Basically after everyone turned to orange juice, Rei let Shinji choose if people could bring themselves back or not.
Asuka and Shinji were to first to come back, but Shinji after everything didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t.

I interpreted the choking as Shinji finally standing up for himself. Through the show he's always meek and does whatever he's told to do without complaining, always searching for approval and love. In the ending, when Asuka sees he's finally standing up for himself, she touches his cheek, to which Shinji inmediatly stops choking her, because he got what he wanted: approval. Ironically, when Shinji stops the symbolic choking, he stops asserting himself, and Asuka responds with a mere "disgusting", because even after all that Shinji still fully depends on the views of others to act for himself.
That's just my interpretation though, I'm sure there's not really a right answer to this.

Honestly, when I first watched evangelion I thought the same about Shinji, partly because i saw myself in him sometimes, but then I realized that me and probably most people wouldn´t do much better than him in such a situation, I mean imagine having a dead mother, being abandoned by your asshole dad, getting called by your dad only for him to use you to pilot a robot to fight 100 story tall monsters and if you refuse, everybody in the world dies, find out that the girl you liked is some weird clone of your dead mother, feeling the same pain that the eva does, which is pretty horrible, being forced to almost kill one of your only friends against your will by none other than your father, killing the only person who you feel that truly loves you by your own hand, and so on and so forth. I feel as if Shinji is justified because of all of this. My boy Shinji really just needs a good ol´ trip to the psychiatrist or something.

      @brendananderson9102 2 года назад +4

Shinji was also raised in isolation for a good chunk of his childhood by Seele. So, there's that. (My theory is that they wanted him to have a fragile character, that way when it came time to exploit him it would be easier. In a flashback of his, he is shown at a playground, but the playground is on scaffolding and there's a stage light on the playground. It was never an actual playground, it was a stage/biome that was made to look like a playground. I bet even the sun was just an effect. So this is the world Shinji has known up until he was probably 10? 11? 12? 13? He did mention having a music teacher, but even that music teacher could have been just a tutor Seele hired. So I'm guessing Shinji only knew this artificial "perfect" world without pain. Which is why he assumes the real world should be that way, when it's not.)

One trivia that I thought was pretty nuts --- the floating Rei at 20:39 looks identical to the Rei that Shinji sees in the very 1st episode of the show, right after we're introduced to Shinji in the phone booth. It feels like a throwaway shot but it begs the question of how Shinji see her there? How did Rei teleport herself to the phone booth and then back to NERV HQ, on a stretcher?
The theory is that Rei achieves god-hood at EoE and transcends the limits of time, and is able to project herself back to the beginning, before it all begins when Shinji boards Unit 01 to replace injured Rei. Perhaps to say hi and bye to him for the last time.

