The Darkling really is the great equalizer but not in the Mario Party way of "Everyone meets in the middle" but rather the "Everyone meets at the bottom" way.
It's very "We all burn together" and "If I can't have it, no one can"
I just realized Kathy has so far been following the Hero's Journey. Refusal of the call (starts out stealing stuff left and right), completes trials (defeats monsters and saves villages), then reaches the "abyss" which is her lowest point. Gabrielle falls to darkness and the villages she saves are seized by monsters even more powerful than before.
If she continues to follow this path, she should experience a transformation next (maybe a literal one like into an acrobat for instance?) then reaches apotheosis (her most idealized self), after which she vanquishes evil in the final battle and does her victory lap.

Man it’s so crazy that this minor character JOHN is being set up as the big villain in Kathy’s arc.
Edit: I really feel the Mangaka really jumped the shark with this issue, JOHN was always this pathetic little joke character, but they made him way to mean spirited this episode: having him beat up all the other characters, bullying poor Gabriel into super villainy by calling her fat, and having him suddenly win big at the slot machines uses the spinner tool? This manga is really going down hill, I can’t wait for Super Eye Patch to make a video on the Fall of Dokapon Kingdom.
You have to make the villain an asshole so it's satisfying when he loses, but first we have to survive the Darkling arc.
I'm glad Gabriella gets to be out sympathetic villain who will be redeemed while John is our unredeemable villain!
True. Johnpa the Rookie Crusher was a bit too much of a bully in this arc, and it was a bit of an asspull from the mangaka that he was able to beat the other three characters. You really expect me to believe that Johnpa could've taken on ALL THREE of the others, especially Kathy, at the same time? Absolute plot armor just to act as a setback for the heroes, this arc could've been a lot better. I personally can't wait to see if they adapt the "Steve's Hero License" arc from the web novel, though I'm not sure if they'll want to commit to that seeing as how much of a jobber this adaptation is trying to sell him as. I hope they do though, because Steve's rise from underdog to turning the tides upon becoming a Hero, really completes his whole arc.
@@Pompadourius to be fair John didn't actually beat any of them the three of them were fighting each other when John swooped in to take advantage of their exhausted state, and even then they surrendered without a fight.
While John accepted the first two surrenders with some degree of honor, he chose to humiliate the otherwise innocent Gabrielle. Poor Gabrielle was jumped by all three of them the humiliation was the final straw on her failing sanity.
Honestly if John hadn't humiliated Gabby that way her fall into Darklingdom wouldn't have made any sense. It was just the thing to push her over the edge.

john is basically the doomsday prepper who turned out to be right
I love the Darkling Mechanic because it actually allows anyone to make a comeback, no matter how badly behind you are (excluding the broken local item/Alchemist combo which you just have to house rule out).
Combos perfectly with the "beat a player, get exp to be their level" mechanic too.
John played super well in the latter half of the episode, was really fun (and tense when he got the acrobat job unlock item). Hopefully someone in chat informed him that it's best to finish maxing out a job first for the permanent extra stat each level up (I can't remember if he mastered his starting class or not)

John's gonna actually be at Woolie's house, it's gonna be a perfect recreation of that one scene in Face/Off, where Sean attempts to strangle Castor to death after the latter gloats about wearing Sean's face and living his life, while Sean rots in prison in his place. Complete with John shrieking *_"DiiiiiiiieeeeEEEE~~!!"_* in the goofiest way possible like Sean did.
This is so much fun. The systems make for such fun highs and lows (at least for me, as an audience member). Though I now understand why Woolie called this game "the marriage ender" a while back.
I love that this carries the energy of Giant Bomb's Mario Party Party streams, but it's just John being tormented on his own.
Kathy is the protagonist of this story, and Eyepatch is the crummy side character that keeps pestering the protagonist.
I'm honestly seeing come of the similarities between this game and Fear & Hunger. In both games you can craft some 10,000 IQ strat, only to have a random unforeseen coin-flip unexpectedly throw a wrench in the whole thing; and suddenly your entire run is toast.
I fear the next episode of Versus Wolves will contain Woolie's murder or an Omikron recommendation.
Maybe John should get his suit and suitcase ready for next podcast.

Seeing as how she's the most active AI so far? Definitely.
See, here's the issue around the narrative with Dokapon Kingdom. Is the game evil and cruel? Yes. Absolutely.
But it's also GOOD. It's interesting and deep and complex and CRUNCHY in the best ways. It's tense and allows for moments of discovery and investment and emotion that you aren't going to get from a Mario party or anything like it.
Look at John come the end of this episode. That is elation. Genuine joy, all because Dokapon created a rising and falling action, a stress and release he could actually invest himself in.
It is a cold, cruel game. It does not care if you succeed or fail. It does not care if you understand what you did wrong. You will either learn, or die, broken and penniless. But the same could be said of Fear and Hunger. There is a reason there are not clones and -alikes of this, but they still gave it a re-release with online play. No other game is quite like Dokapon Kingdom. Maybe one day, someone will find that balance between crunch and randomness, the charming visuals and discovery and tension, and Dokapon will fade from its unique position. But For now, this is the feeling you can only get from Dokapon Kingdom.

This video really shows us Kathy's biggest L so far, since JOHN & L10P/Gabby decided to just maul her for 40 mins straight.
I had not expected the mage to embrace the darkness. Kathy certainly plays like a thief. Picking her fights when she has a chance and running when at a disadvantage.
Not even when she's at a disadvantage. She was winning by so much that fighting the others gave her nothing.

Hero Kathy just conceded in order to prioritize the townspeople's safety, but even after that this 2 bit side character couldn't defeat the monster and Hero Kathy had to clean up after his failure.

I just realized this. Is the fem warrior avatar showing underboob? I can just barely make out lines that look like underboob. That or it's some kind of stomach definition, which would be weird, but not impossible.
I figured the game gave out a randomized name to keep the player from changing the name to something fucked up, but nope! Game gives Gabrielle the most fucked up name I've ever seen outside of fps handles.
It's kinda lame that they changed the name prank to a random selection.
