”I hope I'm mentally and emotionally prepared for this”
*hospital scene starts playing*
💀💀💀💀🎉😂
I feel so bad for laughing on Josh in that part. That scene slap him hard
Hahah totally
I've hear this a billion times AND IT STILL FUCKS ME UP
the reason why misato kissed shinji is actually pretty sad, we learnt from her relationship with kaji and how that connected with her need for male affection which comes from losing her father that sex is pretty much the only way she knows how to show affection with men, in her mind that's all she can do to have an intimate moment with shinji
She offered to kiss/fuck Shinji after Rei self-destructed fighting the 16th Angel as well, but Shinji rejected her.
Yeah everyone in this show carries heavy burdens… That’s kinda the point
In my opinion, that kiss is full of love, no matter what kind of love
And just wound up making everything worse. Because Shinji isn't stupid. He knew what Misato was doing and why. And it only helped to lead to the anger that eventually convinced Shinji to let 3rd Impact
Lust and affection is not that well versed among North Americans to be fair with you.
They won't correlate it with connecting with someone, but just a thing you do that's deemed a sin.
nothing could have ever prepared you for this movie. your reaction is genuine and valid
They need to see the new movies with the final history
Your mom is valid.
This is a classic misconception, Shinji didn't help Asuka when she needed him the most not because he didn't want to, it's because the eva 01 was covered in solid baquelite, it was humanly impossible for him to enter the eva until it freed itself
That's just a excuse my bro, i love my boy shinji, but he didn't even try to climb the eva xd
He did help her in the manga tho, and Unit 1 was trapped in manga as well.
@@Troll29xD he would’ve helped if he could, he did in the manga when he was able too
@@wzx6x6z6w manga is different from the anime tv and movie tho manga can be called as non-canon but multiverse exists soo
@@Troll29xD nah the OP commenter is right
Mehgan's face when the hospital scene begins is the definition of trauma repressed memories 😂
Priceless 😂
Shinji legitimately could not help Asuka. The Eva was stuck so he basically just had to sit there and listen to everyone beg him to help while he couldn’t do anything
People not understanding Evangelion's characters for what they actually are makes my brain hurt
It's more like they just understood them in a surface level.
What else expect of americans
I think they understood them fine. Most people understand the characters less. Especially on first viewing. I think the Misato part is the only I can think of which is very commonly misunderstood.
@@BlowAway cope. Americans are objectively better.
fact
The way I interpreted Misato kissing Shinji is that she was minutes away from death and just wanted him to get in the EVA. She had tried forcing him she had tried convincing him and in her last minute the absolute last card she had to play was her sexuality. She didn’t want him or anything she just tried to dangle what most boys want in a last ditch effort to get him to do what he needs to do.
Sorta showing the absolute state of screwed everything had become.
The hospital scene I took as the creators warning sign. Like “ok this is here in the first couple minutes and if you can’t handle it please leave now this movie isn’t for you”
Bingo that's my take as well. We debated this in my old EVANGELION forum decades ago and I believe most of us agreed that this explanation made sense to use.
That kiss was so much more than that
I always understood this kiss as a farewell message meaning "now you're a man, Shinji".
Yeah no, it was definitely an insight into her inability to show any affection to a male figure beside sexual
That's not why she did it at all. It's been shown throughout the whole friggin series that Misato is only able to show affection through sex. So when she tried to show Shinji that she does indeed care for him the only way she was able to do it... is by kissing him.
50:06 actually started laughing out loud when Josh came on the screen to explain his visceral reaction to the ending of Eva. It’s ok Josh everybody who loves this series will understand the reaction.
He actually had a more normal reaction than I had. I had a freaking meltdown 😅
Huh?
I stand by Shinji. That being said I really prefer the movie's ending
I personally don't think Shinji would have been able to get back on track the way he did in the last episodes by himself, in my opinion the movie shows the realistic scenario where he simply hits rock bottom but even through all that he is still able to make the choice for humanity to live, not because he has grown like in 24 and 25, but because he is willing to.
He hits rock bottom and yet makes this decision for himself to give him the room to finally accept himself and grow despite everything that is against him in this movie.
I always had faith in him
It’s very sad too because people might even relate to him like me
He's always at rock bottom 🙄 he's a waste of space
@@Leviathan762-zh4lqok power of friendship guy
In essence they are both the same ending. I personally believe they both take place around the same time. EOE is just angrier and more in your face because of the reception to the shows ending. This is Anno really hammering it home what the point of the series was. As for Shinji, a lot of his manic unhinged behaviour makes complete sense in context with the series. Remember Shinji was 14 and being trained to kill, he was already mentally fucked and shit just kept getting worse and worse and by the end of the series he had just killed someone he cared about. If you want a better example that’s been hinted since the beginning, Shinji was becoming like Gendo. But despite everything, he managed to do the right thing and decide that living is worth it even if it meant pain and hardship. That’s why it ends the way it does. Shinji did something awful to Asuka and now he has to live with it. A lot of people like to say EOE is depressing, and it is, but it still ultimately has that final point of “Life sucks, depression is awful, the world is painful, but living is worth it.”
