I love these little Mazda2's. You had so much fun on those twisties. I do have to say tho, the lack of an arm rest in the front has to be one of the biggest zonks yet. The XLE trim has a ton of nice features and is almost at $20k, and no armrest.
Mazda 2 is reliable in my country and it has a better quality than the cheaply made real southeast asian Yaris. The european yaris is really good though.
Have the 2017, and overall great car, never had any major issues. The only thing I can say is the tire size for it are apparently uncommon with many of the tire shops around me, so it may be best to call ahead of time if you know you're going to need them and get them ordered. Edit: just realized this is the hatchback, so idk but may still be the same tires
Given the current Cover-19 economy the need for such a car has never been greater especially with the Honda Fit no longer an option in the U.S. at the end of 2020. I was sad to see the Mazda 2 leave the Mazda lineup some years ago but it great to see it come back as a Toyota and with a real transmission no less, not a CVT. Thanks for the review.
My second comment years later- averaging over 40m mpg, 70k miles, no issues. We checked out a Corolla and Camry, but the Yaris/Mazda is easier to get in and out of being inches higher off the ground, so we are going for another four years. t's still fun ton drive :-)
I got a 2012 Toyota yaris hatchback 4 Dr and I just absolutely love it , it has gotten me so many places and it still going strong !!! The prices it takes to fill up is definitely cost friendly, milage is fantastic!! I love this one ❤, beautiful car for sure
I still drive my 2010 Yaris, with 140.000 km on the counter it drives just like the first day. The few problems i had were fixed in warranty. The AC had a leak, the front suspension made a weird noise and they had a few callbacks because of the airbags.

Nearly the same price and i have a Beautiful almost new LEXUS ES350 !! Of course comparing apples to oranges but $ for $ I’m happy i made my decision to get a ES350 ! The Yaris is basic transportation and $ for $ is worth it...
@@RaitisRides thank you fir the message. I watch almost all of your videos. I test drive many cars. I think the vehicle will be the Honda HRV. Mazda is very comfortable. HRV more practical. Kona was not comfortable in the front seats. Did not like the Tesla model 3 at all due to the brake applying every time I took my foot off the gas. Also seats too low. Thanks for all the videos. Amazing!
"Maybe a bicycle or someone running along the side of the road would be a good competitor" LMAO classic Raiti! You're a pioneer of getting people who are into sports cars into watching videos about daily commuters with your comedic touch.
Yeah and get the Corolla with the CVT that has had recalls on it already... lol Whereas the Mazda powertrains have been tried and proven now, bulletproof 6-speed transmissions and engines. The CX-3 has actually been rated as one of the most reliable cars because of the non-existant issues with it - and that car is basically a Mazda 2. And if you're still in doubt look at the older Scion iA or Yaris iA, you won't find that they had any issues with them.
This would be great for my granddaughter! Toyota is Always a reliable car! Who knows, I might would trade my car in too if a Moonroof is optional, always loved the hatchback style! ♥️
Just got a 2017 Yaris iA for 14k taxes and everything included 2 days ago with 27k miles, a few scratches. I absolutely love it! How do you think the price is for how I got it?
Nice review, a nice little runabout, especially for the city! You can park this thing almost anywhere. Corolla, great car too but also more expensive. They both have their place in the market, start w Yaris, graduate to Corolla when funds are in greater supply and drag racing people all bicycles becomes old! 🤪
The rest of the world actually gets a new Yaris this year. It´s an 3-Cylinder Hybrid with about 115 PS. All from Toyota. The USA get´s an old rebadged Mazda 2.
@@timrichter4688 I might be biased since I had been driving a Mazda 2 for 2 years, but I'd much rather own a rebadged Mazda than a Toyota. As far as I'm concerned, EU/JDM Yaris hasn't been any good, and 3rd world Yaris is basically trash on wheels. Granted, I don't know much about the next Yaris, and the Mazda 2 is quite far from a new car. But it's good for what it is. Also it'd be nice for you guys to have the 4x4 GR Yaris, but I guess that's out of the picture.
