Too many chefs in the kitchen one might say. But more realistically it's the same issue with every corporate occupation, the higher ups are out of touch but want to make all the important decisions based on their limited perspective.
I think it’s awesome that you’re doing this reflection on your work and paying attention to your audience’s criticism. Talking about how gaming companies fail to listen to their audience is one thing but learning from their mistakes and avoiding them is another.
I mean yeah your right im ok with companies wanting to make money they aren’t a charity at the end of the day but whats happening now is too much they are milking every penny they can get out of their customers without giving them anything valuable to make up for it
imo its not the lack of passion in the studios, its the expectations the higher ups like the publishers have for the games the studio is making. all these micro transactions that feel out of place are because they're not meant to be there but were shoved in to make extra cash.
I think the fall of AAA is a good thing. People will realize that too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup, that the big money surrounding games is exactly what is harmful to it, that it is an intellectual sector involving computer science and interaction and not a thespian sector involving acting and theater. Each can lend to and learn from the other, but they are distinct. If we get away from the consulting firms and large studio format then people with talent will find a means to create personal capital rather than corporate capital.
The triple A industry is not failing, just look at the last 3 yrs, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, FF7 Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, GOW Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Tears Of The Kingdom. Part of the reason I subscribed was because you unveiled a larger part of the video game industry than I initially realized (companies, business, investing, economics, loss leaders, IP, etc...). I've always wanted to be an indie game developer since childhood, but I know now (in part because of this channel) the sheer amount of work and interdisciplinary skills necessary to accomplish such a feat, especially the marketing and money side of things. So, I appreciate some of the less indie-related content you put out :)
Facts. I’ve said before a video game crash is coming and it’s inevitable. However, unlike the 80’s, it’s only going to be a AAA crash. Indies, AA, and Nintendo will be just fine and will thrive.
Indie games are just so fun and sweet to play. The devs are always passionate about their games and it shows with their creativity. By the way, keep the stache going strong, it looks solid!!
Your videos give me motivation to keep going, making games is super cool and all, but its more thinking about it that's exciting, actually doing it is very hard work over a long periods of time the desire fades. For me I've played games for decades and they got worse with either balancing to sell skins, pay to win, or been made by corporations for making the most money possible, so if you want something right, you got to do it yourself, a year and a half later got my first launch! I agree with everything you've said, AAA is shooting themselves in the foot and indie is the future for sure, just marketing is troublesome, If there's one way to help indies is to help promote. Your game looks sick and thanks for your content.

We need to take the concept of Kickstarter and evolve to a new model of community investment. The core problem is with the up front money it takes; it puts a publisher, or a parent company, or some type of investor ABOVE the devs in terms of what the game is and how it is marketed. We end up PAYING for these games, and more than the cost it took to make (otherwise there would have been no profits), so there is no reason we couldn't take that money instead and invest it, leading to the potential for profits and 100% aligning the interests of players and developers. If you screw over your players, you lose your funding and fail... as you should. It also means better pay and working conditions for devs.
It's not only indie games that can thrive now, that AAA (or AAAA 🙂) games are failing. AA games are coming back too, if I'm not mistaken. I think AA and indie games have to and can better cater to the players and their wishes.
When I was younger I used to go at least once a month to my local game store, trade in and buy a brand new game constantly….. it was like there was a never ending stream of great games ! Now I don’t even pay that much attention to what’s even coming out because nearly everything is a disappointment or broken mess . I’m always playing my Steam backlog or older games I’ve had for years giving them another run . If I buy new games, it’s very rarely AAA ….. like one if that a year, most games are early access or not made from a big dev ……. I just won’t reward big Developers with my money because they suck …… the games are mediocre and they inject real world politics into everything…… and the games never work out the box ! Clearly there are exceptions to the rule but most AAA games suck badly!
Something AAA companies don't realize, is they're paving a rode for much smaller developer's to become even more sustainable with fair priced micro transactions. Helldivers2 is just the first sign, a smaller dev can make an amazing game, and sell some fairly priced add ons, to bolster revenue from fans that want to support them. No man's sky is a live service game with no micro transactions, but still constant updates, game changing updates!

