Aotearoa New Zealand - Pounamu Carver. I carve Pounamu, New Zealand Jade, Greenstone. I carve Pounamu as well as working full time as a Teacher. I struggled to find good information on how to go about starting to make necklaces and pendants when beginning all this. This channel is to share what I am doing as I learn and develop my abilities as a Pounamu Carver. Campbellcarving.co.nz
Pounamu Workshop Tour 2025
Welcome to my workshop! In this video, I take you on a tour of my workspace where I create my Pounamu carvings. From the shelves holding raw Pounamu to my water-cooled tools and polishing station, I'll show you everything I use to transform rough stone into wearable taonga. Whether you're a carver looking to set up your own workspace or just curious about the tools and techniques I use, this video has plenty to explore. I'm proud of this setup and happy to share tips from my experience. Thanks for watching, and feel free to ask questions or share your own workshop ideas!

Why Does Pounamu have a Rind?
Просмотров 40914 дней назад
Pounamu has a Rind as it oxidises as it is weathered over many mnay years. The stone changes and can be come pale green white and brown. It can be softer and not good for carving. It can still be hard enough too.

Pounamu Sanding Sticks and Strips

This video talks about some sanding tools I use. Silicon Carbide sanding sticks, i get these from richon tools. Com but you can get them lots of places, pretty cheap. And diamond sand paper or cloth. This can be used in a variety of ways, commonly cut into strips for sanding curves. This is expensive but can last a while. I got mine a while ago from jadecarver.com. Com. Kia ora Campbell Marvellous set up. Not far from retiring and dream of learning Pounamu carving..... Hope to inspire my little mokopuna....
Kia ora, you've got a great dream there - good luck with it.
No idea what these are, what material or their meanings but regardless your chairmanship is incredible keep up the good work
Thank you very much!
Nice color,I have a greenstone slab but why is it very dark and seems magnetic?
Comes in many colours and shades. Some serpentine is magnetic. Not totally sure why.
@@CampbellCarving Hi, Does it needs to be cut thinner for the green color to show?Or some are just dark.
@CaStW some are just dark. If it is translucent and strong enough then a thin slice will look very green held up with light behind it.
Beautiful! How long to do one of this?
I have been working on and off on this for several weeks. The final sanding getting rid of the tool marks on one like this takes ages!
Great you sorted out the rotation for your pendants. Beautiful piece of stone.
Yeah I think I've finally got a system that works!
What’s that stuff your talking about in the bro
Awesome workshop bro! Lots of great ideas, good to see all the different tools and work stations.
Thanks mate, it's always evolving.
What a great set up! A lot of thought has gone in to that!
Thanks, It’s always evolving, but it’s finally feeling like a really good space to work in.
Nga mihi for the tour you should be proud! I’ve got the Hei tiki book on my bedside table ready to read too. Love the idea of putting a cloth in the bucket to capture the ‘dust/stone residue’ before being sucked up in the pump , I’ll keep that in mind when creating my space. Where do you purchase your cord from?
Hey, I get my cord from caudwell.co.nz. The thing in the bucket is actually a piece of foam mat that I am hoping will stop evaporation a bit, not sure if it catches much of the residue...
@@CampbellCarvingahhhh that makes sense too !! Im in Brissy and you can imagine how fast evaporation happens here. Appreciate the link for the cord I will check it out
Nice shop
Thanks, it's a bit of a mess but it works!
Awesome Studio Tour!!!!!
Thanks, been needing to do a new one for ages.
Campbell, can you do a video of a little tour of the workshop space? I'm going to be setting up my own here soon. Curious about your space.
For sure, it has been a while since I have done this. There are some old videos of my space a d some setting it up too. Have a look through my channel.
@@CampbellCarving will do, and thanks!
Love the colours on this one
Thanks, it's really a beautiful stone!
Not relevant to this post, but did you see the recent news releases that Tahutahi pounamu is for sale? Apparently, it is not usually available. I thought you might be interested....
Yes I did, it's pretty cool. Ngāi Tahu will be controlling that pretty closely I bet.
Beautiful work
Thanks, I like the way it came out.
That's cool as ❤. Love it
Can you tell the what type of pounamu without cutting into the rock
Sometimes you can sometimes it is different on the inside. Sometimes there is more than one type in the same piece!
@@CampbellCarving oh cool cheers mate🤙
I also buy pounamu from the Tauwhare. It's nice to know that the pounamu is authentic and sourced from the kaitiaki of the Arahura river
Yep definitly from the source there!
Beautiful Pounamu brother, im trying to find someone who can re-lash mine the string snapped and I live in Australia now so can't just go get it done easily 😅
Yea it is a hard thing to sort if you don't know anyone. Have you tried yourself, seen my video on it?
@CampbellCarving no i haven't but I will definitely look back on your videos
@@Andwhatsofty let me know if you can't find it
Beautiful material, it looks like cloud formations. Thanks for showing the opening of that amazing stone.
It really does! I love the way it looks like cloud formations.
De esa roca te van a salir algunas piezas , que roca es ? Yo diría que parece serpentina , seguro que salen unas hermosas piezas
Yes I hope many beautiful pieces. This is nephrite jade, its a 'young' one not super high quality but still nice.
You are truly blessed ❤️
Thanks mate, I feel lucky to be here and be able to do this!
Nice one!
Beauty! I hope I win that one!❤👍🙏