@@thatcopenguy now you have a 4WD Yaris called GR Yaris (only for Europe and Asia market). It is 1.6 three cylinders engine with turbo that has around 268 HP.It looks pretty good dude check it
Good review. Trying to decide what car to add to the family. Already have a gas guzzling charger haha. A fuel efficient car for NYC would be great. Going to watch your corolla and Mazda 3 vid also
Subaru 86 BMW Supra Mazda Yaris What’s next? Buick Camry?? I’d get a real Toyota Corolla over the Yaris ... that way you’d get Toyota reliability and build quality.
Its a shame we don't get the Yards GR. 3 cylinder turbo makes 270 hp. Wide body, manual. This car a 18k..means financing to lease about 10k with interest rate. That outs this car at roughly $250 to $277 a month depending on milage. 0 down with only the 1st month down, tax, tag, title. Go up to the camry and pay the extra 30 a month. I don't know. This car is small lacks the get up power to merge on highways should you have two passengers. It's a good NYC or crowded city car. But In States like Texas Florida etc etc. You need a car with more substsnce. Better sound insulation and more power.
I love your honest reviews. Really wish Toyota had kept the sedan body style as an option for the Yaris. Some folks like the security offered by a lockable trunk. Also, no turbo-charged option? The biggest competitor for the Yaris is going to be the Chevy Sonic. At least on the LT RS trim, Chevy offers a turbo. It may not look impressive with a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds, but that's definitely better than over 10 seconds for the Yaris. I love the front-end looks of the Yaris, but in the sub-compact class you have better options for the money. Also.... Not even a folding arm-rest?? Even a Chevy Sonic offers a basic folding arm-rest for the driver. Yaris has Push-button Start but no arm-rest. I don't get that. Makes no sense.
Are u saying u can't lock the trunk, that doesn't make sense? They should make the armrest as an option! Also, need a Moonroof and blind spot mirrors if it doesn't have it, otherwise it's Perfect! ♥️. Always loved smaller cars, sorry can't abide the gas guzzlers.
Push to Start is standard on Yaris, but optional on Corolla. The previous gen Corolla has round air vents. The new 2020 Corolla got rid of the hand brake and replaced with automatic brake
I just wish that the Yaris was still available in a 2-dr model. Also, the dashboard could be made to nor look ao cheap. The exterior styling of this 2020 Yaris looks great! I'm going to check it out, since I'm in the market for a very small and inexpensive but reliable car.
After watching your video I decided to go to my local dealership and test drive the Yaris and also the Corolla. I may be in the minority but I actually liked the Yaris better than the Corolla. I am now the proud owner of a 2020 Yaris Sedan. Great little car so far. Definitely would recommend, plus the price was right under 19K out the door.
Literally perfect for a daily. My pride and joy sits for pleasure only. Last windshield rock chip made me think that's it I need something I don't care about, a workhorse, good mpg, practical, reliable (mazda has gone up in reliability I'm just a little iffy on GDI and carbon). This car seems to fit the bill. Good review.
Nice description, good review. So no manual shift nor a sedan anymore to choose between, darn. This is a perfect retirement car! Small income with no surprises wanted, yet I'm used to good handling cars. I love my 2019 sedan Smooth, quiet, fun, reliable , cheap to buy and operate. One again-It looks so good after a lifetime of cars, perfect for RETIREMENT, not just kids. Who needs to spend over $19,000 for a new car?
Bought a Toyota Yaris from Motor World (Wilkes Barre), got a good price on the car, and it has been a wonderful little get around car. It is comfortable, easy to get around in, excellent for shopping and great fuel economy. Put it in the sport position, and the car changes attitude, it wants to move, now if I need something bigger, well my Toyota Tacoma handles that, I have liked Toyota's since 1977, but found out the only thing that destroys Toyota's more then anything is other drivers on the road. One other best car I have owned was the Ford Fiesta, and had a GMC truck during that time. the GMC truck quit at about 124,000 but the best truck I ever had was a Ford Ranger, it gave out at 348,000 and sort of happy that if finally died, the seats gave out at about 220,000 miles. Yes, I am one of those guys that drives a car until the wheels fall off or until someone hits and destroys it.