Anno was also really angry at the fanbase after they sent him threatening letters over the original ending. This whole film is basically Annos revenge
@@jesusleyva4386 I'm glad he did this ending though. I needed this "in your face" to truly accept the ending.
Right thing?
@@DubiousFIN “Right thing” in the context of choosing to exist despite the hardships of life instead of dooming the world out of selfishness. Don’t really know how I didn’t make that obvious. I even said his hospital “endeavours” were awful and inexcusable and now he has to live with them.
@@jesusleyva4386 this is a myth, it's been disproven multiple times. Anno always wanted to make this ending, he also always wanted to make the other ending. If he'd had the budget and time, the two would be one in the same.
It's a stupid theory anyway. What, Anno was receiving death threats from Eva fans so in retaliation, he made a high budget arthouse masterpiece that they would love? Really?
thing is SHINJI is strongest of all...even after all the trauma he went through he rejected intrumentality even Gendo and Seele couldn't...

@@darshin95GOAT fr
Have you heard about the scrapped alternative endings?
One was shinji on the shore, holding Asuka’s hand. It pans up to show *only* Asuka’s arm there.
It turned out Shinji was the only person, out of all of humanity, who was able to see himself within the walls of his own heart.
I actually would’ve liked this ending as well, id like to think anyways.
Shut up 🙄
cus shinji is that guy
"Come sweet death" is the most upbeat song about suicide I've ever heard
One of the interpretations that make it somewhat coherent is that episodes 25-26 are what happens in Shinji's head while the instrumentality is happening. The conclusion he came to in the end of the 26th ep is what made him reject the instrumentality and come back to the real world
That's not a very satisfying explanation. The show's ending and this one are two seperate possibilities. The two different portrayals of Shinji are night and day.
@@timrosswood4259if we include the rebuilds these are just 2 iterations of the instrumentality that could happen right?
Eoe and series end are different and not connected in Eoe the instrumentality is stopped while in series it isnt (the real eva is instrumentality which is basically facing the reality accept who You are seeing life as worth living no matter the hardships)
If I remember correctly the subtitles in "that scene" were "I'm so fucked up" which I thought was much more properly candid than "I'm the lowest of the low"
That's what Shinji says in the ADV dub, but in Japanese he says "Saiteida ore tte." which translates to "I'm the worst".
I think the ADV dub is more realistic English way to convey the meaning, but the Netflix dub is a more literal translation.
"i hope... i am mentally and emotionally prepared for this."
Oh boy..
It's been a joy watching you two experience the twists and turns and theorize after each episode. Josh's guesses throughout were amazingly close!
NGE has been my absolute favourite piece of media since I watched it first when I was 16. Back then I was suffering from a deep bout of depression, and this series and its messages were a key part of bringing me out of that slump (after it temporarily sent me deeper down the spiral...). Several moments have become touchstones for me in my struggles with mental health over the years. There are just no shortage of very life-affirming messages here.
I've always viewed End of Evangelion as being totally compatible with episodes 25 + 26. The same ending from different perspectives, two sides of the same coin (I loved how much both of you enjoyed the TV ending btw, so many people hate them because they drop the story elements, not realizing the the main characters personal struggles ARE the story). But the whole series is wonderfully open to interpretation, and EoE especially is such a raw, visceral and "in your face" piece of media I don't think there's any wrong reaction towards it. Joy, relief, sadness, confusion, frustration, anger, despair or even disgust are all very valid feelings to have after finishing this movie.
I could talk about this anime for hours, but will keep this concise. Thank you both so much for these reactions! ❤They're the best out there for NGE so far!
Great reactions. Josh was exactly like how I was after my first watch of the series and movies. Mehgan is me after my years of processing it. I love Mehgan's expressions when something WE knew what was coming up and watching Josh reacting.
I'm sure Josh spent the rest of the day questioning his existence... 10/10 movie!
Well you're reaction is perfectly fine after this INSANE MOVIE! it's crazy how the world ends. There's a rumor that Hideaki Anno (the creator and the brain behind this Master piece) prefers the 25/26 chapters ending, because he projects a better ending, a joyful ending, an optimistic one, a bit rushy and fast for a therapy but is great. After finishing the series, many fans were so upset with this finally, writing notes and letters for him, vandalize his apartment and the studio, etc etc. The point is that END OF EVANGELION is the final that ppl request but is BRUTAL, sad, cruel and an anxiously one, a worst scenario that Hideaki thinks the toxic fans deserves. It's just a rumor but it is known. Great video. No matter what this is one of my fav movies all time. But the rebuilds... Oh gosh U HAVE TO WATCH IT 😊greetings from Peru LatinoAmerica
Not fully a rumor he stated in an interview that online Otaku talked about kidnapping and murdering him. He was already depressed and thought about taking his life. Thankfully others helped him get back on his feet. End of Evangelion was already going to be dark, but that episode convinced him to go harder on the depression angle of the film.
