I can so relate. I am 53 years old and my current visual adventure began 4 years ago. I had worn glasses since I was probably 10 years old. Two years ago, after two years of being legally blind and have everything be very blurry, I decided to cast aside and stop wearing my last pair of prescription glasses. with my current vision, all the glasses did for me was to make everything still blurry but a high definition blurry. While everything is still blurry without the glasses, I just stopped fooling myself with the very minimal improvement they provided. I am going on almost two and a half years coping without them and my white cane and monocular.

7:40 As a non-blind person, I felt this a lot when I finally switched to contact lenses. I had been wearing glasses pretty much since childhood, and I always wore really fashionable glasses, so I was known as the guy with the cool glasses. When I no longer needed to wear them, I felt like my identity had changed. I missed it so much, I ended up buying some non-prescription glasses to wear with my contacts just to feel like myself again LOL. The good part about it is I can buy any glasses I want and wear them immediately right off the shelf. Before, I'd only have 1 or 2 pairs of prescription glasses because it was too expensive to get prescriptions for more. But now, I can have a whole collection of frames I can wear with all my outfits, so it's not completely pointless that I switched to contacts.

I’ve never worn glasses as I have essentially no central vision and only peripheral vision and the frames used to slightly obscure my peripheral vision The only ones I will wear are wrap around shades
My eyesight is starting to deteriorate slightly more rapidly these days and I get the same thing as you they become uncomfortable I guess it’s from straining them.
I’m so glad I’m a lad and don’t have to worry about things like make up and you look fine without glasses

The burning sensation, I felt that during the summer of my sixth grade.
I wore rex specs every day from like second or third grade and pretty much ditched them before I went into middle school, now I feel that familiar burning sensation whenever I try to focus on the screen for more than like 10 minutes.
Nowadays I just listen to the audio of videos and stuff and I’m more reliant on hearing things and actually looking at things, I also feel kind of called out because I also haven’t been to the ophthalmologist in two years because of the pandemic as well.
I think when it comes to RP, there’s a certain point where you just say forget it, and ditch your glasses and it feels so relieving.
Oh and thought I would add this after a few minutes, I was diagnosed with RP when I was six I am currently 21 I’ll be 22 in October, I’ve actually had glasses for like two years in high school but then I kid you not not even six months after getting them my vision got worse to the point where the glasses weren’t even helping anymore and I just said, well time to ditch him again.

You are so cute!! I am at 39 I started wearing glasses at age 8 diagnosed with our P at 13 and gave up my glasses at 28 approximately 11 almost 12 years ago! Sort of the same reason you dad started getting terrible headaches from staring at my work screen and when I had my daughter I was too tired to mess with my glasses or headaches! So I just sort of stopped wearing them! I have not looked back! When you start doing your make up and you will be surprised how easy it is to do as a blind woman because a lot of it is very tactile get ready for all the compliments you will get when people realize you did your make up not someone else! Be warned without glasses and your cane you will be asked if you have tried glasses! I am not joking!! Congratulations on the new freedom from glasses!!😃

It is interesting to hear about your continued glasses use and prescription updates. I am not legally blind, but have RP. Already my optometrist/optician (not my retina specialist) is talking about adaptation and the suggestion that I should start getting used to less corrected vision. That didn’t make sense to me, as I thought I’d want my remaining central vision to be as good as possible. So, interesting to hear your perspective on that!

I have rod cone dystrophy so I'm viewing from your personality mostly. For makeup purposes I use 500 magnifying reader plus a magnifying mirror. Still difficult to do much makeup as colors are off a bit so I don't do much . I use multi purpose makeup like bb or cc cream foundation. Little concealer, mascara and brow pencil. You’re lovely with or without glasses. I only wear glasses when using my ipad. Still have to get right up close to the screen, but it helps with eye fatigue. Just go with sunglasses, lol. A couple benefits I feel about not wearing glasses all the time is not having them slide down when it’s hot, no fogging up or having to wipe rain off them. You have such pretty skin, you shouldn’t have to worry about makeup, other than sunscreen. You could alway try a tinted moisturizer with spf. Easy to apply with multiple benefits. 😊

I am legally blind. I use a power chair. I was born with a mutilated PAX-6 Gene. I do use glasses but I don't use a cane. It can depend on what I am looking at whether my glasses help or not?
I don't think that people should look at you and think you can see just because you have glasses? Blindness is a spectrum and if you change just to prove that your blind or try to just look it then others who do wear glasses won't be benefited. To be honest with you not wearing glasses can make some people think that you are not blind. I believe that people need to be educated and we need to get rid of that basis that people put on us and our disabilities. Disability should not ever be called a dirty word and no matter what if you tell someone that you are blind or legally blind it should never matter. if you need help with something and you say what you can or can't do people need to help you the way you need it and not take your independents away when you can do something. There are way too many stereotypes put on blind people. There are things that I haven't done because when I was younger I had people tell me that I didn't need to use a cane because I could see and so I do understand the feeling that you are afraid to do something that you need to do but everyone else thinks you need something else. If you feel better wearing glasses then you should do it. People in the world need to learn that each person lives with their disability and it is part of their life.

I have spoken to several people about this and I’m pretty sure the starts when we are very young children and our parents take us to the Ophthalmologist. We are given a prescription for glasses. We cannot necessarily verbalize the fact that they don’t help much so it just continues on Until finally we say something and parents don’t force the glasses on our face anymore. Everyone is well intentioned and trying to do everything they can for us but for many glasses just don’t help. That being said, I’m pretty sure that my glasses have saved me from losing an eye on several occasions.

Since you solicited opinions, I think you look better without your glasses. Having said that, I would recommend you ask Ethan, and other close family/friends what they think. I think they'd give you the best feedback on that... but whatever makes you feel the best about yourself is the way to go!
Are you going to wear sunglasses all the time when out and about? I feel like the stereotype I grew up with was that blind folks always wear sunglasses to go with the white cane as part of the look.
I just started using my white cane this year (after getting trained on it), and it's helped a bunch with mobility, but I haven't run into the issue of people thinking I could see much with my glasses on (I can, to an extent as the patches of my visual field I can see with are 20/25 with glasses, it's just the large blind patches that inhibit me).

Thank you! I think Ethan likes me better with glasses, but that also could be because he’s just used to them since I’ve worn glasses the whole time we’ve known each other. Hi Chris! What you are thinking of is called photo phobia and it does affect some visually impaired people but not all. It is when the guy is very sensitized to light. People who are not visually impaired can also suffer from photophobia. But typically you see it in people with ocular albinism or other diseases that make their eyes more sensitive to light. I only have approximately 5% of my visual field but I get told constantly by people they had no idea I was blind if I don’t have my cane with me.😆

Have you ever looked into natural vision improvement? Look up Endmyopia...the guy's name is Jake Steiner. You seem like someone who would be open to it. It works 100%. You don't know me but take my word for it lol :)

It doesn’t work. Only a nutrient rich diet in lutein etc and a healthy exercise regime can possibly have any chance of reversing eyesight