I've felt positive about indie games since the Xbox Live Arcade days. It's just gotten better since. Despite my never releasing a game, I have tried on & off for over a decade to make one but always ran into scope issues. It's the same story as the film industry and the music industry. People who like money get business degrees and go where the money is and take as much as they can legally get away. Creatives break away and create their own small Studios and when they get successful and old and tired of creating, or they hit hard times and need funding, they sell their studio to the big corp who then rides this new wave creative talent and intellectual property into the ground, and all the creatives leave and go to another small studio and the cycle repeats.

For a long time, during the 2010s, I've stopped buying video games, as well as movies and tv shows, as well as music, because....well...much of the medium I have loved from the 1990s and early to mid 2000s....aren't as enjoyable as what I loved 20/25 years ago.....it's sad that nintendo may be the only one to stand out, but they've also are infamous for sending out DMCAs/Copyright claims for properties that they wish to emulate older games on platforms outside of their consoles, yet haven't bothered to let these games be played on their own current selling console, including Gamecube games...which really sucks because there's plethora of older games that can be enjoyed as much as those who grew up playing games before the 2010s and even the 2000s. Heck, Emulation/Retro gaming helped me get over my anger and hatred during 2013/2014, after the boston bombing, and I became a casual played from 2014 onward, with the exception of one or two video games I like to play the most (but only a couple of hours or maybe an hour or less). Either way, I wish you indies ALL the luck you can with making your own IP franchises, as I've been only interested in making franchises in terms of filmmaking, tv shows, and my favorite, music/music videos (and yes, including video games). I do hope that the same creativity, passion, and heart that's done into video games would also be the same for other types of entertainment, including movies. I've been a big music listener for 25 years, but I wish you good luck as well as other future devs out there to create their own franchises that someday will be just as popular as the mainstream Triple A (AAA) companies have done prior to the 2010s.
Studios are losing their rep, and that's an excellent chance for indie devs like me to bring their best foot forward and steal that big pie slice I'm not even working with my buddies, I'm literally the one and only developer working on my own game, and it's been almost 2 years since I started working on it Is it hard? Yes, yes it's hard, and my game is purely mechanics as we speak, from Crafting to Construction to Ranged, Magic and Melee Attacks, to Skills that you can level up, Quests, Shops, Inventories, Armors, Enemies being your Allies through dialogue invitations, etc, etc, etc... It's been 19 wild months since I started that thing, and there's not a single video online to show what I've been doing just yet But I've been through enough hard stuff that I know I'm not giving up now There's no environment just yet, but coding-wise, it's computationally light and will probably run on even 10-year old hardware at 30FPS (it's being built on a GTX1650 laptop. That's old and weak compared to modern systems). The goal is to make something EVERYONE can enjoy, and have its own Unique twists too (which is also why the graphics are low-poly) Whenever I feel like it's even barely ready, I'll start sharing footage online
Everything hinges on independent developers, but therein also lies the predicament. Indies have the potential to reinvent the industry, but they need to first consolidate themselves and _have the ambition_ to become AAA. Only then will we have studios with not only creativity, but the resources and manpower to make creativity the new standard in the industry.
I greatly value the selfless services you want to do for indies, but Id also hope you wouldn't feel like you can't do anything except promote indies. If you're having fun doing crazy stuff, and we're having fun coming along for the ride, that's all that matters.
I just watched the summer fes and the actual interesting games are just a handful. I want to support indie games, and I do, but some of them are just... ugh.
Since the video game market has become oversaturated, a Spotify-esc model will soon envelop the industry... [indie] devs are desperate to get exposure and they will accept $0.05 per play to get on Gamepass. Gone are the days of "gems" the corporate sector of the game industry will continue to become more crooked, as everyone from Monsanto corporation to the Saudi-investment fund are dumping money into the AAA scene.
Every always f forget about nintendo how their AAA and how they put out a lot of good game yet indie is the future its so silly , the take isnt wrong but please put some respect on Nintendo's name
Indie Games suck too, there's hardly any creativity and most indie games are just copies of retro games or gimick games that are mediocre. Plus with all the new modern tropes being added to future indie games, the use of AI, the future for gaming is anything but positive.
Are you working on an indie game too?