I just rewatched the movie and I feel that the crazy dependant, toxic, violent Shinji we see represents the fandom. It's obvious the reaction to the show influenced the movie. I definitely prefer the how's ending. The first half of the. movie is great but it looses me in the second half. I prefer the psychological breakdown of the characters in the show to Shinji representing a toxic fan, which almost comes across as character assassination. The ending goes on for so long and still is less interesting than the show to be honest. I am still wondering what the significance of Shinji strangling Asuka on the beach is, though. I've never looked it up or watched the new movies, and still after 20+ years I don't know what to make of it.
@@Renoistic I know you didn’t ask, but I’d like to offer my take on the last scene. Most people I’ve discussed it with chalk it up to Shinji strangling Asuka because that’s the last thing he remembered from instrumentality. I think that oversimplifies it honestly.
What we see both characters do in that final scene is the opposite of what we’ve seen them portrayed in the series.
Shinji, this passive and nice boy is taking a violent and aggressive action.
Asuka, who we’ve seen to be an angry and aggressive girl, is taking a gentle and loving action.
Both of them are now finally able to express themselves truly outside of instrumentality for one brief moment. The tragic irony is that if they’d been able to do this earlier, they’d have saved themselves a lot of torment.
If Asuka would have allowed herself to show affection and feel love, her downward spiral could have been avoided. By that same token, if Shinji had allowed himself to be more aggressive and assertive, he probably could have avoided being a doormat for NERV, or saved Toji/Asuka from their fates in true anime hero fashion.
Our two lead characters have finally reached an understanding, and all it cost them was everything.
@@Renoistic I'd really recommend watching the new movies, especially if you enjoyed the final two episodes. The movies are much closer in tone to that ending overall, and they also hint that all of the Evangelion show and movies (original show, EoE, and the Rebuilds) are all semi-'canon', and different timelines of the same thing happening over and over (rather than EoE being canon to the show and the rebuilds being a seperate remake). All on Amazon Prime video with good subs, so much easier to get ahold of than some of the other Evangelion stuff.
ur immediate feelings after the movie is what 99% of ppl felt after watching. ppl complaining ab others not getting it in the first watch most likely also didnt get it their first time, took them multiple watches, reading/waching breakdowns of the movie etc. to form their opinion but m then expect others to get it in their first watch as well
you're absolutely right.
It’s so funny seeing someone watch the hospital scene for the 1st time lol
この映画には「アニメばかり観てないで現実を見ろ」という監督からのメッセージが込められています。
Don't know if you can read this but, I have a theory that one thing that's very important for The End of Evangelion and the Rebuild movies is the fact that these movies were Hideaki running away from reality by imagining this fantastic world of angels, giant robots etc... But the end of theses movies are him basically turning back to reality again. What do you think?
When I was 14-ish, I had a struggle with depression that lasted a few years. It was hard and molded me in a lot of ways that I am grateful for and a lot of ways I will never truly feel content about.
It wasn't until I did a lot of work on my life and started therapy and found my passion for music that I started to really move on.
But before all of that, everything was a struggle. My actual life; what I cared about, how I spent my time; it wasn't ever really "bad". From the outside, you wouldn't think it'd be something that'd cause depression.
And yet the depression was there.
When I was going through it, I'd have the lows of apathy and wallowing in my pain. I'd think "no one in your life actually likes you. You're just a whiny, self-absorbed, weak waste of space. You could be so much more. You've been given so much. And you waste it all."
Looking back, I feel two things. One, it's almost funny how dramatic teen me was. And two? It is a miracle I didn't hurt myself and the fact that I survived all of that is something to be proud of.
Here's the thing, though. Those thoughts are like radioactive waste sitting in your brain. They fuck EVERYTHING up. It infects your self-perception, your view of other people and completely hijacks your emotions. It's ugly and nearly impossible to contain.
But while I was in the midst of all this, it created a cycle of hopelessness and vitality. I'd be fighting to focus on the good in my life (mainly my friends) and try to convince myself the good made the bad worth it.
But after the "win", after going through that mental process of weighing my indifference and pain against my joy and my desire to be a part of the world, eventually... the depression would come back. And in a single moment it would feel like all the struggle and all the convincing and all the joy was for nothing.
Eva is the show that I think depicts this type of issue the best.
