Queer woman here, speaking only on my own behalf, not the entire community but I feel that it's perfectly OK to have straight actors play queer roles (as long as they are careful not to be offensive in their portrayal). Kit Connor's forced outing is a good example of how this well meant sentiment can really harm queer people: he wasn't a straight person "stealing" a queer role, he just wasn't out (yet). But also, if you think it through would that mean that queer people can *only* play queer roles? (That would severely limit their careers) Or would they get to play a different orientation while straight people aren't allowed to do so? I personally long for a society where nobody has to declare their orientation at all if they don't feel like it...

Bisexual non-binary person here. Here's my two cents: Sexuality, you can act regardless of your sexuality because Love is Love. It's just love. It isn't rocket science. Trans characters should mostly be played by trans actors. I say mostly because I would be fine with a cis woman or cis man portraying me. That said, I doubt MTF/FTM trans people would think any ol'e cis or non-binary actor could pull off. There is nuance and a life experience that is totally different and requires someone who has walked that walk before. About the same reasons I would have only deaf actors play deaf roles.
That being said as well, I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on trans actors playing cis roles? I saw an amazing production of this play by Sanaz Toosi, and the best character in my opinion was a trans woman, playing an older, sweet, and somewhat conservative cis woman. She nailed it. I could barely hold back my tears when her story was concluded. I even saw another production a few months later, and I wasn’t nearly as impressed with the cis actress who played the character. I would personally love to see more instances like that, but I know there will be some who cry “double standards” And maybe there’s another point of view I’m missing.
Side note: you can tell that every CW show is written the same way because they did the same thing with Supergirl in breaking up the lesbian couple and then spent the rest of the series making the lesbian main character a living disaster, because obviously the writers think that all lesbians have unstable, unhealthy love lives. It's fake progressivism. They want to get points but then they want to avoid getting attacked by bigots so they decide to only portray lgbtq relationships as being messes. It's very tiring.
Also I'm tired of shows only portraying femme(ish) lesbian relationships. It's like, let's make it progressive but still palatable for the straights. Let's not show butch femme or guy - guy ever

To be fair, I will give CW's TVDU a pass. It doesn't matter if a relationship is gay or not to be toxic, and Legacies especially has improved in its LGBT representation with the two main LGBT characters also being played by a pansexual actress and a ally who wanted to turn his character bisexual for representation out of love for his gay uncle in the final season.

1:07:45 if there’s one even mildly nice thing you can say about Netflix and HBO Max constantly canceling shows, you don’t have to worry about seasonal rot
Marisol saw the future this show was going to take and was desperately trying to end the world to protect the innocent viewers. But you can rely on Charmed to not care about the suffering of innocents.
It could be maybe but not with a Latina mother. That plays into the stereotype that Latina women are hypersexual aka “the spicy Latina” Even white women would be judged for having three kids of similarish ages with 3 different men. So yeah no not a good idea for this show
That bit about casually defeating the 3 major baddies is the true essence of Charmed. Too many of the original shows had the sisters fight, make up at the end, say "wait, wasn't there a demon?". They'd make a quick potion and chuck it as the demon busts through their door.
So, in defense of the show, Stoplight parties are an actual thing. The people in red are mostly there to serve drinks, make sure no one is getting drugged, get rides for people who can't drive, DJs/drag queens/performers of some kind who are just there to work, ace/aro people or anyone else who just wants to dance and hang out with people. It's actually a pretty nice way to make sure you're only hitting on people actually open to being hit on and not being a creep by accident. Granted, I'm in my 30's and have only done this with other queer people who have kind of grown out of being a horndog college student so this kind of party being successful likely has something to do with that.
@@AllisonPregler i am sorry but the original charmed also had representation and a good one It was natural and didn’t feel forced at all But when you reboot a show or a movie just for the specific purpose of changing race or ethnicities of the main characters That means simply you ran out of ideas
I love that not only did Alastor give himself a demon name, but his organization, Morningstar, is also just plain what "Lucifer" means. Congratulations on this incredible video! You were the true Car Man and Charmed itself was the true Margoyle all along.
there are parts of this season i genuinely liked - the manic pixie dream girl episode and the silly glee episode especially - but i think my favorite was the medusa episode, which i think was their strongest (monster of the week) episode of the season (and therefore the show on the whole, probably lol). something you didn't explicitly mention that i also really liked was that macy was a virgin. you really don't see a ton of older people who haven't had sex on tv so i thought it was interesting and added to macy's character (and also was a fun resolution to the issue of obtaining "virgin blood"). this is of course pretty quickly done away with and doesn't get mentioned again, but, you know. i liked what we had with it. lovely video! unfortunete we have season two to look forward to!