I don't understand how certain companies can be messing up so badly. It's frustrating that other passionate people are not allowed to make a version of a type of game that we used to have but no longer get anymore.. Yet these huge companies get full control over if an unused game IP gets made & they do everything they can so no other versions of a game idea will ever come out. Even if there's a huge fan base around certain ideas and there's a ton of passionate devs out there dying to make a version of a certain video game idea.. that frustrates me beyond belief}
Please do a video covering how Lethal Company getting into Fortnite and the game isn't a year old. It blows my mind...

I've been a big music listener for 25 years, but I wish you good luck as well as other future devs out there to create their own franchises that someday will be just as popular as the mainstream Triple A (AAA) companies have done prior to the 2010s.
great video!
also, I like your mustache, 10/10 mustache
Studios are losing their rep, and that's an excellent chance for indie devs like me to bring their best foot forward and steal that big pie slice
I'm not even working with my buddies, I'm literally the one and only developer working on my own game, and it's been almost 2 years since I started working on it
Is it hard? Yes, yes it's hard, and my game is purely mechanics as we speak, from Crafting to Construction to Ranged, Magic and Melee Attacks, to Skills that you can level up, Quests, Shops, Inventories, Armors, Enemies being your Allies through dialogue invitations, etc, etc, etc... It's been 19 wild months since I started that thing, and there's not a single video online to show what I've been doing just yet
But I've been through enough hard stuff that I know I'm not giving up now
There's no environment just yet, but coding-wise, it's computationally light and will probably run on even 10-year old hardware at 30FPS (it's being built on a GTX1650 laptop. That's old and weak compared to modern systems). The goal is to make something EVERYONE can enjoy, and have its own Unique twists too (which is also why the graphics are low-poly)
Whenever I feel like it's even barely ready, I'll start sharing footage online
The stache like that just screams that the body cam is getting turned off
Everything hinges on independent developers, but therein also lies the predicament. Indies have the potential to reinvent the industry, but they need to first consolidate themselves and _have the ambition_ to become AAA. Only then will we have studios with not only creativity, but the resources and manpower to make creativity the new standard in the industry.
Summer game fest was even swept by an indie game: killer bean
I greatly value the selfless services you want to do for indies, but Id also hope you wouldn't feel like you can't do anything except promote indies. If you're having fun doing crazy stuff, and we're having fun coming along for the ride, that's all that matters.
*I've just been playing older games from 10-20 years ago and I'm having a BLAST 🙌 I do intend to script a game one day....something with chatgpt* 👌
The Indies will become the new AAA.
Gone are the days of "gems"
the corporate sector of the game industry will continue to become more crooked, as everyone from Monsanto corporation to the Saudi-investment fund are dumping money into the AAA scene.
You just need to eliminate the greed, and I'm on board, but Tarkov is a prime example of greed being the problem.
i can't tell if it's an incorrect focuslength or dirty camera, but whatever it is, it makes your face look weird and distorted, almost AI like
1:11 what is this game?
I watched the summer games fest. I don't have any hope
Dude has a sick Mustache
make a video on hades 2 when you play it, i think its phenomenal and even better than the original
Wow 😮
I've got an idea for a cool game. wrote a cool story for it. will learn UE5 soon. Wish me luck!
Every always f forget about nintendo how their AAA and how they put out a lot of good game yet indie is the future its so silly , the take isnt wrong but please put some respect on Nintendo's name
I don't have hope
Indie Games suck too, there's hardly any creativity and most indie games are just copies of retro games or gimick games that are mediocre. Plus with all the new modern tropes being added to future indie games, the use of AI, the future for gaming is anything but positive.
No i don't .. To much manipulation to much live service , Greed to much Micro Transactions , battle passes subscriptions ..
Remember next time that GateKeeping is absolutely necessary.
Just play indie games lol
Refuse to buy garbage AAA games, simple as that.
FiRsT
Second :D
Lol no be realistic
Third :D
Less of the incoherent ramble videos please. You're better than that.
Most indie games suck tbh
