Did I hear correctly that when you hit the brakes, the actual brakes don’t engage until 5 mph? The braking you experience is the inverter motors braking to charge the battery?
Hi! For hybrid models, when you are doing normal braking, the motor/generators on the vehicle will slow the vehicle down when you take your foot off of the accelerator. Then, generally when you reach about 5 - 10 mph, the discs engage. If you are doing emergency braking the discs engage right away for full emergency braking force. Regenerative braking is helps to generate power for the hybrid battery and the brakes typically last longer than on full gas vehicles. Thanks for double checking.

I just bought an IS 300H and I have one or two questions please: 1- I do most of the commute in city with a bit of hills. I see that I usually to 40mpg which seems quite high no ? And I am really not flooring it… 2- I turned my “a/c” off but still with the fans on and a temperature set. I noticed that air flow seem to be at the temperature set so I am not sure how to do to set the aircon off and just enjoy air flow from the exterior (without opening the windows ;)) 3- I also notice that my battery usually loses 1 or 2 bars overnight at the garage. I usually only drive 15-20miles per day for my commute so I think the battery never gets the chance to fully charge right ?
Hi Ivan, Congrats on your new IS300h! Sounds like you are a very good hybrid driver. Some quick general notes and then I'll answer each question. Your mpg might lower over time as you have more and more miles driven on the car for the system to average. Always make sure to put the correct and high quality fuel in the vehicle for best performance. 1. 40mpg does seem high, but it sounds like you are driving in a very fuel efficient way. I would continue to monitor and see how you progress with it. We don't have an IS hybrid in the US so I don't have any personal experience driving the model you mentioned. 2. The temperature readout for climate control is the selected temperature the vehicle will reach and maintain when the AC compressor is on and the car is conditioning the air. When you turn the AC Compressor off (no light on the AC feature in the Climate Control screen), then only the fan is blowing .You will not be able to get a temperature readout of the interior cabin air, since there is not an internal thermometer that does this function. 3. The battery usage imagery is just an example of usage up or down, it is not exact. Also, the hybrid systems don't usually full charge or fully discharge the hybrid batteries. It helps to extend the life of the hybrid battery. Hope this helps. Congrats again!
@@NorthsideLexus thanks a lot for taking time to answer my “newbie” doubts :) for the a/c I was confused because I still see temperature indication even though the a/c button is off. Seems weird, should only have the level of fan power then. For the fuel consumption, little by little I see that the consumption drops. Maybe it takes some time to average. I have to finished my first tank of gas yet so I’ll see if the next one is better ;)
@@tuccobuibui You bet! I'm always happy to help. I would give it two or three full tanks of gas before you start considering the "real numbers." Also, make sure to check the per tank average. It will automatically reset for you when you fill up. And you can track the overall mpg, when you look at Fuel After Reset and don't reset it (don't zero out and start over manually). Since you are the only driver of the car it will be factoring your history from for the life of the car. :)
I had a IS300H. I used it just like I would any other car and it was fantastic. But I sold it because it was too low down. Bought a RX450H. Just slide in rather than bend down and quite often hit my head on the top of the door.
Hi @saheddd, EV is Electric Vehicle Mode. This mode allows the vehicle to travel short distances at very low speeds on hybrid battery power alone. It is not always available and the system will tell you if there is not sufficient charge to support it. This mode is about conserving emissions not fuel. This mode puts a lot of demand on the hybrid battery and will require the gas engine to turn on sooner. Depending on where you live, the climate, terrain, etc. it may be best not to use EV mode if you are trying to maximize your MPG. I was told that it was really designed to be used in parking structures in places that have emissions taxes and tolls.
I have a hybrid car and the battery, (I mean the hybrid battery) is always half full, never fully charged, When I want to use only EV mode it says the battery is empty. What can you tell me about that. Thank you.

