@@mariolimbaga5427 Read everything in context and its original languages
The scriptures condemn hateful speech that separates souls and severs bonds and breaks hearts
This means any word you ever use could potentially be profane or corrupt talk
Even words which aren't taboo words within their native language
Fuck shit damn etc. aren't profane corrupt or vulgar by themselves... you just hear and think of them that way because you're a product of your environment and society...
Those same words can be used for good and for uplifting and for love and even for might and motivation...
Its not the words used to say something that God's going to judge in the end.. its what you're saying to people and why that God cares about...
For example if I made a powerful statement about God to help allure people to God and my biblically based teaching but I happened to use a few "cuss" words.... Someone would unleash a swarm of harsh criticisms and condescending remarks towards me with pure hatred... They are the ones in danger of hell fire rather than me being so..

Swearing has been a weakness of mine. I usually slip when I get startled or angry. My habit came back when I worked for enterprise car rentals(I was delivering trucks in Houston. On Highway 45.) that level of crazy traffic can make a nun swear lol 😆. Seriously I nearly got into a crash so many times because the drivers are insane(almost suicidal) on Highway 45 & I-10. I know plenty who do, and some of them even say that they've swore their whole lives so it's a part of them. As for unbelievers, I don't even flinch when they use cuss words and I never say a thing. But, when they misuse my Lord's name... ouch!! Many of them will even apologize when I say, "Owww, my ears!" after they say JC.

I have been working on not taking God's name in vain over the last year, but I have always felt okay with other forms of crass language. That's because, as someone that loves words, I believe that intent matters more than the word itself. If I call my friend an idiot after they hit themselves on a glass door, that's nowhere near as hurtful as if I call a stranger an idiot in the same circumstances. My friends know my intent but the stranger doesn't. We could use modern cuss words in the time of the Bible and they wouldn't have any meaning, because back then when someone swore, it was serious. It was an expression of ill will. F*** you has no meaning, but 'May your fields wither and your herds die of plague' was a legitimate curse. Those were actual curse words. What's an f bomb compared to that?
All that said, after watching this video I have come to the conclusion that I should refrain from crass language. I've become a bit too comfortable in its usage and the point made here is pretty valid. How can I exemplify what God can bring to your life if I'm indistinguishable from a non believer? I will be monitoring my crass language from here on out.

I used the f-word so often just a few years ago. It was just part of my vocabulary I thought and it was kinda fun. I came across a RUclipsr who answered some questions in an Instagram story and he explained why he never says the f-word. He's a Christian and explained that swearwords never add value to your language instead it is just dirty. That was the first time I thought about my speaking mannerisms. I also came closer to Jesus and now I really don't like using the f-word. Last year I had 3 slip-ups but compared to my previous behavior, using the f-word multiple time daily, I made a huge improvement. I also don't like to listen to songs with dirty language in them. It changed IN me. JESUS changed me. And I'm so grateful for that.

Changing your speech to relate to people is called "code switching." It's a philosophy that is inherently built on assumptions and stereotypes, and in most of the contexts it is used is actually racist. The people who promote it say that if a black person gets a job at a workplace, then the white people should change their language to accommodate the black person. This assumes that the black person grew up in a certain environment, speaks a certain way, and acts a certain way simply by the color of their skin, which is racist garbage.

I think something to add is that circumstance plays a huge role in what words you should be using. For example, if I fall on my shin and say "Damnit", that would be inappropriate, but if I am talking about sin and I say "All sin can damn you", it would be completely appropriate. Why? Because there's nothing inherently evil about that noise coming from your mouth. All that's "bad" is the meaning behind the word. And since damnation isn't something we should take lightly, it's not a good thing to shout when you hit your shin, but it is completely appropriate to talk about when speaking of sin.

If the world views a certain word as vile, then the Christian has to understand they cannot use that word anymore since it is now offensive to those who hear. Like the word “ass.” The word itself is not sinful in nature, but the context which is used often in insulting someone, it now becomes a sin. Again, even if you do insult someone and not use a swear word, the act of insulting someone is the problem in itself as we are to build each other up.
There is no such thing is cussing needing to be necessary. “Harsh” doesn’t have to include cussing at someone. It can just be the tone of which a person speaks to someone.

