This series showed up in my RUclips feed and I am so glad it did! My parents were Old Order Amish in Geauga County, Ohio, until after they were married. They became Christians. My father was immediately shunned, to the point that I and my siblings never met our grandparents. My father’s siblings died and they did not let him know. I know that hurt my dad and he suffered until his dying day. How cruel can people be???? I loved watching what I have seen so far! Thank you so much!
I grew up in New England. Not Amish or Mennonite but in a more mainstream Christian tradition. And yet it still tripped humans up. Many Christian religious traditions suppress people or seek to control or homogenize their participants into appearance, behavioral, and cultural affectation rules that implicitly or definitively derive an exegesis for salvation. Yet the words of Jesus as recorded as well as writings of the Apostle Paul and disciples John snd James paint us much more hopeful gospel story. God has never been approvingly impressed with the traditions of men. Jesus talked a gospel of inward transformation that launches outward expression while mankind continuously devises a gospel of outward appearances that too often leaves the inward man unchanged. Hearing this family’s journey refreshes me as I contemplate my own relationship with God and meditate on what renewing my mind and overcoming the obstacles of a man born into sin within myself in my faith. Your comment is also refreshing primarily because- as with many reflective of a past tradition- you identify the past context and yet explain it without malice. An art I haven’t fully developed.
@@judigamroth7736 In theory, yes. In Practice, no. I think this video actually sums it up nicely. A Christian is a follower of Christ. Nothing else is needed, just simply a relationship with Christ. Christ clearly states that He is the only way. Groups like the Amish seek to add things to Christ. If the one you claim to follow says He is the Only way, and you add things, are you actually following Him and His teachings?
How cruel can people be?…it seems you have no clue…in my opinion id say, the Amish may be strict to the point of appearing rather cruel but perhaps that is because they have a very good clue as to how cruel the outside world can be. I’ve never been or met the Amish but as I age and learn Ive gained a strong and respectful understanding for these types of cults/cultures.
@@mickeyd7283 The Amish aren't cruel in the shunning of their family members. That is simply indoctrination. In fact, the 'shunners' are just as much victims as those they are shunning. They only shun because they in turn are threatened with the same treatment if they don't shun their family members. Therein lies the true cruelty, and problem, with most fringe 'cults/cultures.' They seek to control a population through fear, oppression, shared suffering, and adherence to a religion that the masses are never quite able to study with transparency. I have a respect for their culture as well, for the same reason the mom in this video says she loves the old way, and would be more conservative than most Amish- if only the Amish church didn't suppress and control it's people. This was the issue Martin Luther had with the Roman Catholic Church. You can have a conservative culture that values separation without controlling/suppressing your members through fear and the threat of ostracizing. All of the Amish I have met who have left and become Christians say this very thing. That's just my experience.
You’re mother is so endearing, she has so much joy emanating from her and you can tell her childhood was magical. I grew up in the hood on section 8 housing in urban decay. Moving to the country has changed everything.
This was sooo interesting and heartbreaking at the same time. Heartbreaking for the Amish still stuck. My mouth literally dropped at the part where the bishop said they didn't care what the Bible said! I pray at least some seeds were planted that can't be denied.
This is the best Amish documentary or whatever you want to call it I have ever seen. I have always loved the amish way of living but knew they were missing one VITAL element and that was Redemption in the Lord Jesus Christ. I am so moved because our great God and Father is so faithful. He will bring his children to him out of every man made set of beliefs and religions to a eternal TRUTH in his one and only son Christ Jesus. It doesn't matter what you followed or was a part of from witchcraft to a false religion he that he called in him before the foundation of the world SHALL BE SAVED. He will bring his children to the truth.
Jean this is not anti Amish. It is the truth. So many clueless people are fooled by the “ plain people”. There is far more than meets the eye. And you don’t have to be bitter or angry to realize that truth. I’m so glad this documentary was done with people who are NOT bitter and angry. It makes it so much more believable.
@@jean6872 To the contrary. I see the deep love for the Amish through their story and their faith. Not at any time did I view this as being anti-Amish.
@@letmework6254 It is not necessary to believe someone is bitter in order to be dangerous, harmful, and dishonest. This is the most anti-Amish documentary I have ever seen by fundamentalist Christians who are lapsed Amish.

After I watched a few minutes of the first episode, I became totally hooked on. I've seen a few other documentaries before Amish culture, but this one is amazing. I'm speechless....I loved it..

