- Surviving in the Wild for 5 Days with Zero Experience
I have dreamt of wilderness survival since I was a kid so I wanted to test if it was possible for an everyday man to do it. I did 0 preparation for this survival experience and naively thought I would thrive at it. I got the help of world-class survivalist Jordan Jonas (winner of Alone) and took to the North American wilderness to learn how to survive on my own for 48 hours.

⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

BEANS OUT!
Are you kidding me? You didn’t fail! I have chronic pain and have a hard time walking to the car sometimes. You did what so many couldn’t do, and you survived! Don’t be so hard on yourself. You rock!
Me too, I have psoriatic Arthritis!
@@Susan.I They diagnosed me with fibromyalgia because I tested negative for everything else but they think it could be PA because I have psoriasis. They said the tests don’t always show a positive when you have it. Also, I have a fused spine and the scar tissue from it has created major pain and spasms. I miss my body not being broken. 😂
Five days in the wilderness and under those temps - you lasted 119 & a half hours longer than the vast majority of the population would’ve… Way to go & congratulations Alex!
119 = 911 Awesome Alex. You are not a failure. Well done.
Your a Dad now. The risk too high. You showed leadership by doing what was right; not what was it easy. Focus on the next step. Not the whole staircase. You survived & learned valuable skills along the way. Well done you.
Dude! You killed it! I’ve been backpacking for a long time, and I always need to drop about 25lbs and hike or treadmill at least 3-5 miles per day for a few weeks to get into shape. You literally walked out of an RV and onto a serious trail with serious mileage AND you needed to find your own food? I’m pretty impressed!
For reals! I said the same thing!
wow Alex, just wow. Nice job!
Congrats Alex, you done good kid. You survived your backpacking, caught a fish. slept under the stars, and no critters ate you... I say that's a big win.
Those of us that live in the American west know how hard it is to survive without preparation. You are not a failure. You are doing great. It’s a brutal land out there.
As a former tent-camper/backpacker/semi-survivalist, I can attest that the situation you were in was not a "hard-but-fun youtube challenge" situation but an actual life or death type of situation. I was silently begging Jordan not to leave you on your own and of course he smartly stayed with you. There is absolutely no shame in this. What a valuable learning experience! Thank you for sharing this with so many others!!!
Wow, Alex. Many people wouldn't do anything close to what you did. I know I would have a hard time getting past my fear of predators in the wilderness. Years ago, I took part in a rappelling course for one day and rappelled down a 120-foot high vertical rock formation. It was an amazing experience, such adrenaline. I went back up to the top to rappel down again, because some of my classmates were doing that and I didn't want to feel left out. When I started near the edge, I was suddenly overcome with panic and froze. I decided not to go and backed up onto the rock. I was disappointed in myself, but the instructor said to me, "There is no reason to be disappointed. You made a rational decision in the face of fear." I realized my second attempt was all about me being competitive, instead of letting myself feel great about my first rappel down. That was back in 1989 and I never forgot it. Making a rational decision in the face of fear/exhaustion/hunger, etc., rather than trying to fulfill a fantasy, is an accomplishment. So, you didn't do 48 hours completely alone in the wilderness, but you learned more about yourself, your limits, when it's appropriate to push past your limits, and when it is not. Valuable lessons!
Failure is only when you fail to try. You may not have achieved everything you set out to do, but you survived and in the middle of it all, you had another adventure you'll remember FOREVER! Well done my friend!
To not try is failure. In our hearts , you have succeeded in so many ways. You got out of your comfort zone and realized what you're capable of doing. You're a stronger person for it.
Well-done mate ! 👍👍👍Sending much respect for you and Emma for what you have accomplished . Harriet, Jim and Yuki
I’m so relieved that you ultimately realized you DID SUCCEED!!
You hunted and gathered-you found nourishment!
You started a fire under damp conditions AND not by using a 9:00 lighter! You used friction, sparks and tender tinder.
