  • Can a Christian use swear words? Is cussing a sin? What does the Bible say about swearing? Scripture certainly has a lot to say about the power of language, and that power goes far beyond 4 letter words. In this video, Jon discusses the power that language has to build and destroy, while answering yet another question on Christian behavior.

FarAwayDistance Shouldn't we stay away from them all? Christians are new creation: the old is gone (2 cor 5:17), they do not follow any more the ways of the old self which they have cruficied on the cross (gal 5:24) but refrain from sinning and not continuing it because they cannot because they are born of God (1 John 3:9)

      Colossians 3:8
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
      Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
      James 3:10
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
      Matthew 15:11
It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
      Matthew 12:36
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,
      James 5:12
But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

I grew up in a house where my dad could cuss the wall paper off of the wall. I also talked like that... until the day I became a Christian. The day after accepting Christ I started to say the "S" word, but the word was stopped in my throat and the words shot into my brain "don't talk like that anymore!". I realized it was God talking, all I could say was "OK". He removed those words - THAT DAY- from me.

What I gathered from this is that the words themselves are fine under the right context. If you use words like f*ck, sh*t and d*mn in ways not meant to brung people down, I think it’s okay. The words themselves can be used under the right context, because in the end of the day they’re just words like the rest. The point is to not use these words to bring people down with them. I think saying these words are just about not bringing people down with them. Don’t say the words offensively, use them as to not discourage others. Thanks for clarifying 🙏

what we say reflects God because we are the children of God. If we go around cussing, then how would others see Jesus in us? How does it make us different from others? Our mouth should be used to glorify God and to bring people closer to God instead of pushing them away. We can't do that if what we say are much of the same as the sinners. Hope this helps in a way (: God bless everyone.

I know it's not showing love & kindness & that it's not cool, but I struggle with it regularly & the struggle is real! F**#! But in my defense, my favorite 4 letter F Word is...wait 4 it..Free! :0) Have a blessed day everyone!

I like that!!! Thumbs way up on this one!!! My struggle is definitely cussing. I don't want to, but I feel you on it relieving pressure from acting on what you're thinking. I'm glad this videos here, because, it's amazing to me how, so many.
Christian treat people who struggle with this, as if we committed the most unforgivable sin. Yet most of them tear people down every day with their lies, gossiping. And for those self righteous "saints" who try to make excuses by saying, "if its true then its not gossip." On that note question: Is what you're saying building them up, or working out plans to usher them out of their situations??? Furthermore how about what the Holy Scriptures say about "being a busy body in other peoples matters???" Is the people they're talking about problems or issues any of these gossipers business??? Don't you have you own business to mind and worry about??? Self-righteous people need to also understand this: In the entire witches book of spells and curses. It only has as many or less, cuss words that you can count on one hand.
So my point is to all the self righteous ones, who think they know everything. To go look in the mirror and worry about them zits you got on your on face. Start bursting up those pimples of yours. Instead of looking at what others have. Because you will be the one standing before God to ANSWER FOR YOURSELVES, after all.

Very good explanation Jon. I feel like swearing is all about personal conviction and context. In much like you said, are you using that word to build up or tear down? If someone stubs their toe and they let out a quick "Ah, f*ck" out of sheer pain, I really don't see how that's sinful. However, using that same word to spew hate towards someone, or to describe what you did with a girl/guy over the weekend, then that I would think can be sinful because the message behind that context is ugly/crude/hateful.

I believe there could have been more of a straight answer within these wise words. Cursing is a sin. As a genuine follower of Christ would you do it in front of God the day you reach the gates of Heaven, or any other scenario you may stand before God in for that matter? Would you rejoice by joyfully shouting any of the 4 letter words? You are born with in your heart knowing the difference between right and wrong people and don't let your desire convince you that you can do things you shouldn't. Don't go against your hearts knowing and let the world desensitize you to what you know is immoral. Hold yourself to a higher standard not just for yourself, but for your brethren around you as you shall not be a hindrance to them and their faith. Some good advice, if you're really having to think about wether something is wrong or not it usually is. God bless you all.

    • @kierstencreates958
      @kierstencreates958 5 лет назад

I don't agree with the argument "if you're wondering if it's wrong, it usually is." Many people believe it's wrong to follow Christ. Also, I believe that cursing is a context in which words are used, not words in & of themselves. (This is why some words are used in both good & bad ways.) I.E. people use the name Jesus as a curse word even though it's the holiest name. The word bitch can mean dog, or be used as an insult. The word ass means donkey. Some people consider the word hell to be a curse word & it's in the Bible. Just food for thought....

    • @kierstencreates958
      @kierstencreates958 4 года назад

There are many things people wonder about that are right. For example, muslims wonder when they hear about the Christian faith it's wrong. The Muslim religion would tell them it is. But it's not. Religious legalism has caused much debate about topics that aren't sinful. Many people wonder if something is wrong that isn't just because they were told by someone it's wrong. I believe you are well intended & I'm not in criticism of you but I do feel that is a regurgitated argument personally & not always truthful.

I don't us them a lot, but they're the most appropriate choice in some circumstances, and in others a different word is best. **shrugs** They add a different kind of emphasis. I never use them for harm.
However... Matthew 12:36-37 DID get me. Even if I don't go the "never swearing again, period" route, I can always learn to mind my tongue a little more. Maybe there are a LOT fewer circumstances where a four-letter one is *actually* the very best choice. Hm.

“He has all power to save every man that believeth on his name and bringeth forth fruit meet for repentance.”
Christ himself said, “I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me. And whoso believeth in me and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God. And whoso believeth not in me and is not baptized shall be damned.”
“Neither did they receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented of all their sins. And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.”
“Neither did they receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented of all their sins. And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.”
“And Christ hath said: If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me. And he hath said: Repent all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me, and be baptized in my name, and have faith in me that ye may be saved.”
“For no man can be saved, according to the words of Christ, save they shall have faith in his name.”
All these verses and more are in the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon truly is a testimony of Jesus Christ and has been brought forth by the power of God in these latter days. Anyone who believes these words from the Book of Mormon (and I know these words are true) should contact the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to speak with the missionaries and find out for themselves that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored in these latter days.

So the answer was, it's fine if it helps to encourage someone or if it doesn't hurt or offend anyone. And if it's meant to be used during certain occasions and other ones not, then it also has to be considered along with context. I suppose that makes sense.

Thanks man. Yes. There is nothing inherently wrong with word itself. It's all about meaning we put into.

Yes this is really true there is no need for anyone to say curse words because it is harmful, I admit that I have said cuss words and there has been times when my dad and mom heard me say those words and yeah they have gotten mad at me but a lot of times they just forgive me and remind that God is watching and listening to me and it makes me think and Jesus Christ does forgive me

“Swearing is made to be used when replying gently is to condone with ignorance”
In other words, cussing words have the power to connect and disconnect people to certain behavior. Its our job to have discernment to use the correct words to disconnect people from sin and connect them to the way of God.

      1. Colossians 3:8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and DIRTY LANGUAGE.
      no cussing is good because..
Matthew 15 v 18: 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth, come from the heart, and they defile a man