Shinji is incredibly unlikable. Because that's what someone who hates themselves looks like. I know because I was in his shoes.
Granted, my real problems and responses to them were never at that point that Shinji was, but the mindset was there.
Edit 1: I want to add on to this because I feel like I didn't state my main point. And my main point is this: we like to think of mental health issues in a very 2-dimensional way. That eventually, you get the "win". in EVA's case, that's the last two episodes of the series. The moment of realization where you finally escape those toxic thoughts.
But here's the thing. This is a systematic issue for most people. Self-loathing leas into nearly every thought and every action you take. It is a lense though which you see the world. Stare though it long enough, it becomes your default image. Then, when you "remove" the lense, you don't even need it anymore. Those patterns of thought you developed will paint over your perceptions for you. It translates automatically.
Humans will always go with the more familiar option. Because we know that what's familiar is what's survivable. It doesn't matter if it's unbearable. We trust it anyways.
So when you try to take on a completely different way of looking at the world it puts you in an incredibly vulnerable situation. And a sad, but natural reaction to that is to retreat. Back to what's familiar, to what's "safe".
For Shinji, that is rejection of anything intimate or emotionally real.
Change is hard. And the road to recovery is riddled with setbacks and relapse. It's hard and it ain't pretty
As someone who also struggles with depression, you nailed it. Shinji is a textbook example of a teenager with major depression disorder, and I hate how relatable he was to me at that age.
First of thnks for sharing your personal trauma and story. I am glad you recovered and I sincerly pray that you continue win the never ending battle that is psychological trauma. It takes courage to look at yourself see the patterns, acknowledge the trauma as something you can overcome, and do something about it. That is exactly what this show is about. Its an in depth analysis of the current human condition, psychological trauma, how these traumas manifest through relationships, and what we can do about them. Shinji is the ultimate representation of child inside all of us that is overwhelmed with the burden of living through these traumas and the inability we feel to not let them crush us with the weight of the pain we endure. You are absolutely right in that overcoming these things is a daily struggle that takes a long time to reprogram. People who havent experienced it don't understand and can be harsh with their judgements in their ingorance. Dont take things personally. Keep focused on your own growth and do your best.
Thank you for this, it is the same for me I've been struggling with depression for a while now, it's really sad that people don't understand that shinji is the perfect example of someone depressed and that is the key to understanding his character
You guys are going to be zonked when you learn the the consensus of the online community is that 25&26 and End of Eva are the same ending, the show is just happening inside instrumentality with everyones souls talking to each other. Those events are why Shinji ultimately chooses to let people return to physical form.
Absolutely loved this reaction! Your NGE journey has been such a treat! This series means so much to me, especially this movie. I was introduced to NGE by The End of Evangelion. Never seen an episode, but some friends rented EoE and thought it would be a great idea to watch it with no knowledge of the series whatsoever.
That was...many years ago. NGE has become one of my favorite anime series of all time. It resonated so much with me when I was younger, and in all new ways as an adult. I cannot wait for your reaction to the Rebuild series! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
I found your channel through these EVA videos and have really enjoyed them. I felt very similar to you upon my initial viewing of EOE. I watched the series during a very difficult time in my life and found the ending to be very uplifting. It gave me some answers I was searching for with my own issues. Then I watched EOE immediately after and was left even more devastated and depressed then I’d been before haha. Time and contemplation helped me make peace with EOE but I still found it nihilistic and sad, though beautiful. Then I watched the rebuilds and I really loved and found peace in the ending to 3.0+1.0, unlike most it seems. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to that eventually. Evangelion is one of the most profound works of art I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience. I love it so much. It’s been cool watching you experience it. Keep up the great work.
@Cosmic Ghidorah Same. I can’t even hear that “One Last Kiss” song from the ending without tearing up. It was so wonderful to see Shinji finally get that resolution to his story. The way that they tied it in to all the iterations of Eva was masterful and satisfying. Loved it.
"I hope I'm mentally, and emotionally prepared for this"
I don't think that's possible with this movie lol, it's a guaranteed trip
We have a better understanding of Evangelion when we understand that Misato is a Second Impact survivor and that her communication skills are actually as poor as Gendo and Shinji's and that she hides her mental defects with a manic, social persona
Glad to see a channel give this show the attention it deserves. Loved these reactions. You guys should consider reacting to the rebuild movies. Not as amazing as the series but it’s a breathe of fresh air as far as the ending. Much love from Texas !!
Misato kisses shinji because she hopes the prospect of sex will motivate shinji to fight. Yall were talking so you didnt hear her say "when you get back we'll do the real thing". She does that because she uses sex as a crutch and thats all she really knows so she thinks it will work on shinji. Also its the end of the world so she doesnt really care about making out with a 14 year old if it means he'll save the world. Shes also about to die she was mortaly wounded and coughing up blood. (We see shinji wipe blood from his mouth after the kiss.) Also also its japan so its not that weird to them
Perfectly clear storytelling wasted on these two idiots
Episodes 25 and 26 are part of the movie, that is. All that mental question and existential crisis that Shinji and the other characters have happen at the moment in which the human instrumentalization project is executed.
