Just wow! And Frankie was mostly deaf and had to watch for cues from Lionel. That's why he started singing, "Is the word" at 3:08. And then right before both Lionel and Frankie sang, "Is the word", you can clearly see Lionel giving him his cue and then pointing out in the audience to help Frankie see the teleprompter giving him his cue. Then Lionel left his side and then tapped him on the shoulder and told cued him again. Then at 4:11 you saw Lionel again pointing out to the prompter out there to let Frankie know it was time to sing again. And then once again, Lionel gave Frankie the "1-2-3" cue, and Frankie looked up at him to know they were back into the normal part of the song. I got all of that from my father, who worked on the Midnight Special since day one. But man, what a performance. BOth
Great arrangement. They talked about spending "all day yesterday practicing". That is obvious...they were spot on! Damn that would have been fun to be in attendance on this one!
Wow, I never knew this happened, fantastic. Man oh man, did we take this show (and Don Kirshner's) for granted. All the times I DIDN'T watch it. I wouldn't even have CARED in 1979 if I flipped the TV and saw this!!!!
Just fantastic. Can honestly say I've never seen Frankie sing this live, and I'm 55, which is to say I was 10 when Grease came out in '78. But to do it with the Commodores. And my daughter walked by and said, "Oh cool. Rusty from the Sopranos!" And I thought, "Yup, I raised her right."
Around the same age. Saw FV live in Tel Aviv a few years ago. He was in his early 80’s, and was still pretty damn good! As we were leaving we saw some of the ushers waking out and one girl, couldn’t have been more than 20, was singing “Sheeeeeery Bayayaby” at the top of her lungs. I turned to my wife and “that’s probably the first time she’s ever heard that song - but now it’s going to be stuck in her head for weeks!” 😂
The band sounds absolutely incredible. I was just a kid at this time, and would always hear The Commodores, Kool & the Gang, Earth, Wind, & Fire at the roller rink. I loved them all back then, but in my youth didn't realize I was listening to the Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart of popular music. All three groups - brilliant songwriting and sublime musicianship. Barry Gibb was surely smiling ear-to-ear when he heard this.
Excelent! What a cool collaboration! One of my favorite funk/r&b groups doing Grease with Frankie Valli! I'm so glad they did it live! Memories of a great summer when that movie came out. I've always loved Frankie, too! Thanks so much for this sweet Friday clip!😍💜💜
Appropriate, considering what's become of Frankie nowadays. On one hand, it's good that he's still living and people still come to see him...but it's so sad to watch.
And to think this song was written by Barry Gibb. They look like they are having fun singing it together. It sounds good. But wow do they made Frankie seem short.
Been enjoying being the kid that grew up (1971) in the time when music was so damn good , I hate to feel like the best has been but the majority of the stuff out today can't hardly have any chance to play with the Bad Company, ELO , Fleetwood Mac and Reo ......last sidenote to the story is many years ago I was living with a woman who got us front row seats to see Mr.Valli late 1998 - early 1999 , as well as the invitation to get to meet him and the band backstage. A great time, totally experienced a whole lotta energy from the second we were in their world and the entire time I could see the expression of Mr.Valli looking at my girlfriend because of how much she looked like her father who grew up with Frankie and the coolest part was in the area of New Jersey the other two of the four best friends that are none other than Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci with the 4th being Sal Valano. He was a great guy and just didn't get the Hollywood that his lifelong best friends did but before Mr. Pesci broke through both he and Mr. Valano opened up a salon where they both gave the ladies of NJ the full service which without the backing from a family business that I will leave the name respectfully out of the truth and before My Cousin Vinny , Home Alone and getting a phone call from Marty & Bob with the character of his dream in Goodfellas about the coolest 2nd career and I still have a picture of Joe & Sal styling and smiling back in Jersey 🏌️
When I hear “Grease” I naturally think of John Travolta - I’d rather think about Olivia Newton John (ONJ) if you know what I’m sayin’ - which makes me think of “Saturday Night Fever” (SNF). But Travolta had an amazing run in the 70s if you think about it: “Welcome Back Kotter” (WBK) - I saw Gabe Kaplan do standup live once and he obviously is not the president of the “John Travolta Fan Club” - and then SNF snd then “Grease.” Travolta did “Staying Alive” a bit later which was panned although I think it did good box office receipts perhaps. Anyways Travolta, and Franki Valli, we’re “IT” in the late-70s.
Did not know I needed Frankie Valli and the Commodores until today
it's a jam!
Another jam written by the one & only Sir Barry Gibb!🎶
Frankie probably haven't been this funky since this performance. 😅😂
Love this live version of Grease, so groovy. Lionel and Frankie are amazing and so is the rest of the band. Hats off to the bass player!
Would've loved to see more of the bass fretboard! Man was on fire!
Bass tone is incredible. Looks like acoustic 360.
Honestly I never liked the song “Grease” before, but this changed my mind 😉
This was written by Barry Gibb, who also did all backing vocals with Frankie Valli on original recording.🎶
Ronald Lapread was laying it down!
Just wow!

Frankie Valli and Lionel Richie singing Grease together, come on, how can anyone not help but dance to this? This is some funky stuff here!
😀 For sure!! That was great!
The audience was really into it too; wish I’d been there also!!
How dam great is this!!!!!❤❤
When stars were stars
my god this is an amazing performance. Its a shame it has been locked away for almost 50 years. Thanks so much for this
Great arrangement. They talked about spending "all day yesterday practicing". That is obvious...they were spot on! Damn that would have been fun to be in attendance on this one!
That all day practice session paid off in huge dividends. 😊
Nostalgia just pimp slapped me. 🫨
Hahahaha 😆😆you know it Troy
Lol! 🙌 What memories! 😁
Too true.
I feel the sting too!!
Damn that band is tight
The Commodores were no joke.
Stop it! This actually happened!
Pretty Amazing!
Wow, I never knew this happened, fantastic. Man oh man, did we take this show (and Don Kirshner's) for granted. All the times I DIDN'T watch it. I wouldn't even have CARED in 1979 if I flipped the TV and saw this!!!!
At least you're enjoying it now that's all that really matters
wow, incredible , can't stop watching it. That bass sound........... p bass bark, stunning.😍
So good! glad you enjoy!
More one Barry Gibb's masterpiece. Frankie and Lionel sings so perfect.❤

The commodores were great, Frankie Valli was great and they are great together...
This was amazing to watch! One of the best songs Barry Gibb ever created!☺☺
This is one of my favorite performances of all time on Midnight Special. Easily in my top 5. Such a funky version.
Love this duo ❤❤😅😅
The real Frankie
Frankie was 45 yrs old here. He'll be 90 in May of 2024. Wonder if he thought he'd be performing a lifetime later
Frankie Valli and Lionel Richie singing and Commodores playing Grease written by Bee Gees, incredible!
written by bee gees??? i thought it was a Frankie Valli's song
@@russellkane9439 Sorry, the song was written by Barry Gibb not by all three Bee Gees. Frankie Valli only sings it.
@@Alex-gn9pxAnd Barry Gibb sang backing vocals with Frankie!

Saw this performance as a teen.❤ Epic moment. Thanks 😊❤
I was 6 when this aired. The musicianship is amazing. It sounds like it was produced in a studio, but it passed the snif test. Live on stage.
It’s a fantastic!
Fabulous version. Thanks for posting.
We miss Wolfman Jack & The Midnight Special.
I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that Lionel Richie was really enjoying this collab.

He's a musical genius!🎶
Cool tune, but GREASE was never the word. Don’t believe the hype!
It replaced bird as the word