I think it’s nuts that the Medusa episode is considered the best of S1 and probably the entire show but the writer of that episode was let go at the end of the season. Charmed’s production choices were… choices… I didn’t get past the pilot but I kept up via “CHWAV” and followed the writer on the tweeter back in the day.
I as a woman of colour am sick of the idea that because a program doesn't tick all the representation boxes I won't enjoy it. Also the assumption that by ticking all the boxes a program will instantly be worthy of praise. Stories are a way for people to see the world through someone else's eyes (fictional characters included) I love anime and Korean ghost stories and yet have never felt disgusted because I am not represented in some of my favourite shows. What is more important is opening the industry up to different producers and creating new stories with different ideas and viewpoints. Stop rebooting other peoples shit and create something new if you are offended by the 'whiteness of it. As more diverse film makers and their work is seen, the realisation that people of colour and LGBTQIA can also make duds shouldn't have people screaming oppression. At the end of the day we are all human and make good and poor choices. This program is just MEH at best and that comes down to the writing.
Exactly. Most of us are sick of it. Only the fully brainwashed like this nonsense. Oh we're tolerant and inclusive....they say as they proceed to attack white people, straight people, men and everyone else that doesn't fit into their new world view. They're so oppressive yet scream about oppression. Makes no sense, but cults never do make sense.
I know this is 5 months later, but I really like this comment. I probably wouldn't put it half as concisely as I tried. Like, my cultural heritage is "Eastern European Jew." The closest I've ever related to characters on a level of cultural baggage is a very mild connection to some other stories about American immigrants, often ones from somewhat similar cultures (poor and family-centric) but very different ethnicity (mostly Hispanic, when it comes to modern American immigrant stories). Just as a statistical inevitability from watching anime, reading manga and visual novels, etc, most of the characters I've strongly admired or identified with are going to be like 13-25 year old Japanese girls. A lot of my favorite stories are centered on LGBT romance and pretend straight cis couples under 20 don't exist, others just focus on a single central straight relationship without any need to tuck in peripheral gay characters to check boxes. Sometimes I do stop to appreciate in some stories I like "oh hey, it's cool how varied this cast is and yet it all feels so right, this probably wouldn't be a thing you'd see decades ago" and that's the limit of it. The stories that most compel me have nothing to do with whether there are characters who share my dark curly hair and have to buy equally heavy-duty hair brushes.
There were sooo many good ideas in this show, especially with regards to their powers, demons not being genetically evil, Macy's battle with her demonic side, Harry's chemistry with the girls, but somehow (studio meddling?) the story was stirred together with a clumsy, clunky stick and packed into far too short arun time. This needed so much room to breathe!
You don't *KNOW* how long I've waited for a Charmed Reboot review from you, Allison! I revist your OG Charmrd review vids time and again for a good laugh. You and Phellan are always on my notifications when a Charmed Rewind comes out. Thank you for all that you do! 😂 ❤
Think of the engagement and attention you can get just by saying political keywords in a questionable reboot! Cynical business decisions are definitely here, whether or not they actually intended to bait online discourse...
It's not even a very good performance, because a lot of the "take that, men!" quotes sound like how a sexist scriptwriter in the 90's would write a stock "obnoxious feminist" character, with slightly updated language.
The Return Of The Queen!!!!!!! Seriously your original reviews are some of my absolute favorite internet comfort reruns and I have actually been hoping for this since the reboot was announced.
The show gives the impression that it was ordered rather than crafted. Essentially, the network ordered the show, quickly assembled a writing team to create it, even though there was no plan for the storyline or mythos for something that was quickly ordered. This is probably why there is such a lack of direction in the narrative and writing, with no clear sense of purpose or destination. But that’s my take.
The scatterbrained approach to writing is a trend in basically all CW shows, weirdly. Very obvious lack of direction, sudden cast changes/introductions. Im not sure why but its a problem Ive seen in every one of them Ive seen with the exception of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It makes me wonder what the networks like behind the scenes.
