I always love when someone says “I am legally blind without my glasses“. Um, no you’re not. If glasses correct your vision, you are not legally blind, you just have bad eyesight.
I wear glasses and I’m legally blind too and get questions and stares all the time about it, especially when I have my blind cane in my hands. So I truly relate With this post. I can “see” color and blurry big objects just not detail nor can I read unless I hold it up next to my eyes. I wear my glasses to make the blurry crispier and brighten the colors. People just don’t understand is what I’m learning as I just became legally blind last year at 43.
Hi Kimberly! I’m so glad you can relate. It sounds like we may have pretty similar vision. It is true that most people don’t understand and that can be so frustrating. It’s hard to blame them though for not understanding because our vision is something that is so difficult to explain. I’m sure I wouldn’t understand it if I didn’t live it
The question no one ever seems to get tired of, if you’re legally blind why do you were glasses. You’re really help shed light on something that we have visually impaired people get there so often. And you made a really important point for you mentioned how the chart being written in bold black lettering with good contrast made a big difference. So many doctors I charts aren’t written with a good contrast and the rooms don’t have good lighting.
A court of clockwork hallows thank you! And yes that makes a huge difference. A few years ago I went to the eye doctor and the nurse put in my chart that I only had light perception, which was very far from the truth, because the room was so dim I couldn’t see the chart at all
Don’t even get me started on nurses and I charts. I went to the eye doctor the other day and my mom was like freaking out because I didn’t get that far down and I tried and I usually do and I was like mom that’s because the color contrast with terrible and they had like the light behind the words and whether it was black which made it really unclear. Here I thought they couldn’t get any worse than having a look in the mirror and have to read through reflection
I wear glasses with my type of blindness. It does make stuff a little clearer for my left eye. I can’t make out certain numbers or letters at the eye doctor with the eye chart. I also have nystagmus, which makes my eyes shake. Surprisingly, no one has questioned my vision with glasses.
I’m also legally blind and wear glasses. I relate to this video so much! Most of the time, I don’t find the clarity that worth it and don’t wear my glasses around my house. I don’t notice a huge difference, everything with my glasses is still blurry and a struggle. It’s really frustrating to me that people assume since I’m wearing glasses that my vision must be corrected and that I can see well with them. Great video as always!
Thank you! I’m glad to know I’m not the only legally blind person who wears glasses. I can definitely relate to you. People thinking I can see because I wear glasses is probably the most frustrating thing for me about wearing glasses
Hi Cayla! I can relate to what you’re saying. I can no longer use corrective lenses, but I when I first started using a cane, I was still wearing mine. Until 4 years ago, I’ve worn glasses since I was about 9. After legal blindness, people assumed I still had good vision despite a white cane. Even now, with little left, which is limited yet somewhat usable (on a good day). People assume I can see more than I really can’t. They don’t realize it took years to adapt to vision that’s very unstable and constantly degrading. Nice to see a new upload from you! Hope your summer is going well! 😀❤️
Hey! It’s always great to hear from you. I hope you are having a good summer too. I’m glad you could relate to this video. I can definitely relate to people thinking I can see more than I can because I have adapted well. People have no idea how hard we have to work to do things and just assume we must be able to see it if we are able to do it. And it baffles me how many people think I can see even when I’m using my cane. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has experienced this
Hi Kayla, I think you did an excellent job of showing viewers how complex low vision really is. The bigger the font, did not mean that you could read it better and the lighting is so important. I remember when my visual acuity was changing from 20/200 to 20/ 400 and I was having difficulty with mini daily tasks since my vision changed in every setting. I was at my retina specialist and he said to me just take your time and look at the top line and study it he explained that there was no pressure, just try to read each letter as best I could. I remember the background being bright white and the letters being dark black and I sat and sat and finally said “you know if these letters were on the side of the bus and the bus were moving and it was a cloudy day and there were people around, Well I would not be able to read any of those letters“. I told him that if he documented that I could see the top row, 20/200 it really would not be an accurate reflection of what I could truly say because given those same letters in environment, not a sterile ophthalmologic all exam room, I would just not be able to see them. He laughed and said that he would just charge me as 20/400 visual acuity and we would call it a day. So my journey into vision change began that day. Your video is a great example of just how difficult it is to describe to anyone that hasn’t experienced it. Thanks for showing this. Love Beverly
Hi Beverly! It’s always good to hear from you. You are so right that our vision fluctuates so much depending on the circumstances or what we are looking at that it is really difficult to put a number to it. I think those numbers can be misleading too because if someone thinks I can see at 20 feet what they can see at 200 feet they may think I can recognize someone’s face if it’s close enough, which is not the case. It’s so nice to connect with other people who get it ❤️
Hi cayla! The more I get into RUclips videos the more fellow RP’ers I find although this can take its toll on me it’s great to know I am not alone your gorgeous! I am 31 and barely starting to consider using a cane knowing there’s colored ones has helped inspire me a little more , hugs!
