F-Zero still strikes amongst the most perfect balance of control, speed, track selection, music and challenge I can think of any racing game I've ever played.
F-Zero sure does still hold up well today. I was just playing it a few days ago, trying to set new lap records. It really does feel like an arcade racer for home consoles, and perhaps that's why I enjoy it so much. I'm an arcade rat, after all. The game's difficulty is notable, too. Without track memorization (and the L/R triggers for tight turns), later stages will chew you up and spit you out. Great review! I need to leave my own on the site soon.
A good tip for turning in F-ZERO is when you get to a hard corner, rapidly tap the accelerate and turn, if that's not enough do the same but use the L/R buttons for tighter turns.
Your brain runs on lack of knowledge :p SNES has blast processing? LOL, that's may explain why SNES's Final Fight = no 2 players mode; only a few enemies on screen; lower vertical resolution & even with all these restrictions the game still have slowdowns... Now that's impressive! xD Mega Drive = Blast Processing, the real one, with tons of sprites on-screen; faster games; higher-resolution; smoother scrollings; etc... Just go compare Thunder Spirits on SNES with Thunder Force III on Mega Drive or Final Fight on SNES with Final Fight on Mega-CD, among many others examples ;) Then, SNES has Mode 7, it's another thing & since the Mega Drive doesn't have this feature, for kind of games which have gameplay based on Mode 7 like racing games, you can't have equivalent on it. But Mode 7 is very limited, just look at SNES's Mode 7 racers : they are mostly flat pixelated games with only a few tiny sprites around which don't even scale in real zoom but mostly in a few-frames-based pre-rendered zoom. That's why most SNES's Mode7 racers look like crap. & in fact among the what, 15, 20 maybe more existing SNES's Mode 7 racers, only F-Zero & Super Mario Kart are really good & have aged kinda well. But still, as well as the others SNES's Mode 7 racers, they are also affected by these limitations = flat games with only a few tiny sprites which scale in a poor way (Not because it's in pre-rendered, pre-rendered scaling can be good-looking when well made except it's not the case here in order to save on processing (... Since the SNES runs on Low Processing)) & finally the Mega-CD added scaling & rotation capabilities to the Mega Drive & therefore here you can compare with SNES's Mode 7 based games. & in short : Mega-CD games like AH-3 Thunderstrike or SoulStar put to shame every kind of SNES's Mode 7 based games. I'm not saying the SNES is rubbish, it has some great games & F-Zero is one of them IMO. But for a 1990 system it's limited in a lot of ways & even its own way to evolve, = chip-based cartridges, fail to impress (Stunt Race FX anyone? Among others examples...).
Ah nostalgia! My older brother had a Super Famicom back in the early 90s (when I was around 8 or 9 years old ) and I used to play this and Super Mario Kart all the time. Those were great memorable times.
Yes this game is hard, but no where near as insanely hard as F-Zero GX on the GameCube is, as you need near split perfect reflexes too get far in that game without cheating(at least I do). The only really approachable F-Zero game for casual racing fans there is, at least in my book, is F-Zero X on the N64, which runs really well on the N64 at 60fps, and makes for some awesome 4 screen local multiplayer matches with your buddies on a gaming night, while drinking some brews.
Mark, you read my mind, i just played fzero yester day evening right before you published that video (gmt+1 ^^), i had tears of happy memories from a simpler time... also i realized how much i suck at super mario land :D
Awwww, you didn't show off the cheaty shortcut in Port Town. Theres a ramp behind a repair strip that will cut half the lap off for you but you have to know EXACTLY the right angle or you go boom.
Well, since this is probably the only place I'll ever find you on this massive website, I have only one thing to ask you... Are you in anyway related to Lil Beeper?
I had F-Zero Maximum Velocity on the gameboy advance. He's not lying about the race tracks. You practically have to know every turn and bump to win because once you lose 1st place that's it. I eventually unlocked all the racers and stages, the music on that game was smooth too.
This is one Snes title that still holds up well today, love the sound track to it as well; Wipeout had better graphics + weapons, but if u hit a wall, it was almost impossible to get a place...classic game this.
Why the FUCK doesn't Mark have more subscribers? I just don't get it. 1 of the best gaming channels on youtube, far better than a lot of channels with far more subscribers.
