Magnus Carlsen defeats Hans Niemann's Italian Game

- Featured is a sharp blitz chess game between Hans Niemann and Magnus Carlsen from the Early Titled Tuesday held on July 9th 2024. Out of an Italian Game, Carlsen allows Niemann to establish his pawn on a6. This pawn becomes a focal point in the early middlegame where Carlsen maneuvers to capture it. A critical moment would be after Carlsen plays 18...Ndb8. Niemann misses a golden opportunity to seize a decisive initiative in the center while Carlsen was preoccupied with tracking the a6-pawn. Once Carlsen established a strong 5th rank pawn duo, it would not take long for Niemann's position to completely collapse. This game acts as their most recent encounter, and they likely will not meet again until September 6th in the Semi-finals of the 2024 Speed Chess Championship held in Paris.

I think it is worth noting that this game was played after carlsen had withdrawn from a tournament. His mother died on the Monday and he played this on the tuesday, I felt like there was some real steely determination from Magnus here. Thanks Jerry.
Sad to hear about his mother :(, still being to play phenomenal game in spite of that is incredible
Hans Niemann didn't just resign.
I wonder if he knew about the death of Carlson's mom and, when losing,
allowed it to play out - as a respectful humble gesture.
(Could be seen as a white flag regarding their conflicts)
What do you think, Jerry?
@@michaelinminn Respectful and humble Niemann? You are kidding right?
I'm always baffled by how it's respectful to resign in one instance, but completely disrespectful NOT to resign in another. People just can't get it straight.
@@michaelinminnI want a little of what you’re smoking
that's one of very very very few channels i still watch on youtube. I know the quality is always perfect.
Hi what other channels you watch for chess particularly for learning
@@muhammadarshadmalik3666 I have a few suggestions for your consideration:
1. Agadmator chess channel
2. Remote Chess Academy
3. Historical Chess Videos
4. Chess Dawg
I have found these, all free use, to be very educational and helpful. No disrespect to other chess channels, intended. These are my Top 5 (includes this channel, too). Best Wishes!
the speed chess semi finals is gonna be huge. many eyes on that game.
A brutal crush… BUT key takeaways are 1) Magnus’ unusual opening play was NOT flawless; 2) Nonetheless the window of opportunity to take advantage of the suboptimal play was very brief… a move or two at most. Another example of why Magnus is so successful and so darn hard to beat.
It seems that Magnus is playing poker with his opponents. He inserts bluffs and traps that are of little consequence without engine level precision from the opponent. The little inaccuracies also serve the purpose of passing the move back to the opponent so Magnus can get clarity in the position before committing to any concrete plans. The opponent either falls for the traps or Magnus grinds him down in the endgame.
It's Blitz, go have fun.
I don't want anyone to beat Hans
ChessNetwork, Keep making videos!
I know it's often considered disrespectful, but I always like when games go to checkmate. It's pleasing to see the finality of the position.
Is it actually considered disrespectful?
@@ppackers0430yes for gm level
Particularly when it's more than just a "plus 1 pawn" end game grind.
This was an inevitable checkmate, swift and brutal. I respect that HN allowed MC to see it through.
Good vibes :p
@@allancouceiro9255 it is the opposite of respect from HN. This is HN showing that he does not have any respect for MC. However, atleast we got to see the game to the end :)
@@axel_r_ I always thinks its disrespectful of an apponent to quit without allowing you to finish your artwork.
Appreciate your commentary of this game and am looking forward to seeing them play each other again. (Healthy tension😅)
Hi Jerry! First like! Never been the first like to any of your videos over the years. lol . Thanks for the game!
Congrats Supernova 🥇😎
7:04 I thought for some reason I'd accidentally sped up the video. Not used to hearing ChessNetwork speak that fast 🤣
I don't have anything smart of funny to say so I am writing this in order to feed the algorithm.
Happy chess everyone.
lol'd
I'm answering here, to say everyone should watch this video (do you hear algoritm?) 😅
Well played my friend. Very, very well played indeed.
You get my vote for your Gold Medal suggestion and actions!
my favorite chess channel! ty jerry for the uploads!
Always been a pretty solid standard game player but a sucky blitz player. I know I wouldn't have seen all the moves during a blitz game, but I am glad to say I got both of Jerry's pop quizzes correct this game, excluding 23. Ra4 which I pretty much doubt anyone would've seen, much less try playing themselves.
15. Nh7
19. d5
I'm only a USCF class A rated player, so I was very happy to find the exchange sac on f3 plan for black, starting with ...Nh7.
Nice 👍
Jerry, another great analysis. Thanks.
always a great upload. thanks jerry, i played hans once in his twitch stream. he came right at me. i would expect that for the tourney. = ).
It is a nice change to see Niemann playing without doing computer moves but playing like a human vs another human.
I hope Niemann now continues to grow as a human player and never cheats again.
Niemann will never be a legendary player like Carlsen, Fischer, Kasparov, etc, but he will be a good top-10 contender.
When you said were would you continue from here I said Nh7 and stockfish said it was the best so Im happy my idea wasn't dumb.
The nuances and tactics in this game are constant.
To see them all and exploit them in a 3 + 1 is insane.
I think that if Hans beats Magnus, that is the final as far as he cares.Given his intemperate recent interview, he may be preparing hard for this speed match.I think Magnus will treat it as just another game, and go on to win.
That would be extremely foolish and lazy. Carlsen does want to beat him because of the anticipation and all the eyes that would be on that match. And this is going to be in history. You have to answer the call just like any two rivals in any other sport.
@@edwincollins5847 i am not saying he won't prepare for his opponent , but i daresay his advisors and seconds will
I thought Carlsen's Knight to a5 would have been more advantageous.
I actually found the engine move each time but only had a feeling this would be the best no idea about the continuation 😂
These videos r great
Thank you
Niemann is the underdog but he is very capable of finding some weird-looking brilliances. I still don't get it. Why are "the chess gods" treating him like he snuck in and he doesn't belong there?
It's how cheating works... the mindset is "once a cheater, always a cheater" (even if you already paid for your mistakes).
Think about it: imagine a top sports player being disqualified for doping, then coming back and winning again... as a rival, how could you not at least suspect that he's still playing dirty? It's a normal reaction, although it sucks if you really came out clean after the deserved punishment.
A dominating performance from Carlsen.
SUB+! Nice explanation. THX!
Thank you 👍
Dizzying to think that this was played blitz, unlike our leisurely analyses after the fact!
I did get, at the first pop quiz, the computer’s 14…NR2(!), over Niemann’s text move. I did NOT get either his or the computer’s suggestion at the… top of move 18, I think it was: My guess was 18 QN3, or else 18 QR4, preventing or discouraging the Knight from getting to square b4 - which he eventually does in the Game, assisting the win. Likewise, White in the text does play a QN3, but a move or two after my suggested moment.
Needless to say, I missed the computer’s RR4 by a country mile!
Thanks Jerry
So clearly Jerry felt it was important to prove that Hans was not using an engine
Thing is most cheaters will deliberately sabotage their accuracy a bit
@@UltimateEnd0 I find it unlikely that anyone would do this playing against magnus... and get crushed immediately.
Nieman lost the game by not playing the Pawn to d5.
I'd like Hans to have a good showing in the upcoming match, but I think Magnus will bury him.
I saw ra4 as a candidate move but didn’t see why it would be useful
When was it played ?
Chess speaks for itself
Jerry has my vote for the highest quality youtube channel - not just out of the chess channels, but out of all channels.
Carlsen is playing nothing by accident, so his double rook move Ra8-d8-f8 was certainly to lose a tempo and to trigger his opponent going in a certain direction
I saw knight h7, cool
How can a grandmaster (Niemann) miss such a positional move like d5 as you analyzed. 😮
The chess speaks for itself.
I found the moves, it’s losing before I get a chance at a win that’s my problem 😂
Hey Jerry, go browns.
Yay! I found Nh7!
Jerry, I'm begging you. Record some chess960 please.

