Interesting, never seen that end credits bug before. They've been updating all the old Valve games for the Steam Deck, so maybe a few bugs got snuck in there.
12:20 It's amazing what a different experience this is for people today. Back when I played, players assumed that GLaDOS was prerecorded messages, (especially with the _[insert subject name here]_ type-parts) and her being a robot was a twist. Now some people jump straight to the A.I. assumption. Times really are changing.
A fun little fact: The robot dragging you back in the final cutscene wasn't there originally. Initially, it just showed you laying there among the wreckage. They edited it in a patch in the lead-up to releasing Portal 2, basically retconning the ending to be what they needed for the sequel
I'm old enough to remember the old ending where you just lay there and then it fades to black. I didn't find out about it until after I had completed Portal 2 and replayed Portal 1 again. I was so confused at the time lol.
@JeffarryLounder same thing for me. I used to think that was a plot portal to nowhere until I replayed this game. Then I thought I somehow forgot about it until reading that they added that bit later.
Other fun fact... In the developer commentary (or was it on IGN's devs react to speedruns video or somewhere else, I can't remember anymore) the developers say that the idea of that party escort robot dragging you back to the facility was floating around even during the development, but it was scrapped because it left sour taste to the ending, especially because they were not sure at point if there's even going to be a sequel.
Something you missed "Are you trying to escape? [chuckle] Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside. All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was. Unless you have a plan for building some supercomputer parts in a big hurry, this place isn't going to be safe much longer."
@@Myne1001 Yeah, I was frustrated watching him get stuck sometimes, but then again, I've played Portal 1 and 2 over and over. After a while you just start "thinking with Portals." It takes a bit though. I don't blame him at all for getting stuck on his first playthrough, and he did eventually get it!
The thing I love about this game is that all of the test chambers are one long tutorial, training you to think creatively. Then by the time you reach the end of test chamber 19 and you have to think fast or die, you should be prepared for the challenges in the rest of the game.
I really love the developer's commentary mode. The discussion of where people got stuck and how they changed the environment to give the right cues was really interesting from a design perspective.
@@Myne1001 Generally speaking glitches sometimes happen at seemingly random, but I think here the game may have gotten confused because of the timing of the final core being burned? Something about GLaDOS being at a certain point in her speech which caused it to not get ended properly, thus continuing all the way through the credits. Not entirely sure though.
That part near the end where you had to ascend after fighting the turrets had me rolling. >gets up to the next layer and gets a portal onto the surface >”Oh I did the wrong portal” >undoes the progress and starts over >repeat several times
@@Tycitron6000 portal 1 atmosphere is creepy as fk I think those endgame areas outside the testing chambers could easily pass as liminal spaces nowadays
I think a HUGE part of the difficulties you had are because you kept using the orange right-click portal as your first portal, and the blue left-button portal as an exit, but reflexively click the left mouse button while in the air.
It is such a weird feeling when you see someone struggling with things you got instantly, only for them to beat other ones ten times faster and more efficiently. 😂
The things you have on youre feet are the “long fall boots”. They will make sure that you wont take any fall damage. The white walls are the only that are “portal conductive” which means they are the only walls which you can place portals on
From Half-Life Wiki: The Long Fall Boot is a boot used by Aperture Science to prevent Test Subjects from inadvertently damaging the Portal Device while falling to their death. It does this by lessening the impact of falls, thus also preventing injury to test subjects.
God, that moment in chamber 16 when you first hit the ratman den, is just so effective. There is such a deep creepiness to Portal 1 that's really special
2:09:00 Stacking the chairs does actually work. That's how I solved it my first playthrough. I never even noticed the cube tube, let alone thought to break it, until watching some playthroughs much later. Honestly I think using the chairs feels more intuitive.
