To be honest, main subject of upgrading the previous series to a new one isn't the right comparison. I don't know a single person in the world, that isn't the biggest PC enthusiast, but just a regular gamer, who actually buys new GPU every generation. Let's say you bought 3060 Ti back in the days and you see that new 400$ GPU is just few percent faster. Are you down because of that? Quite the opposite. I means you'll get by another 2years with your purchase, because the games themselves won't be able to push hardware limits again, since most people are sitting on entry-mainstream-mid GPU's.
But that falls quicly when you realize that you had this, almost exact same path, just 2 years ago. Minus the DLSS 3, AV1 and better power efficiency when it comes to NV cards. I myself was in the GTX 1660 Super category, was waiting for the good 200$ GPU upgrade for years and I finally caved, bought 4070 and that was that. If I weren't this succesful over these years when it comes to salary, I'd probably still look for 200-ish dollars cards and there... is none good option, aside from 2y old RX 6600. Which shows how terrible GPU market has become because of the second crypto boom and NV/AMD pure greed. Sad times, especially for budget gamers, and I'd probably quit gaming alltogether if I was in the 200$ gpu market still. That, or I'd just buy a console.

You don't mention that if people are upgrading their systems, it may be that they have only PCIE 3.0 and with only 8 lines Rtx 4060ti will perform exactly as Rtx 3060ti (or even worse in heavy Vram usage games like The Last of us).
      PS : please test rtx 4060ti and 4060 on PCIe 3.0 )

They want to get rid of Navi 21 stock first. And they're incrementally lowering prices until that happens. Everyone has a threshold and they know it. That being said, the 6950XT is not universally in stock any more, so we are getting closer. In fact there are only two 6950XTs on newegg right now that aren't from third party sellers, and both are undesirable options.

      Who cares?
They have product that name is 7900XT and they have product that name is 7800XT. It does not matter what you think the names should be that is irrelevant!
If Sony would release a GPU that has name Fast, and another GPU that name is not so fast and third that is named "Even slower"... what does that mean? Nothing! All that matter is how much speed you get for the money you spend! The name is irrelevant!
if 5060 will cost $2000, do you care... if it is double the speed of 4090ti. If 5090ti cost $300, do you care... if it it little bit slower than 4060... The name does not mean anything. Only the price and the performance.
Current gen prices and performance suck, but the naming is not a problem!
If 7900XT or 4080 would cost $600 I would not mind the name! If 7900XT and 4080 would be double the speed they are, I would not mind the name! Only the price and performance!
The names are actually much better this year! Every xx60 series has same GPU chip, simple and easy! Every xx70 has same chip, xx80 has different chip and xx90 has different chip! What could be better in naming! 4080 12gb would have been bad name! But that we did get rid of. Now every different GPU chip has different product name. That is good! Until Nvidia f** **p it again when they release some new version... Hopefully that does not happen...

So yes, it may be bad times to upgrade your last gen gpu. Good points made Steve. I can't find a smart upgrade to my 2080ti right now.
The 4080 costs the same as the 2080ti did (in the UK) but really doesn't seem enough of a performance leap to justify the cost.
The 4090 has the performance leap that I would expect two generations later. But the price is insulting and the high power draw makes it much more expensive long term.
The 7900XTX very nearly swayed me based on raw performance and price. But again the high power draw on decent partner cards was a turn off (similar draw than the 4090 but for less relative performance). Along with AMDs drivers having a bad rep and their cards missing some Nvidia only features that I do use and would miss. So on deeper consideration the 7900XTX didn't actually seem cheap enough to compensate for those.
Right now I'm holding on/hoping for a 4080ti release to bridge some of those gaps. It's a weird place to be in.

But had the card now for going on five years which equals just under $250 USD a year. If I get another 1-2 years out of it before the 5080-5090 that will be closer to $150. Not bad when u look at it like that, but if the 4090 was $1200 it would have been reasonable.

I upgraded from a 2080 Super (bought late 2019) to a 3080 Ti (used, late 2022), and I'm happy with the performance jump. Sold my older card and a bit of money back which was nice.

Some games are already demanding a whopping 12 GB of VRAM, each potential upgrade path appears either excessively costly or lacking in longevity. As you mentioned, it might be wise to hold out if we can, but we may also find ourselves in the same position just a year later. To see that chart of the manufacturers making more money even though selling a lot less GPUs is not ideal for us gamers. Well, It seems I'm slowly becoming a retro gamer just not by choice.

I got an RTX3060 with 16GB VRAM and I'm more than happy. Arguably "better" GPUs in the same series and in the 4000 generation have less VRAM, not more. Honestly unless you're doing 3D animation or video editing you really shouldn't need anything stronger than a 70-series at the RTX3000 level.