Interesting how that "ruler" told your father; "that he didn't care what the Bible said. " Then later exhibited; when he couldn't get a vote passed to silence your father (per Amish guidelines; " that he didn't care what the Amish rules were either" - he simply wanted to rule. Thanks for sharing this Amish journey. It's insightful to see how God had to remove obstacles of dependence and fear to get closer to the Graber family. Blessings

@kingdomofgodflag dot info Other people can’t pray for your salvation, you personally have to pray . Prayer goes like this” Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I repent of all my sins. God I want to be in your family, I know that you sent your son Jesus to die on a cross for all my sins and I believe this and come live in me.” in Jesus name, Amen! Once you’ve prayed that prayer and believed it, watch what God will do.🙏🏻🙏🏻
The Amish and Mennonites have very different theology. Mennonites believe in salvation through grace. They are very different in that, so don't confuse the two, just because they look very similar.
@@believeinjesus8862 That's not universal with Mennonites. It might be with your grandmothers circle, but it's not the norm. Most believe that baptism is a public testimony, and many require it for communion.
Your family’s faith touched, inspired and brought me to tears. Thank you for sharing your story. Yet another proof that God is in your family’s decision is that when you listen to them talk you want to be closer, more faithful to Him. (And your mother’s spunk is delightful!)
What a wonderful story! I've always admired the Amish way of life, but didn't realize the inside conflicts they endured.. they decided to "Follow Jesus"! What a powerful message... I did not realize that so many Churches of the Amish did not preach the true story of Jesus saving us from our sins... Isn't that the most important part? Wow! We need more programs like this to open our eyes and hearts to other families struggles... Thank u for this and I'm looking forward to more...
The defining moment when she said we were following God, and it was exciting. Thank you for sharing, this just brings me closer to our lord. Praying for blessings on your families.
“Okay Lord, that was not your voice I just heard!” Haha 😂 Oh my! That was the best line! I want to meet this family. They are inspiring, comical, and right in so many ways.
Joseph, I really like your parents, especially your Mom. She reminds me of my mother so much. I broke away from the Catholic Church when I was 19. Thankfully, I read the Bible and began to realize the difference between the Word of God and the voices of the traditionalist.
My mom and dad left the amish back in the early 60's, i was about 2, i remember how we couldn't visit family. But my mom aways prayed. My mom was killed September 1, 2017, everyone of her brothers and sisters was at the calling hours. It floored me. I still have bad feelings with them. But they are my family.
All glory only to God our Father who loves every one of his children. Only the grace of our Lord Jesus has the power to save and give everlasting life. I love your movies. They are profound and liberating from any form of religion. Christ is alive and saves. God bless you all.
I'm so happy I came across these videos. I don't know any Amish, but it's so interesting to see the insider's point of views and the struggles of people's choices. God guided this family towards Him because Lester had such an amazing faith and tested the spirit. Now the entire family is so blessed. Beautiful story.
What wonderful people. I love how they had the courage to follow the Lord no matter how hard it was and that they were so blessed for doing it! GREAT family!
I grew up with lots of Amish neighbors about an hour from where your mom grew up in Tomah and I knew they were strict. I was recently in Shipshewana for a horse show and was shocked by how liberal they were in comparison. I never realized how different each sect is and how hard it must be to keep up with the church’s demands.
Thank you for the respectful way you are sharing your families story. My Grandfather grew up Amish, and he left the Amish too: and, became an evangelist. I wish now I'd talked with him more about his growing up years and the pain of the struggle when he left. It's the same for everyone isn't it? Often when we study scripture, there comes conflict in organized religion. I was so touched that God cared enough about the cry of the heart he so specifically answered prayers of one seeking him repeatedly.
I'm so glad I watched this. I giggled when Ruth said she had pain in her mouth from speaking English all day. I had the same when I first was immersed in the English language and culture. I grew up in Holland. My parents were Dutch Reformed. My grandparents were missionaries in Indonesia. God did not become real to me until I had experienced Him. And that came through a lot of pain and disciplining, and the way your family experienced God is very recognizable. So it's assuring me in my walk. Thank you.
This is awesome, I have always been fascinated by the Amish & wondered about their faith. They hold so many beautiful values but if Jesus isn’t the centre of our lives we have nothing. Thanks for sharing!
Our heart goes out to you both Lester and Rebecca. We both extend our Christ love to you and your family. As our family in Christ. Obey God rather then Man. Yes the sheep know our Shepards voice. We are evangelical Amish Mennonite. We live in northern Minnesota. Lester you are right. The battle is spiritual. There's no saving grace in our language or any material things. But living plain is a outward sign of being separate and not conformed to this world. Being obedient to Christ. As Rebecca says - the church families work frolics our wonderful and should be done. Not forsaking the assembly. But keeping things as a church away that can tempt us. Yes there's many things these days that can tempt so many. Best to keep it as far as we can. And churches don't work together like they should. Horses. Threshing. Binding. Shocking. Haying. Building. Milking. Sawmills. Submitting ourselves to one another. Is good. But Christ Is the reason. Love to our Brother and Sister and family in faith From your Brother and Sister in Minnesota. Christ be with you.