You hiked during in tense heat. Sometimes just walking to my car is unbearable and energy sapping.(I live in Texas)
And you did it all with a smile on your face…a few down trodden moments but you pushed forward. You never gave up!!
Congratulations!! YOU DID IT!! YOU DID IT!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Without experience you took on such a huge task, so should in no way be disappointed with yourself. We never lose - we either win or learn! I myself, am an English expat living in soaring heat, so commend your efforts immensely, as most of us are just not made for those climates. The main thing here is that you not only survived, but made lifelong memories that will stay with you forever and created some fantastic content for us all. These experiences make us appreciate life and the things we sometimes take for granted. Enjoy the rest of your adventure with your amazing family and we all look forward to your future uploads. Peace out buddy ;-)
Alex, I think you were amazing! It’s not a failure. It’s a growing learning experience. The next time you do it, it’ll be even better. Just the beginning as you said. Best to Emma and Noah. Those wonderful llamas
I think most people who don't live in the mountains, including sea-level-dwelling Brits, have no real understanding of how both the altitude of the Rockies and the closer proximity to the sun can negatively affect them. Acclimatization, proper fitness, and well-ventilated sun-protecting clothing are vital. But, good effort, Alex, and welcome to the Rockies.
So many of the contestants on the show alone went home because they couldn't catch fish . They were people with extensive survivalist training.
There were also many warnings at that time about hiking in that heat , and you did so well .
You have the heart of an adventurer as does Emma. I know there will be many more adventures to come . On this trip you got to experience some amazing things , mostly don't wonder too far from a food source 😂. Seriously though well done !
You did not fail. Failure is never attempting your dream. You are amazing and don't you ever forget that.
Alex you fail at 100% of the things you DON’T try. You did not fail this. You 100% SUCCEEDED! I’m so stinking proud of you!
You're too hard on yourself Alex........this was a monumental task that you've never undertaken before, during a heatwave. Give yourself some Grace. You did a great job with the things you did accomplish. Well done!
Thanks so much, really appreciate the kind words. I definitely have even more respect for people, like Jordan, who are skilled enough to survive in the wilderness like this. It’s very inspiring.
It definitely won’t be my last attempt
Still very impressive! If you were able to do this much in the middle of summer, imagine what you could accomplish in some more reasonable weather! Hope we see more challenges like this on the channel.
I got emotional at the end when you talked about becoming your childhood hero. What an awesome dream. But what you accomplished here over these several days is badass and impressive. Heat + physical exhaustion + lack of food is BRUTAL on the body. I can’t imagine how difficult this was, and you did it!
You ARE a survivor, you didn’t let your ego get in the way, under difficult circumstances you made a smart decision .👍👏
I once hiked 9 miles round-trip in Glacier National Park with my (ex)husband and 2 1/2 year old son, while 5 1/2 months pregnant. It doesn't sound like much, but it was the hardest hike for me and not much of a view at the end, but I did it and survived! No hike is a failure because you are out there trying! Great job, Alex!
wow! That sounds very difficult! Nice job. We used to have a house near Glacier- so beautiful
You definitely did not “fail”! You not only had an active dialogue with your childhood dream; you actually took steps to experience an adulthood version of it! For a reality check, you were experiencing unusually extreme heat for Colorado plus altitude (which coming from the UK, even if you’ve been in Colorado for a few weeks, would be challenging)! I’ve been hiking for years on a weekly basis at 8000-12000 ft, and what you accomplished in 4 days would be difficult for me!
It's not always about "winning" ... it's about making the effort, and that's what you did. Good job, Alex, and Congrats on making your dream come true!
Some rubbish..its about succeeding and he didn't. He might in the future. Stop with the nauseating toxic positivity
Oh Alex, you did not fail! You did something the vast majority of us couldn’t do. Noah and Emma are going to be so proud of you!
