i can understand the smashed bottle of booze at the back of the bench, having disassembled and reassembled my box twice due to no 4th gear; very useful reference video none the less.

If you see closely it a bottle of bourbon that is $2099 a bottle. sad story i busted the bottom of it. pricy night. I am glad you liked the video.

The drive sprocket should be done to around 70 ft lb. A 52mm box spanner (Land Rover Axle size cheap on ebay) works a treat along with a chain whip to hols the gear. Simple. Always use a new lock nut on reassembly.

Hi,i have a 1956 matchless g3ls.A common problem is the kickstart jamming,i didn't know you had to rock it in gear,or pull clutch in to make the kickstart free!
This resulted in me forcing my whole bodyweight down on the kickstart and my foot 'felt' something bend that felt it 'shouldn't' be bending! :-/
Since then it kicked over once and now the gear shaft is locked!!
All kickstart mech is new now, quadrant, gear pinion etc since this happened.
Gears select fine, have you any idea what could cause the gearshaft/layshaft? To lock??
I just want to know anything i can look for before i take the gearbox off? It's a Burman 52 box, thanks.

So you have to remove the main shaft to change the gearbox sprocket? What a pain! Do you know if this can be done without disassembling the whole thing?

    • @Vintage-Cycle

the sprocket can be replaced, main shaft stay in place, just have to undo the big nut and replace the sprocket.

@@Vintage-Cycle No you cant get the nut off past the step on the mainshaft, it needs to be removed first. You have the box in your hands and still give the wrong information.
