  • This week we are back and starting an outdoor project series! Starting off, we are building a chill, loungy outdoor sofa! Super simple with materials here, 4x4's, 2x4's, hand full of wood screws and pocket hole screws. And finishing it of with our new fav finish from Total Boat! Even if they are sponsoring this video, all honesty here, it's our favorite now.

    The first half of the ruclips.net/user/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

    My husband and I built this loveseat in about two hours. We did not have the craig jig so we screwed a 2x2 strip to the inside of the back and front to mount our seat slats to. I love it!

    Love your work guys and keen to see the next outdoor projects. The way the pocket screws were used on the slats is no issue at all, pocket screws here are stronger than traditional screws because they are engaging in face grain rather than end grain and they are angled favourably to wedge the board in as downward pressure is applied.
    The main frame screws however... those are only engaging in end grain and will eventually give up no matter how long or big they are, as you already have a dowel covering the screw head you would do better to glue and screw the joint; then after glue has set remove the screw, drill out and replace a with a full length dowel, that will never give up. A couple of pocket screws on the inside vertical face of the 4x4 will also stop any rotation.

    • @Mephistaufeles
      @Mephistaufeles 5 лет назад +3

      Agreed - sort of a ledger board for each end of the slats to sit on, would also help to make sure the slats stay level as you're screwing them in.

  • @Tom.Gregory

    Zip think I would turn the slats over so the screws are on the underside, keep the water out....

    • @Woodbrew
      @Woodbrew  5 лет назад

      It’s under a patio where rain doesn’t get it, but it we ever moved it completely outside, we will flip them over.

    • @Tom.Gregory
      @Tom.Gregory 5 лет назад +1

      @@Woodbrew Trust me, from experience I know if its outside water will collect in the pocket hole screws, even under a cover. please turn them over on the next build.

    • @drewwilliams1445
      @drewwilliams1445 5 лет назад +1

      I’d be less concerned about the water, however the strength. The way the holes are drilled, the majority of the wood “meat” is on the opposite side that was drilled. Aka, when you put too much force on it installed in that orientation, there is a lot higher chance of the slats ripping away from the screws. (I’ve personally seen this happen). So flipping then over I guess would resolve both concerns. No hate, just trying to help. :)

  • @denoro.

  • @johnfithian-franks8276
    @johnfithian-franks8276 5 лет назад +2

    You should have fastened the pocket hole screws from the bottom in case you take the cushions in and it rains, by leaving the up water will puddle in the holes and it doesn't matter how good a finish is it will fail with standing water on it.

    • @thomaswalker6351
      @thomaswalker6351 5 лет назад

      That's exactly what I was going to suggest. Pocket holes on top could be a moister problem.

    It's a shame the backrest isn't having any angle. The backrest angle should preferably be around 15 degrees. Also, slope the seat base down towards the back at about 5 degrees. I don't think this bench will sit comfortably. The bench looks good, but it will be better with the angles in place.