I think it's because people don't like opinions(especially when they differ), character and flamethrowers any more.. ;) Still my favourite CGR Review: ruclips.net/video/B_ezJAWnKpg/видео.html [XG Blast!] Can't watch it without laughing out loud! :D Thanks Mark! EDF! EDF!
Burned Frozen Nah, he never had a lot of subs... I think that is cause he is not a CoD fan reviewer wich all the kids wanna hear nowadays. Quality over quantity =)
Burned Frozen I know that after following him for several years he has lost some views on his videos. The newer releases tend to get more attention than the older ones, but even with the latter there seemed to be more hits per video. I don't know if he did something to cause a drop in his viewer base or what. I know when Mark was doing the stuff with TJ (that reminded me of The Game Room with Dave) back in early 2012 that hadn't got a lot of attention. Nevertheless, his subs seem to be growing and I really can't stop watching this guy. Probably my all time favorite RUclips channel.
Because he doesn't litter his channel with clickbait with inflammatory titles, opinions of relevant controversy or meaningless top 10 charts. He doesn't really market outside his website or channel either. The main reason however is that he reviews 90% old things and 10% new things. New things give people greater incentive to watch.
Oh man, I loved this game. My favorite planet was Big Blue (if I recall the name correctly). So lovely. Wasn't there a secret league or difficulty level that you had to master the others to unlock?
I remember buying this game when I was like 7 years old for 120 Deutsche Mark, this game was fucking hard for a 7 year old but I loved the shit out of it
Four difficulties. F-Zero has four difficulties. There's Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. After completing Knight, Queen, and King on Expert, the Master difficulty is unlocked, which is absolutely brutal.
what game is running a longevity of livestreaming processing well the intergalactic hub of cgr is your subscribing recent data updated still saying you're streaming
F-Zero is still a really great game that I play fairly often. The music is awesome. It is a big shame that GX didn't sell well enough to be seen as a hit, as that ended the series. I will continue to hope and pray that Nintendo bring it back. F-Zero Wii U, please!
I loved the crap out of this when I was a kid! One of the few games that actually made me pay attention to how I was doing and try to beat my personal bests. Nintendo need to slap this into a plug-n-play style TV console sometime. I'd buy at least one of those. ;)
This one stinks nostalgia for me. Awesome. If you thought it was tough for you in the US, err I mean intergalactic space station, you wanted to try it on PAL 50hz and then jump to 60-NTSC! It's like learning to drive twice! :)
We need a new F-Zero for Wii U and/or 3DS, it's been way too long. Sure GX was so amazing and filled to the brim with content that it would be almost impossible to surpas but I still want more, I'd even take a HD remake at this point.
- When GX came along... was a pleasant surprise to see SEGA plastered on it... Nintendo's former rival taking this awesome series into something complete and just fantastic... Would love a HD update of GX for the wii U.
this game has challanging tracks being very colorfull with sprite scaling???? It also has nice music tracks, yes it's hard to imagine that this game was sooo hot 25 years ago with it's mode 7 but it was everything you could,ve ask for, am mean you had just 2 choices, blast proccesing or mode7,many gamers switched from side or just prefered that simple mode7 feature of the snes.
Designandrew iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/mariokart/0/0 "Originally, the development of Super Mario Kart began with the idea of creating a two-player racing game in contrast to the single-person gameplay of F-Zero." Mario Kart was inspired by F-Zero, stop making stuff up.
Although it may have influenced games like Wipeout, F-Zero never really caused the same impact on me like Wipeout did, even if the formula is basically the same: anti-gravity racing. In fact, despite having played it, I never really owned it (I think I chose to buy Pilotwings instead back then), and I actually never felt the curiosity to play any subsequent F-Zero game even though I'm a fan of the anti-gravity racing genre!
I can think of cartridge soundtracks that MAY be as good as this one, but I can't think of a single cartridge-era soundtrack that is better than F-Zero's. Sonic 2 vs. F-Zero may be the ultimate soundtrack showdown.
I bought the SNES Mini for all the other classics and I've spent easily 100+ hours playing them all. But F-Zero is the one game I keep coming back for. It still plays beautifully. The sense of speed combined with the soundtrack and the tight controls still make it a lot of fun today.

