended by Justin, I did lots of timed chords. When I finally became able to play it in a song, I was just playing the song and letting the Fs sound like crap and not slowing down at all. After doing that for a while, it started sounding good occasionally, then more most every time. I'd been working on it, on and off, for about a year. (I started playing when I was 50.)
One of the first chords I learned in lessons in the 70s. After the first couple weeks my teacher was happy with the sound and said I had strong hands to pick it up so fast. I wonder if it was because I also worked with horses which requires a lot of hand dexterity. I barre my D on the second fret, too.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!! tried for about an hour on this and gave up. Came back a month later, changed my hand positioning, and aced the bar chord! thx so much
Thank you for your tips. I have struggled big time. I have tried the bar chord. But know I have a bit more understanding I can just go for it. God bless
My guitar teacher taught that old school method, and honestly I was able to nail it within two hours. That variation is really loads easier than the big barre one, give it a try ;)
Thank you so much for this lesson, it's not only that it's generous in the sharing, it's also how much you really help saying it's hard and even the masters like you struggled with it.

try to concentrate on just barring the high e, b, and low e strings, so strings 6,2, and 1. the other three are being played by your other fingers with the e shape so it’s not necessary to barr ALL strings.
Oww 😚
Ah same
I cried lol
play flute instead
DUDE! You just helped me play the F chord! Thank you! Thank YOU!
i don't know if i suck or my guitar sucks
segheir hicham The guitar is only as good as the player
The guitar could very well suck. I was having a lot of trouble until I finally noticed that the action was way too high on my guitar. In other words, the strings were far too high over the frets, making it too much of an effort to hold them down. After watching some videos on how to do it right, I took out the bridge and sanded it down to where it should be. So much easier to play after that! Most new guitars have the action higher than it should be and it has to be taken down, by you or somebody who knows how to do it.
Same……
Buy a guitar with low strings, that would help a lot to most beginners. The high strings will double the pain in your fingers and it really gives struggles in pressing the strings.
You suck
When I first learned, I noticed that for the bar chord, I found it easier the put down my fingers first and then the bar.
I was dreading this chord but honestly after about 20 minutes I've nearly got it consistent!
It's easier then I thought it would be I think the D chord was the hardest for me I still struggle occasionally with D
Whew, nice to know it's a tough one for everyone else. I was starting to feel a bit self conscious there for a minute, lol.
*sees bar :0*
*has idea*
*gets out capo >:D*
ME
Thank you! After a whole 20 minutes of learning this chord, I now consider myself as master guitar player. so I'll be going on tour next week. Stay tuned!
How was the tour?
m terrible
1 month in Justin - 15 mins a day - will be trying this tonight for the first time - I wondered why the F wasn't in any of my 'beginner' books at the start - mr. plod but loving the routine!
Hey justin im 25 years old. I have been wanting to play the guitar for years. i never found videos to explain it right. Now i have found you and the way you explain everything makes it so simple. i have been practising with your videos 2 weeks now and im loving it. than you very much for the videos. my progress is fast thanks to you.
the 1 reason why guitar makes people quit
I was struggling to get this chord correct really fast for sooooo long.
Just watched your video for 2 min and now it works perfectly every single time xD
Thanks a lot mate!! Appreciate it
The f chord is satan in guitar string form
+suga kookie hey yoongi
lol fr but which chord would you call Jesus?
God doesn't exist, neither Satan.
@@anushka5912 c7 I guess lmao
@@donquixote2023 correction: you don't believe that they exist
I am a beginner Justin on the guitar. just 6 months in now. and finally found a easier way to play the F chord that works for me. Someone told me to practice my A , E , and A minor changes with the middle, ring and pinkie fingers for a week or so and it is a lot easier for me now. thanks for the video
After two years of playing the f chord while not playing the high e string at all, and wrapping my thumb around to play the low e string, yesterday I had an epiphany and covered the high e, the b and the g strings with a small barre chord with my index finger. Much easier! This is not the recommended way, but it works for me. So, I'm basically unteachable.
sad asian with short finger..... ㅠㅠ
Same here
@Megos Hong IME open F more than barre F is the challenge for endomorphic builds with shorter arms, small hands and shorter fingers which concidentally tend to be both less bony or flexible.