It's a rare moment in the game where I think they missed an opportunity to make something more intuitive with a design change. If you'd had to duck to go under the tube, instead of it being overhead off to the side, I think that would have clued people in more reliably.
I highly recommend you read the free online comic "Lab Rat" before playing Portal 2. It clears some things up and was released before Portal 2 came out.
17:07 the energy ball is more of a reused asset and has nothing to do with Half-Life. This is because Portal 1 is essentially a tech-demo/Half-Life 2 mod. Funnily, if I remember correctly, you can get all of HL2's weapons when you use cheat commands.
My guess is that Aperture just happened to randomly discover the same energy pellet that the Combine did, without knowing about the combine, but used it in testing chambers instead of miniaturizing it for use in weapons or using it as an energy conduit within megastructures.
That’s not necessarily true and it has never been confirmed by Valve. The voice line by GlaDOS (referring to the Combine) “all I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them” suggests that she may have given the Combine some Aperture technology in exchange for leaving the facility alone.
@@GIJew Yeah I think the combine would be advanced enough to have found Aperture during the 7 hour war so them and GlaDOS probably struck a deal when they confronted her. But I think even by the end of Portal 1 the combine are already cut off of Earth. Especially in Portal 2 which might take place 1000s of years into the future if we are to believe the voice line
I'm really impressed by the amount of lore you manage to pick up on your first time through these games. I was pretty young when I first played them, but even now I would've missed half of it lol
This is the first time I've seen someone notice before the escape sequence start there are observation windows in every room but no human beings watching. A lot of people play all the way to the boss fight before it seems to occur to them it wa a bit weird all the offices were empty.
The story of how this game came to be is quite interesting, the idea of it started it's life as an indie game called Narbacular Drop developed by students at the DigiPen institute of Technology in Washington (state). Valve is based in Seattle and like to go to events where students from around the area go to show off their projects, one such event is held by DigiPen each year and in 2005 one group of students there was showing off Narbacular Drop which was a puzzle game set in a hellscape world where you had to make it through a dungeon by placing an orange and blue portal. When Robin Walker who was a developer at valve came by he immediately got interested in the game and later asked the students to come by valve's offices to give a presentation on it mainly so that they could give some advice for the students. That presentation was given for among others Gabe Newell (co-founder and president of valve) who was so impressed with the project that he hired them on the spot essentially. Portal was then made by a relatively small team who started by only working on the gameplay of it before bringing on Marc Laidlaw (main writer for half life until he left the company in 2016) to write the story, creating the game you have now played. It was first released as part of the orange box which was a collection of Half life 2 (+the episodes), Team Fortress 2 and Portal for the Xbox 360, Windows and later the PlayStation 3 in 2007. Portal and the orange box as a whole proved to be a huge success and development for a sequel started quite quickly (but you'll have to see for yourself how that sequel turned out to be in Portal 2).
Thank you for your message. I think it's important to know the context to understand why it's totally ok that this game is quite short. The orange box was a normal-prized game that included 5 games, which is insane. There were also plans for a "Black Box" initially, including only the 3 new releases (HL2:EP2, TF2 and Portal) but Valve ended up releasing only the orange box, which already was 300% worth it for anyone. Looking forward to watch Mapo's discovery of Portal 2 :)
It's amazing how many things I take for granted after playing this game for 15 years. Like obviously you would assume there is fall damage, because why wouldn't there be? Love it!
I love that you always want to go fully blind in every playthrough of a new game, I can relate to that so much! And thank you for sharing details on what you already know about a game, you did it recently in the first episode of KOTOR 2 and it is really really helpful! :)
Such a great runthrough! You solved a lot of those puzzles faster than most people do on their first time, super impressive! Shame the ending got glitched/cursed to hell and back. Spooky slomo voice ruining what was otherwise supposed to be a lighthearted ending tune. GLaD you got to experience the game at least, always fun to watch you play new things