nintendo needs to make a new installment for this series. it's been dead for so long.
F-Zero sure does still hold up well today. I was just playing it a few days ago, trying to set new lap records.

I NEVER made the jump at 0:47. I tried holding up, down, screaming, throwing the controller... all didnt work
This game runs on blast processing. Nintendo is what Genesisn't
come on its not like the genesis couldnt run this.
*****
It couldn't as it lacked mode 7. Look at 'street racer' for a prime example of how 'bad' it runs on the genesis compared to the SNES.
venger the genesis couldnt even play the music this game has listen to that snes purr
Vulgora the f zero music pretty much screams "i want to be on the genesis" :P
Your brain runs on lack of knowledge :p

Still have this. god i miss the old days. thanks for the review 10/10
There are 4 difficulties. You have to beat a league on expert to unlock Master

Agreed man
F-Zero GP Legend is also pretty approachable.
Mark, you read my mind, i just played fzero yester day evening right before you published that video (gmt+1 ^^), i had tears of happy memories from a simpler time... also i realized how much i suck at super mario land :D
F-Zero is one of my favorite Nintendo IP's. I'd absolutely love to see a new F-Zero on the Wii U, I'd buy that day one for sure.
This game is one of the reasons why I had a SNES. I have my old track times somehow still saved on the cart over 20 years later.
One of the best racers from that era, spent hours playing this
Awwww, you didn't show off the cheaty shortcut in Port Town. Theres a ramp behind a repair strip that will cut half the lap off for you but you have to know EXACTLY the right angle or you go boom.
Good memories! Amazing how it's all coming back while watching this after so manu years! Nice review.

Omg this has to be an epic review. This was one of my favorite games as a kid.

Yes

Mark you should really invest in a decent capture device or upscaler for your retro stuff
I still play F-Zero to this day it is awesome!
This is one Snes title that still holds up well today, love the sound track to it as well; Wipeout had better graphics + weapons, but if u hit a wall, it was almost impossible to get a place...classic game this.
This really brings me back. I loved this game, and the soundtrack. It was pretty though!
One of my favorite SNES games. Lots of replay value and a great challenge to win everthing. A great soundtrack as well.
As a huge SEGA fan, this game really got my attention and respect when it comes to Nintendo. Played it for the first time back in 92.
One of my favorite games of all time. I don't know how many hours I've spent playing this.
I wonder if they'll ever release a new F Zero? This, X, and GX were awesome. Online would probably get pretty intense.
Why the FUCK doesn't Mark have more subscribers? I just don't get it. 1 of the best gaming channels on youtube, far better than a lot of channels with far more subscribers.

I'm glad he isn't.
When a channel goes super popular, it gets ruined. Trust me, I have plenty examples of that.

