I don't get why you have to measure the "full extension" for the second piece. I just hold the door like you did and attach second piece, mark it, then screw in. It's fully extended already, so as long as you have the first one measured correctly on the hatch lid should be good.

I thought the piston is on the upside and the rod on the bottom to keep debris from getting into the piston..
