I was a fan of this group when they first came on the scene in the super 70's. CRIME OF THE CENTURY AND BREAKFAST IN AMERICA should be in any true music lovers collection." Supertramp was a very popular band during the 1970s. Their album Breakfast in America sold real well. I am not sure who decided that they were underrated, but they were as tight as a snare drum.
"Breakfast In America" was another big hit from Supertramp. Maybe their biggest. Definitively a great song. Supertramp are music magicians in my opinion, it seems like they could make their music sound like everything with a snap of their fingers.
This is my favorite Supertramp song, too. Beautiful and melancholy. From 1979 . So real for so many at some point in their lives, unfortunately. Love the harmonica. And the vocals/lyrics. “Just Another Nervous Wreck” is another good one, as is “Dreamer.” “Goodbye Stranger,” “The Logical Song,” and many others. Those were the days - unmatched variety, creativity, and quality of songwriting and production. Miss it, dearly.
It's hard for me to understand why some say they were underrated. I was in my 20's and 30's when they were really popular. They were one of my absolute favorite bands back then. It's really great to see someone new appreciating their talent so many decades later. ❤️👍
I think the underrated tag is simply based on the fact that their overall popularity and visibility over time has not been proportional to their quality by comparison to some other groups. I was a Supertramp junkie through teenage and college years but have always been surprised by how many people I have met since who have never heard of them or have heard of them but never got around to listening. And yes they have a whole bunch of songs that make you want to drive around the block one more time to allow it to finish.
Finally, someone who sees it the way it really was and still is ! I guess these people think just because a band does not have a song in the top ten on the charts it makes them underrated lol. Supertramp were never underrated and never will be. They were very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. They were a common household name when it came to good music. Critics at the time considered them to be musical geniuses. The history of the band speaks for itself….hit after hit after hit. The original band members must frown and look dazed and confused when they see fans write that they were underrated. I chuckle every time I see those comments.
I used to get off work at midnight when this song was popular, and whenever it was playing on my drive home I ALWAYS took the long way - it was almost a direct order coming over the airwaves, HAHAHA!
The harmonica part at the beginning gets me everytime! And then, the saxophone joins in towards the middle, and engages in a duel with the harmonica? Ooh...☺️

PS--the older I get, I can't tell you how many times I have taken the long way home. One of those songs I always loved, but truly understand now I am older. Supertramp so awesome. Thanks for the reaction video.
1st period radio in 79, I cut the cellophane open, put Breakfast in America on the turntable. I only took it off to flip it over. Every song, every note! “I’m in this dumb motel, near the Taco Bell, without a hope in hell, I can’t believe that I’m still around”. From “Gone Hollywood” (first song). I WAS HOOKED!
I like to say that this song is defiantly happy. The music is so catchy and bouncy that you're can't be sad listening to it, but the lyrics kinda go against that. And kinda go with it at the same time. "You're the joke of the neighborhood. Why should you care if you're feeling good?" Etc. They run through all these things that could be wrong with your life, but hey, just take some me time, bop to this awesome happy tune, and take the long way home. It'll be okay.
Love you played in the band and have a strong musical background (bring in some jazz reactions!) Supertramp are great musicians. LOVE their music, not surprised you are digging them! For GREAT musicianship you should dig deeper into Genesis and Phil Collins. They have so much to offer (MUCH more that 'I can't Dance'). The more you listen the more you hear. Peter Gabriel too, as he started out with Genesis and Phil.
This is a deep deep rabbit hole as they are one of those bands that don’t really do ‘bad’ tracks at least not in their golden phase between 1974 and 1982. The first two albums are a little patchy as they found their feet as a band but from ‘Crime of the century’ 1974-to ‘Famous last words’ 1982 it’s all pure gold. The first album without Roger Hodgson ,’Brother where you bound’ 1985 is good but something had been lost and the band was definitely at its best with both Rodger and Rick Davies sparking off one another.
Dude, there are so many great Super Tramp songs you have yet to experience. I have to rotate my favorite one because it's too much of a mental struggle to pick just one.......
