    Interestingly, I owned a 2011 Mazda 2 and we fondly referred to it as “the mighty deuce”. Loved that car, you could redline it in the first three gears and still be at sub illegal speeds! Proves that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

      @ProjectM Great info, wonder if the out the door price (sans shipping) is a bit lower in Puerto Rico for the top trim level Mazda 2? If so it would offset the $800 shipping with the added bonus of the Mazda front end looking much better than the Toyota effort. Only possible issue is the warranty,. Since it's badged a Mazda you wouldn't be able to get warranty work, TSB's, recalls etc taken care of by Toyota dealers...and Mazda dealers could refuse since the 2 technically isn't sold in the U.S. Of course either dealership could easily source parts and do maintenance/repairs, but it may be all out of the owners pocket even if there is some sort of defective part or quality control issue from the factory..

      @@jbm0866 Puerto Rico is a part of the u.s.

    • @jbm0866
      @jbm0866 4 года назад

      @flat That is true, but doesnt mean Toyota dealerships are obligated to honor the warranty on a Mazda badged car, or Mazda dealerships for a car not part of their continental U.S. lineup. Just something to consider and research if anyone wants to try buying a Mazda 2 in Puerto Rico and ship it to the mainland. It would suck to have a brand new car that would have to be shipped to Puerto Rico for warranty work..

    • @matty_o
      @matty_o 4 года назад +4

      jbm0866 the Mazda 2 in Puerto Rico follows federal guidelines for its sale there. So said car imported to the mainland would not remove Mazda’s obligations to perform all warranty work. This wouldn’t be an obligation of Toyota.

    Hi Nathan, These days everyone is talking about the upcoming 268 hp, AWD 6 speed manual Toyota #YarisGR which is serving so successfully as Toyota's new worldwide HALO car. However what is being missed in the debate over whether or not it will reach our continent is the whole new line of genuine Toyota Yaris variants. The TOYOTA Yaris range includes an AWD Hybrid getting around 60 mpg . This Mazda 2 is an older design rendered obsolete by Toyota's own Yaris. In the end we are being shortchanged whether we want the best performance or the best fuel economy.

    I drive one of these. Coming from a Mazda3 was a trip. Everything is exactly the same. Every button is the same, there's even a blank where my old trunk release was. I leave it in "sport" pretty much always, as it de-mushes the throttle. The little sport indicator light is actually my main complaint with the car, as it's the same amber as a check-engine warning light. Electrical tape fixed that right up though. I mostly bought it because it was small cheap and efficient, but not a CVT.

    The only things lacking here are a manual transmission, more (but just a touch more) power and me, because as one of the MANY members of our proud Lardass American community (intentional plumber's crack included) a Hyundai Venue might be a bitter fit; though I'm still thinking the Palisade would be more forgiving to my vast mid-section and b'donk b'donk acreage. I drove a 2017 sedan version for 3 years. Hybrid levels of freeway mileage - 48mpg at 70mph LA to SF.
    I traded it in for a 2020 Kia Rio. Why? MPI instead of GDI in a totally redesigned Gamma 2 1.6L engine (no intake valve deposits worries). CVT (IVT) gives me 3 more MPG and less revving noise. Equal handling, better ride (although the 2020 Yaris Sedan L uses taller tires on the base model).
    Finally, my road service warranty expired in only 2 years on the Yaris (it's 5 years on competitors like the Versa, and on the Rio; even Honda gives a full 3 years IIRC). And, being a Mazda at heart - not an indestructible "French-imported" Yaris with the ancient 4 speed auto - it's not so bullet proof, so I prefer the 5 years 60,000 miles bumper to bumper on the Kia lineup (it's not the 100k powertrain that gets me, it's the extended bumper-to-bumper).

      I was gonna go with the Rio hatch but they didn't have manual version. But the Kia Soul just grew on me big time and the dealer lot had the 2020 Soul with the 6 speed manual, so I went in and signed the papers. First Kia I ever owned and glad. I've taken the Rio with the Gamma 2 MPI roundtrip LA/SF and the mileage is remarkably similar to the Yaris iA. So they are both very frugal; I need to do a few more long distance trips to see how consistent the Rio is. Around town, I seem to be getting a few miles more MPG but nothing startling. What I've gained with the Rio is more usable acceleration - the Yaris iA sounded like an angry vacuum cleaner when the throttle was opened up, the Rio has a more traditional engine sound. More importantly, a "little" extra gas produces the acceleration I want for freeway onramps while the iA required more throttle. I really can't declare a winner - and the Yaris now has a hatch version (which drops the "iA" name since they no longer import the other Yaris version actually made by Toyota) - although my preference is for a clear solution to intake valve deposits and hence I'm leaning to the Rio due to the shift back to MPI vs. the former GDI.

I am wary of the new CVT automatic transmissions for the Corolla, Fit and Forte. Maybe they will hold up when attached to a low powered engine in a light car. Add Mothers VLR spray for the interior every few months (for vinyl, leather and rubber) so the fake leather seats last longer. The Turtle Wax Trim Restorer is good for hard unpainted plastic inside and out.

  • @nlpnt

    I wound up buying a Honda Fit instead, I was willing to compromise and get the Yaris as a sedan to get the manual but couldn't find where the three supposedly in my area were, even though I was willing to travel for the test drive. Toyota's website points you to the nearest dealer rather than showing you which dealer a specific actual car is at.

    If I bought one of these I would swap out the emblems for Mazda emblems. Regardless of how stupid that is, that's what it is. I really hope they add a manual option for the hatches. They have the manual now, but only in the sedan. That makes no sense, as enthusiasts who want a manual would buy the hatch.

    Toyota/Mazda should have the back seats on a rail where you can slide them back of you need to move people but no cargo in the back since the back seats are useless as it sits now unless you're only carrying a baby in a baby seat but not flr adults. Besides that, it's a cool little car.

I'd have one in my garage right now if my wife didn't insist I have an AWD car! Try one of those out if you can. It's the same car with a trunk, a Mazda 2 sedan. You won't regret it. :)