Hi! Thank you so much for the compliment! And I agree, I think having people to relate to can be really helpful. I’m glad you are considering using a cane. My hot pink one really made me feel more confident using it
Being VI I stopped wearing my glasses years ago because people constantly assumed I could see everything with them on, so I totally relate. It seems like most sighted people only understand totally blind or fully sighted, so the gray area of VI is hard to explain to a sighted person.
Hi Cayla, this is a great video, it was fun to learn more about you. Thank you for this valuable content! I always enjoy your videos :-) thank you once again! Matt
Cayla with a C thank you Cayla! It is always great to hear from you on my channel as well! I thought this was a very interesting video talking about your glasses as I can imagine you probably get questioned all the time. I do not wear glasses and never have, simply because there is no need for me since my vision is beyond the point of the glasses whatever help to any capacity. But I can’t even imagine how many people would probably question you about your glasses. Very interesting video, thank you!
Excellent video Cayla. I am legally blind and I do use my eyeglasses. A lot of people believe that with my glasses on I can see normally. Almost everyday I do need to to explain to them what I can see and what I cannot.
Hi Kayla. I may have the same kind of thing with like you do. Without the glasses I can see some things and with the glasses it tends to help a little bit especially when I am looking at computer or tablets or anything else that is bold and that kind of stuff. So I know exactly how you feel. When the doctor told me that wearing glasses wasn't really going to help me any better if I kept them on I was the happiest man on Earth. I hated wearing glasses growing up. It's so good to see you again Kayla and you look beautiful as ever. Your husband is the luckiest man alive! Take care and I'll be looking forward to your nether video from you. Hugs and love
Aw you are too sweet. Thank you! I’m glad you can relate. That sounds very similar to my experience. I also hated wearing glasses growing up, but I don’t mind them as much now
F, that's definitely an F. Says Cayla about the R 😉 That was a pretty cool way to quantify your vision for us actually. Even though you didn't know if you were right or not in the moment, it was pretty clear by your editing and when you held the page up in front of the camera. This was an insightful video.
Lol I was laughing so hard when I was editing this video and my husband was pointing out all the ones that I got wrong. That part was by far the funniest. I’m glad you liked the video
I remember you at the Vocational School! I had no idea you were blind until you had a cane at night. I was real curious and confused until you told me that you were legally blind. It was around late 2014 early 2015. Ya you were really good at helping me with problems, even having to do it two times in a row. I appreciate that! I also remember thoses times when I would act silly to get an reaction from you. Glad to see you are doing alright. Are you still working at the place?
Hi! What a coincidence that you found me on here. I hope you are doing well. I’m glad I was able to help you when I worked there, that was my favorite part of the job. I don’t work there anymore.
@@CaylawithaC Ya you were a big help Cayla!! I scrolled around and some how some way found you on here!! So I watched some of your videos and said I have talked to this girl in real life before!! They're really nice people there!! I am doing good I do have myself a Job!!
@@CaylawithaC I was there from dec 2014-july 2105. I think you would recongize me from my name on youtube. I was the one that got the anchovie pizza. I think I gave that one away!! lol!! I am glad you are doing good Cayla!! Congrats on your RUclips, Marriage, etc
Thank you!! I thought that might be you. Of course I could never forget you and your anchovy pizzas lol. I’m glad you are doing well and have a job. That’s great to hear!
Hi Cayla, do u use a ruby or CCTV? I have RP and like to invert the font on iPhone and when I used my old Samsung phone. I hate those eye charts at the doctors offices but being in college I understand THAT CONFUSION LOOK but I understand that but don’t let it bother me and if they wanna know they’ll ask other than that my instructors are the ones that need to know in order to help me as far as homework etc.
