I'm so excited and relaxed at the same time. 😁 I'm from the Detroit, Michigan area, and I've been looking for a map to send you. Thank you for the wonderful and relaxing content. 😴
I’m from Michigan so when I saw Great Lakes I was so in!!! We learn them as HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). Thanks for such a tingly video about the beautiful lakes I grew up with 💜💜💜💜💜 Just so you know Mackinac is pronounced “Mackinaw” and is a Canadian French work that is a short version of the Ojibwa word that means “the territory of the Mishinimaki” who were the specific band of Ojibwa that used to live in the area. The other states below Michigan that border the Great Lakes from west to east are Illinois (which has Chicago), Indiana, Ohio, then not connected to Michigan is Pennsylvania which is just below New York. I keep editing this with more things to tell you like that our lakes create rocks only found on their shores like Lake Superior Agate, Yooperlite (which is a UV reactive form of sodalite), and Petoskey Stones. And that Lake Superior is basically Feminine Rage incarnate and I love her for that. And that we have this thing called lake effect snow that you touched on a bit and it is insane it’s super wet and heavy and gross. The lakes essentially create their own precipitation system haha. I just really loved hearing you talk about my home. Gonna go watch this 500 more times.
soooo real about lake superior. i'm from chicago and i've come to call lake michigan mother. always associated michigan with calming, nurturing energy. i love your enthusiasm for the lakes ❤️!
Isn't there a thing about lake superior never giving up her dead? I watch another channel Ask A Mortician and she did a video on how many deaths have been on that lake.
there's nothing like being raised by the great lakes 💞 no matter which one of the lakes or what side of the border, I always feel so connected to other great lake babies when I meet them out n about 🇨🇦💞🇺🇲
I think Mishka surpassed herself in this video. Lovely kitty sounds. I’m impressed that you carry on regardless with your relaxing and soothing talking whilst she squeaks and purrs and climbs all over you 😂
I'm so used to it by now 😅😅 Her favourite place is on my shoulder and sometimes she'll just hang there while I go about doing housework haha. The only part that we have to cut out, I think, is when she wants to come and join me. She's not great at jumping, so she'll just sit next to my chair and yell in a very non-ASMR way 😂
Almost forgot to mention, we're filming the Q&A later this week. So if there's anything you'd like to ask, there's still a little bit of time! Please leave the question as a reply under this comment or on the community tab, it makes it a bit easier for me to organize.

Very excited to see a Great Lakes map video! I grew up in Southern Ontario and have very fond memories. I love road maps as well, so that was another win for this video! Your whispers are very lovely, and the soft crinkles of the road map 💕💕
I was really excited to watch this, being from Wisconsin myself! I learned a lot of interesting information that even I as a local didn’t know before. I have gone on many trips to the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior coasts. Looking out across them feels like you could be looking out across a whole ocean. They are both pretty cold (especially Lake Superior), so not usually ideal for swimming, but there is some amazing hiking along the coast, especially the bluffs of Door County. 🙂
Love love love! I am from Michigan but live in the UK. I miss going to the lake so much, it was such a huge part of of my life swimming in the summer and walking on the frozen waves in winter
The crescent shaped industrial region that you pointed out south of the Great Lakes is referred to as the "rust belt". And the one you see running through the low country of the Southeast is the "cotton belt".
Yay, glad to hear that! And I really liked making this video - obviously I'd heard about the Great Lakes, but there were so many news things I learned while preparing it.
What a heavenly video. The brushing, the tracing, the purring…. It’s all so wonderful. And although I live in the US I’ve never learned much about the Great Lakes, so it was so informative! Thank you for another fabulous video and congrats on 50k. Onward and upward!!

Was excited to watch this! I live just a few miles from the shore of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. We do have many beautiful beaches along the shore here. These Great Lakes have a huge influence on our weather. In the hot summers we say “cooler by the lake.” In winter we get “lake effect snow.”
@@MelangeASMR Yes in the heat of summer the lake keeps the temperature a good 10-15 degrees cooler miles close to the shore. These lakes are really like inland seas .
Yay, I live on Lake Superior in Michigan and I’m so excited to see it mentioned! It’s a truly awe-inspiring body of water - so cold and powerful, basically an inland sea. Growing up on it definitely taught me to respect nature. Thanks for the lovely video!