I'm French, so sorry for my "Frenchglish" i was at the Supertramp concert in Paris, my city in 79/80, I don't remember exactly the date, that was just incredible.
One of my most played albums in the 80's Breakfast in America, when my girls were growing up, they knew all the lyrics and would put on shows they still love it today.
Despite having many Top 10 hits off this album, this was the same year that Pink Floyd's The Wall, AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door (just to name a few) were all released. Personally, as long as I could keep Comfortably Numb, I'd give up The Wall and In Through the Out Door (and Zeppelin is my favorite band, I just like the older stuff more) for Breakfast in America because it really is that good.
I have another Super Tramp VIDEO it's called Hide in your shell watch the live from Paris 1979 you thought Take the long way home was good I bet you will like this one. Rodger Hodgson sings this one. I AM a Super Tramp fan. Paul from Chicago Ridge.
When this song came out it sounded so bizarrely wonderful. I’d never heard anything like it. I don’t know who influenced them, It was so different from anything else.
I've been a Supertramp fan since the early 80's. I know what's coming. I know what's coming and just waiting for your smile ( 2:40 ) and you didn't let me down. You get it...... Enjoy ! oh...and give " Even In The Quietest Moments" album a try. The title track is the first I ever heard from them and that hooked me.
I see a lot of people mentioning a lot of different tracks in the comments... Some that I haven't seen much mention of that are really worth a reaction: "Give a little bit", "Even in the quietest moments", and "Lord is it mine". By the way, I'm always amazed how many people fail to realise that that cover art is the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty! (And yes I always wait until a song ends before I get out of the car!)
Remember they had to compete with Queen, ACDC,Boston,Rolling Stones,Rush,Bob Seger, 38 Special,Foreigner,Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Lynard Skynard, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, CCR, Styx, ELO, Genesis...........I have this Album too!! This is my favorite song of theirs too . Your memories fade but I remember in the 9th and 10th grade in high school band I would play the harmonica part with my clarinet. Great band.
Supertramp was NOT underrated. This album was a MONSTER hit. Everybody owned it. Their songs flooded the airwaves in the 70s. They deserved every hit song they had.
Haven't heard this in so long, it was in heavy rotation on the radio when I was growing up. Still sounds great! I was once on the way home from a road trip and my car mates insisted on driving around the block until the cassette we were listening to was over--and we had just listened to it three times! Talk about taking the long way home! The tape wasn't Supertramp though, it was Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie in concert. 😊 Hope you'll get back to Genesis soon, they've got a huge catalog of hits.
The trouble was…..their songs were long. Back then, “radio” play was 3 minutes. Very few songs over 3-4 minutes got very much play. A few FM stations would play 7+ minute songs and occasionally an album, but not very often. You went out and bought the LP, if you could find it.
A progressive band with impressive musical chops. Breakfast In America was both their greatest hit album (no.1 selling album in the world the year it was released) but it was also it's nadir...
It wasn't that they were "underrated". You've been listening. There were just so many utterly phenomenal bands. Wasn't their fault, we all loved them, we just had so much to choose from.
Aint that the truth.
The quality back then was crazy.

Supertramp was NOT underrated. This album was a MONSTER hit. Everybody owned it. Their songs flooded the airwaves in the 70s. They deserved every hit song they had.
Nice reaction, I have drove around the block or sat in the driveway. Goodbye Stranger, Give a Little bit are your next songs.
You have fantastic reactions and a true appreciation of the music. And. Musicians because of your musical background. You really know your stuff
Supertramp Breakfast in America and The Babys Anthology album spent a lot of time in my cassette player. Haven't heard anyone react to The Babys yet.
Hope you'll get back to Genesis soon, they've got a huge catalog of hits.
The song, " Breakfast in America " is also great....
Man the harmonica has to be one of the best vocalists in this bands history. :D
Great song
I agree with Dan, ELO Electric Light Orchestra Mr Blue Sky banger🎶🎶💕
Awesome 🎵
1979 best year in music !!
We we're spoilt. we had so much outstanding bands to watch and listen too. Yes drive the long way home. some songs you don't want to end.