I'm glad they went to a more traditional design compared to the older models that had the speedometer in the middle of the dash for everyone to see. The Yaris has always scared me since I saw the IIHS small overlap crash tests. Not good! But hopefully they've improved since then.
There are several pluses you mentioned with this being a rebadged Mazda. The six speed traditional automatic vs. a CVT (amazing to find on a small car these days) and Mazda's emphasis on handling. Some bemoan the fact that they don't think it will have Toyota quality and reliability, but I've owned several Mazdas in the 2000s and they had quite reliable drivetrains. Plus the interiors and paint held up very well after years sitting in the California sun. If they're still that good I wouldn't worry.
so this may not exactly have to do with the car itself. I seem to notice a difference in sound when I honk my horn vs lock my car with my key fob. the lock function is louder then my actual horn. is this supposed to be this way
meanwhile in Europe, Toyota actually made their own Yaris instead of a rebadged Mazda while Mazda now supposedly wants a Mazda 2 that in truth is a rebadged Yaris
I would have to say, especially after watching the test drive, that this is a great entry level vehicle, albeit being a Mazda 2. Sometimes I wonder why collaborations between companies, like the Isuzu original Honda Passport, and the two series of FWD Chevy Novas, that were actually Toyota Corollas. But Mazda seems to have increase quality and reliability, as opposed to Nissan, and having a non CVT automatic transmission, and their good handling, it's a plus.
Thanks for the review on this -I’ve always had a Toyota or Honda -my wife has the 2019 Honda HRV - please help me out on which one you would go with 2019 Honda Fit or Yaris hatchback 2020? Also do have a review on the Honda Fit (2019) ?
Thanks for the review man... the car seems super fine to me but my friend says that the corolla is more comfortable(?) so thats the only drawback to me

I'm so glad I got my 2018 Toyota Yaris IA before they chopped the back end. it looks exactly the same only mine is a sedan body with more cargo space.
The induction sound at higher rpms on the Yaris sounds surprisingly good!!🤘
I know right!
Raiti's Rides by the way love your channel man good stuff!!
No fake front vents.. I think they been watching your channel Joe. It looks pretty good.
Thanks brother!
most ppl buy toyota for reliability, so if this is just a mazda, might as well get a mazda or corolla if u want that reliability
That is a very good point!
but mazda is rated at 159 problems per 100 cars. So your buying a re-branded mazda, which is an unreliable brand all together.
It is not that simple man....
Please provide the years of research you've done on most (sic) ppl, by which I mean you might mean people, but are unable to spell
195 55 16 they fit and are cheapppp
The rubbing of the seat sold me. “Very durable.” You never fail to entertain.
I love that 6 speed auto over the cvt in my corolla.
I totally agree with you!
That's what worries me about buying a new car, A CRAPPY CVT transmission, that has to be replaced if damaged!
@@danielmpr me too
I got a 2012 Toyota yaris hatchback 4 Dr and I just absolutely love it , it has gotten me so many places and it still going strong !!! The prices it takes to fill up is definitely cost friendly, milage is fantastic!! I love this one ❤, beautiful car for sure
Owner of 2007 yaris love it, not a single problem
Thanks for sharing that!
@alejandro mine had 7 year old battery still started in 0 degrees. Amazing little car, we own 3 yaris in family. Very reliable great mpg cheap to own.
I still drive my 2010 Yaris, with 140.000 km on the counter it drives just like the first day. The few problems i had were fixed in warranty. The AC had a leak, the front suspension made a weird noise and they had a few callbacks because of the airbags.
Does the Yaris not have an armrest?? Or just this model? Thanks
@@BG-ig6fd mine doesnot,
I follow u because you review not only high price cars but budget cars also. 👍
Hey bro, you are very honesty, and thank you 4 keep it real.
Thanks for saying that! It really means a lot!