You seriously didn't fail! The fact that you made it with all that hiking is a real accomplishment. You should feel good without any shade of self-doubt or failure. We can't become our ideals overnight. It's about developing skills over time and building on each success.
Don’t you dare think you failed! What you achieved was amazing! You should be so proud of yourself !
Ah thanks Eddie
Jordan is a beast! I watched him on Alone! You my friend did great! And in no way a failure, you made it the whole way starving ,tired ,hot and all with no experience! That is a win !
Wow - some really good production, around music choices and synchronisation to align with the video... not something I normally look for in Travel Beans (that's normally about heart tugging sincerity, authenticity and connecting). But genuinely, I noticed some of the tech stuff was really good this time.. well done Alex
..oh and well done for going for it. As you said yourself, you did more than many and ended up smiling and realising what you did achieve.
...and that's a Dad Noah will be soooo proud of.
What an epic video from the channel! While I would never subject myself to such an ordeal, I can appreciate the effort and appreciate the message of humility in nature. Hope to see more fishing on the channel as you continue traveling the US. 👍
Not a failure. What you experienced was a tremendous amount of growth on so many levels, something I couldn’t have done! You are to be admired. 🙏🏼💗
I simply don’t understand why you think you failed. You tried until you couldn’t try any more. That’s an absolute success.
So well done Alex what an awesome achievement! Emma and Noah will be immensely proud!!
It’s all about surviving the trip and you did that. You should be proud.
Thanks Dennis
Congratulations to you Alex for taking your first step in a fulfilling journey. You are already ahead of so many who still haven't got themselves off the couch! What a great opportunity to learn wilderness skills from one of the best, Jordan is a great guide.
Congratulations Alex, you have achieved more than millions of us wouldn't even attempt to.
I would have quit the first day. Completing the hike is an accomplishment in and of itself. And you went in with zero training, learning on the go. While I understand feeling the way you do, I'm so impressed with what you did and now you've had a bit of the experience, you can prep for the next trek!
Don’t look at what you felt that you didn’t achieve but look at what you did achieve. You did absolutely amazing. I have chronic pain so I know that there is only so far that you can push your body. You know when it’s time to say “I tried it”, “I did it” and “I learnt so much but it’s now time to stop”. You wouldn’t want to push so hard that you end up injuring yourself or are unable to enjoy the rest of your holiday and travels. You should be extremely proud of what you did and how far you got. At the end of the day you have a family that needs you and they need you in one piece and healthy. Well done you 🥰❤️x
Congratulations for lasting through. I would never sleep like you did in a sleeping bag in Bear Country. Brilliant vlog. Emma and I mean Emma, not the Lama must be proud of you.
This was a success! Alex you took the first step, learned, experienced and survived! Great job!!!! ~Cara ❤
Wow, Alex, what was a journey that was! To be clear, that's what it's all about, the journey, not the winning or even losing. To complete the task through that ridiculous terrain and excruciating temperatures is enough man. You are the winner to have done that.
I'm a backpacker and spend a lot of time in various wilderness-type places. But you had it tough. I normally carry my food not catch it. And I once walked 15 miles in 95F heat and it is tough. And while berries are a nice snack, they aren't a meal. So I think you did OK. And catching fish is always hit or miss, even with proper fishing gear, let alone your makeshift kit. In fact, I usually have more success tickling them than hooking them!
Alex. You did so well considering you had no training or preparation and it was so hot!.. walking 10 miles a day through that terrain with enough water and food is tough. But dehydrated and hungry and with those temperatures is another level of hard! well done😊.
You're nowhere near being a failure at all! There's no way I'd be willing to try what you've achievement, 5 days in the wilderness, surviving on very little food and in extreme heat. Well done mate!! 👏👏
Youre brave to even try it. It isnt failure . Youre are a experience richer . You should be very proud of yourself.
You did more than survive!!! You accomplished what you started out to do, don’t be so hard on yourself…. Well done.
That was incredible! Next level stuff. Loved the music. Congrats on surviving!
