loved it!.. clear, easy and so well explained.. but what I likeed the most was that you go straight to the point.. sometimes in these kind of videos people take half of the vido just saying thanks for this, thanks for that and bla bla bla...
Thank you for making and sharing this. I've been considering an overlocker for ages but never actually seen working demonstrations; it looks less scary than I'd imagined.
Thank you Liz, I understand coverstitch machines much more now, it was a really clear and understandable video. Unfortunately I now think I need one! Time to start saving those pennies. ☺
I just ordered a machine and have been binge-watching videos. On one, I saw a great tip about lessening the bulk from the serger seam. She clipped it right at the fold of the hem, perpendicular to the seam, and then like in quilting, you can have the seams "nest" by having the long surged seam go in the direction it was pressed, and then flip over the small hem seam to go in the opposite direction. This cuts the thickness by half and as you're sewing, it locks the seams together. You won't need to use the seam jumper that way. I hope this is clear. I hope I can give something back to you!
Very helpful, thank you. I don't know why I've only just realised that you can click on those time stamps....I didn't realise they're similar to hypertext links / bookmarks - even though they're in 'blue' 🤦♀️😂... It's very handy, thanks x
Such a great idea here to play with the hems and threads to get a different finish. I am on the fence about purchasing this exact machine but your video has nudged a little further.
Hey Liz! Happened upon this video by accident and so glad I did. Huge fan of you on Sewing Bee - watching it is a regular Saturday morning ritual for me and my two kiddos. In fact my daughter (7) asked to have her hair styled inspired by yours! She is stoked to watch your videos on RUclips now too. Hello and thanks from Canada!
I loved watching your video. I just bought a coverstitch that can make the decorative stitches on both sides. I am so excited to break out that rainbow thread on everything :) . So you have any videos on how to best set the tension and other knobs?
I also like to do overlapped seams with the "loopy" side on the right side of the seam - I've done that with a few tees and sweatshirts using a sparkly, colourful wooly nylon in the looper. Love the result!
There's no need to anchor at the start. At the end you need to finish in the way I show (pull the needle threads forward, snip them and pull back and to the left) and that will knot them. Then you can tie the ends in a little granny knot and thread them back through the loopy stitches if you want to, or just snip the ends off.
Hello, sorry i know you left this comment ages ago, but it's known as a hump jumper or a bulky seam aid. Very useful to have around for sewing jeans too!
Thanks to explaint difference betwin cover stich and surger . I never know that mcs its a brand . Very informative !! I added you to my favouriet vhannels and hope you will post more of greta videos .
Sorry for the late reply, it's a hump jumper also known as a bulky seam aid. They're not strictly necessary, you can do the same thing using a piece of thick fabric folded over.
Love your videos. Love the dress and the decorative reverse cover stitch can’t believe I’ve never thought to do this! Where do you get the gorgeous rainbow thread? I definitely need this in my life! Thank you Liz
@@LizGrylls do you have a downloadable pattern for the adorable dress? I’m seeing my 5 year old granddaughter in august …coming from China. Not seen her since a baby but I’d love to make it and some leggings for their winter coming. THANKYOU.
Fantastic tutorial video so loved it very informative and giving me much more confidence to experiment with mine more Please could you tell me where to purchase the rainbow thread ✂️🧵😁
You pull the needle threads to the front from under the presser foot and cut them, then pull the whole garment to the back and left. It will knot the threads for you if you do it that way. If you wish you can knot them again or thread them through the looper threads, add fray check or burn them with a lighter.
I think it probably all depends on the manner in which they're sewn together. A true flatlock seam will have the edges butted together and the flatlock is sewn over the top. The three needle coverstitch (the way I sew it) is a decorative addition to a seam that's already been sewn and finished with an overlocker, so will add strength.
You can use any kids teeshirt pattern. Add a rectangle about 1.5 x the width of the teeshirt and gather it to make the ruffle. I think I used a Brindle and Twig teeshirt pattern for this.
Hello! Sorry for the REALLY slow reply, I had a long break. My noisy family are in the house a lot more since Covid, which makes the talking to camera type of video really hard, so I'm figuring out new ways and times to film and will be back with some new videos very soon!
thanks so much for your kindness in doing this video
Thanks so much, great concise no fuss instructions and video🤩
Most of the videos on coverstitch are for threading etc! Thank you for showing what the stitches look like I needed this!
You're welcome!