No one is ever emotionally or mentally prepared for this movie...
Edit: the fact Shinji says "I don't want to do anything, I want to die" followed by Asuka saying "I don't wanna die" time and time again is very interesting, it shows how they can be so different yet two sides of the same coin. It's rooted in their perception of themselves and how they are both incomplete as people.
Acho que mostra como duas pessoas deprimidas podem reagir de forma diferente dependendo da situação. Também mostra como a Asuka que queria viver fez de tudo pra continuar viva e morreu, e o shinji que não queria mais ficou vivo.
This one rattled my cage. I'm glad I didn't watch it as a kid cause it probably would have messed me up. Can't wait for your thoughts on the Rebuilds
Fun fact: The Animation team Actually wanted to use 'Hey jude' from Beatles in the Orange Juice scene, But they Don't have THAT much money to buy Copyright of 'Hey jude', so they made 'Komm, süsser Tod!'. If you hearing both music, You'll notice these two songs are quite similar.
LITERLALY JUST TODAY I WAS WONDERINF WHY IT SOUNDED SO FAMILIAR.
The "na na na na" part and the build up to it sound so familiar to the "tumbling down" parts and their build up
I think it's not about if you still like him or not. I understand it like that's how a "hero" or at least a character so to say everyone can end up. You may overcome your problems or just don't.
But still, shinji gave everyone the chance to come back to life. That was his deepest wish, even though he clearly lost himself.
Series ending showed what's happening in Shinji's mind. EOE showed what's physically happening in the world. It's the same ending.
Evangelion is complex but today you can find everything on the wikia.
9:18 "is this man going to get into an eva? Nobody wants to see that"
Looks over at 3.0+1.0: 😬
When I first watched this anime my brain was broken for like 3 weeks.
Me too
I had a meltdown 😅
Damn he even went out of his way to edit himself in saying "THIS IS A BLIND REACTION THIS IS JUST MY FIRST IMPRESSION" and some commenters still be like 🤓 uhm you didnt catch this intentionally very brief detail? 🤓 you didnt develop a complex understanding of intentionally complicated characters? 🤓 i spent half my life thinking about this one anime and you dont get it like i do???? 🤓
Let's Gooooooooooooo
Let's Fucking Gooooooooooooo
This show made me feel and think about a lot of things. It made me ask questions of myself that I might not have been prepared for, but I feel like I'm better off for having thought about them.
I watched end of evangelion for the first time ever in theaters with my nephew last month, and to this day im still traumatized
Well, it's a theory that 25/26 is what is happening inside Shinji's head during Instrumentality...
And the End of Eva is what is happening to everyone else, outside his mind.
Son los mejores reaccionando definitivamente , sintieron lo que miles de fans sentimos cuando lo vimos en pantalla grande . Muchos sentimientos . Sigan con las otras películas !!!
When I was younger, I liked the ending of this movie better. The third impact, action, violence, the ritual... Now, more than 10 years later, I prefer the ending of the anime. The clapping scene, despite being cringe, is beautiful for the journey that Shinji (and anyone with depression) has gone through.
In addition: As the fans at the time didn't like the ending of the anime and made hate speech towards the author, the movie was a response to the fans. That's why Shinji's actions are violent and mischaracterized, because they are the fans violating the author (Asuka).
Hate speech? Try death threats.
Também gosto mais do final do anime agora que assisti de novo e depois de fica deprimido um tempo. A cena que todo mundo da parabens pra ele é bem mais emocionante do que parece.
19:33 Promise me you'll stay alive Misato HAHAHA
Don't feel so bad that your first impressions where not super positive. Back in the day most people, in communities I was in at least, hated the movie. I am sure this will be said a bunch but one of the theories I liked for the last scene with Asuka and Shinji is that after experiencing a world without ego and boundaries between people Shinji choked her to see if she had free will to fight back.
I think you are right with enough time people are able to look at the film with what it is trying to say vs connections people have based on the show. There is a lot of stuff about Eva out there and Anno is a very interesting person to learn about so I hope you guys enjoy your dive into his stuff. I personally still prefer Gunbuster though.
they didnt just hate it, they thrashed the studio and sent death theats
The End of Evangelion can be a difficult film to digest, especially with how tonally stark it is compared to even the darkest episodes of the TV series. IMO it works best as a semi-independent companion piece to the series; an utterly visionary work of arthouse horror. It's probably my favorite film of all time, but I do think that appreciation required time and multiple rewatches to build.
