  • In this video we're installing a new gas hinge (aka gas strut) on a pontoon boat. This 30# strut will support the sun deck making it easier to open AND keeping it open when needing access to the fuel system, battery, or other storage in the rear. If simply replacing an old strut it's very straight forward, but in a new installation scenario these can be frustrating to install if you're unfamiliar with them. My hope is that this video will make your project go a little smoother and easier.

What is great about it is the tight fit it has with the seats!!!

Perfect, I needed this video. I do t have a center cross member, so will one work on the end? Or are two needed?

If it’s a full width sundeck you’ll probably want two hinges, one on either side. Otherwise, start with one and see how it looks and feels. Sometimes it’ll sorta sit lopsided and floppy if one isn’t enough.

Hi Tom, question, what thickness plywood do you use for the sundeck cover? Also, have you ever used a PVC plastic or king starboard for the cover of the sundeck? Having issues finding aan upholster so wondering if you did anything different then padded vinyl pads? Thanks.

Great question! I use the same 3/4" plywood that I use for the floor (PontoonStuff.com's marine grade treated). I cut it to the correct size and then my local upholsterer does the foam and the matching vinyl. The only other material I've seen was a molded plastic, likely made specifically to those boats by the manufacturer...it didn't look aftermarket!!

What kind of latches do you add to the sunbed?

I typically use a vinyl strap with a snap on each side of the cushion to keep it closed when trailering.

What pound shocks do you use? I have a full size seat I will be using them on

Usually 20# or 30#. Sometimes 40# if it’s a shorter strut. We mostly just want it to make opening a little easier and mainly to hold it open safely at the top!!