The line "Kame-hame hoo ha" took me OUT. I have been crying laughing for like 10 minutes over it. Thanks for another great Charmed vid Allison. They are such a comfort watch for me Lol
so many concepts sound SO incredibly interesting, but then I remember the words that come out of these characters' mouths and I go "hm maybe not" anyway 10/10 video, took me all of yesterday to finish, will take all of another day to watch again
I'll say this about the reboot: -they did better with the lore sometimes -they had better acting sometimes -Seasons 1 & 4 were their best seasons -Macy Vaughn, like Prue, was the best Charmed One out of the Four -The Elders were dicks and died for it -Abigail Cain and the showrunners for Seasons 2 & 3 ruined the show and took it away from where it shouldve been -The transition from Macy to Kaela during S4 was really well done and super creative -I CAN NOT BELIEVE PHOEBE HALLIWELL RECREATED BLOCKBUSTER Allison, i love your work and i love the reboot, so i cant wait for the next three season reviews.
I watched a few episodes and enjoyed them, until I reached the episode where Mel erased Niko’s memory (or changed the timeline?) to make her forget about them being witches, while the latter was basically crying and begging her not to. That felt kind of disturbing to me at the time with regard to things like consent and healthy relationships and so forth. When you’re the heroes, you are supposed to bravely stand up to the people telling you to erase your girlfriend’s memories, not just go along with it. At the time, I thought it was just a cheap way to extend the secret identity relationship drama over more episodes, but then they apparently never ended up getting back together, which feels even worse somehow!
Yuuuuus! You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this, lmao. I haven’t even watched the new Charmed, I just know your reaction/review/analysis will be superb and thoroughly amusing. What a nice way to end the evening! 😄 By the way, thank you for all of the time and effort you put in. It’s very much appreciated! I’m sure that the Charmed is a Mess series has taken up far more time and energy than you would’ve initially liked to allocate to Charmed, hahah.
The book looked sooo ugly. The original show one of the best things about it show was the "charming" and gothic aesthetic of the house and especially the book! Why make the book look so unappealing.
@manegirl93416 well I think it's trying to emulate the apparition effect from the Harry Potter movies though it's been awhile since I saw the movies so it might not be as similar as I remember it.
That last episode should have been a whole season. That could have been really cool to have Source!Macy constantly making bad reboots and then trying to fix things over and over... But with actual time to breathe for each instance (ala 1~2 episodes)... And have her arc be basically just one big mental/emotional breakdown that is the whole season that gets "fixed" in the finale via family... It could have been something.
The trustfund babies with crossobows having anti-magic ring that gets destroyed by magic could have been easily explained with: "Where did you get this shit? This is fake!"
What the HELL was going on behind the scenes on this show? This has all the hallmarks of a show where nobody knows what they're supposed to be making. It's like how Star Trek: Discovery went through multiple showrunners and wound up with all sorts of weird inconsistencies and shifting characterizations, only this is somehow more convoluted! Has anyone spilled the details on what was happening here or are they still waiting for NDAs to expire?
I've never been more excited about a show I've never had one iota of intention of watching (I... actually turned out to quite like the first two seasons of Baywatch once I'd binged Baywatching so many times over lockdown that i could recite every script in my sleep). In defense of holly during that live stream, it was only rose who made fun of the reboot. Holly was trying to be nice but rose was being her typical rude self
... of all the things I'm learning about in this, "White Lighters are called that because the original effect was a white glow" is probably the wildest to me, as a writer. They're people who died and were asked if they want to come back as immortal magic guardians for witches. They're literally stopped at the white light at the end of the tunnel and asked to leave it and take some of that energy with them- how could they NOT do something so simple and instead make it so... needlessly complex and weird??
I mean... I always thought "White Lighter" was an awful and awkward name for what were basically guardian angels. It's a unique name, sure, but it sounds very silly.
The writing on this seems so sloppy and bad. Allison is doing a great job summarizing this crazy story. I think a good name for this series should have been Charmed Rebootception.
