    I've been searching for one of these and your video is the one that reminded me I'm one of those people that can hear the super high pitched noise that comes out of these tvs. I used to work in Best Buy back in 2000 and 2001 in High School, in the Digital Imaging department selling camcorders and DVCams. I got used to it, but it drove me nuts for a while hearing all the high pitched noise from the tv's. Also I remember freaking my family out because I could tell them when the tv turned on when I was outside the house. They didn't believe me and I knocked on the front door every time they did lol. Good times!

Lately I've been interested in why some models are sharper than others for example I had a 32fv300 that was much sharper than my friend's 24fv300 and I did a video comparing a fs12 to a fv15. I think the newer wegas are sharper (around 2005). Maybe they were made better or maybe they have a fresher tube. Maybe both. I don't know

    Been watching for a while and finally subbed today! Love watching your videos on these consumer sets.
    I just picked up a 32” D series made in late 2004 today. I know 32” is pointless for you, but it’s the sweet spot size for me. I can move it around by myself without breaking my back. Came from the original owner with remote and manual. Almost perfect geometry after some service menu adjustments minus some squiggles right at the top of the grid. Got the inside cleaned out and flyback manually adjusted.
    How do you go about calibrating color on these sets? The basic color adjustments aren’t getting me there. Got a bit of a green hue that looks like poop.
    Looks like r/g/b cut in the service menu is what I have available to adjust but it seems like I could screw it up pretty easily messing with those. Any advice specific to jvc d series sets is appreciated! Peace man

      I've got 2 32 Ds that I roll out to the backyard and game on in the summer. I love those sets.
      I remember my d series looks green in the ntsc color mode. so I switch out of that mode. I have a video on crt color corection you could check out. If that doesn't work then you are going to have to do a white balance adjustment. They make special tools for like 100$ that attach to the glass of your tube to help you make the adjustments. Or you could just use a checkerboard pattern and do it by eye...Should be R, G and B "drive" settings in the service menu as well.

Have most of the consoles going through a gcompsw and using HDretrovision cables for the RGB modded/output consoles. Sometimes you can get by with just the settings in the service menu but that's not what I do. If a tv needs a geometry adjustment I open it, get my magnets and a screwdriver. There are pots on the neckboard that correct for geometry. I adjust those as well as use the service mode adjustments and I use magnets. Sometimes a magnet does the trick. Sometimes it's a menu correction. Sometimes it's a pot adjustment. Sometimes it's all three.

I would use a paint sprayer and talk to some guys at sherwin williams or at a auto body shop about what type of paint to use. My grandparents have a TruTech (Funai) TV that was made in 2009, its a really low end set but the tube is so fresh it looks pretty good despite that. (Using S-Video) It actually can still receive modern OTA TV broadcasts because it has a digital tuner. I checked the schematics and it's internally connected via YPbPr, so I suspect a Component mod is possible. But on a set that blurry S-Video is good enough.

      Good question. I didn't know about HD TVs when I got started and I drove 2 hours to pick one up. It was a mistake.
      Fortunately most wega models are "standard definition" which means the highest resolution they can produce is 480i. This means scanlines and no input lag.
      There are "hd wegas" but they are less common. I would avoid them unless you want one for a very specific purpose. With 240p gaming they have no scanlines and they have terrible input lag. You're better off on a quality lcd monitor.

      Damn that sucks. I've never done a factory reset. I think any of your solutions are going to be time consuming. You might want to look into getting someone to go through all the settings with an oscilloscope. That is how the service manual says to calibrate. It is very time consuming. Good luck.

    I had one of these TV's and the reds are very orange. You can make the reds better but still too orange for my taste.
    The one problem I had with mine was diagonal line interference. It is extremely common on this model and is caused by the tilt control microcontroller. If you wanna see it bring up a solid grey pattern like a nes grey screen when the cartridge isn't being read. Move the tilt from +5 to 0 to -5. It will change how bad it appears.
    Geometry was way worse than a FS100 too. Also its been years since I've adjusted mine but turning VSM off from the menu doesn't work iirc. You need to shut it off completely in the service menu.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  3 года назад

      Sounds like your TV had some issues. I've use the tilt correct many times, on different TVs, but I have never noticed any video noise while doing so. I will keep that in mind next time I make an adjustment.
      How do you turn VSM off in the service menu? What is the setting? Is it just called VSM?

    • @ChuChuFlamingo1
      @ChuChuFlamingo1 3 года назад

      @@riggel8804 If you do a quick google a few other people had the same problem. . Looking at my notes I might have confused a fs120 for a fs100l. Can get kinda confusing since I've had so many of these.A few years ago some random person said to change the tilt settings and it cleared up. Granted the picture is slightly titled, but you can adjust the yoke to fix it by a slight rotation.I believe it is caused by oscillation of the microprocessor that controls the tilt funcntion.
      but yeah tvs that use the BA-6 chassis often have VSM still enabled even when turned off. Some don't. I found it in a post on shmups by Ryeno. FS120 definitely has VSM enabled even when turned off in the menu. imgur.com/a/pMMV2Hx
      So yeah just check your service manual + google.

    I have a KV-36FS100 from 2003 and the menu is even different than both of yours, kinda like a mix of both the 99 and 05. I aquired it around 2009 and it's been my main TV for gaming and DVDs ever since.Tubes still work well, colors are decent, reds is tiniest bit off, greens a tad bit more off, blue is perfect. I've debated going into settings to fix it, but honestly it doesn't bother me unless I start comparing it to an image on my phone or computer.
    It's my only Sony since my higher end 2007 Sony wide screen CRT with HDMI broke when my dumbass drunk brother spilled beer into the back....fuck it still makes me mad, I think that was the very last CRT sony ever produced, and that mf looked criiisppyyy as all hell.

    I've been trying obsessively to get a shader in Retroarch that matches a Trinitron. Best I've managed so far is i.imgur.com/rMUp6ze.png (with glass) or i.imgur.com/HfB3vFJ.png (without glass).
    Problem is, I don't have a Trinitron, or any CRT. I haven't touched a CRT in 10+ years. Only thing I have to compare to are images I find on google, or youtube videos. And it's surprisingly hard to find clear pictures of a Trinitron that show the mask and scanlines well enough. Even hard to find pictures that show the mask and scanlines, but also have 8/16-bit games running through composite. Half the images I find that WOULD have worked, are running the 3D games that don't really help me, or the games have been run through RGB instead.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  2 года назад

      There is not one Trinitron look. There are many different looks. Composite on a consumer grade 1990 trinitron with the Genesis is at the bottom end of sharpness. On the other end you have RGB to a 900 line BVM with the MiSTer.
      Here are a bunch of examples of different CRT looks: S-video looks different than composite and component; a one chip SNES looks different than a SNES mini and the 240p wii shop games look like doo doo; the old curved glass Trinitrons look different than the later generation flatscreen Trinitrons. I have been wanting to do a video on all the different CRT looks. It's a cool subject I don't here a lot about.
      You can get a really good idea of how a CRT looks by watching some of my uploads in 1080p on an lcd screen. My pc engine cutscenes video is good. My Double Dragon playthrough is a good example of a very sharp Trinitron look. For a softer look check out my xbr48 upload. I have composite footage at the end of my upload comparing component to rgb.