    • @Destractoid
      @Destractoid 2 года назад +1

@@jherandsoleil6335 "harsh" can also be necessary. Jesus, for instance, had some very harsh words for the pharisees in Matthew. Like you said though, the actual words themselves have very little to do with it, but rather the intent is what is important.
A great example I saw in this very comment section is someone recanting how someone was being verbally abusive towards their mentally handicapped friend who, being mentally handicapped, would be unable to let it slip past them like most people can. And so the commenter, loving his friend, quietly, but sternly, simply said "f off," which conveyed everything he needed to.
That kind of response doesn't even necessarily mean that the commenter hated the man, but rather he wanted to protect his friend because he loved him.
We are supposed to protect our loved ones from harm, even to the point of violence; Jesus said that thinking wrongly towards someone is lawfully the same as murder; if thoughts can be counted as murder (sin), and physical violence can be counted as righteousness in the right circumstance, than there is a point in the middle where what you say (which is not physically violent) can be harsh, righteous protection with the correct motive.
And if you want to discuss the cultural view of certain words, both Jesus and Paul called various people and groups "fools," which culturally was a much worse insult than just about any words we call people today. The important parts was motive, truth, and context.

@@Destractoid If we're going to focuss on the passage where Jesus flips the tables or chases the people out, let's breakdown the passage in Matthew 21:12-13
Jesus went into the temple of God, cast them out that sold and bought in the temple and threw the tables and seats. Then told them that his house is to be called the a house of prayer and they made it a den of thieves.
      1. This is a description of an event that took place and demonstrated how Jesus acted. When Jesus speaks to teach a lesson, he will tell the person directly or in a form of a question or parable. The actually lesson that Jesus wanted to teach is that the temple was made for prayer, not business. He didn't flip the tables and say "these actions have I shown unto you, that ye may cleanse all the defiled temples."
      2. The specific issue at hand is about swearing, the verbal response one has. We cannot compare Jesus' action to learn how we should verbally respond. Like I mentioned, afterwards, Jesus reminded the crowd the temple's true purpose in the midst of false purpose.
Now lets look at other verses
      Ephesians 4:29
A verse you've seen throughout the comment section. The first half commands us to not speak corruption, which you may say cursing isn't corrupting depending on context. But the actually purpose for that command is for the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
In your example, of the friend defending the other friend, where is the grace in those words? Did his response of "fuck off" direct the man to God's grace to bring him towards Him? Even if one were to say "please, get out" it would be against the scripture. Rather, the command is that in all that we say, it should point and bring glory back to God.
1 Cor 10:23 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not."
Now, is a swear word in itself inherently evil? No. The word by itself is just a word. Using a "cuss" word can be defined as "lawful" but is it edifying?
When someone unsaved sees a Christian who swears, I have never seen them say "wow, that Christian is so relateable to me, I want to know their God." Rather, the typical response is "what a hypocrit."
I was at work once and a Dr wouldn't give pain meds for a patient who was hurting. I had to convince him for 10 mins that we need it. At the end of the conversation, I hung up, and yelled "fuck" since it was frustrating I had to do that for a person in pain. Now, using your view point, it is justifiable in the sense it was a stronger word to use to explain my frustration for a good deed I was aiming to do. However, the first thing a co-worker said was, "I have never heard you swear before. Aren't you a God follower?" He wasn't mocking me, we are good friends. But that's how he saw cursing as well. A Christian's testimony is very important.
10:31 - doing all to the glory of God. Nothing with my single comment of "fuck" brought glory to God, but rather made my co-worker question my action. In your example, if the gentle who received the "fuck off" states "wow, glory to your God who made you defend this special needs child." Then I would stand corrected. But unless a day comes where unbelivers who hear Christians swearing as glory to God, then the act of swearing cannot be justifiable.
The only counter-argument would be "oh but what if someone said 'I ***king love my wife!" used as a positive gesture. But until unbelievers no longer see a Christian who swears as "hypocritical" then to their ears, it will not being glory to God.