Glad it was useful! They're cool machines to have if you can justify it. Happy sewing!

Do you perhaps have a link to that video?
Thanks for the video that helps us versatile use of thread, needle, sides of fabric reversing. Very masterful class
Very helpful. I'm thinking about getting a coverstitch machine. That outfit is so cute!
Great job of telling us your techniques for the coverstitching. I appreciate your voice.
I love how you explained everything. You made it so clear. I just bought my first cover stitch and am eager to get started. Thank you.
Super cute! Thanks for the demo 😊

A lovely clear demonstration. Thanks Liz 💕

What a great vid! I'm new - how do you anchor the chain stitch? Or, how do you secure the decorative reverse one (rainbow)?
There's no need to anchor at the start. At the end you need to finish in the way I show (pull the needle threads forward, snip them and pull back and to the left) and that will knot them. Then you can tie the ends in a little granny knot and thread them back through the loopy stitches if you want to, or just snip the ends off.
Awesome tutorial, thank you! I'm really interested in getting a coverstitch machine to get a professional finish on knits... This looks great.
"dancing bit" I love it!
The things kids come out with!
I get a similar effect using the twin needle on my sewing machine. Never tried doing it on the 'wrong' side.
Thanks for the demo, and shout out to another fan of variegated rainbow thread! 🌈🏳️🌈😃
Lovely and clear explanation , Thank you Liz
Thank you 🤗
Thanks for the very complete and useful information! Very pity that there is no Dutch explanation available.
This is a great video and really helped me understand what a coverstitch does. Thank you so much.
Thank you for your tips. Grateful 🙏
Thanks for a great tutorial! What is the tool you used under the pressure foot when you went over seams? I have Juki 1500

I think I got mine from Rockstar Fabrics but lots of places have it if you google "rainbow overlocker thread".

Thank you very much for this!!

thorough video.
Great video! Subbed!
So cute
Hi Just wonder what brand of multicoloured cotton did you use on the dress please
It doesn't have a particular brand I'm aware of. If you Google search "rainbow overlocked cone" you should find some.
what was that little tool you used to hop over the seam? thanks!
It's called a hump jumper!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Great instructions. Blitzkrieg Bop!
thank you so much
Thank You! 🌹💝!

Love it
so when your done, you don't have to tie the threads together on the bottom chain side? The top your just cutting the threads also?
You pull the needle threads to the front from under the presser foot and cut them, then pull the whole garment to the back and left. It will knot the threads for you if you do it that way. If you wish you can knot them again or thread them through the looper threads, add fray check or burn them with a lighter.
@@LizGrylls but what about the two threads on top from the start of the coverstitch?
I was told a three needle coverstitch would hold a seam better than a Flatlock stitch?
I think it probably all depends on the manner in which they're sewn together. A true flatlock seam will have the edges butted together and the flatlock is sewn over the top. The three needle coverstitch (the way I sew it) is a decorative addition to a seam that's already been sewn and finished with an overlocker, so will add strength.
Hi so you started the video with the piece already mounted onto the machine. I’m having trouble because the stitch starts lower and then I can move it
I'm really sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean
Can you use/do you need a walking foot on a coverstitch machine?
Not to my knowledge, no.
What is the name of the black block you used for the presser foot over the bulky seam?
That's called a hump jumper! There's a bit more explanation about it in my sewing tools videos.
@@LizGrylls So glad someone asked this, I need one in my life. These points are where my coverstitches seem to break. Awesome video thanks x

Is coverstitch the kind of stitch I see on underwear/panties over the elastic?
Hi, sorry for the late reply, yes that's a narrow coverstitch
Can you recommend a pattern to make the dress?
You can use any kids teeshirt pattern. Add a rectangle about 1.5 x the width of the teeshirt and gather it to make the ruffle. I think I used a Brindle and Twig teeshirt pattern for this.

I'm looking to buy a coverstitch machine, I work with a lot of stretchy fabric, knits, spandex and other. I make underwear. PLEASE PLEASE HELP
Have you ever done any gathering on a coverstitch machine? Apparently, it can be done, but I can't figure out the settings! :)
No, sorry! That's interesting though. I reckon it will be something to do with the differential feed. Maybe similar to gathering with an overlocker?
Liz Liz Liz please tell us the pattern of the little girls dress in the intro? Pleeeeese 🥰
I think it's a Brindille and Twig crew neck teeshirt pattern that I added a gathered rectangle to the bottom of.
