      Alexey Voevoda 1990 today’s TVs are easily breakable and can be way too expensive! And it’s pathetic how these companies are always upgrading the picture quality just so people buy these new TVs! 4K has not been around that long and they are already making 8K TVs! The CRT TVs I grew up watching, I still to this very day wish I still had them! I really miss CRT TVs. :(

    You really need to get a Sony FS or KV series with component and run it using using component along with the D-series to truly see what the tubes are capable of, (the D-series look astounding with it's 7-800 line count over YpbpR) no output handicap XD!

    • @martinweizenacker7129
      @martinweizenacker7129 5 лет назад +9

      Well but that doesn't affect the main issue which is geometry imo. S-Video is pretty darn good, there is not too much left to squeeze out from Component. The biggest boost in image quality is from Composite to S-Video.
      Not trying to sound picky, but I probably could not live happily with either set shown, because of those geometry effects. Due to this I prefer curved Trinitrons over the flat ones. I also think 21" is the sweet spot. Larger tubes tend to have more issues with geometry and also convergence. Anyway, great video.

    • @martinweizenacker7129
      @martinweizenacker7129 4 года назад

      @@overkill7990 It's not significantly better. First let's look at it from a technical point of view. In S-Video there is Luminance (Y-Signal) and Chrominance (C-Signal). In fact the Y-Signal is the very same signal you get out of the green Component RCA connector (the green one is called "Y" for a reason). Yes, you could take the Y-Signal of S-Video and use some (weird) adapter to connect it to the green Component RCA input of a display and have a perfect black and white image of great sharpness (just like Component, since it also uses the same Luminance bandwidth).
      Thus it's only, and really only, the Chrominance which gains some improvement going from S-Video to Component. It does so by getting rid of color modulation and using a higher color bandwidth. BUT how big of a difference it really is on the screen depends on how your TV or monitor deals with.
      I can see a difference between S-Video and RGB on my consumer CRT TV but on my Sony PVM it gets really hard to see a difference between S-Video and RGB or Component (although RGB is indeed best looking since it is not compromised by bandwidth limitations at all). Thus, technically S-Video by itself is pretty good and depending on your display there might be an improvement using Component or just very little.

Every flat screen trinitron had poor to mediocre geometry especially in the top left corner where they always seem to sag. I highly reccomend curved glass for any trinitron above 24". The most impressive TV I've seen was a Toshiba 36AF43. It is a flat screen with incredible geometry, bright & vibrant colors, and wonderful sharpness. The other flat screen I saw with perfect geometry was a 27" Panasonic Tau. Has anyone else noticed that Sony flat screens have these issues? Do their tubes age differently or did they come out of the factory like that?

    For the average user, the geometry issues would not likely being picked up nor offer an interference to their enjoyment.
    You failed to discuss the colour rendition during your comparison demonstrations.
    While its down to personal preference, i like the browns/greys (dirt, rocks/pebble surfaces, tree stumps), the shadows of the fence (6:55min mark) and the general details displayed on the JVC. Blues look a bit darker too. I think its due to the nature of shadow marks and how it blends colours, more gracefully in my opinion.
    The crispness, particularly closer to centre on the sony looks sharper and more pleasing to me.
    If there was a commercial grade shadow mask set to get, what is the most desired?

      Hi! Thanks for watching. Here's info from Sony's site Trinitron is Sony's name for its patented CRT technology. 'Wega' is Sony's name for its patented picture/motion processing technology - its a digital processing 'system' which enhances the quality of the signals which enventually 'drive' the actual (trinitron) crt. So they are quite different. If your tv has Wega and Trinitron on it then it has both of these quite separate technologies.

    This D-Series thing would have to really be incredible to top the Trinitron. I just brought a beautiful KV-21X5U, one of the greatest CRTs ever made; it’s beautiful and I love it! Like seriously, I have never seen such a beautiful, clear, and bright picture. It’s honestly astounding. It is a massive pain in the arse to lift however, like Jesus Christ it’s heavier than my brother, and he’s very fat. It’s seriously brilliant, my cheap 14-inch shadow mask I thought looked great, but this Trinitron blows it right out of the water, and then right over the island and back into some more water. It’s a beautiful curved screen model, like all good Trinitrons, and as such the geometry is still nearly perfect even after so many years!
    I picked 21 inches specifically as I thought that would be the maximum size I could fit in my setup, but it wasn’t a good fit even then so I just threw out an extra wardrobe and put it there instead, so I might update to a 28X5U later.
