So glad at least a few of you found out the truth of what happened by meeting her and were able to honor her by being at her funeral. It's a shame both her and your Dad are both being shunning by religious beliefs. Jesus would never have done that. 💔

Eli, I love your stories! I am a Yoder whose Grandpa Yoder was from Holmes County (?) Ohio. I used be unhappy with your "obsession " with sa in the Amish community but total agree with you in so much of what you say. My father was a deacon in our church in Lancaster county but he had a burden for the Amish as he realized it is more a cult than a religion. When he retired from his carpenter job, he became a driver/ carpenter crew so he could witness to 'salvation by grace' to them. Bless you for the work you do. I do love your stories and yes, we are probably related a number of generations back!

I'm so glad you were able to get to know her and her side if things. It's sad that she had to go through that. I've been through a lot of bad experiences and don't want to have a relationship with a man bc you just can't tell how things will work out. It's a lot of energy you have to go through to have a relationship and I'm not willing to do that. Lol

No sicker than any other commu ity of people regardless of faith. That's why there are ten commandments, and why so many of the same sins are repeated time and time again. It also why there are the BEe ATTITUDES. 40 odd years God has encouraged to come into the light and tell their stories. He has prepared the hearts of many to accept truth. In Indigenous families, in Catholic schools of every kind and in every variation of "Christian churches" and other faith traditions and cultures, supposed honor killings, female genital mutilation, the throwing of wives onto funeral pyres, the beating together of younger girls for desiring an education. Etc.

I applaud your grandmother and am inspired by her courage to leave. I'm glad that you got to hear her side of the story and Im glad that only the people who truly mattered were st her funeral. Imagine how your grandmother must have felt that her grandson had the idea of finding out more about her and investing the care and effort of looking for her - and listening to her story and believing her. I'm sure you could not have given her a greater gift. And I don't think you could have gotten a greater gift yourself, in better understanding your family, yourself and confirming your decision to continue to live a good life out in the world. In sharing this story, you give all of us a good model for out own lives. Thank You.

When my mom passed away, her wishes were for a closed casket service as she didn't want a bunch of folks standing around talking about how much they loved her when they wouldn't visit or call when she was near death. The reason my family has in the most part disowned me as I made sure her wishes were honored. Take care brother

A few true friends who will listen to you and love you no matter what are more valuable than a thousand "friends" who won't believe you and will disavow you over the slightest disagreement. I am sure it brought your grandmother so much joy and healing to talk to her grandchildren who also left and who listened and believed her and agreed with the truth that grandfather did wrong and grandmother was innocent and justified in reporting him and finally leaving. Its terrible that nobody believed her and she left her entire world behind, including her children. That could be a big part if why your father had such a hard life in the Amish community. He was the baby the 'maid' (concubine!) was brought into the house to take care of! And because of his own fathers reprehensible behavour, your father grew up without a mother! Im very happy you found her and let her know you loved her, even though you didnt meet her until you were an adult.

Thanks for all you do to help others. It seems that “rebellious streak” in you runs a little deeper than just you. Or, perhaps, you just inherited your grandmother’s ability to see through the lies and hypocrisy as well as her inability to accept it.

You're correct sir Amish men are not any better than "men of the world".
I drove Amish taxi, my own van, for 2 years.
I had to stop driving one guy because he started touching me and right in front of his wife. He was stroking my hair and telling me how beautiful I was. And his wife was standing on the porch watching and he knew she was there . I brushed his hand away and said this is how much he owed me.
He called for rides a couple of times after that but I told him I was busy those times and then eventually he stopped calling.

I always thought I should have been born Amish but now am happy I wasn't because I could have been a victim too. Basically the highly regarded men like your grandpa could do whatever they wanted with basically no punishment, all the punishment is put on the woman. From your grandmother’s stories and that phone contact the other day by a bishop’s wife I see clearly now that the ways of the world are not excluded by outer shows of exclusivity in the Amish communities.
I have never been Amish but am a saved and forgiven, Bible believing woman who refused to allow my supposed Christian husband bring pornographic videos into out home with intention of our viewing them together and finding out years later that he rented and sold pornographic VHS tapes illegally at a video store he and his friend owned and operated with initial funding by 2 very well known Houston Oilers.
Also after being raped by my husband after saying ‘no’ to relations once midway in our marriage and seeking counseling by a certified counselor at the largest Baptist church in Houston, I was advised that a woman must submit to her husband and that she could not be raped by her own husband. I learned a lot during and after the 3 year battle to divorce him that gave me solid Biblical grounds for that divorce. My family maintained more contact with him than with me.
I am living proof of the power of forgiveness being very healing for the forgiver each time forgiveness is extended AND that there is life to the fullest after becoming free of such a man in the same manner his grandma did.

There are “Yoders” here in a Mennonite community in “Meno” Oklahoma. A very small town in NW Oklahoma. West of Enid Oklahoma. As a nurse in Enid I came into contact with those with the surname over the years and many from the Mennonite community.

I lived in St. Petersburg (and Tampa Bay, Florida), for 35 years. Some areas (along the water) was very safe, and others were very dangerous. May your Grandmother Rest In Peace!