Hi! I really enjoyed your video. I had a quick question for you. I recently went on vacation for 3 months and left my UX 250h parked. When I came back the battery was dead, so I had to get it jumpstarted and the car works again. I was told to drive the car to recharge the battery. But when I'm driving I can can only charge the battery to about 3-4 out of 6 bars. Is there enough charge on battery for me to use the car on a regular basis? Or do I need to drive it with more braking to get the battery level higher? Also if I'm away for a long time again in the future, can I start the car and leave it running for a few minutes using enform app? Is this enough to keep the battery going or does it need to be driven? Thanks!
Hi @haloman53916 Thanks for your questions. Here are some tips and explanations that may help. When they jump started your UX 250h, they were jumping the accessory battery and not the hybrid battery. The accessory batteries on the hybrid cars do well with a trickle charger if you are going to be gone for long periods of time. You can ask your dealership's Parts or Service departments if they have one they recommend. When you are looking at the Energy Monitor screen, that battery image represents the hybrid batter and not the accessory battery. It is also just a summary of what is happening with the powertrain and not an exact depiction. The hybrid battery is also designed to not fully charge or fully discharge to help prevent a battery memory. This help to prolong the life of the hybrid battery. Regenerative braking helps to charge the hybrid battery, but not the accessory battery. The engine will also help to charge the hybrid battery when it turns on. The remote starter app can be run for two 10 minute cycles in a row, but after that the car needs to be started with from inside the vehicle. This could be helpful, but not if you are gone for an extended trip. Most people prefer to purchase a small trickle charger and leave it attached in the garage if they are going on a long trip. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for tuning in.
I have a hybrid car and the battery, (I mean the hybrid battery) is always half full, never fully charged, When I want to use only EV mode it says the battery is empty. What can you tell me about that. Thank you.
Hi I’ve get my 2021 ES300h recently, I’m just wondering whether the electric generator increases the regenerating force depending on the amount of brake I apply to the paddle. You’ve mentioned in the video that the brake disc won’t engage until 5 mph, so does the brake force all come from the electric generator above 5 mph if I gently slowing down the vehicle?😁
Hi Ryan! It's so awesome to hear you learning so much about your ES Hybrid! The regenerative braking comes from the motor/generators operating in generator mode. They are slowing down the vehicle (unless you slam on the brakes in a emergency and the discs engage). When they slow the car down, they build a load on the generators that is then transferred to the hybrid battery to help maintain the charge. You'll notice that you can't really coast in a hybrid like you can an all gas vehicle. You begin to slow down more noticeably as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator. That sensation is the generators kicking in and slowing the vehicle down for regenerative braking.
@@NorthsideLexus I used to drive a old BMW 735i, and in fact, the ES hybrid coast way more longer when I turn on the ECO mode which will activate the AGC(auto glide control) when I let off the gas. As for the question about regenerative brake, I’ve found a video that explains how the system works. Actually the generator will gradually increase the regenerative power as you gently apply more brake. ruclips.net/video/FzGp2I0jelM/видео.html By the way I’m from Taiwan 😁😁 I’ve learned a lot from you video, many thanks to you 😆
Glad you like the videos. The Toyota training video is great. There are a lot of factors for regenerative braking, the speed the vehicle is traveling, amount of distance traveled while slowing down, etc. Try to use the Energy Monitor Screen, it's only a summary and not exact, but it is a great tool to learn the energy flow and see how your driving impacts the system. :)
They are lovely cars, we have the IS300h. They do need to be used, like most cars. Sitting doing nothing during the Covid lockdown, the 12v battery will discharge. We took ours out for a run the other day and had to cut our journey short. Hi ellie, It is possible to get better gas mileage on cruise control, but the most regenerative braking occurs during stop and go driving on streets rather than the highway, so it will really depend on your overall commute and driving habits.
problems you have is that many drivers are impatient and start to hyperventilate when you are slow off the mark or you cruise to a stop. Unfortunately many people can' wait . They drive like their lives depend on it and can't stand slow drivers even though you may be driving at or close to the legal speed. I had a case in point today when turning onto a main road from side street. I had plenty of time but the driver going straight through on the main road was going like a bat out of hell and had to slow down for me. Needless to say I got a bunch of fingers and abuse. People don't want to sit behind someone who is driving normally and within the speed limits.
I drive a 2016 Lexus ES 300h and have tried ECO mode but I absolutely Hate It! It's NOT SAFE to drive with so little power like that here in California with all these Nascar wannabe drivers! You're just asking for an accident if you allow your vehicle to very slowly speed up or down! You will get into an accident! I can almost guarantee that here!
Hey @DriverSteve. It's always important to choose the setting that works best for you and your driving environment. If ECO mode doesn't work well for you try keeping nit in Normal mode for more torque from a stop and acceleration with lane changes. Sport mode is more aggressive, but has to be selected each time you turn the car on. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for tuning in.