really? im an hour in and ive had to skip ahead like 6 times because of how slow he's moving. I refuse to believe this is fast or even average lmao im gonna go look up more blind playthroughs brb
@@Her_Imperious_Condescension judging by other unedited blind playthroughs, its actually only a bit better than average. most people beat it in 3 - 3.5 hours
Wow, that was a weird sound glitch at the end. I really love how this game requires you to think both abstractly and logically at the same time. You did very well for a first run. Portal 2 only improves on those puzzles.
I dunno if you've already played the Stanley Parable, but it's a really good game that's very portal inspired. (not so much puzzle wise, but writing and atmosphere are similar)
I'd love to add that the first, free Half-Life mod on ModDB; the HD Remix and its free Demo (on Steam), are all very unique experiences that are very worth checking out! And we got the Ultra Deluxe version just around the corner [4/27] - probably putting yet another twist onto the whole thing! (And then there are the solo projects by the two original devs - Davey Wreden's 'Everything Unlimited Ltd.'s "Beginner's Guide"' and William Pugh's 'Crows Crows Crows' '"Dr. Langeskov, the Tiger and the Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist"'.)
42:15 I have never seen anyone solve it like this! I always started with the second portal already on the upper vertical platform, and then went through the same base portal twice. First stepping through, second time falling through. Edit: Like you did at 48:45 😄 I mean, you did fire another portal just as you landed the first loop but it wasn't necessary really
Spectacular. What a classic this is. I hope you're going straight into Portal 2! It's one of the best sequels ever. I'm glad you caught the implications of all of GLaDOS's comments. There's actually a bakery here on the Eastside of the Seattle area (or was, anyway, at least a decade ago) that makes the exact cake Valve used as a model for this. My ex and I bought it once, just to say we'd had it.
it’s still there! regent bakery cafe, I had The Cake (aka the black forest cake) for my 8th birthday and if you’re in the area I recommend visiting :) their chinese pastries are the best. they also sometimes wear “the cake is a lie” shirts
If you're interested, after you beat the game you can replay it with developer commentary, and seeing someone react blindly always reminds me of the playtester reactions they mention in the commentary :)
Btw, behind the scenes info: Portal was made by Digipen students. While at Digipen, they made a game called Narbacular Drop (you can get that one for free) which did the idea of portal mechanics. Gabe Newell saw it, thought it was neat, hired the students that made it, and told them "make whatever you want". And so they made Portal, which was originally released as an extra thing in Orange Box. After most people bought Orange Box just to get Portal, it got its own separate release.
While there may be other games with a higher production quality, the first Portal is one of the only games I would call a perfect game. It is such a tight experience, a game that by playing you can feel how much the developers put their soul into it, it feels that there is not a single pixel wasted anywhere, like each one was lovingly placed down.
I'd say the fight against GlaDos holds it back from being g perfect. The fight is kinda lame as is, but from what is there, there was a ton of potential for a better fight imo.
I wouldn't call Portal 1 perfect, given I'd say it's worse than Portal 2. Portal 1's biggest problem is that the whole game feels like 1 big tutorial. By the time the game stops teaching you its mechanics, you're almost done. When I beat Glados, my reaction was "Wait, is that it?". Portal 1 feels like a demo for Portal 2.
So hyped for this playthrough. I loved your Half Life playthrough because you discovered everything so organically. Don't blame yourself for missing things, you did much better than most people.
@@Ubreakable-lr2dk Half Life and Portal are REALLY good at teaching you how to play without a tutorial. For example, early on in Half Life 2 there is a seesaw with some bricks nearby, and then later on there is a puzzle that requires you to stack bricks on one side of a lever to allow you to access a new area. He did exactly what the developers wanted in that playground, he played around on the seesaw. Because of this he solved the later puzzle much faster. He was not better at shooting, puzzles, parkour, or playing in general, because as you said there is no better way to play a game. What he did do well was he learnt how to play much faster because he allowed himself to play around and become immersed in the game. He didn't aim for a best playthrough, instead he did what felt natural to him. Which just happened to be what the developers had intended in the first place.

