No kidding when you say it grow fast! I'm zone 9, Northern California and planted this beautiful bush in June, it's doubled in size. You have to be careful when watering, the branches are delicate and I've snapped a few a couple if times. I just plopped those in the ground and they seem to be taking off. The bees love this plant!
A friend just gave me a pretty substantial propagated bush of black knight. They dig them up and divide them and have probably 25 on their property! Super excited to put it in the ground after watering this video! Hello from Harnett county NC!
The one thing you didn't mention is that it really benefits from deadheading. The showy flower spikes turn brownish when they go over, and not only does deadheading help to keep the bush looking nicer, but it encourages it to pump out even more flowers.
I have had a butterfly bush in my front yard for 6 years and it grows more than 4 ft. every year. I live in NC near the border of SC so I think I am in zone 7b but I have to cut it back every year so it fills out nicely and I love it's beauty. It is in the middle of my vegetable garden so it does bring in the bees for me. I really do have to cut it back each year or it would be more intrusive than it already is. Thanks for your videos. I do enjoy them so keep up the good work. Happy Gardening!!
I'm in zone 6b, east tennessee. I bought a black knight and it did well for only one or two years. I did see several babies around the yard in the second year, which was exciting, and the color was the same dark purple. But they all died the next year. Every single one! We never did cut them back because I read that you don't need to. But even the babies died. I'm leary of spending the money on another. Bought some seed to try.
Hello Jim, Great video on the Black Knight Butterfly Bush. I am planting my Black Knight in a Butterfly, Hummingbird garden. I am planting to allow about 4-6 ft all around. But could you tell me what is the best way to center the bush and when looking at the bush in the pot, how do you know what side should face forward? In other words, when placing the bush in the ground, how can you tell what side would look good facing out in front and facing out backwards? Thanks again for the tips on gardening. Where I am placing the bush does get a lot of light too! Thanks Again!!!
Here in New Mexico my Black night butterfly bush would get over eight feet tall even with pruning. I made the mistake of planting it close to the foundation and a walkway. Mine also needed a lot of water. Not that drought tolerant. Very fragrant and butterflys covered it every year.
What would make a black knight flower turn white? I’ve had mine for 4/5 years now and after the first year, the purple blooms turned white and haven’t turned back since. It’s still healthy enough so I don’t know what happened. Cannot find any information on it anywhere
I am from Cyprus, its a warm country, now December we have around 18 degrees Celsius during the day and at night it falls to average 7 Celcius. I planted a Black Knight Butterfly Bush in a container during last summer. It became bushy and tall but it did not bloom. Now in December I see that started having blooms and I am wondering if it is wise to cut it back during Spring. I will appreciate any advise. Thank you
Hi. I ordered some black knight butterfly bushes online. 3 of them. Two came looking great and the third came looking different. The leaves were skinnier and not nearly as wide. The green color even is different. Any idea why?
Zone 8A. Just extending my existing butterfly garden where I am harvesting Monarchs. I want to put these in a filtered sun area too. Will they bloom well? It gets 2.5 hours of straigt sun between 11:30 and 2:00 but other than that it is filtered.
When I got my black knight bush the blooms were dark purple. I planted it in a large felt 5 gallon pot. I no longer have dark purple blooms but just regular purple. What happened????
How can I save my butterfly bush? I planted it 2 weeks ago and it had a few yellowed leaves on it when I got it and I thought when planted it would stop. There are more leaves that are turning yellow every day and now they’re yellowed with burnt or darkened tips. It has rained quite a lot and not sure if the roots are rotted and aren’t getting any of the nutrients? I did mix half and half gardening soil and native soil and back filled with that mix. The soil wasn’t great when I moved here in the spring and have planted lots of perennials and annuals with the same method of backfilling and I haven’t had issues like this. I feel like I bought it with this “disease” or “deficiency”. Not sure. Have been trying to research on the web when I ran into your video. I bought a black knight butterfly bush as well. Is there any saving it? Please help me... 😓
Hi Jim! I just received three Of these butterfly bushes for my property (ordered online) and am in zone 6. Our night time low temps are hitting 35 degrees. Is it safe to plant them in the ground at this point? Thanks in advance.
I have a new purple butterfly bush that is getting yellow leaves up the center of the bush. It is blossoming nicely but I am wondering if I made a mistake by adding compost to the dirt we have in the yard and perhaps it is too much for it. I water it a lot as it has been in the 90's and seems to want a lot of water. Also the foliage just doesn't seem as full as it should. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks. I did plant it a little above the ground with very little mulch away from the bush.
Only a few of the new dwarf ones are sterile and honestly I bet even those could cross with an older variety at some point. If you are in an area that butterfly bushes are invasive you probably should just pass on all of them
ok i bought one of these and put it in the ground and it just completely died....it literally looks like a bunch of sticks now...what could i have done wrong?? i bought it mid summer, dug a nice deep whole for it, watered every few days (though not as often because my soil is clay based which can hold moisture longer) and left it alone! i even gave it plant food!
If you can don't dig it out yet give it until next spring .when I cut one of mine and planned a baby of it somewhere else it did the same thing to me but came back with new branches the next year . Good luck
@@Zaradoingstuff Ok thanks! my hubby is giving me a bunch of guff about it because we live in area that has an HOA and hes worried we'll get a fine because it doesnt look the way it did when we bought it = /. We're in San Diego so im not too concerned about the cold but the thing just wont come back! Lucky their still small and we dont get snow here so im just hoping it'll be ok. I planted a second one right next to it and it did the same thing! ughhhh. Ill give it time and hide it behind some other plants.
I just received mine from online. I bought them from someone else. When I got them out of the box, there was a long branch in a small container with potting soil in it. Is this normal bc it most definitely does not look like the ones you're holding?
Depends on the money you spent. 1) Anything under $5/- plus $10 fr shipping is what you have gotten. 2) $10/- you will get few leaves. 3) If you pay more than $15 to 23/- then you will get what he's holding! BTW - I too got my blue Butterfly bush "Nanho" fr $4.99 (plus shipping) from Four seasons nursery this month. It looks totally dead - but I went ahead and planted it. Keeping my hopes high! Since you have planted (3) years ago, did your plant take off well?
I may give this bush one more season and if it doesnt take off this may go back to buzz midnight which did better than this one though BM is a "dwarf" type.
I live in northern Washington after fall and winter my shrub list all its leafs and is woody. I’m afraid of cutting it back because it never really grew in size. What should I do?
I have had mine out all summer watering it well because of the extreme heat and it flowers ok but is currently only 2' tall, truly disappointed in this bush.
There was a fly on his right cheek the 2nd half of the video and he just left it there I didn’t hear anything he said I was just looking at the fly lol wondering if it was a smudge on my phone lol