Firstly, how do you see the verses where Jesus flipped being relevant to what I said? By brain could just be giving out on me right now, but I just don't see how it has anything to do with what I said.
Secondly, what would you have the man from the other comment do in order to protect his friend if it is like you say, and you are not suppose to even say to "get out of here"?

My issue isn’t with cussing out loud (because I have no desire to cuss anymore) but with cussing mentally in the form of intrusive thoughts or second nature. There’ve been times I’ve almost died and my final thought would’ve been an f-bomb. I’m not okay with that but I have no idea how to make it stop. I’ve just asked Jesus to help me and to cleanse my mind and if there’s anything I can do about it I prayed that He would reveal it to me.

I'm glad that you've defined this as cussing. When people call it cursing, it confuses the issue. Curses, to put a curse on another, is unequivocally a sin.
I have a bit more lax opinion about cussing than you, but I think it's from the same heart. Those words should be used sparingly, if at all, but if they are used, they are shorthand. My best friend in high school had cerebral palsy and we were hanging out with a group at a local bowling alley. There were some other guys near us that started talking about him, then started to mock and bully him. Finally, one of them sat down next to him and did the super-nice bullying thing..."Hey, Name! How are you doing? It's great to see you!" He wasn't answering, but the other guy kept at it, "Why aren't you talking to me buddy?" Would I have been able to sit down, look at him and say "I think that what you're doing is inappropriate, you're hurting a friend of mind, and if you don't leave now, I'm willing to escalate my defense of him?" Maybe? I sat down, looked that guy in the eye and said "F off." He got everything I meant in that moment.
Like I said, sparingly. VERY sparingly. But if used in that shorthand way...give yourself a little grace.

As a church we tend to get caught up in rules and regulations that aren’t necessarily biblical but they are cultural, this is one of those things. Someone could go their whole life without saying fuck, but still talk bad about someone behind their back. Obviously in society we want to be taken seriously so people are open to hear us talk about the gospel, and swearing comes off as inappropriate in society today, so as christians in most cases swearing does more hurt than good. Swearing isnt a sin though, so therefore it isn’t relevant really and definitely not salvific.

Funny story along these lines lol. I come from a very conservative denomination. My brother in law and I went to the same Bible College. And I wasn't at this particular church service when this incident happened but he was. We had a friend there at school who was from Jamaica, who had a call to preach (last I heard he's pastoring a church in Jamaica right now 😊). So anyway he was in the ministerial department. And the "preacher boys" as we call them are given different opportunities thru the school year to preach, even if it's just a 10 minute (sometimes improv) sermon. So our Jamaican friend was preaching at a church here in the states. And in his message he said "You all probably don't know what the h--- I'm talking about." In Jamaica the h word, in that context isn't a swear word and he had no clue it is here 😂. Somebody kindly approached him after the service to let him know not to say that here like that 😂. On the other hand they have words there that are swear words that aren't here. The same Jamaican man was trying to tell my brother in law without saying it. So he asked my brother in law "When you're cut, what comes out of you?" "Blood." "What is fabric made from?" "Cloth." In Jamaica putting those 2 words together is a swear word.

I also think context is key. I don't like to hear something pointless like: "How the F are you?" But if you stubbed your foot into a wall or burned your hand and said "Ah, F!" I'd understand. Your language wouldn't be your first concern.

I’m a Christian but the occasional swear word will slip out when I get angry or frustrated.

There is a reason why we call them "curse words" We as Children of God should not be using these words. God bless you all! 🙏 ❤

What I noticed some brothers and sisters in Christ is they don't use the bad words in church, but outside the church, they do.