  • @angelicusmortus1484

The choking thing was because he still thought he was in instrumentality. In instrumentality when he chokes her she does nothing. Instrumentality makes everyone experience eachothers feelings, desires, and experiences. Asuka hated that Shinji would never reach out to her when they kissed and he would never comfort her throughout their relationship. Shinji hated that no one loved him nor confirmed their love for him besides Kaworu and he killed him triggering his depression. So when Shinji chokes her he is checking if he is still in instrumentality and over correcting in "reaching out" (thus Lilith asking "what are your hands for?" ) thinking that the loop will continue. Now that Asuka knows that all he ever wanted was what she wanted which was emotional comfort instead of attacking him she caresses his cheek to show him that she understands his hate for her. When he stops choking her and cries she says the infamous "How Disgusting" (romanized japanese= kimochi warui). She says this because she now has all of his experiences in her heart and knows what he did in the hospital while she was in a coma. That is why she makes the comment. You guys had an amazing commentary, extremely funny but if you guys ever have the time you should rewatch it with a new perspective. "Did they hook up?" Unsure, equal chance 'yes' or 'no, those shots are just Freudian'. Amusing note, Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant (the ADV voice actors for Shinji and Asuka) once did an AIDS awareness advertisement together and the audio sounds hilariously like Asuka gave Shinji a STD.
That whole sequence is a consequence of Shinji and Asuka both having feelings fr each other, but their traumas pushing them apart.
And yup, that's where the meme comes from.
    And cue the song!
Isn't it chilling that Gendo is basically a grown up Shinji?
Some folks believe the bite was a painful introduction to Gendo's Instrumentality, others believe it was him being barred from the collective mind.
I had a good laugh at the Christmas Reis comment. Well played, guys, well played.
The three women in the IRL sequence are Misato, Rei & Auska's voice actresses.
Shinji's words to his mother basically mean, he doesn't know where to find his happiness, but he now believes he can try. That's it's not just futile.
It's widely believed that Shinji choked Auska to confirm they were back in reality, because in Instrumentality nothing 'bad' was allowed to happen. Meanwhile for Asuka she woke up to find the Completionist straddling her with his hands around her throat.
So, in the final tally: Shinji and Asuka are alive, but the rest of humanity can return if they wish to. Lillith is dead and Lillith's clone is out in space along with the Lance of Longinus so no one can invoke another Impact. The returning human race need to be able to live and eat so there must be some way to reverse the red seas etc. All in all, this is a happy ending even if in a really weird roundabout way.
Thanks for reacting to this one, it was great watching you guys laugh and WTF through it all.
The fourth and final of the Rebuild movies comes out late June in Japan so probably 3 months or so after that before it comes out in the west, so if you want to knock them all out at once (1.11, 2.22, 3.33 & 3.0 + 1.0) you'll probably have till September-ish. My take on the Asuka strangulation scene was that seeing Asuka reminded Shinji of all the traumatic events which took place and so he reflexively tried to kill her in order to metaphorically remove those memories. Also, Asuka was cold to him most of the time throughout the series, despite it betraying her actual feelings for him, so perhaps he was overcome with a momentary surge of anger upon seeing her?
As for why I think Shinji stopped strangling Asuka when she placed her hand on his cheek is because it reminded him of his mother's warmth from during instrumentation when Shinji's mum placed her hand on his cheek just like Asuka did. This triggered back the memory of the conversation he had with his mum during instrumentation where his mum asks him, "Will you be alright?" and Shinji replies by saying he will try to find true happiness and the meaning of life, the meaning of him being in this world. So then he decides to embrace his past and strive to keep living in the pursuit of happiness, hence why he stops strangling Asuka. The more simple, alternate explanation is that Shinji was simply brought back to his senses when Asuka touched him but I prefer the former due to its poetic connotations lol.

  • @LucreciaCrescentIsBestGirl
    @LucreciaCrescentIsBestGirl Год назад +11

Fun fact: the Japanese version of Asuka’s final line was “Kimochi warui,” which can translate to either “disgusting” or “I feel sick.”
There are a few theories about what the feeing sick means. The simple one is that she is just sickened by Shinji/what just happened.
The other theory is that it is in reference to morning sickness. The implications of that one can be inferred from there.

a bit late, but a little explanation, asuka was so disgusted by shinji, she rejected intsrumentality because shinji was in the sea of LCL with her. Gendo was absorbed into the LCL like everyone else, his transition was a lot more violent than everyone else's because even though he sought instrumentality, no one in the series put up more walls between himself and everyone else. He had the strongest AT field of anyone else in the series, so to break his AT field, the anti AT field's reaction to him had to be extremely violent, breaking him mentally and physically by making him face the truth about himself from Yui and Rei.

Shinji was chosen to decide which all human-beings turn into the one as lcl(orange juice) or keep going on the same way as individuals. Becoming the one means there is no rejection from others which Shinji was really afraid of, but no affection from others either. Living as an individual means a person can be loved by others, but also be hated. Shinji chosen the later one, so he was alive while everyone but Asuka turned lcl. At last, Asuka was also on the beach as well with keeping her body, because she's desired not to be with Shinji together as lcl, as the one. She's desired so cuz she's really loved Shinji and wanted to stand by Shinji as a different individual, as an other for Shinji, rather than being just the one. That's why she didn't resist Shinji's choking at all. Shinji choked her because he's extremely afraid Asuka, who is the only person on the earth except Shinji, will reject him and being alone. But he noticed her love with her hand on his cheek and started crying with relief. Finally, the word by Asuka, "pathetic" or "disgusting" was just her honest feeling towards Shinji's emotional instability or the paradox he's holding in mind.