I used to use a CC-TV but not so much anymore since it is such a strain on my eyes. I don’t really mind when people ask me about my glasses. I would much rather them ask than just assume that I can see well since I wear them
Another wonderful video. I can relate to everything you said. I wear my glasses to protect the one good eye that remains. Should I run into a door jam or an open cabinet and injure that I, that would be another life transition. Also, when I wear my eyeglasses the magnified font is ever so slightly crisper. Not as fuzzy. And, every little bit helps.
Thank you! I’m glad you can relate. That’s a good point that glasses also help to protect your eyes. There have been so many times I have hit my glasses on something like an open cabinet and thought it was a good thing I was wearing glasses or that could’ve been a bad injury
Vision is a fickle thing. One minuet we can see well enough to read something, the next, the light changes and we can not read what we just read a minuet ago. I my self get ask how I can do certain things (walk, read, ride an ATV, etc) yet I can not do other things (type real fast, read, use certain appliances without difficulty, use certain tools, etc). You might see me walking around wal mart with no cane (I have one but family peer pressure is why I do not yet use it daily), but if I have to look at 2 cans of cola on the shelf to determine if they are Root Beer or Dr. Pepper then I hae to get real close to the labels. So when I go shopping I usually wear a shirt from The Blind Life Amazon store that sums up my vision in a neat little saying and helps to break the awkwardness of dealing with people, "I can see, but I can't #ItsComplicated"
You are so right, vision can be very fickle. It is so hard to explain it to people because often I don’t even really understand it myself how I can see something one moment and not the next. That’s great that you wear the blind life shirts!
Vision loss is such a complex box that it is hardly same for everyone. It is just that people generally assume that blind = NLP. I mean, if glasses were not invented, I would fit the criteria. It would be a bit of a bitch to find things and recognize faces (but i hardly do anyway, so :/) but I would not run into walls. To drive would be very unsafe. On the other hand, I sometimes get ocular migraines, which is a weird thingy where suddenly I get a black spot where my central vision should be, like when one stares into a light, but that cannot be blinked away, and that spot then can shimmer or is accompanied by a shimmering zigzagging lines. Definitely annoying, since I cannot really see over it and reading anything is impossible no matter the font. Driving it also very unsafe, but doable as long as I keep waze on to tell me where to go. It lasts around half an hour, but if it refused to go away, that state would also count as legal blindness and it it nothing like my without glasses vision. Nothing like.
I’m legally blind as well and I have glasses I always get questions though about why I’m never wearing my glasses like out in public or to social events and it’s because I have adjusted to my eyesight around me and how to navigate with it for so long now it’s not that big of an issue plus I’m never really having to adventure out independently without friends or family to help guide me The only time I really use my glasses is for close-up work that I have to really focus on like school work or even going on the computer, I can’t see the computer screen from a couple feet away from me so if I didn’t have my glasses I wouldn’t be able to efficiently get my work done but I don’t have to rely on them to navigate through my day-to-day life. Can anyone relate to this?! 💓😁💓
That totally makes sense. I can relate to not wearing my glasses sometimes. Especially now since they get fogged up when I wear a mask, I stopped wearing them in public
Matt In Full Vision I’d like to know what medical school deemed that doctor qualified to practice medicine. I guess practice is the key word. Sounds like an Olympic Gold Medal level dumbass. Wow!
I am not able to see people or what they are doing. Every blind person is different, but for me it’s like the dark is too dark and the light is too bright.
@@CaylawithaC Thank you for answering. Just wondering: I hope these questions don't sound weird. If the light is too bright will wearing sunglasses help it not be too bright? How do you fix your microwave or stove so that you can know what buttons to push on the microwave? If you cook on the stove how can you tell if the burner is on high medium or low without getting burned? I need to set my house up for when I am alone and can no longer see. thank you
@@davidhuynh5600 no these questions aren’t weird at all. Yes sunglasses do help a lot with the light. I put bump dots on my microwave and stove/oven so that it makes the buttons tactile. Here is the link to a video I made about how I do things around the kitchen. I hope it’s helpful ruclips.net/video/4J0CX_lOGr4/видео.html
I wear glasses but they're only frames no lenses. And they're for my or cam device. So what I'm at a store I'm sure people are staring but I can't tell nor do I care. Hahaha if they are staring it's probably cuz I look more like a sideboard than I do an individual that's got glasses and a white cane. Lol But great video he did an awesome job. And I knew exactly how you felt when you kept turning to find more light in the room. It wouldn't matter if you were in the brightest room ever you would still be turning to find out where the most light was coming from. I am exactly the same way when I have to try to look at something. That's when you know your vision is legit bad.
