  • Here we walk through a tutorial of tips I’ve picked up for advanced Kontakt multi output routing in Logic Pro X. We'll setup Kontakt Studio Drummer multi out and route the individual drum mics in Kontakt to Logic Pro.

My main observation having watched your other video was "why are the hats so quiet?" - and lo and behold, you have a video exactly for that too! SUBSCRIBED.

🙏 Thanks for the sub! Yeah, it took me a lot of googling to get a decent handle on Kontakt routing haha, so I'm glad it's saving some other people time.

You can avoid the hihat volume problem by just defaulting Kontakt to open with 20 stereo channels(no mono channels), for example, and routing all the drum pieces, the overhead, the room, and the compressed channels to those 20 stereo channels.

ah interesting, so just keeping the panning from Kontakt? That would work - I just prefer to pan in Logic and so I don't have to worry about what the panning setting is within Kontakt. Definitely agree on routing room, overhead, etc to stereo channels. What's the compressed channel though?

@@CradleCat Yes, keep the panning from Kontakt. Keep everything. What the heck :). I am referring to the CMP Mono and CMP Stereo strip channels in the Abbey Road 80s Drummer that bring the 80s feel. I thought you were using the 80s Drummer in your video.

Hey thanks for these two vids... I've been working on this all day! Have you by any chance figured out how to actually bounce the midi to separate audio tracks, once you've got all the routing down? I can't get Logic to record the audio signal :-(

Hey glad they helped you out! And yeah - i usually go to the individual multi out mixer channels > right click > Create Track. Then, you can select those tracks when you’re bouncing tracks for the project. There might be some more advanced options for Bounce All Tracks that include channel options, but I’d have to check. I’ll probably do a part 3 video on those options lol.
Another easier option (if goal is not exporting stems) is just freezing the tracks so it takes cpu load off during playback.

@@mgWadell Thanks for your quick reply ! I managed to do it by putting my midi on a multi-output track and then bouncing the multi-output to new tracks. But now the sound is crap, so I must be missing something somewhere. I think it's crazy NI have made it this hard to figure out...

And what's the goal for bouncing here - saving CPU, or bouncing for stems for mixing / remixing? Also - When you say you've already set the midi on a multi-output track - did you already set it up like the earlier Kontakt routing video I put in the description?

    • @davidchiversmusic

@@CradleCat Bouncing for mixing. For example, getting the kick and bass on a group buss. I know I could do that without actually bouncing out the audio, but it just feels weird not being able to see my audio at all, I wanted to work with it as if it were recorded. What's nice is you can set the bleed on each piece of kit as you like it, which gives it a nice sense of realism. And yes, I set up the Kontakt routing as you described in order to do this.

    • @CradleCat

Ah ok, yeah - to get the visual, I think you're on the right track then. 2 ideas I can think of (for why you said it sounds like crap now haha) that might be different would be how it's bouncing. I've not actually bounced those to new tracks like you've described, so really just brainstorming here lol.
      1) Try bouncing those multi outs to new files, then just importing them back into the project (I haven't had issues when bouncing tracks to stems for mixing, so maybe try doing it like this externally and importing instead of bouncing within the project).
      2) You could set up a new audio track for each multi-out > route the output of each multi out midi channel to it's corresponding audio track's input (might need to do that via a bus) > then arm all those audio tracks and record all of them. Maaaybe that would act differently than bouncing?

@@CradleCat Thank YOU!! I'm doing it right now. You actually already answered my question over her that I asked in the first video. I guess I could route every cymbal to it's own track in Logic by using the technique you explain at 6:22 right? I want to process every piece of the drum kit in mono on Logic tracks .-D Thanks again and kind regards from the Netherlands.

@One Eyed Jack yup! you could do that if you wanted individual mics instead of just general Overhead mic 👍

So, let’s say I followed both of these tutorials and loved the setup so much that I wanted to make three of four similar drum setups (maybe using different kits?) and call them up quickly. How would one save, modify, and recall without going through these steps every time? Or is this just the cost of doing business? Thanks!

Hey thanks for checking out my channel! And yeah - here's a video where I walk through setting up and saving presents for Kontakt. ruclips.net/video/jfK33Om2ZeM/видео.html Not sure if you'll be able to apply a single preset to multiple kits (haven't tried that yet) - but hopefully this saves you time! 🙌