Sameee

my pinky cannot reach it :(((
the struggle is real.. and mutual.
Once mine reaches it, it's just freeze there and hardly to get to it's normal shape :/
i love your name
Hannah Etter mine?
+Panic! At The Veil With Twenty One Sirens your username 👌
The f chord almost broke my fingers
Young Justin coming thru in the clutch
this is the best lession of a teacher showing the F chord ive ever seen....great job my friend!!
I found that the reason i had trouble with the F chord was because i muted the B string with my middlefinger and after i discovered that it was alot easier. Always thought it was the bar i had trouble with, maybe this can help others too.
How did you prevent that? I have the same problem
@@dee8163 - curl your fingers more
I do the same in the video in the first fret but the E is somehow muted idk why. Already checked
I just started playing and didn't know that everyone struggles with the f-chord. Many tears were shed because I thought I was just full out shit.
ukulele f chord was easier than this
ikr lol
After giving the guitar a try, I feel pretty damn proficient on my uke.
how was the ukulele e chord? i've lost all hope now
AGREE
Achuthan B oh that chord is easy
I love the sound of this chord and I'll try giving it a while practicing. This was helpful; neat that there's three ways to practice. Thank you God bless
struggled with this chord for a year and watched this and it is ringing clear as a bell...omg thank you
i've been playing guitar for more than a year now but i only play songs without f chord lmao f is totally ban from my guitar
*banned
+Juan Perez yeah..but im trying to learn it now since there are a lot of beautiful songs to play that has an f chord lol
+Merzie Marie Joy Gemoya Keep practicing, it's not even that hard
+Joshua M. im practising it right now. well...yeah you are right. its not that hard but im having a hard time with the transition..
Merzie Marie Joy Gemoya I understand, I found it incredibly annoying at first, but the more you keep forcing yourself to play it, you'll eventually just get it
my fingers are to small for this chord!!
+Ilan cohn sameeee omg
Mine to but now I have to get it. Cause it will bother me till eternity.
same...
i have small girly hands and i managed to do it. if toni lommi who chopped of the top of his fingers and django reinhard who had 3 crippled fingers on his fretting hand can manage to play the guitar and even become very prolific players then you can manage to play barre chords and play the guitar too. and if you dont feel like playing barre chords right now there are a lot of songs that dont require learning them. but you can still do it. try lighter strings and lower your string action.
i will also quote this comment from a different video:
"I work in a guitar shop and one day a guy was in the acoustic guitar room doing a great rendition of Foo Fighters Everlong.
People are awesome!"
P.M.A
positive mental attitude.
guitarist with smaller hands and shorter fingers are not rare at all. so just keep at it. there are even lists with small handed players on the net if you are curious.
You start to appreciate music more when you try recreating it yourself...
So very true
Amen !
Who is WATCHING IT IN 2020 ?
👇👍
bro im just tryna learn guitar stfu
I'm sticking to the 3rd baby one for now, but I'm really struggling to get the F on the high E string with my pinkie. It just won't bend to hit it... :(
I'm confused your pinky should never hit the F on the E string for this cord. for an F your index finger/ first finger should be on the E/B/E strings on the first fret, middle/2nd finger on the G string 2nd fret, ring finger on the A string 3rd fret, pinky/4th finger D string 3rd fret.
It's the F-ail chord for a reason this chord make me quit learning and just stick with piano
How long you tried learning it before stopping?
Struggled for ages with this one, practicing and practicing, figured I'd just have to avoid songs with the F chord (the expletives write themselves, hey?) until one day I found a song I liked (Pirate's Life of all things of course) and it required a capo on 5. For whatever reason, something in my fingers and head clicked and I was able to do it.