By far the best gardening channel on RUclips - fast to the point explanations! 👍🏼
Thank you for that
Definitely intrigued about growing them into a 10ft tree vs a bush

I love these plants. I planted two dwarf butterfly bushes and ended up dying 😢. Would love to try again next year.
I just got one ! Planting tomorrow ! Thanks !
Thank you for your videos! They are wonderful! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🤠
Thank You for this wonderful video.
thank you for mentioning calif zone 9 and when to prune back. I never know what to listen to other zone hints given
When the purple flowers die do I trim them or just leave them . I have it in a huge pot till I decide where I’m going to put it

They can definitely get wild. Lots of new dwarf varieties which is nice.
What do you do with the blooms once they die and are brown? Do you clip them back or just leave them?
Which variety buddliea has the most vigorous growth?
Great video

Yellowish leaves on one plant only????

How does this compare to "Buddleia" Miss Violet butterfly bush? Thank you for the great videos - they are always educational and very helpful.
I love the miss series. They stay short 4/5’ and full. Black knight is taller

They will grow anywhere

If they are still dormant it is fine. If they are awake, I would wait.
question after a flower gets pollinated does the flower start to form a seed? really need to know
Yes, they form a seed, but the plants aren't generally true to seed. Meaning you won't likely get the same color flower.

will these be ok to plant in a small raised bed?
+Carrah Easterly This one gets pretty big. May want to look at Blue Chip Butterfly Bush
It should grow to be a size that matches the container
@@lepidlover0557 uhhh...no
Have a Butterfly bush and it started to sprout this spring but now it looks like We
Lost it .What do we have to do to keep it going when we replace it with a new one.We live in zone five. Thanks Dave .
Is this a sterile cultivar or do I have to worry about it seeding itself?

That doesn't surprise me from mail order. They are fast growing, so it should be fine.

@@tonyathorne9863 Depends on preference, but you tend to get more butterflies the more you cluster flowers together.

Mine is completely dry with no leaves just figs. Will it revive on its own if I water it or no?
My butterfly bush has wilted it had full sun and moist all I did was move it.
I had three i planted around the yard...but sll.qere killed...one by full sun heat...two by cold.

I would just pinch the tips to force new growth and put some fertilizer, but don't cut the plant down till its starting to get big.