Fun fact; The ending of the game was retconned before the announcement of Portal 2 as it was orignally just a self-contained story. Originally the party escort associate didn´t drag you away at the end and it just transitioned over into the cake sequence. Also the login credentials that you found earlier in the playthrough were added in an update around this time and could be used to access a website related to an ARG which eventually teased the announcement of the sequel.

"my mind is an enigma" Seriously some of the things you think up I just shake my head and wonder how you ever thought that was going to work. But honestly that sort of thing is probably why you're fun to watch. I think a lot of video games either hold our hand the whole time or just reward trying random things that don't necessarily make sense. It isn't often that you get a game that legitimately just involves observation, physics and just thinking things through like this game does.
Extremely glad to see this playthrough. As I have said in the past, I love the way you play games and showcase them on your channel, its a joy to watch.
i felt like I was experiencing it again for the first time watching this, gosh the nostalgia, this game is timeless and GLaDOS mt fav villain/antagonist

The radios, by the way, are part of an achievement. If you carry them around to certain places, they will start making computer noises, and if you do it with ALL the radios, you get the achievement "Transmission Received"
Fuck yes! Thank you for taking time out of your week to play Portal. Edit: only a quarter way through, but I cannot wait for his reactions to Glad0s's more human voicelines
The bit where you try to jam the cube through the hole instead of shooting a portal onto the other side of the hole and just walking through with the cube is quite possibly the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Especially when you then shoot a portal through the hole while trying to shoot a portal close to the hole to nudge the cube through. I do hope you'll follow up with Portal 2 soon!
So happy you've finally gotten around to Portal and amazed that you beat the whole first game in one sitting. The second one is definitely going to take a few more uploads though. It has far more content and story than the first one. And what the hell was up with that deep slow-mo growling voice playing over the ending? I've never seen or heard that before. I think your game was bugging out.
YES, I waited for this! Now I need Portal 2 xD The first game is (gameplay wise) like a tutorial to the second game and Portal 2 is also a much bigger game. There are also some cool stand-alone mods you could try out later like Portal Stories: Mel and Portal Reloaded :) Very nice of you to upload the full game btw Edit: Damn, you break almost every game you play haha the slow-mo Glados voice at the end had me in tears xD How do you do it man?
2:09:24 It never occurred to me ever that you could do that. It was always the one bit in Portal I hated, the ONLY thing. They make you spend the whole game thus far thinking with portals, only to then need a few lousy props to climb into one vent opening?! So props to you (pun intended) A short but sweet experiment of a game! With some of the best pitch black humour in any game I’ve ever played!
Yup! I replayed Portal a couple weeks ago (first time since the first time I played it many years ago) and got stuck there. I ended up just grabbing a chair like he did but was more careful not to knock it over when jumping on top. It worked. I knew it couldn't be the "right" way to do it but I didn't think much of it and just carried on.
@@himikebye While it takes more intuition than many other parts of the game, I think that's too big of a cop-out for a game so famous for its subtle way of guiding the player. Maybe have the tube cracked a little bit with gas effects coming out of it to suggest that it can be cracked further.
If I can: I would highly recommend "Portal: Prelude", which is a fan-made prequel of the first Portal game. It was made before Valve created Portal 2, but the quality of the mod and story is quite high in my opinion.
Its so cool to watch someone go through this for the first time, I have started looking into speedrunning for this game and this makes me realize sometimes its nice to just chill and absorb it all.

Which emphasizes this game's puzzles can be solved a number of ways which I still discover when playing it. I also liked watching him pick together the pieces of the story together on his own when he did. I think he'll like the second game, that's all I'll say.

Something you missed
"Are you trying to escape? [chuckle] Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here.
That was fucked up at the end, with it playing her dialogue ultra slowly. That's not supposed to happen.
Yeah that was really scary
I've never seen that glitch before. Not sure what he did to cause it.

In Portal 1 Chell is barefoot and uses 'Advanced Knee Replacements', the Boots are only introduced in Portal 2

2:09:00 Stacking the chairs does actually work. That's how I solved it my first playthrough. I never even noticed the cube tube, let alone thought to break it, until watching some playthroughs much later. Honestly I think using the chairs feels more intuitive.
Yeah same here lol
I used three PCs from the turret chamber. Stacked nicely on top of each other.
came here to say this XD
@@FluffyGiraffeOne wow that's even more creative. I love it
It's a rare moment in the game where I think they missed an opportunity to make something more intuitive with a design change. If you'd had to duck to go under the tube, instead of it being overhead off to the side, I think that would have clued people in more reliably.
I highly recommend you read the free online comic "Lab Rat" before playing Portal 2. It clears some things up and was released before Portal 2 came out.
YES
17:07 the energy ball is more of a reused asset and has nothing to do with Half-Life. This is because Portal 1 is essentially a tech-demo/Half-Life 2 mod. Funnily, if I remember correctly, you can get all of HL2's weapons when you use cheat commands.
You can actually spawn the HL2 air boat in Portal 1 with a command.
Especially in Portal 2 which might take place 1000s of years into the future if we are to believe the voice line
yep it's not even called the same thing
2:25 I love that little moment of realisation of "Oh ok so people telling me its set in Aperture wasn't THAT huge of spoiler"
In a similar fashion, one of the new mechanics from portal 2 were also based on another digipen game.
I remember getting Orange Box and experiencing both Half Life and Portal for the first time, good times.

