Performers all the way. Look there's no pyrotechnics there's not a huge screen behind them or drones or auto tune there's just a group of men who got skills!💞💫
You’re right! In those days, this is how entertainers used to be. This type of talent today does NOT exist 2day. The good news is we can go on RUclips, pick the old skool acts we like and just stay in our lanes.
Great funk, great singing, dancing, synching with the music. Those were the days of Funk! 1st met Commodores when they opened for Jackson Five 1st US tour July 1971. Won black radio contest for trip to NYC, front row tickets, hotel, limo, meet everyone. Loved Michael Jackson few years younger than me but Commodores Funk music blew me away. Lionel was 1st man I ever kissed..Followed him ever since to now in 2024❤😅
Costumes, dance moves, vocals, and tight music. This was back when bands had to deliver the entire package. Only the strongest bands, like The Commodores, made it to the top.
53 years ago this month July 1971 1st met Commodores, Lionel Richie backstage as opening act for Jackson Five. Lived meeting them all, talking with Lionel ( was impressive 17 year old fan). Also met Jackson Five and Michael was funny, quirky, fun! Wish I could go full circle, see Lionel backstage 1 more time..
I noticed they sped the song up from the 45. I didn't know lionel could move like that and play the sax. Gotta put some more of this concert appearance. Upload

I agree. They let the music do the talking.

Though they did do pyro back then as did alot of other groups.
Pyrotechnics are frowned upon inside a television studio.
But I agree with the rest of your comment 100%
I'm exhausted just watching this! This is some unreal talent! Lionel!!
Check out Heatwave's live videos from this time frame. Kick-ass stuff and aerobics. ;-)
I loved their first two albums. Funky as hell!
I had all the Commodores albums in high school

Truly amazing, great and talented band. Unlike most entertainers today, they put their heart and soul into their shows.

Damn. Wish they had the horns for the whole song.
Later on they would higher added musicians to back them up . This happened shortly after this episode, I believe.
Is it any wonder The Commodores produced The Temptations album "A Song For You". This sounds like it could easily have fit on that record.
I knew Lionel Richie sang in the Commodores, but I had no idea he played sax too. Awesome!
...back when they were a kick-ass Funk band.
I'm glad to see some funk coing through these videos.
All the way live mofos! Class dismissed

This song was written about famous 70's groupie Sylvia "Slippery" Wenwett.