I "Just" purchased the 2020 Yaris LE Sedan in Icicle for UNDER 17K and am VERY HAPPY with it!
Sedan actually has a LARGER Trunk Space than the Hatchback!
Congrats!
another great video Joe ! This video really put my recent purchase in perspective: I bought my 2013 Lexus ES350 this past April for $18,700 with 30,009 miles !! I’m the 2nd owner. Nearly the same price and i have a Beautiful almost new LEXUS ES350 !! Of course comparing apples to oranges but $ for $ I’m happy i made my decision to get a ES350 ! The Yaris is basic transportation and $ for $ is worth it...
Thanks for letting me share it with you Stephen. I thing you found a great car!
Raiti's Rides thanks Joe ! Yeah my ES350 is rock solid! Amazing reliability, I’ll be holding on to this one for several years!!
I bought a Toyota Yaris in 2007. Has 160,000 miles on it. Still running good.
That is so awesome! Thanks for sharing that!
Thanks for letting me share the laughs with you! that really means a lot. I appreciate you letting me bring the variety to you!
Good for someone’s first car but I’d opt for the Corolla. Thanks Joe! Have a safe trip to L.A. 🛫👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
I am right there with you Larry! Thanks for the well wishes!
L S agreed! You actually get a Toyota - build quality and reliability - if you get a Corolla!
@@mikezerker6925 for an extra $3000
@@darnelacat totally worth the extra money if you plan on keeping it long term.
Yeah and get the Corolla with the CVT that has had recalls on it already... lol
Whereas the Mazda powertrains have been tried and proven now, bulletproof 6-speed transmissions and engines.
Thanks. I've been waiting for a review of this car.
This class of cars does not get enough attention. Please do More.
Toyota : "we're going to stop making boring cars."
Also Toyota : *outsources to companies who actually make fun to drive cars.*
touche.
Going to watch your corolla and Mazda 3 vid also
Thanks man!
I've had one for 6 months now love it but mine's a 2019. I have the 6 speed stick and it get's 44MPG on HWY then 34 city
I tested one Monday.ihave a 15 versa note with 15k miles and right now I am scared to death I might trade for one of these.
I’m with you. I love the fact they didn’t go CVT for the transmission.
Toyota CVTs have been reliable so far. Time will tell.
Thanks Matt!
It is more of the terrible driving experience!
Raiti's Rides what’s more of a terrible driving experience?
@@RaitisRides Sure. They dont gear up or down. But they are much quicker.
Subaru 86
BMW Supra
Mazda Yaris
What’s next? Buick Camry??
I’d get a real Toyota Corolla over the Yaris ... that way you’d get Toyota reliability and build quality.
LMAO!!!
So what is the advantage of this Yaris over Mazda 2?
The Toyota Yaris is available as a sedan too. It too is based off the Mazda 2. It's the only one that offers the base L trim.
8:02 Joe's crazy side LOL 🤣🤣
I have to have a little bit of fun!
@@RaitisRides 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 R.I.P Seat
What beautiful skies in your neck of the woods.
Thanks man!
I have a 08 Toyota Yaris I love it good mileage up to 44 mpg on the highway around town low thirties
Tell me about it!
The chief is back at it again with the great uploads!👍
Trust me I have been working hard! Flying out for the LA Auto Show tomorrow.
Raiti's Rides nice man! Looking forward to see what you put out brother!
@@User14947 It's going to be insane!
Thanks for that info!
it has a ACTUAL transmission, and NOT a cvt. That is a HUGE selling point to me.
THIS WAS GREAT, I'M CONVINCED!
I am so glad that i could bring it to you!
I just wish that the Yaris was still available in a 2-dr model. Also, the dashboard could be made to nor look ao cheap. The exterior styling of this 2020 Yaris looks great! I'm going to check it out, since I'm in the market for a very small and inexpensive but reliable car.
I totally agree with you!
I'm pretty sure it doesnt only come in a hatchback. The sedan has been on sale since it was the Scion iA.