It's funny that the same thing happened here as with Mindy Kaling's Velma - the show went down so hard on woke messages that it became a parody of liberal ideals, so much so that liberals accused it of being a parody of their ideals, when this was not the intention of either show. Btw, the "Who cares- not me!" sign is hilarious. Reminds me of the 20th century Fox logo joke (Nobody Cares)

Marisol saw the future this show was going to take and was desperately trying to end the world to protect the innocent viewers. But you can rely on Charmed to not care about the suffering of innocents.
Allison talking about a season of Charmed… just like old times, let the nostalgia come rushing back
Being siblings and family despite having different fathers would be a pretty good message, I think.
It could be maybe but not with a Latina mother. That plays into the stereotype that Latina women are hypersexual aka “the spicy Latina”
Even white women would be judged for having three kids of similarish ages with 3 different men. So yeah no not a good idea for this show
How is it a good idea atall ? Why would we want to promote broken homes and promiscuity?
@@Zelda00Gamereven white women? Why "even white women"? Everything is about race isn't it? Ffs.
@@Lee-kf9tqit’s not about promoting that but promoting that those borne into those situations are still capable of normal love with their family
That bit about casually defeating the 3 major baddies is the true essence of Charmed. Too many of the original shows had the sisters fight, make up at the end, say "wait, wasn't there a demon?". They'd make a quick potion and chuck it as the demon busts through their door.
your comment made me cry from laughing too hard for 10 minutes, because it's so true, thank you 💀💀💀
Bonkers that all happened in ONE SEASON. Talk about blowing your wad.
Great video, really untangled those threads.
Thanks for the insight!

i am sorry but the original charmed also had representation and a good one
It was natural and didn’t feel forced at all
But when you reboot a show or a movie just for the specific purpose of changing race or ethnicities of the main characters
That means simply you ran out of ideas
They only aired 2 seasons here, but I will watch them all some day because there were so many good/interesting nuggets between all the clumsiness.
I think it’s nuts that the Medusa episode is considered the best of S1 and probably the entire show but the writer of that episode was let go at the end of the season. Charmed’s production choices were… choices…
I didn’t get past the pilot but I kept up via “CHWAV” and followed the writer on the tweeter back in the day.
1:40:51 "WHO FORGOT TO GET THE ALMOND MILK?"
God, I missed the Evil Charmed Ones voiceovers lmao
Fun fact: Welsh rarebit is literally just cheese and mustard on toast 😂
Yes! I was so confused why the magazine (?) had a picture of a rabbit on it. Rarebit =/= rabbit. 🐇
Oh poor Allison, thinking they ever had good intentions. 🤣 The whole thing reeked of performative morality.
Oh yeah. It is one of the clearest examples of awkwardly shoving in hot button issues to deflect criticism.
Lucy is the president of my heart and the best character in the entirety of the reboot
I love the absolutely bizarre conglomeration of ideas that is Lucy. *absolutely deadpan and in absolutely the wrong tone for the vibe* "toot toot"
The Return Of The Queen!!!!!!!
Seriously your original reviews are some of my absolute favorite internet comfort reruns and I have actually been hoping for this since the reboot was announced.
Welcome back my fellow Charmanders.
As a fan of the original Charmed in its first 4 seasons, I love your reviews of the reboot and watched your whole podcast. I was waiting for this!
Centring your show around a prophecy involving your leads, then having to scramble when one of them leaves the show. Charmed, or Sleepy Hollow?
30:35 I keep hearing "skinny marks" and I half-expected the OSW guys to come in say "Yooooou skinny MARKS!" 😆
I'm dreading the moment when you'll explain how insane Abigail's character is...
The line "Kame-hame hoo ha" took me OUT. I have been crying laughing for like 10 minutes over it. Thanks for another great Charmed vid Allison. They are such a comfort watch for me Lol
so many concepts sound SO incredibly interesting, but then I remember the words that come out of these characters' mouths and I go "hm maybe not"
anyway 10/10 video, took me all of yesterday to finish, will take all of another day to watch again
Congratulations Allison, you probably just gained hundreds of die hard Charmed OG Fans as subscribers! 🤣🤣🤣
I commend you for rebooting and updating the iconic line:
"AND THE DAY WAS SAVED nehehehe" lol
I'll say this about the reboot:
-they did better with the lore sometimes
-they had better acting sometimes -Seasons 1 & 4 were their best seasons
-Macy Vaughn, like Prue, was the best Charmed One out of the Four
-The Elders were dicks and died for it
-Abigail Cain and the showrunners for Seasons 2 & 3 ruined the show and took it away from where it shouldve been
-The transition from Macy to Kaela during S4 was really well done and super creative
-I CAN NOT BELIEVE PHOEBE HALLIWELL RECREATED BLOCKBUSTER
Allison, i love your work and i love the reboot, so i cant wait for the next three season reviews.
