I bought the Ford Escape plug in. Same as the Rav 4 in essence as Toyota and Ford work together on hybrid technology. I did a long trip in Eco Mode and switched in between modes to see the difference. Prince George to Terrace on the way there The car said 60kms left in miles left. On the way back the car said I had 178kms left in full eco mode using the save for later. Auto EV works. But what gave me the difference in fuel economy was coasting down the hills in neutral. Driving a lower speeds managed in some cases 3.7 liters per 100kms. I would not go crazy on plugging it in. On the trip I had a rest stop with a plug in and charged it full on the way there on the way back only had 10kms of charge. Sport mode recharged the battery the best on a downhill. Coasting in neutral doesn't use gas the engine is off in neutral. The quicker slow down leaving it in Gear wasn't worth it unless the speed can be maintained.

@carswithsonduren Thanks for your videos ;) How much mileage you are seeing in your NX350h? Currently, I see 6.4/100 in my car. I use Costco gas but some people raised concerns about it. Can you clarify? What's the normal mileage for NX 350h?

I have not heard that term "pulse and glide" since I owned my 2006 Prius. Back then that was a hack to get more mileage out of that car. I was able to get just over 3L /100km in the city back then. Another hack was driving behind really close to a tractor trailer in the highway to get that air effect and reduce drag. I do not suggest anyone do that because it is dangerous but it does work. Me and the wife went fully electric about 6 years now and we are never going back to gas mobiles. I wish Toyota will make a fully electric 4Runner one day, that would be amazing.
Ot using the right choice of English. Here in America we hybrid drivers call how to coasting. Coasting is exactly once you get to particular road max speed allowed you start coasting, i.e., very light or not at all keeping your right foot on the accelerator. This skills of how to coast, or alternative,y using the cruise control at less than the max speed allowed approximately will give you very similar outcome, depends on the distance travel on not busy highways. Using already two different brands full pre-owned hybrids with low mileage including Rx 450h AWD lately, I was more successful w/ fuel economy when using the cruise control at optimal speed (different for different hybrid vehicles) than using the “coasting” technique.
I agree completely with you, I have a Venza hybrid and only use this technique when it will not affect other drivers, traffic moves the best and most safely when everyone goes the same constant speed.
Hello, in my hybrid vehicle, from time to time the engine temperature is normal, when the air conditioner is not working and I am driving in the eco zone, it happens that it is not working only with the electric motor. What could be the reason? Have you encountered such a situation?
Only thing I can add is that the car knows when and when not to use the engine. It's annoying that the car doesn't run on electric only every time that you think it should, but the more you drive it, the more you learn how the car works.
If it is so helpful, one has to wonder why Toyota Engineers didn't incorporate Pulse & Glide into their control systems. Like Honda does. (Well, I know why they can't, but I'll get there.) Here's why P&G works, based on the engine in a third generation (I think) Prius. I choose it because I have the BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) map for it. BSFC is how many grams of fuel it takes to make one kWh of useful energy, as a function of RPM and the power generated. The demonstration is just an approximation. And it would be more dramatic for, say, a Camry because it has a larger engine; I just don't have that data. The Prius engine will never make less than 13 HP while driving. Toyota actually publishes an operational line that cuts off there. This is what determines when the engine comes on when accelerating from a stop, not speed. But since the HP needed is proportional to speed, harder acceleration makes it turn on at lower a speed. With the optimum RPM (it is different for each power level): HP=13, BSFC~=222 g/kWh HP=15, BSFC~=219 g/kWh HP=20, BSFC~=218 g/kWh HP=25, BSFC~=216 g/kWh HP=28.5, BSFC~=214 g/kWh
I do pulse-glide-coast. 24 Corolla Cross AWD hybrid getting 85+mpg @70% ev. Humourous the miles to empty has to reset at least 3x per tank, mpg display is ALWAYS WRONG 25% to low😂
I heard that if you input your destination in the GPS, the car will know when to use electric and when to use gas depending on the elevation/inclinaison.
I’ve read somewhere that this was US only. The vehicle will know there’s a long decent ahead so it will spend more battery so it can get maximum regen when it is able to.
You can't pulse and glide using the cruise control because the cruise control is controlling the pedal. If you do use cruise control, the car will randomly go into battery mode only when it deems necessary.
