Cutting Jade Pounamu With a Diamond Saw

- Опубликовано: 28 июл 2017
- This is how I cut small blocks and slices of pounamu, jade before I carve them into pendants or sculptures. Using a small diamond trim saw run off an electric motor. This is a piece of crust that I was interested to try and make a blank for a pounamu hei toki with. This is usually the first step for me when carving a pounamu pendant. The time it takes to cut varies depending on the thickness of the pounamu and also on the hardness or density of the pounamu.
Very nice, thank you for these videos. They inspire us to try new things.
Kia ora bro massive mahi🙏😎🔥❤️
Kia ora thanks for the good tips. I’ve got a piece of pounamu that I’m just tying to sand down so that it’s smooth. I’m not carving it just keeping its stone shape but would like it nice and smooth. I’ve spent an hour or two sanding with an angle grinder attachment to try and get rid of the small divots but I’m not having much luck. Do I just keep on with this method or do you have another tip? 😊
What disc are you looking using on the angle grinder. Should have some progress I. That time
Do you ever use a fence? Or does the saw blade keep the piece straight enough for a rough piece?
Hi, I don't and it can lead to cuts that are not perfect. I use my eye to cut with saw. This is also a homemade trim saw so has a degree of inaccuracy in it that needs to be taken into account, particularly for deep and/or long cuts. For precision a fence and better quality setup would be needed.
Kia ora. Csn you get small cutters ‽ I'm a weaver have off cuts, wanting to cut small pieces to fit into my kete earrings. Thanks.
Yes I have a bunch of small offcuts and tumbled pieces. Contact me through my website, campbellcarving.co.nz
Kia Ora matua, thanks for the video, what is the brand of blade you are using?and is it a sintered blade?I have a tile saw that cuts 5.5 deep, bought off a tiler,I’ve been using the original tile blade, which has diamonds, should I
Change to a proper greenstone blade,it cuts neat and clean, but is a bit slow,I’ve been cutting rocks that are 8-10 cm deep, cutting through one side, then flipping it over and cutting the other, you think it’s too much work on the tile saws motor?appreciate your advice matua, regards
Edward
From what I know tile saws are great for stone. My blade is a cheap one, if you think yours might be worn out I suggest trying to get a cheap one from overseas to see if it works better, try richon tools. Cutting jade is slow just depends on on if your blade is worn out.

Watch out for your fingers ehoa🙏
Bro I'm cringing seeing your fingers so close to the blade. Can't you at least wear gloves?
Dont stress. It is a fine grinding blade so wont cut skin with a quick touch. Just takes off a bit of your finger print lol.