No way you failed Alex, you did it for all us dads and guys out there who would dream of doing this. YOU DID IT! Well done fella.
Back when you were doing the Van build I gave you crap on how little you did. I want to take all of that back.
What you did was amazing. I don't know if I could do that huge hike fully geared up. To do it while foraging and fishing was so impressive.
This is definitely one of my favorites from you... Great job Alex 🎊🎉
I didn't see a failure there. I saw someone with no experience or training surviving in that heat for 5 days. The experience you have gained will hold you in good stead. Well done Alex, be proud of yourself.
Alex you should be very proud of your achievement, never doubt yourself 👍👍🥰
Alex, you never fail when you learn.
Love this 👍 thank you
Alex!!! So damn proud of you! ❤ please don’t beat yourself up, you did an amazing thing. Bravo!
Alex you are far from a failure. Your 1st time doing this I think you deserve a big 👏👏👏 that's a lot to do in the extreme heat that everyone has been under. So great job on all your hard work and dedication to Jordan but most of all to yourself! Maybe one day Noah will be a great adventurous and you can do a father son retreat. God Bless 🙌 🙏 ❤️
You did it, Alex! In the midst of a massive heat wave and you didn’t give up! So proud of you! You did great.
I don’t see that you failed. You did survive in the wild while walking a lot of miles every day. If you were just trying to survive, you wouldn’t necessarily be doing all that walking. You’d probably be looking for more food sources or shelter. You were awesome! 😎
Yeah true, all the walking definitely made the other tasks much harder! 😅 Thanks
Great job Alex!! You crushed that adventure!!
That looked like a win to me. You challenged yourself and made it back alive. Great job!! Be proud of this accomplishment!!👍🏻
Alex, you in no way failed. I think you did amazing! You made it to the end goal. For me right now, the thought even walking a mile or two is overwhelming. You did 30+ miles in that heat. You did great!
You didn't fail, you excelled, you did survive an epic hike in the heat, the terrain you didnt have a map, you did awesome work.
Heads up, wet your hat, your shirt, when you need to cool down
Keep learning the first trip you take your son out will be the best trip you ever do.
You survived!! Be happy about that!!
😂 I am definitely happy about that!
Don’t dwell on what you DIDN’T achieve….be proud about what you DID achieve….well done….it sometimes takes more courage to give up than to go on. The heat was probably the deciding factor in this adventure so PLEASE don’t feel you have failed…Noah will still see his daddy as a hero,,
Oh my gosh!! You are amazing Alex! Noah will be so proud of you when he is old enough to watch this video! What adventures you will have with him!! Love you guys and your videos! ♥
You did AMAZING. Don’t ever doubt yourself. You should be proud of what you just accomplished!
You didn’t fail. Just hiking in those mountains is tough let along the surviving. You did a great job!
Just the fact that you tried something so difficult is a huge win, and you didn’t give up! You also learned a lot, always a good thing in life.
Loved this Alex, well done! throwing yourself out of your comfort zone and doing as well as you did! again, well done!
I really enjoyed this video. I hope you're doing well, and Emma and Noah of course. Very introspective, very, real, very touching. Took guts I'm sure.
Hell of an effort there Alex. Not only would I not have succeeded, I know I could not even attempt it. Phenomenal effort.
This is definitely not a fail! And no, this is no polite civil talk. You are my hero!
Stop being such a Brit and please pat yourself on the back for all those amazing things you achieved: you went out of your comfort zone, as an unprepared man, managed to start a fire full of stuff with dew on it, caught a big fish with primitive tools (even though it escaped in the end), trekked for miles up and donwhills under a scorching heat, you have learned a ton of surviving skills and tricks, you connected with your inner child, you persevered even though being underfed and with no calories enough to have energy.
Dear Alex, this is clearly not a failure, this is a win and a learning curve and full of meaningful experiences you will be able to remember for the future and even teach to your son some day. It is a clear win, as you proved yourself, you are definitely able to put yourself out of a comfort zone, just to try and experiment, and are able to learn.