Btw, certain 'edge' words (such as 'frick' and 'crap') are actually considered swear words by some, with the former word being derived from the F word translated to German (remove the 'R' and you get the German F word).
Yes I can be a troll, also this is my second comment but idc =)

Personally, I used to cuss like a sailor or worse. I just came to Christ last year and it was the first habit/sin that the Lord changed in me. I am so grateful for that. Now, I can't help but realize that cursing is intellectually lazy. I'd rather have a varied and astute vocabulary to honor my Lord with more professional speech.

Well done Sir, how old are you, and did you get baptized? I know baptists hate cursing, did you feel Christ's spirit enter into you, and remove the swear demons?

It became a second language in the military. Its extremely hard to not do, especially when it's not angry. You can recognize when you're mad and want to swear. My issue is the happy "ohhh fuck yeaaaa bitchh!" Kind of swearing

If you use the most vulgar of cuss words all the time, nobody can be shocked by anything you say. If I said even the most mild of cuss words, people would be like, “Hey, she’s serious”
A person who drops f bombs all the time can never get that communion of, “Hey, this is a dire situation.”

I’ve had to get creative to replace the cuss words that used to fly out of my mouth. “Son of a nutcracker!” has become a very well loved expression of irritation and I also resort to a little British slang. I really don’t like, a**, b****, s***, f*** or c***. Especially the last two. Those two since I’ve removed them from my vocabulary sound especially harsh. The others I just find too crass. I can’t help but wonder someone’s level of intellect if they are dropping cuss words left and right. Because you don’t have to use them. You can use other words.

One of the great errors being spread in the church is pastors saying “we are just like you all!” But if an unbeliever looks at your life, they should see no similarity between themselves and you and the only hope they could ever have if being anything like you is if they believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” Mike Riccardi. Brothers and sisters, we are not relatable to the world anymore. We are aliens, new creatures, consecrated, set apart, and holy. Not of ourselves but by the grace of God. We have nothing in common with the world anymore. How we talk shows where our hearts are living. Do we talk like the world?

So I actually have been going through a study of the sermon on the mount, and in it, Jesus uses the word "Raca", although indirectly.
Granted, there is debate as to how severe this word is, but based on His words saying " those who say Raca are in danger of the courts but those who say Thou Fool are in danger of the judgement" I'd say that it's a pretty severe word to use.
Plus, Jesus surrounded himself with sailors and other sorts of people from backgrounds where crass language would be common. Whether or not he emulated that language outside of the written texts isn't exactly stated, but he does also curse a tree and essentially tells it to go to hell. (However I'd need to check a concordance for myself as it's been a VERY long time since I read that passage)
I feel like there might be some instances where curse words might be more necessary than other forms of speech to show severity. After all, the words are only considered crass because we as people say they are. (An episode of Recess comes to mind where the gang made up a word and the TEACHERS decided it was foul language when it was a meaningless word)
But in general, words themselves being considered foul is a rather recent invention. And many words of that nature have perfectly serviceable and innocent proper meanings. The only words I can even think of that have explicit intended meanings are the D word, the F word, and maybe the S word since it intends to be excrement. (But crap is usually accepted and other words involving excrement are also similarly accepted)
Even then, the D word is losing its punch in modern society.
In my understanding, it's not necessarily our duty to monitor these changes of words as the world will have words mean whatever it wants them to, but it is our responsibility to use the words as they are intended to be understood, and to make sure our meanings are clear. Sometimes this will involve foul language, but the majority of the time, the VAST majority of the time, it won't.

I say profanity, although can be seen as "inappropriate" and "rude" are only that way around people who believe so. I find it that way, so I avoid it. I only occasionally use it for certain times. As long as I'm speaking life and love, I'm speaking right.

    • @PaladinThizz

Would you use profanity in front of Jesus or at a church? The thing is if you change yourself for different places you're at you're being a hypocrite. The fact is swearing is sinful and not becoming of a Christian

    • @jacobsc2866

@@PaladinThizz Same thing can be said about our posture and clothing we wear though. So many people dress up to go to important meetings but couldn't care less about what they wore to church. Mean while for me with profanity I find it to be unnecessarily harsh language that shouldn't be practiced especially as Christians, but I wouldn't define the word itself as a sinful thing