I’m pretty sure that this movie is just what was intended to be in the original series but I think that it was either budget or time constraints that made the original last 2 episodes seem rushed. The creator of the series had this movie made to act as a substitute for the last 2 episodes, not actually to be between or after the 2 last episodes of the series. In the context of the End of Evangelion movie, the last 2 episodes did not happen and this all takes places after episode 24 of the series. It is pretty annoying that it is so hard to get ahold of this information and it’s why so many people are left confused at the end of the series. I actually thought the exact same thing, that this movie took place between episode 24 and 25 of the series, but after talking to some people that know a lot more about the situation that the studio was in at the time of the end of the original series, it became a bit more clear.

Just in case yall still check the comments here, I'll leave my own observation, though the ending is probably supposed to be interpreted however the individual viewer wants (kind of fits with the what I'll call "be yourself" narrative). First - During the fight against the Mass Production Evas, Shinji DID try to help Asuka (90% sure at least). The thing was, all that red stuff around it prevented him from getting into the entry plug. So he just sits there while Auska gets torn apart, listening to it and dying inside. Now here's for the real fucked up part of this. His mom is inside Unit 01 to some degree. "Ok, but why does that matter?" 01/Yui only broke out of the seal AFTER Asuka died. Regardless of the reason (and there are several theories as to why she waited- none of them good) his mom purposefully waited until she kicked the bucket to break free, knowing that her son could hear the horrible sounds and that he wasn't running away. So one of the first times he tries to help someone out of his own volition, he's way, WAY too late.
Second, the whole Asuka-Shinji dynamic is really tragic. She takes a liking to him, and in an effort to get him to reciprocate, kisses him. He was...wholly unenthusiastic about that, which was a huge blow to her pride...and all she lives for is to be the best. If she has no pride in herself, she can't be the best, and therefore has no reason to exist. This gets worse after the whole sync rate debacle, and culminates in the battle against the mind angel. Their whole dynamic would be really typical- Asuka is probably just a normal tsundere, albeit with massive trauma from HER mother and father- if Shinji hadn't been abandoned by his father and developed negative self-confidence, they might have gotten closer in time. As it were, her normal tsundere behavior ended up hurting him quite badly even though they shared a mutual (romantic?) interest. Her behavior pushes him away because he thinks she truly hates him, though she doesn't really know how to express herself any differently. Cue her confusion when Shinji gets alienated-she doesn't know she's hurting him. She then gets more scathing and the cycle continues. More detail on the kiss scene- she treated it like a game so that he couldn't truly reject her. When she kisses him, he does nothing back, and she acts disgusted to cover her feelings up, as she thought he rejected her. Guess what- he does like her, and this leads him to having even LESS self confidence and contributes to Asuka's breakdown.
All that to say that there are different ways of interpreting it, and while Shinji is pretty "Why did you do that" at times, I can actually sympathize with him. I mean, he's fourteen for god's sake, and one day the dad that has never called to him before is like "Hey son, get in this robot to save the world! If you fail once, the world dies. No pressure tho, and by the way, I'm going to say three words to you in the entire show! Now go have fun!"
This ballooned beyond how long I intended it to be, and very few people will probably read it, but hey, just wanted to offer my take. If anyone does read to the end though, thanks!