Hey Vincent! It’s always great to hear from you. Thank you! I’m glad you liked the video and that you could relate. Yes, I’m always moving things around to try to get it in the best light. And I also assume that a lot of people stare at me, but I can’t see them and I don’t care either, so it makes it a lot easier to deal with
Thanks for your videos. They are a blessing and inspiration. I am also legally blind I have a condition called star guards it’s a real struggle but I’m thankful for the site that I do have L
Hey Cayla, I'm interested to know if it would have helped you to bring the paper closer? When I read, my face has to be right up against the page. Great video! xxx
Great video I support your videos and channel you look great with or without glasses I just want to let you know you inspire me and thank you you are like a sister sorry if I said something wrong
Greetings I am from San Juan Puerto Rico. I have retinitis pigmentosa and I wear glasses because my eyes move a lot from side to side, your eyes move from side to side or they jump I do not know English but used my translator on my iPhone.
Just wanted to say that I get that all the time to my vision is 1/200 with my glasses that's corrected and people don't even understand that you can still be blind with correction and using a white cane or guide dog and I totally get what you're saying with the whole people think you can see a whole lot more than what you can so I really like this video a lot because you show how much it still means that you're legally blind.😊
can't recall if you mention it or not, but it's worth noting that fo the legally blind sort of 'test' that chart is also placed at a set distance away from you...which obviously makes the whole thing near impossible to read (at least for myself!) despite being able to do a few lines if I held it close to my face with good lighting.
That’s a good point. I should’ve mentioned in the video for my totally blind viewers that I am holding the paper right up to my face. Hopefully since I said I was testing what font I can read and didn’t say I was measuring distance, hopefully it was clear what I was doing
Thank you sooooo much for this video!! Im not alone! This is soooooo me!! I'm older now and I'm afraid of walking without no assistants. So now I am considering a white cane. I dont see wholes infront of me and there i go.. Thank you! Thank you!! 😊
I use a 50" plasma screen tv as a computer monitor and ramp the font up till the letters are about an inch tall from maybe 2ft away. I take my glasses off a lot more now. They're a -15 diopter, but they only really do me any good when something is within 6" to 2ft away. Closer or further than that and they don't really help much anymore. They just help in some situations. But yeah, the glasses and the cane confuse ppl, cuz they're like "hey why don't you have sunglasses on?" Then if you try to be self-sufficient at anything they assume you've just been faking at being blind the whole time. It's a vicious cycle.
How much does a prescription have to be to be legally blind I’m at -4.25 right now and it gets worse like yearly so just wanted to ask ? My vision is pretty bad without my glasses
Being considered legally blind isn’t based on what your prescription is. Essentially being legally blind is having 20/200 visual acuity even with glasses or contacts. Here is a video I made where I explain in more detail what it means to be legally blind ruclips.net/video/7ygtoRiRb1g/видео.html
You are really good at describing your vision or lack thereof. I only had to wear glasses for 7 years, when I was in my late forties my cornea deteriorated but now has deteriorated to the point glasses do not help. Just curious though why you hold the paper so far from your face? Is it possible for you to see it better if you get it closer to your face? That is how I have managed most of my life is by bringing things closer to my face.
That’s really interesting. I can definitely relate to feeling like they are a part of you. Also glasses have become a lot more trendy in recent years so that makes me like them even more
Its kind of annoying when you're at your opthal's office and they're like "oh you're seeing 20/60 today" and you're like... I guessed the G, got the L and O, pretty sure I missed a few... and you're saying I'm SEEING at that level? No no no. Eventually making out letters by doing the "what normal number does this normal number's shape most look like" in my own head game isn't really the same as "seeing", but ok...w/e.
My glasses never ended up working but I have to wear sunglasses because I'm insanely photosensitive. I honestly have no idea why the doctors kept insisting. I don't even get a little extra bit, lol.