The way the End demonstrates that "no one's really the good guy" and not an "all's well that end's well" kind of ending is why I love it. Whether it's Misato knowing she was about to die and uses Shinji's horniness to get him to go, or Shinji's psychotic breaks. They're people at the end of the world. Not role models.
Whatmost people don't undetstand is that Hideaki Anno felt angry with people critizicing his original end of the serie, so he though "ok, now you're gonna regret it".
awesome review, waited for it! nice to have made a interlude explaining how you feel after reflexion! hope you'll react to the reboots
Get in the robot shinji,
I mustn’t run away.
I did not realize how dark this show was back in the 90s!
Evangelion is my second favorite anime of all time. It is an absolute masterpiece that is so well written, so well thought out, with so many details, some of the best character development ever, and such a deep analysis of the human condition, why we suffer, what the problems with society, and especially Japanese society, are, and how we can address them and even fix them if we have the intelligence and courage to do so. So many themes are covered that I could literally write an entire novel series deconstructing it and still miss something that I would see on another watch. Its heartbreaking, thrilling, emotional, hilarious, incredibly suspenseful and one of the greatest anime ever made of all time. It will forever be one of the greats and even 20 more years from now will be relevant because its themes are universal. A must watch. So glad you guys did it!

I just love Evangelion from start to finish (even the Rebuilds and especially 3.0+1.0) 😆🤣 Ty Anno! ❤ Ty for this fkn insane, heatfelted, comprehensive and ultimately Lifelike experience that is all of Evangelion until the very end (3.0+1.0)
Gendo was the real psychopath here.
Misato didn't send a picture to entice Shinji int he beginning... back there there was no social media or sending digital photos over the phone for kids... so when shinji was told someone would come to pick him up she sent the photo to him so that he knew who it was rather than jumping into a strangers car... when she did that though she decided to be a bit playful towards the teenager which is why she picked THAT photo...
Also the kiss was not her hitting on him... it was her trying to make him wake up in any way shape or form she could... he was broken at that point, she wanted to give him something to bring him back up a bit... and for a teenager that seemed like an available way at the moment... she gave him a little something and told him that if they made it out alive she would give her "the rest" of the experience to motivate him to actually come out ok... even though she knew perfectly well she wasn't making it out alive because she had been shot... it was her last push to help him out...
I just watched the film for the first time and yes.. WTF is that beginning?? I was never prepared for that
This was an amazing journey! Thanks :)
I've been really enjoying these reactions, and I decided to wait until I saw the reactions to all the episodes and the movie before commenting. I would like to start by saying Josh, welcome to the NGE club! I watched the original episodes with the original English dub on TV when I was a teenager, and to be honest I was probably even more confused than you 😂But I love love LOVED the animation and the storytelling, and the dynamic between the characters was very well thought out. Those comedic moments added a little something to it as well. But I think the main thing I really liked about it (and something I probably wouldn't have wanted to admit to myself as a teenager) was how thought provoking it truly is. It's disturbing imagery is not there just for the sake of disturbing imagery. It's there to show what can happen to a young mind when it's completely overwhelmed by traumatic events, and then has to deal with the emotional consequences. I think the show, and especially the movie, did a really good job at depicting that kind of mental breakdown.
I've seen the remakes, including the latest one, and I am so looking forward to those reactions!
hahaha this movie makes you feel soooo many different things. First time watching it, I felt like I was slowly going insane, absolutely love it!!! :)
Her looking over to see his reaction during the hospital scene. 😂
I've really appreciated y'all's reactions to this and to other series over the past few years (started watching y'all w/ (D)one Piece), and I think your reactions to EoE here are really well-put. Over the years, a sort of narrative has emerged about the ending of the series and the production of EoE that relies a lot on interpreting Anno's motivations and a backlash against fans that I don't think is entirely founded. On their own, the series ending does extend a lot more empathy to Shinji and the viewer. Both endings have a sort of existentialist "choose your own reality" kind of message, but EoE really tries to hammer home just how broken Shinji, Asuka, and everyone else have become over the course of the series, such that the semi-hopeful "everyone can choose their forms again" disclaimer that Rei and Kaworu give rings a bit hollow as a pick-me-up, and I think the final moments when Shinji lashes out again reflect that.
Asukas last stand is y shes best girl
Bit of trivia: there was a live-action eva teased, even with a very early trailer, but it got stuck in production hell and disappeared.
Hey completely valid your immediate reaction! That being said, NGE has incredible rewatch value.