When his mom talks about loving the sound of the horse and buggy it reminded me of going to the bog to collect turf in Ireland..it was our neighbour who used to go..so as a very small child I would race to be up in time to be on the wall and he would lift me up with what seemed like a huge hand and he would bring a cushion for me..he didn't want me in pain..like I was the first time I went along ..but cushion or not I loved it..going on old country roads with the trees meeting over the top of the road..a simple time..
What a sweet memory..... those of us who have been uprooted from places we thought would be ours forever have a choice - become bitter, or bless what was beautiful and good in our heritage, put the rest under the blood, and move on.
What bravery for Christ! This was truly inspirational. Thank you for telling your family's story. I especially loved your mom's analogy about the shepherd and the sheep. That is just brilliant.

I thought that Amish is a Christian denomination. No?
I love that you tell the stories with love and show both the beauty and the weaknesses of the culture.
I agree
Yes you do this with respect and knowledge.
All cultures have weaknesses and beauty
@@belindacharpentier628 .Aye. Yet some times na always told both. 🌻

This was actually an anti-Amish film. Had you not noticed?

Jean this is not anti Amish. It is the truth. So many clueless people are fooled by the “ plain people”. There is far more than meets the eye. And you don’t have to be bitter or angry to realize that truth. I’m so glad this documentary was done with people who are NOT bitter and angry. It makes it so much more believable.

When I first found and watched this series of documentaries about amish, I thought it was going to be very boring... I told myself what's so interesting?
After I watched a few minutes of the first episode, I became totally hooked on. I've seen a few other documentaries before Amish culture, but this one is amazing. I'm speechless....I loved it..
What a beautiful story! This needs to be a movie.... these people are so precious!
I disagree. If it were made into a movie, Hollywood would just wreck the beauty of it.

Blessings

This should be on a HBO Special. I thought I understood the Amish to a certain point but WOW. This is really serious. Watching on my 42nd birthday.
Agree with you, also best wishes for your 42nd birthday, I Miss Biggie PAC.
In pop culture its the answer to all life's questions, 42 are also the Laws of Ma'at. (Egyptian goddess) Hope this is not too 'non-Christian'.

Other people can’t pray for your salvation, you personally have to pray . Prayer goes like this” Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I
repent of all my sins. God I want to be in your family, I know that you sent your son Jesus to die on a cross for all my sins and I believe this
and come live in me.” in Jesus name, Amen! Once you’ve prayed that prayer and believed it, watch what God will do.🙏🏻🙏🏻
The Amish and Mennonites have very different theology. Mennonites believe in salvation through grace. They are very different in that, so don't confuse the two, just because they look very similar.

Thank you.
Love the mothers sheep fence and Sheppard analogy.... Beautiful!
I love this series! Can't wait to watch the next episode. You are a very talented film maker, Joseph!
This is awesome, I have always been fascinated by the Amish & wondered about their faith. They hold so many beautiful values but if Jesus isn’t the centre of our lives we have nothing. Thanks for sharing!
If Jehovah and Jesus both have to be the center of our universe. Jehovah God is Jesus father.
Let’s pray for revelation and open spiritual eyes for those who really want to follow Jesus! Great respect for this family! Must have been so so difficult! True: if you remove the Shepherd, you need fences, rules and regulations...
Powerful testimony!! Makes me so thankful for the freedom we have in Jesus!! It always boils down to the heart in every area, not the outward appearance or works!!
It's simply amazing how controlling they were- trying to silence you? That is evil and Satan is LOVING this. You guys were missionaries to the Amish elders, really. Blessings to you.