Hearing you talk about my home (Chicago) and all of the various places I've visited in the Great Lakes region made me feel like I was back in school learning geography. Thank you!
What a nice video! Lake Michigan has been a huge part of my life. I was born and grew up in a town (famous for its sand dunes) along Lake Michigan in Indiana, and moved to Chicago as an adult. I just feel at peace knowing it’s never far away from me❤🌊
This was really interesting, and I learned a little bit of North American geography while getting very relaxed for sleep. Mishka really outdid herself with her purring this week. She clearly likes hearing you talk as much as we do!
I live 45 mins from both Lake Huron and Lake Erie. They are vast bodies of water. Not unlike inland seas, but of course being fresh water. Great video!
I just discovered this channel today and found this video to be quite relaxing and enjoyable. I’m very picky about ASMR videos (it’s mostly about the “Bob Ross” effect of a calming voice for me, not all the other sounds and whispering) and this is the only other channel on RUclips I’ve found that hits that sweet spot (Latte ASMR is the other), so I’m adding this to my subscriptions. Well done! Also, as someone who grew up in Ohio not far from Lake Erie but now lives in the UK, it was especially nice to see this. Keep up the great work!
What a delightful ASMR video this was. I live in Iowa, south of Minnesota, but I spent some childhood years in Michigan. Now, I make annual trips to Michigan, so it was fun to listen and learn. Thank you soooo much!!
As someone who lives within 10 minute bike ride from the Horseshoe Falls it was very interesting to see and hear the perspectives and info about my area and Canadian cultural icons like the Group of Seven from a non-Canadian. Also what a beautiful little cat 😀
The last time I was on the shore of Lake Superior, it felt like an ocean to me. It happened to be a windy day and the waves were high. It was really amazing.
If you go to Niagara Falls, they do have boats that will take you out and you can see everyone on board is wearing a poncho because you can get very wet! Also i expect it will hold up to rewatching as well as your others!

I’m from the metro Detroit area and it was really nice to see some stuff about the region I live in, another amazing video. I’d also like to recommend a video about the Balkans
Thank you, it was a pleasure to learn about the region. Ex-Yugoslavia is on the list, but I'll probably only get around to it by autumn. In the meantime, if you'd like, I've done a video on Bulgaria and one on the old fortified border between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires :)
I liked the part about shipping. Where I live, it is the furthest inland port on Superior (on the Canadian side) and on Friday we had our first "salty" arrive of the year! It arrived from the Marshall Islands. There are also "Lakers" as well.
27:30 is one of my favorite pictures of Michigan - and yes those are clouds! Snow has become rarer in MIchigan due to Climate Change although we continue to receive it! When I was a child we would receive several feet of snow during the course of the Winter and the rivers would freeze almost entirely ‼
I live in the Great Lakes region and I never realized really that there are indeed several other 'great' lakes along a NorthWestern line traversing Canada also ‼I never thought about how the Canadian Shield mountains are related geographically to those lakes ❣
I’ve been to Vienna twice and loved every minute. It would be wonderful if you could share the pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben with everyone in your wonderful style
For a land size comparison, the Great Lakes alone are about 2.6x the size of Austria! Or about half an Austria per lake. As an American, I have a hard time wrapping my head around European countries being so small!
What an awesome ASMR video plus highky interesting topic as well. By the way, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio are the 3 additional States that boarder the Great lakes to the South. They were cut off on your map.
I live in Portage, IN, which is right on the shore of Lake Michigan and is home to Indiana Dunes National Park. I couldn't click this link fast enough 😊
The straight between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and the island are all pronounced the same way as the city, 'Mack-i-naw'. The Straight and the Island are spelled as Mackinac and the city is Mackinaw, but all are pronounced as Mackinaw. The name is a shortening of the Native American name Michilimackinac. The British changed the spelling of the city to match the accepted pronunciation, but the island and straight names stuck and never changed. -A Michigander
Oh now that you mention it, I think I actually took note of the spelling/pronunciation for a video we made ages ago 😅 Oh well... Thank you for bringing it up!

