One great shadowmask tube that doesn’t get enough recognition is the classic RCA Colortrak. Its a great example of the “softer” more bloomier type of look that I actually enjoy. Big respect to Sony’s iconic aperture grille, but sometimes the razor sharpness may not be as desirable to the softer look of the Shadowmask. The RCA Colortrak was pretty iconic. Not saying its better than a D-Series Shadowmask tube, but it is definitely worthy of discussion.

Great review of the Wega Trinitron. I don't think I've seen a CRT in years, but I'd like to pick one up. Still have an nes, snes and n64. Interesting article I found yesterday, about how in 2007 LG was still innovating CRT for the African market, model 21FU1R; they're supposedly Very slim in comparison to others that came before it. Unfortunately very unlikely of finding one in the States. I want to say I grew up with a faux wood grain 27in RCA with old school knobs for vol/channel. If you've never carried a humongous crt up three flights of narrow apartment staircase, you don't know...

Just picked one of these up recently, but it is the 32” version. My wife and I drove 4 hours to get it, and 4 hours to get back home. It cost me $100, but it was worth it. Beautiful screen and it came with remote. Looks brand new! Lady lived on the second floor and it was a chore to get it down a flight of stairs because it weighs so much!

I got one from of these off the side of the road in Surrey for free one day. I use it with a modded Wii for emulation in 240p and the picture is really just stunning. There is no better way to see retro games than with this tv right here in my humble opinion.

Hey when you stated that Killer Instinct was a bit dark for you, which I agree it was, is that a situation where you adjust contrast or brightness? I always have a helluva time getting my set just right. I usually calibrate using the old thx calibration tool on many older dvds but that doesn’t always work the best for games. Brightness and contrast always mess me up, not to mention I don’t even think they are called those too names in this menu if I remember right. I’m picking one of these up today for free with the Sony stand that was made for it. I honestly can’t believe it

    • @RetroGameRarities

Great score! Quick tip: there are 4 picture presets. Vivid, Standard, Theater and something else, I forgot. I set the Standard preset to my liking by getting the blacks as dark as I can along with other tweaks and use this for a majority of my consoles. The darker consoles, like the Atari 2600, I set to Vivid and tweak to my liking with more brightness and contrast. This way I can toggle between the presets when needed without having to manually adjust settings for each console or game. Hope this helps!

Hey I got one thats very similar to this, in the same line. its a SONY WEGA KV-29FS110
I got it mainly for PS2 due to the component video, but it seems very flickery and not clear, motion gives it a "combin" effect, apparently it has something to do with the signal being displayed in 480i as opposed to 240p, i tried forcing it to 240p through a softmod app and it did look MUCH sharper, so its clear the issue is with the higher resolution signal being output or maybe some post processing done by the CRT itself, which i cant seem to find in the service menu, do you think you can help me? Ive read it was something about "deflickering"

    • @JesusG-cm2jx

Last week I bought a similar model like yours, with the only difference that is a KV- 29fs120. I'm not sure, but think I have a problem with my TV in regards to the sound of one of the red inputs at the back. I'm refering the red input at the botton where the S-video input starts, forming a vertical line. After plugging my S-Video connector of a ps1 or n64, both consoles look good, don't have problems with the white connector neither, but after having plugged the red one the sound is mostly heard on the left speaker, the right is almost inaudible, you can barely hear anything and the sound seems to hear like it's in mono. If I disconnect the red it starts to be heard on both sides but the sound is still in mono and doesn't sound as it should be. This doesn't happen when I plug the audio cables on the front inputs, the sound quality there is really good and I can hear some melodies that I can't when they are plugged on the back. Does your tv sound like that too? Do you think mine has a defect?

    • @RetroGameRarities

I prefer the older "black" model Sony's with the curved screen over these newer flatscreen crt's. The flatscreen might look appealing with the tv turned off, but they tend to have more geometry issues. You can see this at 8:20, where straight lines are bent everywhere. Still, these days, beggars can't be choosers. If you can find one of these in good condition, snap it up!

I have one of these...it's too bad, unlike some other Trinitron of that era (2005-2006), there were some that were HD, turns out this one isn't, so of course it doesn't have an hdmi output which sucks because back in the mid 2000's, I always had a TV plugged to my computer's graphics card, back then it was S-Video + Composite Sound (or optical in some cases, as my sound card supported it back then, worked awesome with the PS2) to my stereo, but these days you'd be hard pressed to find a graphics adapter with an s-video out, I started doing that with my AMD Duron 700mhz in 2000 so... I want to sell it (can't believe how some will pay for this!), but I do want to get an HD CRT Trinitron, one of those with an HDMI port would be even better. It's too bad it doesn't have an optical port for sound though. Thanks for letting me know I have what is considered pretty golden for a CRT TV....when I bought it....LCD's became pretty cheap 6 months later. Now that I have a plasma to use a second monitor, I know I can sell this one easy and almost get all the money back I paid for it in 2005. Thanks. The HD CRT Trinitron I want would be to game with my snes/gamecube/gameboy advance(or DS) games that work through the gamecube adapter and maybe, if I can get my hands on one, a PSX....the one I had was modded and was already acting weird because of it at times back in '99.
Good vid. What Sony Trinitron HD CRT would you recommend for the same general purposes, it might have a desktop or laptop plugged to it at times, another one obviously, I wouldn't be moving those awkward heavy things a lot on purpose, and some gaming systems, I got a custom made Gamecube Component (RGB) video cable and I only tested it at the home of the person who sold it to me, so I will definitely be trying that too if I can find one that's not sold at an insane price (price for electronics are always, even when we had monetary parity or quasi-parity, more expensive in Canada for reasons I never fully grasped), even if you live 10 minutes from the border and go to Best Buy, you might as well drive into the US and buy there, but you gotta get a passport drivers license and I don't opt for it every year, I surely haven't in the last 2, not important enough to be allowed in.

I looked up the issue on forums and there seem to be some issues between consoles such as the Mega Drive, Neo Geo and some Trinitrons when connected with SCART cables. I confirmed it by plugging in my Master System, for which the TV started up in 4:3.
Pin 8 of the SCART plug determines aspect ratio with its voltage. A forum post advised the OP to simply cut off pin 8. So I took one of my Retrogaming Cables, said a prayer, cut off the pin... And got 4:3 aspect ratio... Only after switching inputs manually with the remote, as that pin was also sending a signal to switch inputs. A Pyrrhic victory. Another solution was to change the voltage of that pin, but I'm not that good at electronics. A funny thing is I never had that problem with the Samsung I'd been using so far. @@RetroGameRarities Light gun games are usually dependent on the 50/60hz refresh rate to register the shots. So on a 100/120hz crt, you will definitely have issues. Doesn't have to be an HD crt for that.

Thanks! No this particular set doesn't support 480p only 480i. There are EDTV Wegas. I believe the higher grade 27fs170s have this, which is 480p.