At times I can see how the technic works but sometimes the engine stays on even going down a non steep hill. What does this mean when the engine stays on for longer than expected? I m new to the world of hybrids. Only one week now. The total miles driven seems to match the miles to empty and I don’t think it’s suppose to work like that correct? Thanks for your info
The car knows when to use the engine and when not to use the engine. It's very frustrating, as I often think that the engine shouldn't be on in certain situations. Depending on how long the car has been on, how many miles you've driven the car in the current session, or the battery warmth, the engine will come on when it wants to. You won't be able to pulse and glide every time you want to, but you should be able to do it the majority of the time you want to. I have an '09 Prius, and it really annoys me when the engine is on when I don't think it should be on. 😂
On most HEV without heat pump (usually only on some PHEV or EV), the engine needs to keep the battery charged while keeping itself warm for normal operation instantaneously in all conditions ;therefore, whenever the battery fuel level dips below the minimal programed level or whenever the ICE (Internal combustion engine aka gas/diesel engine) dips below the normal preset operations temperature the ICE will always kicks in to fulfill the needs.
I'm from the US . My state gets around 3.50 . And was almost 5 dollars in 2022 when Russia .I know The politician wants us to move to electric cars .But for another 10 years -12 years hybrid is still a better choice
Hey Man, thanks a lot for the useful tip, i have been using the pulse and glide without knowing with my gasoline cars :D with my old GOLF V i was at 5.6/6.0 per 100KM (30% city 70% highway) New to hybrids i have been doing research on tips on how to efficiently drive one, and pulse and glide was the term of the technique i've been driving with :D My question is, do you advise driving on eco mode even on highways while doing pulse and glide ? Thank you so much
That's what I've doing recently, and how I gain efficiency. It works, but it's also a lot of work and a bit distracting. But you can save a bit of fuel, I guess. On the highway and motorway, don't bother. That's more for city, suburbs, and country lanes. Above 50 mph, there's too much drag to make s difference.
Being a hybrid, do you notice that the car slows down a bit faster than a non hybrid car. When you let off the gas, the hybrid slows down much faster than a non hybrid especially on the highway. Is this normal character for hybrids?
It is because the regenerative brake is always on (some vehicle has option to turn it off) when the acceleration paddle is not press to regenerate the vehicle's battery pack.
I can’t do this. Dynamic cruise control is the way to go for me on the highway. If toyota would update cruise control to do pulse and glide, that would be great and I’d do it.
I have a KIA 6-speed DCT hybrid and I find the cruise control uses ~1.5-2 MPG more fuel than when how I hypermiling manually on my daily 100KM country rout at up to 90KM/h speed so I stopped using it and my MPG increases.
you explained this way better than a certain UK video i watched... Are you putting your vehicle in eco or normal mode while doing this technique? Or does that not matter?
The car is on. When he takes his foot off the gas pedal, the gasoline engine turns off, but the car is still rolling forward. When he gently presses his foot back on the gas pedal, the electric engine takes over to keep the car moving forward for a while.
I have seen Hypermillers doing so but usually in hypermiling competitions as it is a very dangerous practice since all the electric components are turned off including the power steering, power breaks and all the hydraulic system of the vehicle.
Thanks for your info…
“You want to drive safely…” says the guy who spent most of the video not even touching the steering wheel. Also, this boomerang effect is what causes heavy traffic, a few people doing this is going to cause traffic jams which means you and everyone else on the road will actually use more fuel. Just put your car in eco mode and let your car’s computer manage your fuel consumption, it’s smarter than most drivers.

On most HEV without heat pump (usually only on some PHEV or EV), the engine needs to keep the battery charged while keeping itself warm for normal operation instantaneously in all conditions ;therefore, whenever the battery fuel level dips below the minimal programed level or whenever the ICE (Internal combustion engine aka gas/diesel engine) dips below the normal preset operations temperature the ICE will always kicks in to fulfill the needs.
nx350h regular 87 vs premium 91 mpgs. Please do a comparison.
No difference in my experience
How much do you save gas . While using pulse and glide
Between 5 to 10% is what I am getting.
I'm from the US . My state gets around 3.50 . And was almost 5 dollars in 2022 when Russia .I know The politician wants us to move to electric cars .But for another 10 years -12 years hybrid is still a better choice
When you glide do you press the break or just leave the accelerator?
Just leave it!