The reason Shinji chokes Asuka at the end is because in instrumentality, rejection, sadness and denial don't exist - at the cost of love and acceptance. And so to make sure that instrumentality is over, he chokes Asuka, to confirm the existence of denial and rejection, Asuka, showing him compassion by caressing his cheek is there to confirm the existence of love and acceptance, and so he cries after everything that's happened to him. "Disgusting" is open to interpretation but I take it as her reaction to what he did to her in the hospital, this is backed up by the official reason as to why the word "disgusting" is said (look it up). It's a hopeful ending; once Asuka and Shinji finally open up and start to love themselves, that means that they can love each other, and others too. And it's up to you to interpret how their journeys, and the entirety of humanity continue to live and connect with each other after instrumentality.
For the real ending, you guys definitely need to check the rebuilds and then wrap it up, all together
What I realized on my most recent rewatch:
The only person who really, truly got what they wanted was Yui. She is the lonely soul in the Eva, floating away from instrumentality as a new Seed of Life, like the White Moon of Adam and Black Moon of Lilith. Spear of Longinus in tow, ready to trigger First Impact on a new world.
Yui low key abandoned her son to be a god herself. She might even find another seeded world and start the whole cycle anew. So put another character in the morally complicated category, I guess.
Also since she was the daugher of a SEELE member, they probably plotted from the start to ruin Shinji's life so he could trigger Instrumentality. So go easy on the boy.
It seems like she intentionally decided to merge with the eva cause she knew what SEELE was up to, that way she was going to be able to stop the instrumentality
36:55 keep in mind Shinji is 14 going through things that adults shouldnt even have to while having his hormones and his incredibly low self esteem and fragile ego. Also no this is not a sick pervted fantasy asuka the real asuka is basically saying this because of instrumentality.
(Misato kisses shinji because of a deep love for him not in a girlfriend type way. Misato doesnt really know how to reciprocate love and the only way she knows how to make people feel good is sex or in this case physical contact she tried to comfort shinji because of her love for him and wanting him to step up and do whats right. She knew she was gonna die and used her last strength to try to motivate the kid to fight before dying she also didnt want to die in front of shinji which would probably cause a complete shut down of his mental state.)
(Episodes 25 and 26 are CANON these however are not reality these episodes take place during instrumentality which still fits into EoE.)
i Thing this is Beautiful because it Shows real Emotions. I think it is cool that you made this Videos and i realy want to see the rebuilds
I know a lot of people shit on Shinji as a character and that he doesn't help or do anything right, yada yada. But I find him super relatable. Imagine if you were in his shoes. Forced into a murder machine and having the responsibility of saving the entire world on your shoulders, even if you're just a 14 year old boy with many psychological issues. I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to handle it. That's why this movie is so real compared to most movies out there with a similar plot. I have been going through similar issues as Shinji. I've gotten thoughts of lust, violence and suicide, just like him. Even though you describe him as an unhinged psychopath, I would describe him as a person who has good qualities, that just needs help from someone. Someone who truly cares for him.
The Rebuild movies are not a "reimagining" of the show though... they are actually more like a sequel which is not a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the world... when you watch the first one make sure to pay attention to the post credit scene...
Can't wait for your reaction to the rebuilds.

The pervi things are actually part of the symbols sexuality is one of the themes of this series you have to let go of of the prude mentality to let it be. Yeah after so much trauma I can’t blame Shinji much for going unhinged.
It's not over yet. I'm also looking forward to the reactions to the four film EVANGELION series that will begin in 2007.
The end of evangelism and the end of the series are literally the same ending. Idk why they are saying the endings are different
never heard of you before but stumbled upon your react to eva series and mainlined it all in one day (or at least, the stuff that is still available.. shame that you delete old stuff, will never be able to recommend this to others).
personally I feel like 1-26 are the true original the way it was meant to be and it's fantastic as it is, a lot of people are disappointed that the entire plot up until that point kind of disappears and it dives entirely into the psyche but ultimately it was the entire point of the series was leading up to that finale and there was just no room for anything else in that telling due to the format. I really appreciate this movies depiction of the 'actual' series of events that was being built up to, and the animation really does justice to it that really wouldnt have been realized in the original formats budget (especially given the LACK of budget they had at the end, supposedly). While Shinji's performance or lack thereof is disappointing this is kind of another aspect that the series was building towards, that ultimately his entire life has lacked agency and he only stumbles forward at the urgings of others, never takes initiative of his own. Which is understandable to me as I was much the same way as a kid, I always did as I was told and never stepped outside the rules or did anything other than what I 'should' do. Which is perfect for Gendo's means as he was apparently trying to mold him for this ultimate purpose from the beginning, with Rei as the 'backup' that ended up being essential in a way that even he didn't forsee.
Anyway, despite loving the series as it is and having never watched the "reboots", hearing her talk so positively about them makes me want to finally dig them up and watch them. Previously I was satisfied with this as a conclusion but maybe there will be something interesting in the other movies as well, even if I may not end up adding them to my personal canon as it were.
I will definitely go to patreon when the movies come out XD!!