@@MelangeASMR they are pretty impressive lakes haha. You did a commendable job just going with the unplanned cameo 😂 I was also surprised she stuck around, but she added to the cozy, calm ambiance. And I saw when she jumped on your shoulder like you said she usually does ☺️
fyi Mackinac is pronounced [MACK-i-naw]; it rhymes with 'law'. great video! also Niagara is pronounced [nigh-AG-ruh]; 'nigh' rhymes with 'bye', the 'AG' rhymes with 'bag', 'ruh' rhymes with 'the'
@@MelangeASMR I teach English to Germans every day, so I've got an ear for the most common slip-ups. But placename pronunciation is especially problematic. Sometimes two native speakers of American English don't even pronounce placenames the same way.
Hallo Melange! Love your videos, but I must correct you on something. The Gulf Coast (Texas to Florida) is considered the “Third Coast” of the US, not the Great Lakes.
Adorable! I've lived along the Niagara Peninsula for all 40+ of my years, so the little divot between Lakes Erie and Ontario feels incredibly tiny and quaint to me. I suppose the Great Lakes system is rather huge, though, although it's quite impossible for me to think of it as such.

For a land size comparison, the Great Lakes alone are about 2.6x the size of Austria! Or about half an Austria per lake. As an American, I have a hard time wrapping my head around European countries being so small!
Your cat loves a good geography-history lesson
Congrats on 50k
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank you!!
I live less than ten miles from Lake Erie, the most shallow of the Great Lakes (average depth of sixty feet and a couple hundred feet deep maximum).
Haha oh my goodness, I'm having some minor health issues and for a second I thought that the breathing at 28:13 was ME and panicked about my lungs. It was the kitty :)
👌👌👌
Very close, but Mackinac (sometimes spelled mackinaw) is pronounced without the second C - like mackinaw. I live there :)
Aah thanks, missed that.
yay :) x
Mishka wanted to be the star!
She did - normally she's off to sleep on her hammock after a bit but apparently she likes the lakes haha
@@MelangeASMR they are pretty impressive lakes haha. You did a commendable job just going with the unplanned cameo 😂 I was also surprised she stuck around, but she added to the cozy, calm ambiance. And I saw when she jumped on your shoulder like you said she usually does ☺️
fyi Mackinac is pronounced [MACK-i-naw]; it rhymes with 'law'. great video!
also Niagara is pronounced [nigh-AG-ruh]; 'nigh' rhymes with 'bye', the 'AG' rhymes with 'bag', 'ruh' rhymes with 'the'
Thank you! Sometimes a German pronunciation just sneaks in 😅
@@MelangeASMR I teach English to Germans every day, so I've got an ear for the most common slip-ups. But placename pronunciation is especially problematic. Sometimes two native speakers of American English don't even pronounce placenames the same way.
Hello my fellow Michiganders!!!!
Hallo Melange! Love your videos, but I must correct you on something. The Gulf Coast (Texas to Florida) is considered the “Third Coast” of the US, not the Great Lakes.
Ah, that would make more sense. I think I only saw the third coast part on the German wikipedia page and not the English one, now that you mention it.
🙏
Thank you for your comments every week!!
@@MelangeASMR You are most welcome. 🙏💛
glad to see so many michiganders in the comments 😂

My pleasure!
But where's the fish? 😸
Wtf Mishka 😂❤
She's very invested in the Great Lakes lol
Кот это победа!
Adorable! I've lived along the Niagara Peninsula for all 40+ of my years, so the little divot between Lakes Erie and Ontario feels incredibly tiny and quaint to me. I suppose the Great Lakes system is rather huge, though, although it's quite impossible for me to think of it as such.
It's impossible for me as well 😅 It's just the sheer scale that I don't even have a concept of.