Keep practicing everyone!
And thank you, Justin. You were my first teacher and I've learned a lot from you. Still have a ways to go on my journey and many many other rite of passages to clear.
Thank you for the great instruction. You broke it down so well. I feel like I crossed a huge barrier to getting better in my guitar journey.
I can't even play the easiest way of playing the F chord when I'm actually playing it in a song. Like I have such a difficult time holding both the first two strings with my index finger. It's so frustrating.
my strings have buzzed more than war veteran's ears from Vietnam
I got it in 45 minutes, no joke.
me too, I don't think it's that difficult
Surprisingly, I got it in 10 minutes... I was reading your comment a while ago
Ya its very easy
maybe because you have long fingers?
You Infuriate me
Young man you have a talent to talk people through this like you have.
My hands are too small to reach.... ISKDSKSXCND
I can play the F chord...... It just takes me 5 minutes to get it right. LOL!
+Juan Perez this, pls answer lmao
How's it going now?
ANSWERR!!
pretty tough, but not impossible at all, actually pretty easy i got it in 5 minutes, the trick is that the finger has to be over all of the strings, ( bad english sorry ) what i mean is it has to cover all the strings and be even FURTHER, and not end on the same line as the thickest string, actually pretty easy when u know that, but damn its hard to switch chords with that :D
MY FINGERS ARENT LONG ENOUGH GAHHH
Lexie Taylor me too , f is difficult chord , i have learn. unfortunately , my finger is short.
Thank you, the fingers just above the fret board was really good advice and helped out massively
Just made my first F Bar chord... and now my right hand is cramping. Worth it.
I can't play F ):( its not even funny any more
Did you get it yet?
What! Here I am, almost a year later from my last comment. I can play it fine, but not in an actual song. My procrastination has gotten the best of me. Begin working on this chord early on ladies and gents. F = Frustration. That's all I can describe this journey as.
So that's an F chord. I was wondering this whole time what kind of chord i was playing....
+acer8123
:D Exactly what I was thinking :D, but when you start playing with other people it starts to get relevant to know the names XD
Today is my first day of playing guitar and started with All Too Well . Thanks to your lessons that showing alternative ways to play F chord.
Thank you this really helped me, I was trying to use the flat of my finger and you just fixed that. Really appreciate it!
Thank you so much! I did the f bar chord on my second try.
Thank god that this guy exists. Really!
Probably! That's great.
It's like I play the piano so I can type quick on the keyboard.
My F is so bad. Glad your hands r strong
I love F chords, they're very good for heavy metal. Thanks a million Justin for the lesson
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!! tried for about an hour on this and gave up. Came back a month later, changed my hand positioning, and aced the bar chord! thx so much
Best guitar teacher in utube...
This man won my heart with the first sentence he said in this video.
Justin you always have been my first and best teacher here in RUclips. Thank you ♥️
Dusted down guitar haven't played years finding your lessons really helpful many thanks
old school F... this is the one for me!!!! Justin is the Don!
This video was actually very helpful! I’m trying to learn “Story of my Life” by One Direction and I’m not perfect at the F chord but I’ll just keep practicing and i know I’ll get better! I also used your video on the A minor chord to help me with this song I’m trying to learn as well! So thank you!!
Thanks Justin, this video makes me feel a lot better about my struggles with "F". I loved the way you presented the information, great video.
Im just starting out on guitar and that F chord is a mutha. Ive been learning Angie by the Rolling Stones which is where the F chord and I met. Playing open D tuning is beotch too. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks man. It had me bamboozled for months however thinking of it as an E is fantastic cause I use that same fingering on A and E when using a capo. I've made more progress in the last 5 minutes than I have in the last six months. I can't believe that never occurred to me, you're a legend!
Thought I was the only one having it hard with the f f cord watch the rest of them on RUclips but having you explain it far better makes me keep plugging at it great lesson