Hi Mike, I'm not sure which model you have, but on the majority of the Lexus hybrids, the battery doesn't' fully charge or fully discharge. That helps to prolong the life of the hybrid battery. Also, the display on the Energy Monitor screen is an overview or summary of what is happening with the powertrain. It will not be an exact representation. I hope this helps! Thanks for being here!
Can’t find any info about what icons E & L means on consumption history graph. Is anyone can explain this to me? Thanks.
Hi @robertwla1, Sorry for the delay. When I look at the vehicles and owner's manuals I don't see an "E or L" in the graph, but there is a field for "Latest" and another for Elapsed Time after Start." Those are the only correlations I've found so far for "E & L." Can you please tell me the model and year of your Lexus and I'll be happy to check on this for you?
@@NorthsideLexus I have rx450h 2016 with full 15" nav. On 15min graph is last consumption bars and on some there is little mark with E or L symbol. I did picture but I can't add it here.
When towing what's the best drive mode to get a better gas millage? Eco, normal or sports mode? Thanks
Towing is tough on fuel economy period. There is no way around it. I would recommend talking to a trailer hitch installer with more towing experience to get more information. Also keep in mind that Sport mode is the least fuel efficient drive mode.
I just bought an IS 300H and I have one or two questions please:
1- I do most of the commute in city with a bit of hills. I see that I usually to 40mpg which seems quite high no ? And I am really not flooring it…
2- I turned my “a/c” off but still with the fans on and a temperature set. I noticed that air flow seem to be at the temperature set so I am not sure how to do to set the aircon off and just enjoy air flow from the exterior (without opening the windows ;))
3- I also notice that my battery usually loses 1 or 2 bars overnight at the garage.
@@NorthsideLexus thanks a lot !!! Love this car so far. So easy to drive in our congested European streets (Paris)
I had a IS300H. I used it just like I would any other car and it was fantastic. But I sold it because it was too low down. Bought a RX450H. Just slide in rather than bend down and quite often hit my head on the top of the door.
What is the red EV mode on the dashboard screen where you can turn it on or off
Hi @saheddd, EV is Electric Vehicle Mode.
Thank you.
Hi thanks for this informative video 👍
You bet! Thanks so much for tuning in with us!
My indicator shows maximum 6 bars of 8. Never seen 8 of 8. Is it normal?
Hi Michael, yes, that sounds normal. It is really just a summary screen. It does not reflect the exact charge of the battery. Keep in mind that the hybrid battery will also not fully charge or fully discharge to help extend the life of the battery. Hope this helps.
I frequently have 7 bars on my RX450H. Does 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres which I think is excellent. Use Premium gas

Thanks so much for tuning in.
charging will never get to all bars. Mine gets to 1 off the last bar. Something to do with battery memory.

By the way I’m from Taiwan 😁😁 I’ve learned a lot from you video, many thanks to you 😆
Glad you like the videos.
They do
need to be used, like most cars. Sitting doing
nothing during the Covid lockdown, the 12v
battery will discharge. We took ours out for a run
the other day and had to cut our journey short.
It had a misfire on a cylinder which is either a spark
plug or coil. Either way I don't expect it will be a
cheap fix.. It's five years old with 28,500 miles on
the clock.
So sorry to hear that is happening on your IS300h. The warranty period is longer on the hybrid vehicles. Perhaps the issue will be covered? It's definitely worth checking. Best of luck and thanks so much for watching.
@@NorthsideLexus I would imagine the extended warranty only covers the Hybrid System. Probably just the 10yr warranty on the traction battery, as it's serviced by Lexus.
@@tectorama yes, that's correct. It's for the hybrid components of the powertrain. I was hoping that it might be covered for you. That is definitely out of my area of expertise though. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Will I get a better gas millage on cruise control?
Hi ellie, It is possible to get better gas mileage on cruise control, but the most regenerative braking occurs during stop and go driving on streets rather than the highway, so it will really depend on your overall commute and driving habits.
Why does no one explain ev mode
Thanks for being here. I'll try to address that more in future videos. If you have a question about it please let me know and I'll see if I can help.
Northside lexus west side lexus Houston Texas 👍👍👍
Woo hoo!
problems you have is that many drivers are impatient and start to hyperventilate when you are slow off the mark or you cruise to a stop.
Yikes, @huggy Bear! Glad you're safe and OK! Thanks very much for tuning in with us!
@@NorthsideLexus The ironic thing is, I find that keeping it in Sport mode gives me 41 and even 42 mpg than any other setting! That's 2 mpg more than the specs say it will give me!
@@driversteve9345 Wow! That is wild! Good for you! If you can have more get up and go AND better fuel economy...that's awesome! When I had my NXh it was the opposite. If I drove in Sport I noticed my average MPG go down. I like the Normal Mode, best. I have an all gas NX now and the arc of Eco Mode seems more subtle, but I could be imagining it. Maybe they are getting better and better at the timing? Not sure. Glad you are having a great experience with your setup!
@@NorthsideLexus I didn't always used the power in sport mode even though it's there! I used it when I needed it and it was there waiting for me without me having to do anything which is much better than having to always adjust the settings to match the road conditions I was in.