Me at the same time as Allison " Elders are dicks!" 🤣🤣🤣
The Charmed reboot did give us that wonderful podcast with you and Phelous. I'm sure the CW keep the show going just for that alone.
The "super secret garden where people go to hide" is actually a pretty cool place to walk around in person!
Yuuuuus! You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this, lmao. I haven’t even watched the new Charmed, I just know your reaction/review/analysis will be superb and thoroughly amusing. What a nice way to end the evening! 😄
By the way, thank you for all of the time and effort you put in. It’s very much appreciated! I’m sure that the Charmed is a Mess series has taken up far more time and energy than you would’ve initially liked to allocate to Charmed, hahah.
Excited to see if the reboot is also weirdly antagonistic towards leprechauns
The book looked sooo ugly. The original show one of the best things about it show was the "charming" and gothic aesthetic of the house and especially the book! Why make the book look so unappealing.
Not gonna lie I kind of hate the new white lighter orbing effect.
Right?! Why go weird twisty body horror with it?! They already have a perfectly good pixie light effect, just recolor that or something!
@manegirl93416 well I think it's trying to emulate the apparition effect from the Harry Potter movies though it's been awhile since I saw the movies so it might not be as similar as I remember it.
Love that you gave the reboot sisters their own version of “and the day was saved 😆”
And noticeably less sinister
A 2+ hour breakdown of the Charmed-boot season 1? Time to get the skinny margs and Doritos, batches!
Finally, it's A Good Day to Charm Hard.
Justice for Fun Galvin
Fun Galvin > Cardboard Galvin
That last episode should have been a whole season.
That could have been really cool to have Source!Macy constantly making bad reboots and then trying to fix things over and over... But with actual time to breathe for each instance (ala 1~2 episodes)...
And have her arc be basically just one big mental/emotional breakdown that is the whole season that gets "fixed" in the finale via family...
It could have been something.
I wouldn't say a whole season but maybe two to four episodes.
Your TV retrospectives are some of the best on RUclips, i can't wait to see how bananas this show gets
Allison: *begins to introduce the Elders*
Me: wait for it....
Allison: "THE ELDERS ARE DICKS"
Me: *CHEERS*
WE’RE BACK BABY. SKINNY MARGS FOR ALL!
Not clicked a notification so quickly before. Time to stop what I’m doing and get a cuppa tea and enjoy this! Thanks Allison =]
"Hey, how about we make the characters likeable and world make sense this time?" ....... " "Naaaaah"
I've never been more excited about a show I've never had one iota of intention of watching (I... actually turned out to quite like the first two seasons of Baywatch once I'd binged Baywatching so many times over lockdown that i could recite every script in my sleep). Charmed is a Mess is back and everything's going to be OK.
Allison I've been following you since C****** A****** and it makes me very happy to still see you popping up on my youtube with new and improved videos. Honestly so impressive and inspiring
It'd be funny if Harry's "hysteria is antifeminist" comment was him being a troll.
Your series on the original Charmed show is still one of my favorite and funniest things ever, I am excited to jump back in!
Allison, thank you. Your videos are so funny, and the effort is spectacular. I’ve been watching your videos all throughout my 6 years of college, and it’s gotten me through a lot. Big fan here! - Scott
Hey thanks!
After a hard day at work, seeing the notification for Allison’s Charmed Reboot Retrospective made me smile. Thank you!
I really thought you'd do all of the show in one long video but seeing we are getting season by season. thank you so much Allison
Charmed 2018 is trying to show that they are more technologically advanced than 1998. The first thing they always point out is that they can text and the usage of Phones in the pilot, like cmon we get that you’re trying to show that Charmed OG was outdated but Charmed 2018 is like that episode in S2 of the OG charmed where they go to the future and everything relies on technology…
Can't wait to eventually find out how this show ended. I watched until you stopped the podcast. No way I could keep going on with it without that.