Hell, I bought a 6750xt, and while i couln't be happier with it, absolutely blew my old 1060 out of the water and got it at an awesome price, its not what would have expected to get in 2023.
When I was first saving up in late 2022, after the crypto crash and the prices "returning to normal" I had it in my mind I would probably have to wait enough that I'd get a RX7700xt or 7600xt as RDNA2 would already be replaced.

So I'm on a GTX 1070 and am getting poor performance on games I want to play NOW. It's just not worth suffering through 25-45 fps in Starfield and all the games that will come out in the next year, just for the next generation gpu's to s*ck again so the cycle of waiting another year starts again. I already saved a lot of money by not buying the 2000 and 3000 series, you have to consider that too, so it's not as bad having a bit of a worse deal now. That's why I am buying a 4000 series in the near future. If the 3000 series where cheaper one could consider buying those, but sadly with the pricing as it is now it just does not make sense do buy a 3000 series gpu.
Edit: also, you have to consider the worse efficiency of the amd cards. Nvidia cards may even come out cheaper if I hold one for another 5-6+ years by saving money on electricity. That would be an interesting video.

I upgraded from a GTX 1070 to a RTX 4070 recently ($600 MSRP, included a $100 Steam gift card). For an effective price of $500, the 4070 was a solid upgrade that also gave access to DLSS. The 12GB VRAM buffer will likely restrict it from lasting the 6.5 years the 1070 lasted me, but at $500 I feel like I'm not getting too shafted if I need to upgrade again in 4 years. In comparison, a 4070 Ti at $800 would've been completely out of the question given the VRAM limitation, while $1200 (2.4x cost) for a 4080 is way too much just to get an extra 2 years of life out of a card.
Though the irony of the situation is that the 1070 wasn't even the main bottleneck on the old PC. It was the quad-core Intel i5-6600k that was limiting FPS below 60 in many games. Upgrading the GPU to a 4070 a month before upgrading the rest of the system did almost nothing to improve FPS in the games I play.
Another point is that $400 in 2016 is not $400 in 2023. Using a US CPI calculator, It's $500. So I actually DID pay the same for the 4070 as I did for the 1070.

As longs as your application, e.g. game, is getting 60 fps, no need for upgrade. 30 fps and you feels lags and picture jumps.
I chose the game according to my GPU. So at the moment it is Enlisted and before it was Heroes & Generals before it closed its servers.
The GT 1030 gets around 40 fps on absolute minimum on Enlisted. Bad picture but it is playable. It uses then 1.7 GB of VRAM but offloads some to the system since on Absolute Minimum on the RX 6600 it uses 2.5 GB of VRAM.
With the RX 6600 I get on High around 170 fps and on Ultra 130 fps but it uses between 5 and 7 GB VRAM. So the RX 6600 will do it over the years with Enlisted when I am willing to reduce the settings in order to adjust to the VRAM usage.
For my other system I just ordered the RX 6700 XT and that is about 41% more performance than the RX 6600.
The RX 6600 I got new for 210$ and the RX 6700 XT for 340$ both on amazon.

People keep saying “conditioning”, but it’s not exactly that simple. To a certain extent people conditioned companies to raise prices.
Honestly there’s a enough blame to go around. During the pandemic and subsequent years, People have demonstrated to these companies that gpu demand is less elastic than they thought. If the pandemic demand was just an outlier, and while gpu sales have declined, they would have and should fallen off a cliff, and that’s not what happened. Basically people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for Pc gaming, and a significant portion will be the GPU. There’s something wrong with the demand , not just the supply portion of the graph.

For the longest time the rule I follow is to don't worry about upgrades until your games aren't performing the way you need them to perform. For instance, if you're starting to see more and more 30 fps averages, and you upgrade to something that gets you 60+ fps, you WILL notice that and feel good about that upgrade. But if you're getting 80 fps and your upgrade gets you to 110 fps, even if you have a high refresh rate monitor you might find yourself sitting there wondering if it was worth it.

    • @darthwiizius
      @darthwiizius Год назад +18

Exactly, I had a GTX770 which I ran lowering the settings over the 4 years I used it until it just couldn't keep things smooth while looking dated. Replaced it with a 1060 6GB and used that for 3 years until it started struggling to get 60FPS at 1080P, replaced that with a 2060S 3.25 years ago and that's holding up very well and it might become a 5 year card for me due to all the upscaling tech being employed now. I've yet to get a game it struggles with. The best part is it just means next upgrade will be cheap because RTX5000 will be just out so 3000 cards and AMD alternatives will be out there for peanuts. As it stands you can get 2080tis for as little as half the price of a new 4060ti so if I wanted an upgrade now I'd probably just get one of those and a tube of thermal paste.