The best explanation I can come up with for the last scene (after watching this movie like 10x) is that Shinji is still just so desperate and afraid of being ignored that him choking Asuka is still just him trying to force her to pay attention to him. I think some people are in denial about Shinji being abusive and try to overthink it, but that's the only explanation I have that makes sense to me.
As much as I love Eva, I think the ending is kind of bad (but in a cool way I guess). Thematically, Eva is basically about NEETs and anime nerds needing to grow up, go outside, meet people, maybe attend group therapy, etc. but it seems so pessimistic about the prospect of that actually leading to happiness. It's the last anime you'd want to have a try-hard edgy ending but how could it not?

The same way that we guys are separated from reality by watching people in a fantasy (them characters in the movie), the people in the movie are separated from reality by also watching people in a fantasy (us movie watchers, or Evangelion fans). In the NGE universe, there was an ancestral race which was faced with its end, so they send out "seeds of life" to spread their descendants to specified planets across the galaxy. Each of those seeds had the soul of one of those members of the ancestral race which was inside a vessel called "moon" as well as a "Lance of Longinus" which was to control and incapacitate the seed.
Each selected planet should have one and only one of those seeds.
Unfortunately, Earth was the home of two seeds through an accident. One is the "Fruit of Life", or Adam and Angels and the Other one is the "Fruit of Knowledge, Lilith and the Humans.
The first seed (Adam) crashed on earth in Antarctica while the second (Lilith) crashed in the Japan region. Lilith’s Spear was lost/destroyed and since the Rule was that only one seed can be active on a single planet, the spear made Adam go dormant. The Angels were created by Adam.
The Crash of Lilith on Earth was called the "First Impact". Humanity was eventually born and evolved from Lilith.
In the Katsuragi Expedition Adam (the one Misato witnessed) was awakened which resulted in the Second Impact.
In short, SEELE is trying to create the Human Instrumentality to create the third impact so that all of Lilith souls merge into an "egg" and merging with each other so that Humanity can evolve as well as completely eradicate human conflict so that the faults of one person are compensated by the strengths of the other person.
At the end of the series and in The End of Evangelion Shinji is going through Human Instrumentality. Basically, everyone becomes one in body and soul and turns into LCL that’s made from Lilith, but Shinji rejects it because he decides that being an individual that experiences both happiness and pain is necessary. Shinji's been running away from pain all his life and only wants to accept happiness but finally accepts both in the end.
The second Impact was actually started by inserting human DNA into Adam and naturally that didn't go so well.
If you're confused about what are the Evangelions well...
Evangelions are living artificial humans of near-godlike power. They are present in nearly every single franchise entry, although their functionality and role can vary greatly depending on the story being told. Originally created by Gehirn and further developed by NERV under the supervision of SEELE, the Evangelion are born from samples of the very first Angel, Adam, with the exception of Evangelion Unit-01, which was created from the second angel, Lilith. While the Evangelion were supposedly created to combat the Angel threat, their most important functions, and one of their greatest secrets, is to initiate Third Impact to evolve humanity further. Unit-01 has the soul of Shinji's mother and Unit-02 has part of the soul of Asuka's mother.

He goes a rant about how some things haven't be resolved and don't make sense, and questions how he will get home. It goes on to him wondering where to run away, hoping the movie will make up for this, and says that the creators ran out of ink. You can watch this scene in a video on youtube if you like to, as well as another youtube video that does an animatic of Shinji ranting these things!

When you think that Komm, süßer Todi s a happy song cus of the music. xD The lyrics are literally about someone about to kill them self. The name translated into English is come sweet death.

Look up the lyrics of the song, it's not a happy song, it's a song of regret and acceptance (also many of the concepts shown here need strong religious knowledge both in Christianity and Judaism to understand(That and the creator's depression))

If you know who Slaneesh is, then this in my opinion is a good reminder of how The Dark prince of pain and joy was born.
(I'm talking about when rai becomes Lilith and the third impact happens in this movie) :)

Honestly it’s refreshing to see people with open minds watch this and remind everyone how fucking weird this movie actually is. It’s like everyone’s either in the “intellectual” circle jerk talking about how great it is or they go on a two hour rant talking about how they hate it. Well, in any case, this movie helped me understand myself and my emotions when I was a depressed teen, but looking back on it the movie does feel very “incel” pandering as an adult. Well, have fun trying to wrap your heads around whatever the fuck this movie is because I sure did.