I am proud of you for taking the risk, & you did well. You walked in the extreme heat & miles. I know your family is so proud!
Great job Alex! I didnt see any failure. I saw a man complete the mission he wanted.
Ah thanks
Well done Alex for giving it a go, you are amazing to even try. Noah would be proud of you. Cheers from Australia
You did not fail! You completed your hike and learnt a lot about survival. It would have been much easier without the heatwave. Congrats on your success!
You did it for 5 days that is my books is a win ❤ 😊 see you next week
Thanks
Amazing work Alex, you did it, well done. What a tale to tell Noah.
I love the commentary and the insight into what you’re thinking. Hope there are more little gems like this!
I think you did awesome. You made it to the airstrip and you didn’t pass out from the heat. So you ate berries and not fish. What a cool experience
Bloody Brilliant Video! Felt every moment of it. Good on you Alex for challenging yourself and sharing the experience.
Failed!! No way, man! You have done better than most people. YOU CAUGHT FISH!!! I'm quiet impressed, Alex. You go, man!!!
Actually you succeeded at doing your best at doing something constructive you'd set yourself, unprepared for what it really required. Don't pay yourself out for not doing something harder than your current preparation. You did something amazing ! Well done
Well done Alex! You did not fail. You survived! That is the ultimate win!
Hiking in that kind of heat is brutal. A lack of food and water would make it almost impossible. You did a great job!
You undertook a challenging adventure with limited experience. It takes time to be competent and endurance experiences like you did are often a mixture of negative and positive emotions. I bet after at all you feel proud and have a great sense of achievement 💪
Alex, you did a lot more than a lot of people, be proud of yourself.
Thank you 🙏
In my dreams, this would be my ideal. However, I recognise just how difficult such an endeavour is. You did amazingly given this as your first experience.
Great work Alex. You’re making the best of you trip to America. 😊
You hiked for 4 days in ridiculous heat! You made fire! You survived a heat wave! You caught a fish! (Albeit it got away) You might not be little Alex's hero but you're definitely a wilderness hero in my mind!
This is a great video. You did amazing, Alex. Many couldn't and wouldn't do what you've attempted and achieved here. Be proud of yourself!
Way to go Bear Bean! Keep going out and you will continue to learn.
Thank you! Yes! That’s the plan!
Jordan, how can you call yourself a failure??? You did it! You survived the heat and the wild terrain! I could not have done what you just did. Please don’t think of it as a fail. It was a first step toward your childhood dreams. Give yourself a big hug!!
Great job Alex! What matters is that you tried...success!!! 💪🏻👍🏻
I’m sorry you “ felt” failure because of your expectations but you certainly did not fail!! I’m impressed! This is only the beginning!!
You can’t yell when catching a fish- scares them away but!!!!… you did awesome! What an amazing feat! You did it!!! Not a failure. You did what you did
Well done! That was a monumental task and you rocked it!
You did not fail!!!
Look at what you did!!!
I wouldn't do that, even when I was young!
On the other hand:
I LOVE spending a week or two in "THE BOUNDARY WATERS" in northern Minnesota!
I enter near Ely, MN!
When Noah is old enough, I know you, as a family, you will spend time in "THE BOUNDARY WATERS"! Until then, you can do this alone for a couple days ... Or, invite Jordan Jonas and go for a week! So much fun! Not as dangerous as this trip.
CONGRATULATIONS on an adventure well done!
Well done Alex and to make a good film in the process is even more of an achievement !
You are still alive... You didn't fail. I love spending alone time in our national forests. I will go backpacking for a week and the best part is coming home. When you return to civilization, you don't take for granted the comforts we are blessed with. Kara and Nate call it a reset.
Massive kudos. And total respect. Great effort and well done 👏
Magnificent landscapes you were in! This is why your channel is one of the best travel channels on youTube