This was actually a while ago sorry.
Wow,Awesome!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Thanks, my sons Hei Toki somehow unravelled itself and he wouldn't wear it until it was fixed. I got it back together following your tutorial.
That's great to hear, I'm glad it helped!
It is very beautiful 😍
Cheers, I love the way the rind looks on these!
I love it Campbell. Merry Christmas to you & your family!
Thanks and merry Xmas to you and yours too
Simple ,sencillo , transmite elegancia , ese tono verde queda genial
Muchas gracias 😊
Looks cool campbell merry Christmas 🎅
Thanks, Merry Christmas to you too!
I see it as the inertia of the stone, try using a shorter bite on the cord, or stiffen the cord. Good luck. I have the same problem with a turntable that sets under my work. I suspect backlash in the gears.
That’s an interesting way to think about it. I’ve never thought of it like that.
The conditions of where the nephrite lies has a major impact on the rate of oxidisation. Buried in river gravels or beach sand preserves fairly well (as well as the abrasive movement helping to keep them clean as you say). Sitting above ground exposed to air causes faster oxidisation. But the real killer is dirt, especially highly acidic or alkaline ground.
@@darthvinci4831 so good to know that explains why some are more heavily oxidised than others!
Well done. Next I want to watch how do braiding.
I have a few videos on the braiding too search my channel. And they will all come up
G'day! Very grateful for this video as well for the others! Could you tell me where to buy these sliced Pounamu please? It would be amazing to try cutting my own Hei Matau.
Hey, in New Zealand there are some that come up on trademe. Otherwise you need to make connections with carvers really. Send me a message if your stuck.
@@CampbellCarving Can I have your email please?
Hey brother is the lashings and whippings of the cord is that traditional Māori style, because I’m thinking of making wood pendants and want to string them up like you do??
It is a modern take on traditional lashing guess. Not sure if they did it exactly like this or not.
@ okay thanks for getting back to me
Is the rind another type of material? I sometimes find local agates and chert that have rinds that are softer than the silicate core inside
That sounds similiar, it is weathered pounamu, can have different properties though if that is what you mean.
Another great video. I’m learning a lot about jade & ponamu! Is there any uses for the slurry? Is is no doubt a fine dust & being silicon based is probably not healthy to breathe in. I was wondering if it could be mixed in a resin?
It is not healthy to breathe in. It's not silicon, jade is tremolite based, i think and serpentine is something else.
Thank you. That was very informative. And asked questions I've had for a long time. But leads me to another one. will the pieces that are carved oxidize over time? Or will the oil from skin keep it from oxidizing?
Good question. They will but over thousands of years. not sure what impact the oil from the skin would have, some older hei tiki have some signs of weathering I think, just colour shading changes.
The sanding/polishing process helps close up the 'pores' of stone (and wood), giving a tight 'skin' that makes it more difficult for oxygen to attack the structure, & body oils also impart a protective barrier - working and wearing pounamu is perhaps the kindest thing we can do for it in terms of preservation. But yes, carved jade will still degrade over time if left to the elements (tens, hundreds or thousands of years depending on conditions).
Really interesting. Thank you and Merry Christmas 🎅🏻
Mere bro, it's screaming to be made into one of them in my opinion, offcuts for a toki and matching earrings 💪😉
Yea it is a good size for it!
@@CampbellCarving I watch and am learning a lot from your content bro, very inspiring 😉 and keep up the mean mahi
What you say about thick or hard pieces is true. I have good success with a set of 80 grit diamond burrs you can get from harbor freight tools. Spears and round burrs, but they do heat up, even with a steady flush of water and once to diamond is gone, you might as well try another bit or take a nap, as you wont be drilling holes. Thank you for sharing your craft! Have you done a video on the lashing process?
Yes thanks for sharing too! I have several videos on my Chan El about various lashings, have a browse.
2 videos in a day is a blessing! Kia ora
I've got a bit of time a d a few ideas at the moment! Watch this space one more to come at least soon.
Awesome advice bro, appreciate you sharing your matauranga
No worries, I'm happy to share.
Thanks for the great videos! I’m in Cowell South Australia where they have Australia’s biggest Jade (nephrite) deposits. Learning heaps from your videos about how to work this extraordinary material!
That's awesome, it's great to hear how helpful the videos have been!
Awesome man thanks. I'm new to all this so have no idea what I'm doing lol
We all start somewhere. I was there, and still am in many areas!
This is what I'm after!! Yess
Another tricky part of the process!
Hi.very good🙏💜⛄🍁
Thanks for stopping by!
❤Hi goodmoning. i am thailand i am doing rond. You💜🙏⛄
I appreciate the support!
Thanks for the info. Where do you get your fabulustre from? I watch a bunch of your videos cause I've been playing around with pounamu offcuts as a wee hobbie. Also what brand of demel and burrs do you use?
Fabulustre just search online lasts ages. I have a foredom hand tool for heavy work and a micro motor marathon 3 from Ali express for most stuff. Burrs are either cheap ones from anywhere or hongia brand for good stuff.
@@CampbellCarving kia ora for the help, I appreciate it
Thanks for the advice. I emailed you recently. Do you use water or dry with the sticks and cloth?
Yes I do! All the time.
Thanks for sharing Campbell
No worries, enjoy!