I’m sitting in a 2020 sedan Yaris right now as i learn about the Toyota line up
After watching your video I decided to go to my local dealership and test drive the Yaris and also the Corolla. I may be in the minority but I actually liked the Yaris better than the Corolla. I am now the proud owner of a 2020 Yaris Sedan. Great little car so far. Definitely would recommend, plus the price was right under 19K out the door.
It does drive nice.
Why do you like the 2020 yaris more than 2020 corolla?
What about the spare tire? Is a slim one? Is a full size? Is it the repair kit?
I wonder... What about reliability?
Is this car as reliable as Mazda?
Or as reliable as a Toyota?
It would be very reliable.
It doesn't only come as a hatchback. Also, there are multiple trim levels.
Does the Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris differ in price or warranty? Is the Mazda 2 available in a base model?
Nope
Literally perfect for a daily. My pride and joy sits for pleasure only. Last windshield rock chip made me think that's it I need something I don't care about, a workhorse, good mpg, practical, reliable (mazda has gone up in reliability I'm just a little iffy on GDI and carbon). This car seems to fit the bill. Good review.
Thanks for sharing that input from your experience!
I need a simple car 🚗 for work thanks for the review

I love my 2019 sedan Smooth, quiet, fun, reliable , cheap to buy and operate. One again-It looks so good after a lifetime of cars, perfect for RETIREMENT, not just kids. Who needs to spend over $19,000 for a new car?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one!
What I don’t understand is why the US gets a rebadged Mazda 2 instead of the Yaris that Toyota actually builds?
Yes Thank God I will buy one for myself
Unibody cars don’t have a chassis because they aren’t body on frame. They are referred to as a platform.
Good review.
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
I just checked the Toyota website to build.. this does not have the same $195 center armrest option as the Yaris sedan. Why not?
Thanks for sharing that great input and perspective from your ownership.
Only hatchback? They still come in sedan version. The worst part is the manual transmission only comes with the sedans. That makes no sense to me.
I love this Mazda 2 it's so cute...at least it's not a CVT
This is so very true!
I'm glad they went to a more traditional design compared to the older models that had the speedometer in the middle of the dash for everyone to see. The Yaris has always scared me since I saw the IIHS small overlap crash tests. Not good! But hopefully they've improved since then.
I totally agree with you Herman!
Thanks for sharing your great points Jeff!
so this may not exactly have to do with the car itself. I seem to notice a difference in sound when I honk my horn vs lock my car with my key fob. the lock function is louder then my actual horn. is this supposed to be this way
I have a 2003 matrix, and I love my car, but it's getting up there. This yaris seems like the upgrade of the matrix.
Get the manual! Small cars are much better when you row your gears :)
I own a Japanese built, 2010 TOYOTA Yaris, I would not touch this with a 10 foot pole. But I admit, it looks nice and modern.
Yaris owner. They are great cars. No issues!
Thanks for sharing that great input on this one.
How do you operate the inbuilt camera attached to the windshield? I just got my yaris the other day. Please help.
Pretty good information. What year did Mazda take over the Yaris?
This year
I have a 2007 sedan Yaris and I love it so much but I want to buy a 2020 Yaris sedan but idk if it will have the same reliability?
meanwhile in Europe, Toyota actually made their own Yaris instead of a rebadged Mazda while Mazda now supposedly wants a Mazda 2 that in truth is a rebadged Yaris
Is this 1.5 Mazda engine and trans reliable? It’s not toyota and i never dealt with Mazda before 🤔
Thanks for the great review!
Thanks for the review on this -I’ve always had a Toyota or Honda -my wife has the 2019 Honda HRV - please help me out on which one you would go with 2019 Honda Fit or Yaris hatchback 2020? Also do have a review on the Honda Fit (2019) ?
I will try to track down a fit for you!
If you need room get the fit, if you want driving fun get the Yaris. Test drive both see what you like.
There is a difference in handling characteristics between a sedan and a hatchback. Hope you try all your options before you commit to getting one.
Thanks for the review man... the car seems super fine to me but my friend says that the corolla is more comfortable(?) so thats the only drawback to me