@@Her_Imperious_Condescension judging by other unedited blind playthroughs, its actually only a bit better than average. most people beat it in 3 - 3.5 hours
THAT BUGGED ENDING IS SO MUCH CREEPIER OH MY GOODNESS.
Your reaction to "the cake", a.k.a. "being baked", was worth it.
I've never seen that glitch at the end, with the slow voice. That was hilarious. An unfortunate glitch for a first timer, but still, hilarious.
At 2:30:21 you can hear Glados talk about the combine and how the world changed
Looking back, I love how everyone goes through that phase of overcomplicating solutions to simple puzzles.
A classic staple of watching Portal playthroughs.
Me: But why do x when you could just- oh whatever that works too i guess
42:15 I have never seen anyone solve it like this! I always started with the second portal already on the upper vertical platform, and then went through the same base portal twice. First stepping through, second time falling through. Edit: Like you did at 48:45 😄 I mean, you did fire another portal just as you landed the first loop but it wasn't necessary really
He did a speedrunning technique on his first time lmao
I was watching and thinking to myself "no, all you need to do is.... oh nevermind"
I think you're lying about that cake.
it’s still there! regent bakery cafe, I had The Cake (aka the black forest cake) for my 8th birthday and if you’re in the area I recommend visiting :) their chinese pastries are the best.
they also sometimes wear “the cake is a lie” shirts
Itd be funny if when people ordered that cake, it’s just an empty box
Well, except that slo-mo glados bug at the end lol
I wouldn't call Portal 1 perfect, given I'd say it's worse than Portal 2.
Portal 1's biggest problem is that the whole game feels like 1 big tutorial. By the time the game stops teaching you its mechanics, you're almost done. When I beat Glados, my reaction was "Wait, is that it?".
Portal 1 feels like a demo for Portal 2.
The warped GLADOS voice in the credits is 100% a bug and holy cow does it make the rest of the ending so much creepier.
42:10 that was impressive. You were supposed to do a double fling but instead you performed some impossible esport level portaling
So hyped for this playthrough. I loved your Half Life playthrough because you discovered everything so organically. Don't blame yourself for missing things, you did much better than most people.
I think there is no better or worse its a game its deisgned for fun and he had rly fun playing this
@@Ubreakable-lr2dk Half Life and Portal are REALLY good at teaching you how to play without a tutorial.
@@goldenredstone04 now if only valve could update games like tf2 to actually teach the player how to play

Seriously some of the things you think up I just shake my head and wonder how you ever thought that was going to work. But honestly that sort of thing is probably why you're fun to watch.
I think a lot of video games either hold our hand the whole time or just reward trying random things that don't necessarily make sense. It isn't often that you get a game that legitimately just involves observation, physics and just thinking things through like this game does.
Ah. Yes! My crippling addiction to Mapocolops Half Life episodes - something I never knew I wanted - will finally be sated again!
Extremely glad to see this playthrough. As I have said in the past, I love the way you play games and showcase them on your channel, its a joy to watch.

He thankfully wasn't spoiled on the Aperture connection; he comments on it at 4:23.
GLaDOS's glitched dialogue over the song has to be the second best Portal glitch I've seen.
The radios, by the way, are part of an achievement. If you carry them around to certain places, they will start making computer noises, and if you do it with ALL the radios, you get the achievement "Transmission Received"
This was a nostalgia treat, thank you Mapo!
Glados speaking with a deep voice in the end really nails home the theory that she is... "Still Alive"
YES, I waited for this! Now I need Portal 2 xD The first game is (gameplay wise) like a tutorial to the second game and Portal 2 is also a much bigger game. There are also some cool stand-alone mods you could try out later like Portal Stories: Mel and Portal Reloaded :)

It never occurred to me ever that you could do that.
It was always the one bit in Portal I hated, the ONLY thing.

So props to you (pun intended)
A short but sweet experiment of a game!
It would of made a big difference if the developers had Doug Rattmans messages on the wall saying 'hit this tube' or 'break here'.
@@himikebye While it takes more intuition than many other parts of the game, I think that's too big of a cop-out for a game so famous for its subtle way of guiding the player. Maybe have the tube cracked a little bit with gas effects coming out of it to suggest that it can be cracked further.
You manage to find bugs I have never seen, like that Glados deep voice bug it's honestly impressive
If I can: I would highly recommend "Portal: Prelude", which is a fan-made prequel of the first Portal game.
It was made before Valve created Portal 2, but the quality of the mod and story is quite high in my opinion.
Portal: Stories Mel and Portal Reloaded is also very recommended to play after the finishing Portal 2, especially Portal: Stories Mel.

Loved the playthrough, he got the hang of some of the stuff I sucked at and did bad at some things I did good first try. Which emphasizes this game's puzzles can be solved a number of ways which I still discover when playing it. I also liked watching him pick together the pieces of the story together on his own when he did. I think he'll like the second game, that's all I'll say.