Hey Jerry, love most of your videos. Not so much These faster time controls with some poor moves...Don't teach me anything. A lot of people might enjoy them. I'm just one person, but I prefer you showing us higher level play aka longer time controls. Still a big fan, thanks.
Ill never get a like from Jerry. I play chess but now I play regularly. Maybe I'm just getting old. 2010
Straight to checkmate... This guy's a complete clown
Hans right??
seeing that humans can't play chess just as well as computers is a testament to the fact that humans can't really play chess well... and gloating about the 'goats' is so misguided... and to keep it 100%, @9:25 I knew that there was no direct threat so it must have been some 'positional' move in prep for an attack, and altho' i spotted A4 i didn't really fully understand/calculate why it was a good move, but anyways \o/

Always nice to see cheaters getting abolished
:)
Regarding the Speed Chess match . . . I predict Hans DESTROYS Magnus and Magnus cries and accuses Hans of cheating.
I bet on magnus
Hans is a certified cheater though, but he will still loose:)
First 🎉
magnus destroyed the cheater 😂😂
cheater nieman what a waste iof time
Desperate measure to dump JD Vance in favour of RFK Jnr. Better for Trump to stand aside (like Joe Biden did). JD becomes nominee and he can appoint Nikki Haley as VP. THEN, JD stands aside and Nikki Haley becomes nominee. MTG, becomes new VP. Dump Trump, JD Vance and RFK out of contention, with two women on the MAGAR ticket. That should help MAGAR appeal to women voters again! Sorted! Mike-drop