Hey Man, thanks a lot for the useful tip, i have been using the pulse and glide without knowing with my gasoline cars :D with my old GOLF V i was at 5.6/6.0 per 100KM (30% city 70% highway)
New to hybrids i have been doing research on tips on how to efficiently drive one, and pulse and glide was the term of the technique i've been driving with :D
My question is, do you advise driving on eco mode even on highways while doing pulse and glide ?
Thank you so much
On the highway you will be basically running fully on the gasoline engine, so it doesn’t really matter.
Were u in eco mode in the video?
Yes!
9:04 this is kind of funny, when you drive ~$55k car and telling about saving "a dollar" XDD
Don’t hold the steering wheel, got it! Haha! Thanks for the video and explanation. Please drive safely.
Eco is slightly better of course on engine timing but it really is negligible.
Is Pulse and Glide more effective than just use the cruise control? I usually just set the speed and let the car do its thing.
Yes it is for city driving
@@carswithsonduren thanks for your answer. It is better for city driving, cruise control or manual pulse and glide?
@Christian-of1tz manual pulse glide :)
My 17 Year Old Toyota Yaris 1 Litre engine gets 4.8 L / 100 km. Why bother?
how do you drive the car without the car being on ?
The car is on. When he takes his foot off the gas pedal, the gasoline engine turns off, but the car is still rolling forward. When he gently presses his foot back on the gas pedal, the electric engine takes over to keep the car moving forward for a while.
I have seen Hypermillers doing so but usually in hypermiling competitions as it is a very dangerous practice since all the electric components are turned off including the power steering, power breaks and all the hydraulic system of the vehicle.
What does pulse mean, accelerate?
Yes. It means accelerating up to the speed limit or just slightly over it.
. Do you take your foot off the pedal after you pulse?
@@phalisatumblin1249 yes, and then you slightly push the pedal again, and you should be on battery only for a while.
My problem with this is that it's hard to maintain speed without the engine turning on. I'll keep trying though
You will find the right balance of throttle to maximize it!
@@carswithsonduren thanks. Ok, I got it down now. Got 66 mpg coming home rather than the usual 46. Thanks for the tutorial!
@arachosia that’s awesome wow. 😮
Thanks for your info…
THE #1 FUEL-SAVING TIP FOR LEXUS & TOYOTA HYBRIDS is leaving it in the driveway.
12% fuel reduction.. Nice, but having to drive pulsating all the time?
“You want to drive safely…” says the guy who spent most of the video not even touching the steering wheel.
Also, this boomerang effect is what causes heavy traffic, a few people doing this is going to cause traffic jams which means you and everyone else on the road will actually use more fuel.
Just put your car in eco mode and let your car’s computer manage your fuel consumption, it’s smarter than most drivers.
In my mountainous country it is not so efficient.😆
Thank you sharing your experience. Which method is effective in the mountainous area for HEV in your experience?
@@Jeo-What Hello friend, definitely power mode, more torque with less throttle
10 second thing explained in 10 minutes... Watch if you really have time...
Youre starting to tread into the " high mileage per gallon" Prius owner club territory bragging..lmao
let’s say I’m just gently massaging that line 😂 times are tough!
@Cars with Sonduren know the feeling.. haven't driven the truck since fall because I haven't had to.. in city it averages 20l.. jeep is a bit better at 15.. once salt is gone the wife's Velar should do 10 in city.
I'll try it tommorow when I pick up my Rav 4 Hybrid Ltd in Windchill Pearl....because after a year the only thing Lexus could deliver was two price increases ..no NX350H 😂 😂...ahhh fck it I'm saving 8500 and 350 a year in insurance. Plus I have more bells 😂 Then a NX350H Signature with Premium Package.
Damn man well the Rav 4 is still awesome :)
@@carswithsonduren Rav 4 is a nice Dependable vehicle............HOWREVER it is not even in the same league as it is MUCH more noisy...(not nearly as insulated) the infotainment system is NOT EVEN Close to the Lexus!
Very true definitely a lot of reason to go with the Lexus even tho they have the same technical bones.
@@donaldbanner2185 you can only wait so long for a car. It's been a year still with no dealer allocation. My 18 year old Honda needs an update. Yes a Rav 4 is not a Lexus but I have had both on order for the same length of time I was told 6 months for the Lexus and 12 months for the R4. .....Well Lexus FAILED.
And I'm in Canada where the NX350H is made !
.. I honestly believe the dealer did not want to order my Lexus as I didn't order the higher option package. Plus changing the model year from a 23 to a 24 just to jack the price again .....was the final kick in the groin
Useless on the freeway
