  • Who genuinely can say they love doing research for their trip? I know I do 90% of the time and the other 10% is when I’m getting overwhelmed by the amount of information I’m collecting. However, recently I discovered an easier way to plan an itinerary.
    That discovery was ... Google My Maps. It’s a game changer! 🙌🏼 Ever since I began planning my trips with it, I haven’t looked back. It’s so helpful in making decisions on where to stay and which activities to do because it’s all visually displayed on the map. 🗺 Once I go on the trip, I can easily make decisions and guide myself to different locations because all of my research is stored neatly in one place! 🤗
    In my video, I show you how you can create your travel itinerary using Google My Maps.

    Hi everyone! Thank you so much for watching this video. 😃It's been a pleasure answering your questions and receiving your compliments. See below for frequently asked questions.
    ✨F A Q ✨
    Q1. Can you use the maps offline?
    A1. You can download a map of the city/country you are visiting and view/get directions offline. Step 1 - Search for the city or country. Step 2 - Look at the buttons at the top and tap on "Download". Step 3 - Zoom in/out to choose the area of the map you want to download. Step 4 - Tap on "Download". Step 5 - Once you get to your destination, use Google Maps normally. (Only driving directions will be shown. Transit and walking directions will not be shown.) However if you want to specifically see the "Google My Map" you created when you are on airplane mode/offline, right now Google tells us "Couldn't open your list of maps."
    Q2: How do you get step by step directions on iPhone Google Maps?
    A2: When viewing the map you created on Google My Maps, it is like an itinerary. There isn't a feature in the "Google My Maps" function to allow for directions on mobile. It is something you would need to search for on the regular Google Maps search function.
    Q3: I cant seem to find the app of my google maps. Did they stop the app? I found it only as a website.
    A3: Google My Maps does not have a separate app from Google Maps, it is an embedded feature. Please see 12:37 to 13:15 to learn how to access it.
    Q4: How do you create a Google My Maps on your iPhone and not only on desktop?
    A4: Right now it doesn’t look like Google lets us create a “Google My Maps” on our phone. We are just able to view the map we created on desktop, on our phone.
    Q5: Can you set departure times?
    A5: I tested it out on the computer and yeah, I'm also not seeing departure times. But if you go to the Google Maps app, tap on "Saved" button, then tap on "Maps", tap the custom map you created, tap on the pin you want to go to, tap "Directions", and you will be able to put in departure times.
    Q6: Is there a way to re-sort the layers?
    A6: If you mean by "re-sort", you are referring to moving the order of the categories to move "Hotel" below "Restaurants" (for example), hover your mouse over the name of the category. Your cursor should turn into a hand. Then click (the cursor should turn into 4 arrows), and drag up or down.
    Q7: I can't seem to add the same location more times in the same layer. Do you know how? In my itinerary we need to visit the same place more than once during the day and I use the layer as a program.
    A7: If you go to the little buttons underneath the search bar - hover over the little pin 📌 icon and it says "Add marker" and then click on the same spot you are going to be visiting.
    Q8: Is it possible to add new places/pins to layers on a mobile phone when already traveling and on the go?
    A8: At this time it doesn’t appear so, I wish we could! However, the alternative would be to click on the location and then click on “Save” and choose a list. There’s existing lists like “Favorite” but you can create a new one. This list won’t merge with the Google My Maps you created and doesn’t allow you to write comments or any extra things, just allows you to save.

Several years ago I spent hours creating a custom map for a trip with all the places we wanted to go but I keep having to toggle back and forth to the "live" Google Map and then back again to my custom "Google My Maps" to see where we had to go. My custom map just wouldn't show our live location (the all-important blue dot) This was confusing and ate time. What was I doing wrong? I did just change the setting in Google Maps to "Location > Always" on my iPhone. I just want this map to work better than my last one! Thanks for any tips you can provide.

      I tried to plan something with this app and it just doesn't work. You cannot hide any of the layers in the app itself. You can only do it on your desktop. So If I tried to plany 10 days trip, with directions to multiple locations it would just all look terrible on the map, unusable. Furthermore it doesn't seem to be showing you the actual directions as a live map. It looks like it was abbandoned by google devs and just left as is.

    • @green_beats

      The app looks like it was abbandoned by google devs. It doesnt work at all in the way that you would need it to. You can't change the visibility of the layers in the app, you need to do it on your computer. And it doesn't show the live directions/route as you would with the actual google maps. Its useless in my opinion.

    • @BlondeInTheAir
      @BlondeInTheAir  3 месяца назад

      Hi Jim! When viewing the map you created on Google My Maps, it is like an itinerary. There isn't a feature in the "Google My Maps" function to allow for directions on mobile. It is something you would need to search for on the regular Google Maps search function.

    SUPER helpful! Question: how did you create your Day 1, Day2 lists? Can I drag pins I put on the map or do I have to create another layer?

    • @BlondeInTheAir
      @BlondeInTheAir  3 месяца назад

      Hi PennySue, The Day 1, Day 2 lists are layers that were renamed to be "Day 1". If you click on that layer, you can choose which pin you want to add to that layer. You'll see a button that says "+ Add to the map". Check out 02:56 😊 If you put a pin in the wrong layer, you can click and drag it to the correct layer. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Hello! Your video is amazing. This is exactly what I needed for my travels. I usually create a very detailed Excel Spreadsheet. I have one question... if I want to island hop in Greece; can I use this Google My Map to have it show me easiest ways to hop from island to the next? Thank you

    • @BlondeInTheAir
      @BlondeInTheAir  2 года назад +1

      Hi TracyAnne! This is great to hear, thank you so much for letting me know that my video has helped you! 😊 & To answer your question, I wish Google My Maps can do that. The only directions feature shows driving routes - not even walking routes. Island hopping would mean boat or plane routes, which Google My Maps doesn't show. If you Google "Greek island hopping blog posts" or search up "island hopping in Greece" on RUclips, you will see advice from travel bloggers/RUclipsrs. I wish I made a video to point you to, but I haven't personally done this yet.

      @@BlondeInTheAir Unfortunately, as the programme originated your side of the pond where public transport is virtually non-existent, the programmers seem to have decided that EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE does trips by car. As a septuagenarian planning an interrail trip in Europe, you can image my frustration at only being able to map one rail trip at a time and only in Google maps directions (even then it did not give me the most economic routes or opportunity to show ferries)!

    • @BlondeInTheAir
      @BlondeInTheAir  2 года назад

      Thank you for watching my video! Here are the answers to your questions:
      Q1 - When you click on an item in the legend, it will take you to where that item is located on the map. Not sure if that answers your question. Can you please rephrase your question if this doesn't help?
      Q2 - Not sure why your drag/drop doesn't work, it works for me. Click on the item and start dragging, you will see 4 arrows (that go up, down, left, right). If you do see the 4 arrows, that's good. Just bring the item over to the "day section".

      Hi Nigel! You're welcome 😊
Transit and walking directions will not be shown.)
      However if you want to specifically see the "Google My Map" you created when you are on airplane mode/offline, right now Google tells us "Couldn't open your list of maps."

    • @BlondeInTheAir

      At this time it doesn’t appear so, I wish we could! However, the alternative would be to click on the location and then click on “Save” and choose a list. There’s existing lists like “Favorite” but you can create a new one. This list won’t merge with the Google My Maps you created and doesn’t allow you to write comments or any extra things, just allows you to save.