It’s really interesting how glasses help some visually impaired people but not all. I used to never wear sunglasses because the light didn’t bother me one bit. Now my eyes have gotten extremely sensitive to light and I always have to wear them when I’m outside
@@CaylawithaC Fuck it. They make us look cool. Our spouses mouths will water. Nothing like feeling desirable, right? Plus, y'know, no sun-migraines. That's a net positive!
As someone who wears glasses even though I’m VI I can totally relate. Seems like you can see better without glasses than I can without glasses. Oh and D’s and O’s look so much alike on those eye charts and I swear they look like they’re altering from one to another. What sorcery is this? 😂
I didn’t know that you wore glasses. Lol yeah a lot of the letters look alike. For me capital O, D, and Q are interchangeable. They all kind of just look like a circle
Hi Cayla, With or without your glasses, if you were being examined, you'd be further away from the eye chart which makes a difference. I know all too well about what and how you can see one day and not the next and whether or not to trust what you think you might be seeing.
Joshua Brande you are right, this would go much different if I was actually being examined. This was just a little experiment about what I can read on paper. If distance was thrown into the mix I probably wouldn’t be able to read anything at all
Hello dear friend it’s Jon I ware glass as well I have the same problem only thing now is that I have cataracs right now and don’t know if I can have them removed but one awesome thing I have you guys to talk to and we are all in this together. 😅
*_I feel VERY sorry for you! You've needed glasses since you were 4?? THAT'S SO SAD! I'M MIDDLE-AGED & STILL HAVE PERFECT EYESIGHT & NO GLASSES! Sometimes I forget how good my life is_*
Never "feel sorry". I certainly dont mean any disrespect to you or your comment. You are sighted and dont understand how resilient vi, blind or disabled people are. I very recently found this website and am delighted that she is able to explain how I feel about different things. Those of us that are vi or blind are just living life the best we can with what we got. We are just like our sighted friends, families and yes- co workers. When someone says I feel sorry for you, I'm like why? I get up every day day to live it better than yesterday. I unintentionally inspire people. I would never hope to have someone feel sad for me.
Dear madam lots of people are emotionaly blind and blind with thinking too intelligent. Your videos are very informative and very nice. You say a lot legally blind but please please don't take into ur heat about the legal blind term
@@CaylawithaC i have glaucoma and 2015 went completely blind in my left eye and have had surgery and take drops in my right eye but still slowly getting worse. Glasses do help a little but not sure for how much longer. I haven't worked or drove since 2015.
This is exactly the misconception she is pointing out. So many people assume that you just need stronger glasses or get Lasik or something like that, however there is a whole spectrum of vision impairments that are not correctable with glasses or surgery. Trust us, those of us who have been legally blind for any length of time have usually gone to numerous eye specialists, And if the answer was as simple as “get stronger glasses” believe us, we would!!

Wow!! That is a neat idea with reading letters off a chart like that. It looks simple to make, I think I'll try it sometime.
Go for it! I thought it was a pretty interesting experiment
You should do a video where a friend wears your glasses and has to read the chart!
That’s a fun idea. It would probably give them a headache though lol
That 10 second headache is real. Letting my friends try my glasses was always my response to blind questions in school lol
I wear glasses and I can tell you right now that I need them for obvious reasons
Cool video, I used to wear glasses because my idiot of an eye doctor thought glasses would help me even though I'm completely blind
Matt In Full Vision I’d like to know what medical school deemed that doctor qualified to practice medicine. I guess practice is the key word. Sounds like an Olympic Gold Medal level dumbass. Wow!
Hey Matt! Thank you! Wow that is crazy. It amazes me sometimes how dumb doctors can be
@@CaylawithaC I know it's mad how some of them even got a job in medical practice
Are you able to see people and what they are doing? Is everything dark if your blind or just too bright?
I am legally blind too, and I also wear glasses and my experience is similar to yours, thank you for sharing.
Hi Alice! I’m glad you can relate. I was starting to think that I was the only legally blind person who wore glasses
What do you mean by legally blind
I wear glasses but they're only frames no lenses. And they're for my or cam device. So what I'm at a store I'm sure people are staring but I can't tell nor do I care. Hahaha
if they are staring it's probably cuz I look more like a sideboard than I do an individual that's got glasses and a white cane. Lol
But great video he did an awesome job.