I want to say that I really loved your reaction of End of Evangelion. Plus it was appropriate to react to the ending with disgust because the thing about this film that so many fans fail to recognize is that it’s really not a happy ending at all. It has a hopeful message that you can choose to be happy, but it still is in no way “happy”. Many of the characters are deeply damaged, including Shinji, because they reflect our own self loathing including Anno’s. It’s literally the opposite of the original ending in the TV series. Although I really prefer the original ending to this, it’s still a disturbing work of art.
It just shows how every character have done terrible things because of their selfishness, there's not one character in the movie that is 100% good or free of guilt, but even like this they can still choose to be happy.
Its been a long time since I've read about the series and movie, but if I remember right the pages with all the writing that Josh said 'script' was some of the hate mail the creator got after the original series came out before the movie. I like to think this movie was his 'you want more answers, you want a less vague ending? Here you go.' Also I believe instrumentality started when Asuka and Shingi start fighting in the kitchen and it ends on the beach. What happens on the beach happens in reverse of what happens in the kitchen.
Will you guys be watching the rebuilds?
My only wish is to be able to watch this for the first time again
Great reactions 🔥🔥
Yep, that's the end. Shinji like Adam and Asuka like Lilith, the two originals, and now they have to repoblate the Earth. You know how.
Now that you have finished the show and movie, would 100% recommend watching the rebuild movies. To some people they arent as good as the show, but they are quite different, the first movie is a regular remake of the first few episodes, but the next movies are really different. The rebuilds are made by the same guy and some of his original production team.
Are you guys going to watch the new movies?
Yep... that was the version 2 or a retelling of episodes 25 and 26, rather than an actual movie. You may have even noticed the title cards saying ep25' and 26' (the ' is read as prime) were there in the "movie"... while the 25 and 26 were from shinji's internal perspective, 25' and 26' were the exact same thing but we were seeing it from shinji's outside perspective. so what happened in these 2 episodes are the same ending but oustide of his own head... what happens after that is the same thing in both... what we saw in the first version was happening while we saw shinji being pushed and pulled around. The movies of Rebuild of evangelion come AFTER both episode 26 and 26'... since both of them end with "shinji waking up" from the 3rd impact he himself started...
now, it's time for the rebuild as we get even further into the rabbit hole of Eva. Despite being titled End of Evangelion, this is barely the end of everything. The real end would be Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time which concludes everything there is to be concluded with Evangelion. Unbeknownst to many, the Evangelion series is more of a letter written by the director Hideaki Anno as each instalment of Eva is a big part of his own life. The reason why many people say that Eva 3.0 + 1.0 is the actual conclusion of the series is mainly because of the director himself as he moves on in his life and moves on with Eva. That movie is a proper send-off to the series and a well-written love letter of Anno to the people around him, to his fans, and to all of Eva in the world.
If gendo exploded like everybody else, he would have got what he wanted, but instead his soul got eated by the Evangelion, and his existance erased.
I like when these scenes made you said WTF😂
Here is a "short" youtube explanation of the evangelion world which does not include the Rebuild movies since the explanation stops before the movies start in chronological order... Yes the movies are AFTER the show in chronological order... XD... it takes into consideration the canon material like manga and video games...
Explaining Evangelion-The Lore of Japan's Most Brilliant Sci-Fi
One thing about Eva 01. I do wonder whether Yui knew what was happening with Asuka and chose to go on her own accord and make Eva 01 activate after Asuka died in order to initiate her own plans for Third Impact. After all her intentions were in direct conflict with Seele and Gendo.
I don't know why I watch evangelion, I don't know why I watch the movie, I don't know what the f**k was that ending and what the hell I just watch
But for some reason I want more
Yay it’s up
I don't know if this is a hot take but I don't think the rebuild movies are as good as the show/EoE movie. Great reaction though! Definitely miss Spike Spencer's iconic "I'm so fucked up" line in the opening scene...
Personally, I don't think most of Rebuild's action scenes (with the exception of the Ramiel battle sequence) were executed nearly as well as the hand-drawn cell animation from the original series. The overall story and character depth felt like a pretty significant downgrade as well.
Generally speaking, that take is pretty much ice-cold.
I like a lot of the world building in the show and Shinji's arc in rebuild is a lot more streamlined.
I think the show streamlines a lot of the more head-fuck portions but still suffers from a lot of Anno's more pretentious leanings. And I do think that the "fanservice" aspects are a lot more gauche than they are here
To me they are literally the se Ending with just a different scope and perspective. I feel like they definitely go together perfectly and Eva wouldn’t be perfect with only one of em. Two sides of the same coin.
The way I see it, Episode 25 and 26 give you a pat on the back and tell you to keep on living. End of Evangelion pushes you into a pool and sees if you can struggle to get to the surface and find the reason to live all on your own.
Awesome react!!!
