Some SEC Coaches Being Selective in NIL Spending, More Transfer Portal Moves, Toughest SOS in SEC

  • On today's show, we discuss Hugh Freeze saying he "couldn't bring himself" to spend $1 million on a Transfer Portal QB, but is that the right approach? Are they better off spending on big time wide receivers to surround Payton Thorne, or should they have targeted a Cam Ward-type QB? We also tie this in LSU Coach Brian Kelly's comments earlier this week on "buying players", as well as Josh Heupel's comments on "bringing the right people inside the building." It's clear SEC coaches are being more selective when it comes to how much they're willing to spend on transfer portal players in this NIL-era.
Also, we go Around The Conference as Texas adds a d-lineman in former Louisville DL Jermayne Lole, beating out Oklahoma for his services. Alabama adds Wake Forest DB DaShawn Jones to the mix in their secondary, along with their other transfers like Keon Sabb, Kam Howard and Domani Jackson. And Hugh Freeze says he is a big "believer" still in QB Payton Thorne.
And who has the toughest Strength of Schedules in the SEC? Also, a few SEC hoops nuggets.

You ask which would I rather have Payton or Ward? Well if I get the same players out the portal that they got in the winter and spring, yes of course! I don't think you get all the pieces that they acquired if you go break the bank on Ward. I'm happy!

I actually agree with Freeze's decision to focus on developing what we have. Where I disagree with him is on Thorne being the guy. We should focus on developing Holden, Brown or White. If a 5th-year guy needs developing then we are in trouble. We should have had an "open" QB competition but nope, we didn't.

Everybody thinks that Ole Miss spends money willy nilly. But they actually do this same. They have a valuation structure, and if the player doesn't meet their evaluation, buy-in, and the money they think he's worth, they pass. Kelly's only error is how he says it? Something that's easily clipped for click bait without full context during the time of year in which sportswriters have nothing to talk about.

As a bama fan I love Payton Thorne for auburn because he’s a 6th round draft pick at best. Lol RTR

I'm an Auburn and I dont think Thorne is even drafted at all. He may get a free-agent contract for a practice squad at best.

Try telling 18-22 years olds they can make more money on the back end.. lol kids care about getting the money now.

Cam Ward would’ve been a major upgrade over Thorne. We’d be playoff contenders with Ward. Instead, us Auburn fans are wondering if Thorne can win 8 games. 😑

But what if it was Ward WITHOUT Robert Lewis, Keandre Lambert-Smith & Cam Coleman? Point being that money was spent on WRs to surround around Payton Thorne

@@LockedOnSECmight not have gotten the transfers, but Cam Coleman was already signed. I watched Cam Newton win the natty with a bunch of offensive players that never played in the NFL. Give me the game changer QB over game changers all around them. That’s like put $100k into a car but still having a mediocre driver behind the wheel.

And cam ward has jacolby george, Sam brown and restrepo around him with a top 10 offensive line and a top 5 running back

not every player in the portal is equal; players who have limited potential to play in the NFL regardless of whether they get playing time or not should be expected to prioritize maximizing their earning potential while still in college. it's the almost-but-not-quite-good-enough players who should be drawing the most lucrative offers from programs that have championship aspirations who are addressing a glaring need on their rosters. i'd worry about someone already projected to be a day two pick at the very worst focusing on money. they're not going to play hurt nor would i expect them to contribute positively in terms of morale/leadership.

Can we be honest the nil is not make or break it in the collegiate process but definitely a factor lets all quit acting like when we dont get are choices that its solely because of money thats a brain dead thought process

This is dumb. Coaches cant "spend" NIL money. I know they are cheating, but how are they openly admitting to it and not getting in trouble.