Happy New Classic Year!
Oh man, I loved this game. My favorite planet was Big Blue (if I recall the name correctly). So lovely. Wasn't there a secret league or difficulty level that you had to master the others to unlock?
You should do more live streams, the last one went well
Great music and sense of speed in this game.
Classic game loved it since i was five and still play it on my wiiu today
I remember buying this game when I was like 7 years old for 120 Deutsche Mark, this game was fucking hard for a 7 year old but I loved the shit out of it
This is such an awesome game. It's definitely one of my favorite racing games.
I remember when this came out. Absolutely blew my mind! I was playing it last week and man it's one tough game! Great though!
I'd love to seem do a review of GX. "Balls to the wall" wouldn't be enough to describe that game
I never got into it much but that is a really classic racing game.
awesome game, awesome review, awesome channel! You rock man!
NEW F-ZERO for Wii U. DO IT NINTENDO
Four difficulties. F-Zero has four difficulties. There's Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. After completing Knight, Queen, and King on Expert, the Master difficulty is unlocked, which is absolutely brutal.
+Jonathan Domenech master difficulty? no thanks, standard difficulty is enough
FINALLY. Holy shit, you better be reviewing X and GX soon, too.
My second favorite game franchise. I was unbeatable back in the day.
great work mark
Mark should live stream this game. It would be awesome and rage inducing lol.
That last death in the video lmao
Oh, man... Me and a few friends used to play this game all the time. Loser had to eat a piece of garlic.
It was so great ! XD
Good times... :)
I just wish that they'd make a new f-Zero game along the line.
what game is running a longevity of livestreaming processing well the intergalactic hub of cgr is your subscribing recent data updated still saying you're streaming
Hard as nails and blisteringly fast for the time. The WiiU could do with an update on this title. The whole series are rock hard.
Awesome review, but how come the framerate looks so choppy? Even on an emulator it's smoother than this.
Thank you Lord Karnage. Your videos are sent from heaven to save us from Alex Jones! Lol.
Where's the best of 2014 video, Mark? I've been waiting for it to pop up in my subscription feed.
Man, I wish they would make another F-Zero game...
One of my favorite Snes games.
And the music! I actually have the soundtrack in my car!
Awesome game.
Great review man! But... you gotta press down right before landing a jump. Keeps you from losing that momentum you worked so hard to build up.
F-Zero is still a really great game that I play fairly often. The music is awesome. It is a big shame that GX didn't sell well enough to be seen as a hit, as that ended the series. I will continue to hope and pray that Nintendo bring it back. F-Zero Wii U, please!

Where's Grandia? :(
My mom just got me this game for Christmas. She's the best!
Brace yourself, The Classic Game Room, Game Of The Year Award Show is coming
The only gaming award show that matters

My racing game of choice from the ages of 5-9
Great review of a great, great game !
I love the F-ZERO series.
A game so good Sega made a sequel. This and maybe Castlevania 4 are my favourite SNES games. Incredible atmosphere, sound effects and music.
F-Zero or Outrun?
- When GX came along... was a pleasant surprise to see SEGA plastered on it... Nintendo's former rival taking this awesome series into something complete and just fantastic... Would love a HD update of GX for the wii U.

I love F-Zero.
The only flaw with this classic SNES gem imo is no 2-player mode :/
I love this game!
Fzero on snes just looks like a slightly modified version of the same engine they used for SNES Mario Kart.
***** They were working on MK long before Fzero. Mario Kart was a longer development. OWNED.
Designandrew In 1990 F-ZERO was ready (not published), Mario Kart wasn't. OWNED.

_ahem_
*TAKE THAT!*
I want a new Zero for the Wii u this will be fantastic.
best best best best utube intro ever !!

Hold down when making those Jumps!! All the way until you land dont lose any of that speed!!
If only Sega CD has a F-Zero competitor. I know Sega CD could pull something like this off.
I LOVE THAT GAME I USED TO PLAY IT
This game looks very good for 1991!
Dude. Hold down on the d pad when landing. Come on man lol
i got the mode 7 sickness from watching this review. haha!
Fun Fact: Did you ever wonder why it's call F-Zero? Because it is next generation of Formula One Racing!
F-1 Racing
F-0 RACING!
I've always found the original F-Zero quite easy actually (granted I played it after GX, with finishing half way it hardest difficulty)
Wanna Master the game? Good luck! It is INSANELY HARD when all the Gold Pilots are like NOPE!
Awesome
Oh how I'd wish Nintendo would make a F-Zero Wii U/3DS
i´m really not a fan of zelda, mario and other nintendo franchises except for f-zero, that game is still awesome =)
mark do sonic boom please
ONLY GUILE CAN GOD DAMMIT HA J/K
Also who does the youtube comments?

Nice
So good!! Of course yall already knew that.
I hate and love this game at the same time. It sucks and it's absolutely awesome! I can't get enough of it. Every time I play I feel like my head wants to explode and when I win I feel so much relieve and satisfaction. But I can't win the third cup even on beginner's difficulty. I'll always love and hate this freakin' game!
When I played this game when it had first came out I was amazed with how great of a racing game it really was. Until that point, most all racing games was "Meh"
Classic game, love it, GOOD OL SNES Days
