I've seen other videos and all about giant treelike budleias, mine is just a baby planted in march, have grown a lot but no blooms yet and I wondered if I need to prune it despite the size or just let it be till next year.... I planted milk weed in my garden last year. Only 2 came up and never put on seedpods. This year I don't know how but it looks like I planted a Milkweed patch and next to my red worm tube I have hollyhocks. Thrilled at all the butterflies it has attracted. I've only seen a couple monarchs sadly. But thrilled to have them because the deer ate all my butterfly weed that the monarchs normally lay eggs on. So hoping they find the milk weed.

Highly invasive and easy to grow 😏 Sorry for the smirk but my Butterfly Bush has been high maintenance for 8 years! It hasnt grown since I put it in the ground. Its still about 4ft tall and not full - you can see the inner stalks still. It always starts off spring producing lush green leaves and looks as if it is well. Then it gets lots of deep lilac flowers; but like clockwork within 2 months into spring -- it starts getting yellow leaves OVER NIGHT! They drop with the touch and the green leaves are filled with little holes as if something is eating the entire plant in one night! I have scoured the plant in early morning, near every branch (and EVERY SPRING) with lots of patience and I cannot find a grasshopper, caterpillar, or any plant eater. The worst thing i found one year were spider mites. The poor thing looks sick by June of every year and gets pretty bare. It stops producing flowers even though I prune of the blooms proper. Last week it was the most gorgeous I have seen in 8 years HOWEVER, within the past 2 days - i noticed the leaves aren't as bright and healthy and i have pure yellow leaves beginning - and I mean literally over night the entire leaf becomes solid yellow. I could see all the holes on the green leaves by the time I got 6 ft away. I wanted to cry. I just told my husband that I'm done trying to successfully grow a Butterfly Bush! 8 years is enough! I'll be having him take it out - unless I can find a solution but so far, year after year, nothing works. I have another bush growing about 8 feet away, same side of house and same fence line. That bush is so prolific and big, i have to stay on it every 2 weeks lest it take over! I figure 8 years is more than enough. I assume its just a genetic problem, if that even a thing. Invasive - sheesh.
Hi I am sad to learn you’re having such a terrible time with your Butterfly Bush. Here’s a thought, have your soil tested for iron levels. Iron deficiency can cause yellowing of the leaves. The butterfly bush grew wild in my area. They grow along the road, highway, ditch. They are bulletproof. They can be planted in full sun. Drought tolerant. It's a new record for my area this year. We have had only a dayish of rain since July 1ish maybe before that. Today is August 18. That is not normal for our area hardiness zone 7/8 three hours North of Seattle WA into Canada. It's hot over here. 😬😬😬
@@TinthiaClemant here my normal weather in the summer is average around mid 80's and some rain. This year and last year average between mid 90's to 100's. Majority of houses here do not have AC. This year from late June until today August 18, 2022 we have maybe a day of rain. So this year I have seen people are planting a lot panicle Hydrangeas than macrophyllas.
@@tiffanienguyen7174 Macs don’t like drying out, that’s for sure but even my established panicles are dropped and dropping leaves. No rain and a water ban. 🥵
@@TinthiaClemant we have a ban on watering grass but not on flowers, plants and vegetables 🤷. That was set before 2019 haven't changed yet. Although I have noticed that people are more water consumption conscious.
So I planted one this year & it hasn’t been adding more blooms this summer. Not sure what I’m doing or can it just take a year to root? It seems to be getting bigger but not really any blooms, do you know why?
Hi, this is not the first time I’ve heard of issues with Butterfly Bushes this year but Sometimes newly planted bushes need a year to adjust to their new home and don’t bloom all that great. Make sure it’s in a spot that gets plenty of sun. If you’re getting any growth then it has taken root. I recommend you keep it deeply watered but not soggy. Water around the drip line using a soaker hose or drip method. Don’t water the crown. They need water to develop strong roots in the first year but they don’t like to sit in wet soil. A deep watering once a week should suffice unless you’re getting adequate rainfall. If you didn’t work compost into the planting hole add some now, working it into the soil around the plant using a trowel, then water well. Give it time to adjust. I wish you happy gardening. 🌻
Thank you, yea I’m wondering if it’s not going quite enough Sun, need to double check exactly how much as it’s planted in front of my house & it does get shaded by early afternoon but I I’ve tried to do all the rest with compost & dead heading so it doesn’t spread But thank you for your wisdom & insight

You didn't mention how amazing they smell that's the whole point I grow em for. From what I'm seeing lantern flys seem to hate em. ? Did you know or is there any information on that?
Invasive? My butterfly bush was almost killed by voles. These devils just bit on the base of the plant. Now I have to wrap some plastic around its base to protect it from further damage. LOL

Hot and dry here too. Butterfly bushes are crowding out native vegetation along waterways. Stay cool and happy gardening. 🌻

If you’re getting any growth then it has taken root. I recommend you keep it deeply watered but not soggy. Water around the drip line using a soaker hose or drip method. Don’t water the crown. There are some BB now that are not considered invasive and dont spread seed and dont need dead heading unless you want to.