I am also legally blind I have a condition called star guards it’s a real struggle but I’m thankful for the site that I do have
L
Thank you! That’s so nice to hear
Great video! It reminds me of my son's eye exams.
Thank you! Yes, those eye exams can get pretty lengthy when you are struggling so hard to make out the letters
Hey Cayla, I'm interested to know if it would have helped you to bring the paper closer? When I read, my face has to be right up against the page. Great video! xxx
That’s the closest I can get with it being comfortable to me. If I bring it closer it gets blurrier and hurts my eyes like I can’t focus
Great video I support your videos and channel you look great with or without glasses I just want to let you know you inspire me and thank you you are like a sister sorry if I said something wrong
Aw thank you! You are so sweet. You didn’t say anything wrong. I always appreciate your comments ❤️
Greetings I am from San Juan Puerto Rico.
I have retinitis pigmentosa and I wear glasses because my eyes move a lot from side to side, your eyes move from side to side or they jump I do not know English but used my translator on my iPhone.
Hi Anthony! I have RP too. I have heard of people’s eyes moving side to side like that but mine do not
Cayla with a C ok
Just wanted to say that I get that all the time to my vision is 1/200 with my glasses that's corrected and people don't even understand that you can still be blind with correction and using a white cane or guide dog and I totally get what you're saying with the whole people think you can see a whole lot more than what you can so I really like this video a lot because you show how much it still means that you're legally blind.😊
Thank you! I’m so glad you can relate. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one
can't recall if you mention it or not, but it's worth noting that fo the legally blind sort of 'test' that chart is also placed at a set distance away from you...which obviously makes the whole thing near impossible to read (at least for myself!) despite being able to do a few lines if I held it close to my face with good lighting.
Thank you! Thank you!! 😊
You are very welcome. I’m glad you could relate
But yeah, the glasses and the cane confuse ppl, cuz they're like "hey why don't you have sunglasses on?"
Then if you try to be self-sufficient at anything they assume you've just been faking at being blind the whole time. It's a vicious cycle.
I so relate to this video right now you talk about is it's not like ouch but I've gone experiences like you
Hey Jordan! I’m glad you can relate
I feel the struggle. I used to wear glasses but just for protection of my cornea.
I’m glad you can relate
That is how I have managed most of my life is by bringing things closer to my face.
mrsteresa1999 I do hold things pretty close to my face, but if I bring it closer it doesn’t get clearer and hurts my eyes.
@@CaylawithaC okay that makes sense now I understand
My prescription is -9 in one eye and -10 in the other, I have bad vision 😔 altho the glasses do help 👌
My 12 year old is -17.50 in both eyes 😢. I keep fearing he will eventually be legally blind.
Love this video! I totally relate.
Thank you! So glad you can relate
It is so hard to describe your vision to anybody that isn't you
I couldn’t agree more!
Thank you for this video I was quite curious about this
You’re definitely not the only one. I get that question a lot. Glad you liked the video
I am totally blind and I still wear my glasses, like they are a part of me even though I can’t see anymore
I got my first pair of glasses at 6 months old I'm legally blind to
India which type of operating system that you are using
Which screen reader softwares that you are you see
My glasses never ended up working but I have to wear sunglasses because I'm insanely photosensitive.
I expecting a reply regarding this issues
Hi. Thank you for your video. What’s prescription in your glasses? Bye. God bless you
Hi! I’m actually not sure what the prescription is.
You have positive prescription, like me. I wear 6,5 and 5,25.
If distance was thrown into the mix I probably wouldn’t be able to read anything at all
Hello dear friend it’s Jon
I ware glass as well I have the same problem only thing now is that I have cataracs right now and don’t know if I can have them removed but one awesome thing I have you guys to talk to and we are all in this together.

Disability is a social construct, dealing with ignorant public can be difficult!
I totally agree!
Mam I am also full blind I wish that which country you are leaving right now
*_I feel VERY sorry for you!

Hi
May be u need more prescription for the better vision
The prescription is as strong as it can be. When you have a retinal disease glasses can only help so much
This is exactly the misconception she is pointing out.
And I don't like ouch because people think vision born blind vision can be correct way reality cat so sensually it's a lie
Are you will be second nature to you