Thanks so much! Glad the movie helped you as a teen, and it was def a weird one. We'll return with more EVA content in the future.

    Welp, basically all the spoilers:
EVA-1 has the soul of Shinji's mom in it. That's why Shinji was able to pilot EVA-1 at all. Those times where Shinji went Ultra instinct? Nah, that was Yui Ikari, Hell hath no rage like Mom in combat boots. She kicked the first angels ass because her son was afraid, tore the second one to shreds from the inside out because he was afraid, and she literally ate the heart (They call it an S2 engine, basically the Angels power source.) of the next one so she'd never run out of power and be unable to protect her son again.
Rei merged with Lillith, and became the Angel of Death, a nascent new God being born, humanities epoch, maybe all three. She takes the Tree of Life, Shinji's breaking sanity combined with the power of the Lance of Longinus and the Mass produced EVAs into herself. She breaks the AT fields (An AT field btw, is an Absolute Terror Field, and the literal weaponized 'walls' we put up against other people and our own emotions.) of everyone down using Shinji's fear of being alone, so everyone turns into LCL fluid, so that everyone can merge with everyone, humanity can all become one collective consciousness, nobody ever has to be alone ever again, and everyone's soul goes into that vessel that was the Geofront. Basically the egg that will rebirth humanity. Rei talks to Shinji for the last time.
She offers him the chance to never be alone again... But he decides through introspection that maybe the barriers between people are a good thing, because the trust that bridges them is what makes us human.
    And EVA-1 hears him.
And tears that imitation Gods head off. She rips her way free of Rei/Lilith's eye, because her SON WANTS TO LIVE. With a cosmically massive roar, she burns all of the power she has in her, as angelic wings of fire encircle the world. She derails the literal Death and Rebirth of humanity, the birth of a God, the Apocalypse, because her son wants the chance to be happy. In this moment, she holds the power, of everything. With contemptuous ease, she shatters the imitation Lances of Longinus, and burns the mass produced EVAs, her pale shadows, into the void so they can never be used like this again. She shatters the vessel, releasing the souls of humanity into the sea of LCL. Those with the will to survive, will reform. Humanity will survive.
And she gets to talk to her son one last time, as EVA-1's power fades, and the machine vessel of a newborn god slowly turns to ashes, one of the Angels of Death, the Reis, a missing piece of Yui's soul coming home, or EVA-1s escort into the afterlife.
I know the Dub is different, on Netflix. But her words to her son in the original are some of the most hopeful, inspiring words I've ever heard, and it brings me to tears just typing them.
“Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy. As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be all right.”
She gets to touch her son one last time as EVA-1 dies, and she falls into the blackness. She asks if he'll be alright.
And EVA-1, Yui Ikari, sacrifices the power of Gods, her immortality, the power of the Lance of Longinus, Lilith, the Angels, all the blood, the terror, the effort, everything that brought her here, and ultimately, Herself, as EVA-1 dies, taking the Lance with her into the infinite void...
Just so Shinji might be happy one day. The ultimate proof that her mother loves him.
In summary: Shinji's Mother, is the baddest ass mother who ever lived.

asuka has said before "I'd rather die than be left alone with you". Not sure why Shinji decided to choke her in the first place, but she was happy he was killing her. That's why she only caressed his face and didn't stop him. But then when he started crying and stopped choking her, she stared blankly in disbelief. After all that, Shinji didn't have what it takes to at least give Asuka one last kindness. That's why she looked at him and said
    "Disgusting"

This movie is all about despair, it never gives the viewer confort. It's fitting since this movie was a response to the haters that harassed the creator of NGE for the hopeful TV ending

The music is actually really depressing. It's a celebratory song about suicide. The singer thinking everything would be much better if they died. That's why it sounds happy but isnt. It also fits shinji cause hes suicidal.
